• Personal Virtual Desktop Collection: User Assignment

  Using Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services, I have a 'Personal Virtual Desktop Collection' with automatic user assignment enabled. According to Microsoft "Personal virtual desktops are permanently assigned to a user account and the user logs on to the same virtual desktop each time." Is there a way either through the Server Manager UI or PowerShell to determine which user has been assigned to which VM? The only way I have found so far is to query the 'Remote Desktop Users' group on each VM in the collection, however that requires each VM to be powered on. There must be a better way.

• Which tool / technology: System management for databases and dependent services

  I'm looking for advice on how to enable our team to take down and re-start our company systems for maintainance purposes. The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option. We are considering developing a solution driven by PowerShell scripts but I hope for some more suggestions.

• Has anyone managed to install Office Webapps on SharePoint 2010, on Windows 7 ?

  I've installed SharePoint 2010 as a development environment on my Windows 7 x64 environment (notes here) and would like to install Office Web Apps onto it also. However, when trying to install (following this link), I get an error saying that Web roles aren't installed. The error message in the log file is: Start C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML Error: Failed to start process for file: C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe arguments: -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML ErrorCode: 2(0x2). Which is effectively saying that ServerManagerCmd is not found. It isn't on my machine as it is deprecated and replaced by Powershell functions, but is on Server 2008 R2. I've tried copying that over and it just fails to run. Is there a way to get Office WebApps installed on Win7 ? Is there a way to get a working version of ServerManagerCmd.exe on a Windows 7 x64 environment ? Many thanks

  Background: Server OS is Windows Server 2012. GUI is installed as we come upto speed with powershell. Setup is staging, not production (yet). We have our (internal, domain limited) Root CA installed. I would like to take the Root CA offline to secure storage but before that I'd like to setup an intermediate CA which can take over actual live, online (int-RA-net) functionality Can someone guide me covering: creating the intermediate CA certificate request installing the intermediate CA certificate on domain controller (certification authority role already installed with Root CA online right now) use the intermediate CA to generate a certificate (any use certificate, just for demonstration purposes) Obviously this certification chain would be invalid on computers outside our domain (self trusted root - our root certificate is NOT from common 3rd parties). This last point is NOT a problem.

• AFP AD ACL permissions issues with external drive

  Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 connected to an AD domain system serving AFP shares to Mac OS X 10.5.8. If I create a share on the the internal RAID of the server with an ACL that allows RW to all ("Domain Users"), then it works, but a share created identically on the external RAID appliance (Drobo v2) doesn't. When the share from the Drobo is mounted, it shows no sign that it has any ACLs associated with it: neither in the Finder (Get Info), nor when checked via the terminal with "ls -lae". The Drobo does show that the ACLs exist when I ssh into the server and check it there, but when the clients mount that share, they just... ...disappear. Any thoughts?

• Gather Outlook/Exchange connection Status responses from script

  I'm trying to figure out a way in-which I can remotely gather Outlook = Exchange Connection stats from systems. I know I can have the users Right-click their Outlook icon in the system notification area, and then choose "Connection Status", but I'd really like to be able to poll this information without having to as the user to do anything. I saw this previous post, and I believe what he did is similar to what I'm trying to do we created a VB application that would pull user PTO information from a backend system and send out status emails to each of the users on a monthly basis but I'm trying to do it to gather the connection information from all my sites for certain parts of the day. Ideally I would like to do this via some sort of VBScript code since that is what I'm most familiar with, but I can work with Powershell too. My environment is all Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003 clients.

• organizing images by resolution with batch files

  Doing some digging I'm trying to figure out a command line solution for organizing very large archives of images based on their resolution into folders, 1920x1080, 1600x1200, 1600x900, etc. I've come across a few post on Superuser mentioning something called ImageMagick, is that the best method to the madness I'm trying to accomplish? I've never used any command line functions/applets/tools other then those that come from Microsoft. I'm rather new to command line usage but ive been enjoying the hell out of it using Powershell, xcopy and robocopy. I am slowly trying to push myself further into the Linux world with Ubuntu running on one of my physical machines as well as a virtual machine so that's an option as well.

• Mozilla Thunderbird new emails indication colour

  I've recently upgraded Mozilla Thunderbird to v3 on Winodws XP. In v2 I think when new (Pop 3) emails were downloaded, there were a little star icon next to my local folders where it's filtered to as to indicate new emails. In v3, it seems they've changed it to use different colour to highlight the folder instead. Whereas folders with existing unread emails are highlighted in bold black, folders with new unread emails are highlighted in this light grey greenish colour that's really hard to see. Can anyone please tell me how to modify the colour? I'm guessing it's either some lines in a userChrome.css file, or modifying a field in the config editor. Thanks. :)

  I've just compiled and installed PHP-FPM 5.5.5 following this tutorial. I have ignored the apache setup section, because I'm running nginx. Everything seems to be fine: php -v PHP 5.5.5 (cli) (built: Oct 18 2013 21:56:02) Copyright (c) 1997-2013 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.5.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2013 Zend Technologies Problem is, I need to link it to my nginx conf via a socket, but /var/run/php5-fpm.sock file doesn't exist. How do I create it? The file /etc/php5/fpm/pool.d/www.conf does include the line listen = /var/run/php5-fpm.sock It is possible (though I'm not sure) that it's a leftover of an older php version 5.5.3 which was installed and removed via apt-get. I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander)

  from what i can gather the mailbox bit of the web interface works fine.. when any of the users go to options (top right) and try to use some of the features such as the Organise Mail Delivery Reports to find messages etc... it comes up with a message ..   I have a dual-band 802.11n router operating in both frequency bands with the same SSID. My Windows 7 laptop has a dual-band wireless adapter. Is there a way to find out which frequency band is the one currently used by the client? Also, is there a way to set the preffered band? Thanks. EDIT1: The router is Linksys E4200 (V2) and I essentially want to keep the 2.4GHz band in the mixed-mode so that the legacy 802.11g devices can connect while allocating the 5.0GHz band for 802.11n devices. • Unable to logoff, disconnect, or reset terminal server user in production environment

  I'm looking for some ideas on how to disconnect, logoff, or reset a user's session in a 2008 Terminal Server (unable to login as the user either as it is completely locked-up). This is a production environment, so rebooting the server or doing something system-wide is out of the question for now. Any Powershell tricks to help us with this? We've tried to disconnect, log the user off and reset the session as well as killing the session's processes too, directly from the same terminal server (from the task manager, Terminal Services Manager and the Resource Monitor) with no results. Help! UPDATE: We ended up rebooting the server as no other attempts that we could think of worked. I'll leave this question open hoping someone might have more information about this one issue, and it's potential fixes

• Scheduled task based on Microsoft patch release cycle

  I have a simple powershell script which unapproves all patches based on computer group name in WSUS which works great. All of our servers patch on a specific Day/Week/Time starting on Week0-Wednesday which would be the Wednesday after Microsoft Patch Tuesday (2nd Tuesday of every month) all the way to Week3-Sunday. This obviously causes problems as sometimes not all patches get applied in one reboot cycle, and then will install patches the following week during their group policy scheduled patching day/time which is what I'm trying to prevent. My question is I'm trying to schedule my script to run based on this schedule and I am finding it next to impossible using Windows Task Scheduler. For instance if I wanted something to always run on the 4th Monday after Microsoft Patch Tuesday, I cant always use the task scheduler option "4th Monday of the Month" Has anyone run into a similar situation, or know of any task scheduling tools which give you more flexibility than Windows Task Scheduler?

  I want a way to download a file via HTTP given its URL (similar to how wget works). I've seen the answers to this question, but I have two changes to the requirements: I'd like it to run on Windows 7 or later (though if it works on Windows XP, that's a bonus). I need to be able to do this on a stock machine with nothing but the script, which should be text that could be easily entered on a keyboard or copy/pasted. The shorter, the better. So, essentially, I'd like a .cmd (batch) script, VBScript, or Powershell script that can accomplish the download. It could use COM or invoke IE, but it needs to run without any input, and should behave well when invoked without a display (such as through a telnet session).

  I have some backup tapes which existed on an AUSPEX file server. The backups were written to tape with the SunOs version of the CPIO command. Now that I need to restore them, (of course there are no more auspex servers in existance), the backups won't restore because the headers are not standard. I have dumped the tape images to disk. PAX, CPIO, and TAR cannot read the images. I've tried all of the CPIO format options. The errors I get are "name too long", "byte swapped in header", or just junk output. I can open up the images and read the contents of the files, but cannot restore the images. I have found that SunOs had a special header in CPIO V2.5 images. I have found the source for cpio, now I need definition of the SunOs header inside CPIO?

  I know this looks like weird and useless, but let me explain... I'm running Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) to make some tests on Windows 8 Preview. One of it's assessment is the "Battery Run Down Test", which tests battery consumption with some procesor load. I'm trying to "automate" in some way this test, I mean, I wish to execute it without any human intervention (such as manually disconecting the eletric power source to leave my notebook running only from batteries to run this assessment). So, there is some ACPI API, Windows API or even an easy bat shell/VBScript/Powershell command to do this? Does someone already made something like? PS: I'm asking this because I couldn't found any answer, but maybe someone here would have any tip...

• Unable to ping remote server Nagios

  We've recently set up Nagios on one of our Amazon EC2 instances to act as a monitoring server to our other instances. nrpe was installed on our staging server stager and appears to be working fine: monitoring_server~: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H xx.xx.xx.xx -p 5666 NRPE v2.12 The issue is - when viewing the remote server stager within the Nagios admin screen - it appears to be 'DOWN'. • Joining Windows 7 Professional to a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 domain fails.

  I have a windows 7 professional (spanish) laptop trying to join a Windows Server 2003 (english) domain. It detect correctly the SRV record, finding the proper domain controller, but then the join fails with the error message (snippet, because the error is in spanish) An Active Directory Domain Controller for This Domain Could Not be Contacted The DNS is correctly set, and client can ping by name and IP the server, the server can ping the client by IP. I've tested with the FW down to no avail. A host of other XP Pro clients are connected to the domain. I've restarted Net Logon and checked that Windows Time is up. Also the times are in sync between the server and the client. I'll put below diagnostics output. • Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions... • Updating PHP on a Plesk managed Server

  I just updated PHP and MySQl on my VPS with the current Versions from Atomic Repo. Everything worked out fine so far. From console I get the new PHP 5.3: [root@server phpMyAdmin]# php -v PHP 5.3.16 (cli) (built: Aug 20 2012 11:18:05) Copyright (c) 1997-2012 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies with the ionCube PHP Loader v4.0.5, Copyright (c) 2002-2011, by ionCube Ltd. But through Apache I still get the old version (5.1.6). The server is running some old version of crappy Plesk Panel. That gives me the option to choose between Apache Modul, fCGI and CGI-BIN. Any hints, how to update apache, so it will use the new PHP Version? EDIT: I just needed to restart httpd (/etc/init.d/httpd restart)

  I have a UCMA service that sends a URL to load in a communicator extensibility tab as mentioned here: http://blogs.claritycon.com/blogs/michael_greenlee/archive/2009/02/19/context-windows-in-communicator-using-ucma-v2-0.aspx http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ucclientsdk/thread/4406e412-01f1-466f-a593-3b83652dcdb1 This works fine with Office Communicator 2007 R2 for most trusted links, and on Windows XP and 2003 it works fine with a page with an ActiveX control. However, the ActiveX content is not displayed in Vista or Window 7. I've tried relaxing the security settings to no avail. Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.

• Prevent Windows 7 from unpluging External HDD

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!
