  We’ve got a performance problem in production. QA and DEV environments are 2 instances on the same physical server: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32 GB RAM, 1 Quad 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon X5270 (4 cores x64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives Prod: Windows 2003 Datacenter SP2, 64 GB RAM, 4 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Intel Family 80000002, Model 6 Itanium (8 cores IA64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives, Veritas Cluster I am seeing excessive Signal Wait Percentages ( 250%) and Page Reads /s (50) and Page Writes /s (25) are both high occasionally. I did test this query on both QA and PROD and it has the same execution plan and even the same stats: SELECT top 40000000 * INTO dbo.tmp_tbl FROM dbo.tbl GO Scan count 1, logical reads 429564, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. As you can see it’s just logical reads, however: QA: 0:48 Prod: 2:18 So It seems like a processor related issue, however I’m not sure where to go next, any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

• Windows 8 Pro Remote Desktop issue

  I have a weird issue here. I'm running Windows 8 Pro. The client computer is also running Windows 8 Pro. Remote Desktop works when I'm in the same network. I tried connecting using my external IP Address and my DynDNS account, neither works. I disabled Windows Firewall and setup DMZ for my computer on the router, still can't get remote desktop to work. I verified www.canyouseeme.org, port 3389 is open, which is obvious since I'm running DMZ! My ISP, Bell Canada (modem/router: Sagemcom F@st 2864), blocks port 80 and 25, but I don't need those for RDP, do I? The funny thing is RDP rejects the connection instantaneously for my IP or DynDNS while it takes a while for another address. Thank you, Michael

• RAID Array performance on an HP Proliant ML350 G5 Smart Array E200i

  We have a client who is complaining about performance of an application which utilizes an MS SQL database. They do not believe the performance issues are the fault of the application itself. The Smart Array E200i RAID controller has 128MB cache and we have the cache set to 75% read/25% write. The disk array set to enable write caching. Recently we ran a disk performance test using SQLIO based on this guide. We used a 10 GB file for the test found that the average sequential read rate was ~60 MB/sec (megabytes/sec) and the average random read rate was ~30 MB/sec. Are these numbers on par for what the server should be performing? Better than on par? Horrible? Amazing?

  I am getting the errors shown below when I try to burn a CD/DVD on my DVD writer. I am seeing this error for every CD/DVD I try to burn. I am not able to write any CDs or DVDs using ImgBurn. • Puppet won't execute command

  Puppet 0.25.4 on ubuntu point blank refuses to execute the following command: exec {"initiate replica set": command => "echo 'rs.initiate()' | mongo", path => ["/usr/bin","/usr/sbin","/bin"], user => "root", require => Class["mongodb"] } I can execute the command as root myself, so I'm guessing perhaps it's an issue with the shell. Unfortunately upgrading puppet isn't an option (and causes other issues anyway). I've tried specifying explicit paths to the binaries instead of relying on the path parameter, and also changing the command to: "bash -c \"echo 'rs.initiate()' | mongo\"" Still doesn't work. Any ideas? I get an error message saying something like "failed to change from notrun to 0"

• Development Server Blocked Only from Home

  Recently I've been having an issue with my CentOS 6 test server running Apache and Webmin running on port 10000 where when I try accessing any part of the server - SSH/FTP and even my domains (I have two - both keep getting timeout errors) when I try accessing from any computer on my home network. However when I access via tethering or via my office networks everything loads fine. While the firewall is the first issue at mind, my router never was set to block any special ports, and even after adding port 10000 as a specific exception I'm having no luck. Also, I doubt this is an IP blacklisting issue because I have websites on other servers using CloudFlare for security and I haven't gotten any warnings. Any assistance is greatly apprecaiated. UPDATE: Just some extra details about the issue: My ISP to my knowledge only blocks off ports 25 and 80 for residential users to prevent them from running web servers - however this issue has only come up a day or two ago, before that I was using the server successfully for months. Also the server is not physically located in any of my workspaces - it's a VPS housed in a datacenter

• Load balancing SMTP in a way that doesn't hide the source IP address

  I need to load balance SMTP to handle some applications that don't know how to use MX records. I set up a Netscaler using the TCP option on port 25 and now Exchange sees the source IP as that of the DMZ of the Netscaler for every connection, not the client. Obviously this prevents RBLs, Whitelists, and all other IP-based reputation to fail. It also make it impossible to whitelist a trusted IP for anonymous relay. Question How should I configure the NetScaler (or Windows Load Balancing) so that I can allow load balancing yet still maintain visibility of the source IP?

• Dropbox won't connect on Ubuntu 10.10 (Waiting For Connection)

  I run Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-25) on an x86 machine and try to install Dropbox by downloading the latest .deb file from the website. Now, first it will install dropbox-nautilus (requiring me to restart Nautilus before that) and then ask me to start Dropbox itself. The Dropbox client opens and indefinitely waits for a connection as there is a connection error. Of course, I don't use a proxy server and I'm writing this post from this very machine, so there's no problem with the internet connection. I'm not using a firewall (at least not that I know of, the Ubuntu installation is relatively untouched so far). Does anybody have some pointers?

• Clients not recognizing secondary LDAP groups?

  I'm having an issue where users who are members of secondary groups in LDAP are not being recognized as members of that group by the client. In this case, user jdoe is not being recognized as a member of the projects group. On the client, getent group shows: projects:*:20001:1001,1002,1003,1004,1005,1006 and getent passwd shows: jdoe:x:1003:10003:John Doe:/home/jdoe:/bin/bash But if I log in to the client as jdoe, and run id, I get: uid=1003(jdoe) gid=10003(jdoe) groups=24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),44(video),46(plugdev),10003(jdoe) It recognizes jdoe's primary group, and the secondary groups that are appended by the client to all LDAP users, but the LDAP secondary groups are not in the list. We can see that jdoe's id is in the projects group, so why is the projects group not showing when jdoe runs the id command? The group objects are basic posixGroup entries, with a memberUid attribute for each of its members. We are using OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.04 server and clients.

  I can't activate Windows 7, I get an error saying DNS name does not exist. Is something configured incorrectly somewhere? PS: I need the answer within 13 days ;) UPDATE: I had upgraded from my company's Windows Vista build, and when I connect to the company VPN and activate I get a different error: The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.   Using rsync(ubuntu) and a DeltaCopy server on W2K3 to back up some of the data on the file server before I migrate from W2K3 to Ubuntu server. After it completed I ran a dry run just in case something had been missed or changed ...   I am having trouble setting up JUnit with App Engine in Eclipse. I have JUnit set up correctly, that is, I can run tests that don't involve the datastore or other services. However, when I try to use the datastore in my tests they fail. The code I am trying right now is from the App Engine site (see below): http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/tools/localunittesting.html#Running_Tests So far I have added the external JAR (using Eclipse) appengine-testing.jar. But when I run the tests I get the exception below. So, I am clearly not understanding the instructions to enable the services from the web page mentioned above. • Server Memory with Magento

  I have a cloud server with the following specifications: 2vCPUs 4G RAM 160GB Disk Space Network 400Mb/s System Image: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I am only running Magento CE 1.7.0.2 on this server. Nothing else. Usually, the server has a loading time of 4-5 seconds. Recently, this has dropped to over 30 seconds and sometimes the server just goes away and I get HTTP error reports to my email stating that HTTP requests took more than 20000ms. • Remote site AD design (2003)

  A remote site has about 25 of our 50-ish employees. They have their own AD domain presently (2003) but I want to look at getting them onto the same global domain for ease of access/administration. The remote site has a VPN link but line speeds are very poor. I am already aware of tools like ADMT and have done a few migrations in the past (NT/2003 domains), but this is the first time I have the luxury of designing how this domain is organised. So I'm looking for tips on good AD design; would a remote site be better served as a sub-domain? would this reduce traffic? I am only currently looking at 2003 since only existing machine will be used.

I found formula's (both array as non-array) that handle this for a fixed range, but I want to have the results in another column per week number.   I am trying to understand why my production environment might be disallowing HTTP RANGE requests. I have a pool of W2K8x64/IIS7 servers behind a pair of Netscaler 9000s. • Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. The closest I've got is something like the following: http://www.get-digital-help.com/2009/04/14/create-a-unique-alphabetically-sorted-list-extracted-from-a-column/ However, this requires applying that formula to every cell in the primary column of the overview sheet. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA. • How have you saved green by going green?

  For the purpose of this question, I am interested in server/datacenter related hardware. Have you had any measureable amount of ROI by swapping existing hardware to more "green" or energy efficient hardware? For example, VMWare says you can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% by using virtualization. I have also heard of a cooling solution from HP which is suppose to reduce a small amount of engery usage (<25% I think). Google has also done something by integrating a UPS into their power supplies to reduce energy consumption. Any real world experiences would be great, but if you have any details on initial cost, savings and pay off time about what changes were make that would fantastic. I am not only interested in virtualization, I am interested in anything.
