• Safety of Amazon Community AMIs

  Hi, I am working for a scientific project and would like to use the Amazon EC2 to host the same. Now, I was going through the existing AMIs to create my own, but I found one AMI in the community list of AMIs - which fits perfectly. My question is the following - are the community AMIs safe? Is it possible for a malicious user to create an AMI in such a way that say the usernames/passwords etc can be sent to a remote server or something? Does Amazon do any sort of checking to make sure it cannot happen? I couldnt find the answers to these in Amazon site. I am pretty sure that you guys would have felt the same issues - could you please provide your answers? Regards K

The steps I follow is import the data to a complex network with Networkx partition the network into some modules which are known as communities simulate the SIS model and draw plots with and without communities. Something confused me between step 2 and step 3. After partitioning, I get some communities which contains nodes number. The community numbers and nodes numbers are the only input to step 3, and how I simulate SIS with and without communities?

• Learning... anything really

  I'm particularly interested in Windows PowerShell, but here's a somewhat more general complaint: When asking for help on learning something new, be it a small subject on PHP or understanding a class in Java, what usually happens is that people direct me towards the documentation pages. What I'm looking for is somewhat of a course. A deep explanation of why something works the way it does. I know my basic programming, like Java and C#. I've never seen C or C++, though I have seen a bit of assembler. I know what the Stack and Heap are, how boxing and unboxing works, why you have to deep-copy an array instead of copying the pointer and some other things. Windows PowerShell on the other hand, I know nothing about. And I notice that when reading the small document or some code, I usually forget what it does or why it works. What I am looking for is preferably, a nice tutorial that explains the beginnings, the concepts, and goes to more difficult things at a steady pace. The only thing documentation can do is explain what a function does. That's no good to me since I don't know what I want to do yet. I could read about a thousand functions, and forget about most of them, because I don't need to implement them right after it. Randomly wandering through the documentation doesn't do me any good. So conclude, what is a good tutorial on Windows Powershell? One which explains in clear language what is happening, one which builds on previous things learned. I don't think googling this is a good idea. Doing a Google search on this would turn up numerous tutorials. And experience tells me that you have to look long and hard to find the gem you're looking for. That's why I'm asking here. Because this is the place where you can find more experienced people. Many of the PowerShell guys among you will know the good ones already, and by asking you, I avoid wasting time that could be spent learning. So to summarize: I will not google this!

• How do I get the current Cmdlet from another object?

  What's the best way to get the current PowerShell Cmdlet from another object? If I create a helper object that is not a Cmdlet but will be called by Cmdlets, the helper methods may want to call WriteVerbose, WriteDebug etc. What's the best way to get access to that? Is there a static PowerShell method that will return the current Cmdlet or do I need to have the Cmdlet pass itself to the helper?

• Get-ADGroupMember returns nothing while being completed successfully

  I've tried to list all of the members of one of the groups in AD, but nothing is returned, although the command is completed successfully. It neither works with group DN specified, instead of sAMAccountName. Get-ADGroupMember "sAMAccountName" -Recursive | select name See output below: The following message appears if one views Members from dsa.msc --------------------------- Active Directory Domain Services --------------------------- Some of the object names cannot be shown in their user-friendly form. This can happen if the object is from an external domain and that domain is not available to translate the object's name. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Can this be a reason for powershell not returning results? Any thoughts? UPD: this doesn't seem to be permissions issue, since dsquery does return group members.

  I'm trying to load Exchange Management Shell and it gives me a big 'ol red error that says: Import-Module : There were errors in loading the format data file: Microsoft.PowerShell, , %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml : File skipped because of the following validation exception: File %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml cannot be loaded. The file %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\ExchangeRemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details... The %APPDATA% is stored on an external server on my network (that I can ping to without problems). I am missing a ton of PS cmdlets too, which I'm presuming are stored in '*.format.ps1xml' Can someone tell me where to start?

• JoinDomainOrWorkgroup Method FJoinOptions help

  Anyone have experience of using the JoinDomainOrWorkgroup Method of the Win32_ComputerSystem Class? I want to write a powershell script to join a machine to a domain. There may be an existing computer account for the machine, and if so I want to delete it and rejoin to the domain. I've already scripted the "search and destroy" part that will delete the computer account if it exists, but just noticed the FJoinOptions switches on Technet. Trouble is - they're a bit ambiguous. Does 4 (0x4) Deletes an account when a domain exists. mean it will delete the computer account if it already exists on the domain? Also, can you specify the computername you want to join the machine under with this method, or should you do a rename and then join the domain. • Getting Android drivers to work on Windows 8 Community Preview

  I made a post about this on android.stackexchange.com, and they referred me to here. I have an HTC Flyer and a Motorola Droid X, and for both, I've been unable to connect to USB debugging to do Android development. With the Motorola Droid X, the MotoHelper installer won't run, saying that I'm running an Unknown OS Version. With the HTC Flyer, HTC's Sync software installs successfully, but again the device doesn't connect. I realize that this is beta software, but is there anything that I can do to get this working? I've been relying on switching back to my laptop running Linux to test out my Android builds on the device. Of course, I'm not in any production environment - just playing around with the new OS, but not being able to write code on it makes less fun.

• How to troubleshoot a remote wmi query/access failure?

  Hi I'm using Powershell to query a remote computer in a domain for a wmi object, eg: "gwmi -computer test -class win32_bios". I get this error message: Value does not fall within the expected range Executing the query local under the same user works fine. It seems to happen on both windows 2003 and also 2008 systems. The user that runs the shell has admin rights on the local and remote server. I checked wmi and dcom permissions as far as I know how to do this, they seem to be the same on a server where it works, and another where it does not. I think it is not a network issue, all ports are open that are needed, and it also happens within the same subnet. When sniffing the traffic we see the following errors: RPC: c/o Alter Cont Resp: Call=0x2 Assoc Grp=0x4E4E Xmit=0x16D0 Recv=0x16D0 Warning: GssAPIMechanism is not found, either caused by not reassembled, conversation off or filtering. And an errormessage from Kerberos: Kerberos: KRB_ERROR - KDC_ERR_BADOPTION (13) The option code in the packet is 0x40830000 Any idea what I should look into?

  I am trying make an uninstall app which removes an application X on a regular basis. The starting point to access applications installed in a Windows machine is through retrieving them from a WMI Class called Win32_Product. But when I run the basic command like this, I get the below error. I have searched technet and SO, but either their workarounds did not work for me or were too technical in detail which did not make sense to me. Please help. • Is Cygwin the best unix environment for Windows?

  Which unix like environment do you prefer on Windows? I have found Cygwin to be very comfortable for a windows platform (usually XP). I am wondering if there is a better alternative (not because I want to move away from Cygwin). What are the features of Cygwin that you like OR, What are features you find in alternatives that you miss in Cygwin? I am often miss binary compatibility of applications built on Cygwin. These cannot be run directly on another Windows platform. But, usually fetching a copy of cygwin1.dll suffices. A collection of other tools many of which work directly on the Windows subsystem rather than emulating unix, like Cygwin does.   I have directories with hundreds of RAR files. Currently I use Powershell 2.0 with a script that utilizes WinRAR's RAR utility to decompress the files. The issue is that a small number of the files end up being encrypted, which pauses the script and requires interaction. Is there any way to do one of the following: Identify the encrypted files before trying to decompress Entirely ignore the encrypted files Automate an incorrect (or correct) password that will attempt to open the file, but just skip it if incorrect. NOTE: Some of the compressed files encrypt just file contents, whereas others encrypt file name and file contents.   I'm posting this as a BIG CAVEAT to everyone. I know it's not a standard Q&A, but I think this is someone every Windows admin should know. There is a very real risk of falling into Big Troubles. Microsoft has recently released Windows Management Framework 3.0 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 systems, which includes some nice things native to Windows Server 2012 (like PowerShell 3.0) and lots of improvements to WMI, WinRM and other management technologies. Windows Update is advertising it as an optional update. Should I install it on my servers?

• Windows 2008 R2 Scheduled Task Not Running With Admin Privileges even if granted?

  I have a scheduled task that is running as USER. I have checked the box "Run with highest privileges" in the scheduled task properties. The task is a powershell script that, among other things, reboots the system. The script executes and runs normally, but as a scheduled task, it fails to reboot the system. Here is the kicker: When I manually run the script as USER using the exact same command line as what's in the scheduled task, the script still runs but this time it actually reboots the system. I have UAC disabled and USER is a member of the local Admins group. The local Admins group has the right to shut down the system. Nothing in the event logs offers any clues. Why would the same script running under the same credentials work interactively but not as a scheduled task? UPDATE: This is too weird. When the task ran on schedule, everything worked normally.

I think (but I'm not sure because I never looked at output before) the PS script that I have worked before but after some problems with IIS7 installation it stopped working.   I created a new windows 7 SP1 base image. Everything is all fine and dandy with that. So i am now installing standard applications I would like Quicktime to manage .mov files. The only problem is WMP (Windows Media Player) won't give up the association to .mov files. It's driving me crazy... i've been reading threads on how to fix file associations. I would like to do it via registry, powershell or cmdline. • Adding many IP addresses to Windows Firewall using CLI fails partially

  I have a PowerShell script which adds IP addresses to Windows Firewall using the "netsh advfirewall" command. (As described in this question: How to append netsh firewall rules, not just replace). The problem is that when adding a lot of IP addresses (currently over 700) the string of IP addresses seems to be 'cut off' at some point. Only an X amount of the total amount of IP addresses are actually added to the firewall, the rest... not. The script is very simple, and looks something like this: $ip = "123.123.123.123,124.124.124.124,125.125.125.125 and so on" netsh advfirewall firewall set rule name="*" new remoteip="$ip" I tried to echo the string to see if it's cut off; echo $ip But the complete string is correctly echo'ed. Is there some kind of string length limit for the netsh command? Or anything else that could be causing this issue?
