• MDaemon vs Exchange (2007-2010). Which one should we choose ?

  We are at the verge of a mail server decision. We do currently use 2 mail servers : MDaemon 10 and Exchange 2003. We are planning to use a company and customer wide one point solution. Our main candidates are MDaemon 11 and Exchange 2007 or 2010. We would like to learn other users experiences on those solutions. The server-side experiences, the user-side experiences, feature set, TCO, support options etc. And if there were other solutions (like MDaemon 11 + Exchange or anything else) what would you suggest ?

• Exchange Server 2007 Forwarding Circles

  Hello, I asked a question quite a while ago about two members of an organization who wanted to receive all of each other's emails, and yet maintain seperate mailboxes. (so all emails to mike@company get sent to mike and dave and all emails to dave@company get sent to mike and dave). At the time, I actually only needed to implement one side of this (only mikes emails got sent to both receipients) and (with the help of ServerFault) I set up forwarding on dave's inbox so that all of his emails would also be sent to mike. I'm now in a situation where I have to implement the other side of this relation (such that mike's emails will also forward to dave). I still remember how to set up the forwarding rule, but I'm worried that I might be creating a circular forwarding rule such that mike@compnay forwards to dave@company which forwards to mike@company and so on. Can anyone clear up my confusion (just want to make sure I don't make a stupid mistake). Thanks a ton

• SysAdmin Career Question: Internal or Client Based

  ServerFault Community, It seems there are two positions SysAdmins find themselves in, either you are working for a non-IT services based single client (your employer) and providing in-house IT support or you work for a company who provides out sourced IT services to multiple clients. Right now I work for a company who does the latter, and I often consider how nice it would be doing the in-house side of things, to just have one network I am focused on and instead of feeling like I have a dozen bosses between clients and internal management, I would just have one set of management and people to appease. There is also the technical aspect of every client wanting something different, and having to manage numerous different technology platforms, or trying to force clients into using the technologies we prefer, neither situation is enjoyable. Is this just "the grass is greener on the other side" syndrome, or is there some legitimacy to the the stress of client based IT work compared to being an in-house IT guy? Thanks!

• Resetting "HDD Warning???" with Zalman ZM-VE400 external case

  Whenever I turn on (or plug in) the Zalman ZM-VE400 I have, it shows HDD Warning???. Sometimes briefly, sometimes until the Menu button is pressed. The case contains a SSD drive and as far as I understand the warning relates to the S.M.A.R.T. status of which this drive doesn't support all parts. How can I reset the warning so I don't receive it every time when turning on the drive? Firmware reports: V400_01_040_N Here's what I have tried so far: Unplug and plug back in Open the case and remove the SSD, then put it back in Press the button on the back side (cover removed) while plugged in Press the button on the back side (cover removed) while not plugged in USB Connect = Refresh = Enter USB Connect = Safe Removal = Enter Advanced = Umount VHDD = Enter

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system. • Installing ZendServer on IIS6

  I need to run ASP and PHP applications side by side, so I installed ZendServer Community Edition on our existing Server 2003 platform. I specified it to use the existing IIS instance so I don't have to deal with multiple ports (we use ZoneEdit to manage our DNS and they don't seem to allow anything other than port 80 without forwarding). The install went smooth but when I try to configure and manage the install by going to http://localhost/ZendServer (or even just localhost) I get a Bad Request (Invalid Hostname) error. I haven't done anything except install the server, and this is my first time working with ZendServer. How do I fix this so I can get things set up?

• Determining the health of a Cisco switch port?

  I've been chasing a packet-loss and network stability issue for a handful of end-users on an internal network for the past few days... These issues surfaced recently, however, the location was struck by lightning six weeks ago. I was seeing 5-10% packet loss between a stack of four Cisco 2960's and several PC's and phones on the other side of a 77-meter run. The PC's were run inline with the phones over a trunked link. We were seeing dropped calls and interruptions in client-server applications and Microsoft Exchange connectivity. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps remotely, having a local technician do the following during breaks in user and production activity: change cables between the wall jack and device. change patch cables between the patch panel and switch port(s). try different switch ports within the 2960 stack. change end-user devices with known-good equipment (new phones, different PC's). clear switch port interface counters and monitor incrementing errors closely. (Pastebin output of sh int) Pored over the device logs and Observium RRD graphs. No link up/down issues from the switch side. change power strips on the end-user side. test cable runs from the Cisco 2960 using test cable-diagnostics tdr int Gi4/0/9 (clean)* test cable runs with a Tripp-Lite cable tester. (clean) run diagnostics on the switch stack members. (clean) In the end, it took three changes of switch ports to find a stable solution. The only logical conclusion is that a few Cisco 2960 switch ports are bad or flaky... Not dead, but not consistent in behavior either. I'm not used to seeing individual ports die in this manner. What else can I test or check to determine if these devices are bad? Is it common for single ports to have problems, rather than a contiguous bank of ports? BTW - show cable-diagnostics tdr int Gi4/0/14 is very cool...   i am using powweb as hosting provider and cloudflare as free cdn. Its been few weeks since my website is down and it says "website down, no cache version available". And to add more to it, I cannot access powweb or any website hosted from powweb from my ISP connection. So i am facing trouble solving my cloudflare issue. I just wanted to know if the problem I am facing is from cloudflare side or powweb side. Some time i can access my website from my end but my friend in another country says its down for days. • Is it possible to have a computer run two OS's in memory at the same time?

  I'm sick of needing to reboot my computer every time I wish to use another OS, or run a virtual machine that skimps on power. With the onset of large amounts of memory for computers nowadays I began to think that there must be some way to run two OS's in memory with a way to switch between the two. In my mind, it doesn't seem too difficult; a compatibility layer boots up after bios, which in turn boots to OS1. While in OS1, software is run that triggers a save to ram boots back to the compatability layer, and then boots to OS2. This way, the OS's can be used side by side and boot times are cut drastically short since both OSs are already in ram. Both OS's have their own designated and protected memory so there is no problem there... I mean, it seems fine, but no one has done it, so there must be some reason as to why. I would love some insight into this please.

• Office communicator voice chat

  My company recently mandated a switch from Skype to Office Communicator for IM / voice chat. While Skype was never the be all and end all of VOIP, it was at least usable. With Communicator, if one person is talking, everyone else is basically silent (or as good as) so a normal conversation is impossible. No one can interrupt anyone else, if two people start talking at once it's a crap shoot who gets to be heard and often the person who is inaudible doesn't know it. There do not seem to be any client side settings to fix this. Is there anything that can be done server side or is it just rubbish?

• UPS: Do i require a special extension cord for power in?

  I have a couple of Tripplite UPS systems. The power in cables are bright orange and about 2 meters in length. I want to put the system on the other side of the room but for some reason the UPS keep "going off" over there. So I guess the wall power sockets on that side of the room are a little dodgy. So i figured Id just go online and get some replacement UPS power IN (from wall to UPS) cables of an appropriate length. But i cant find any anywhere. (auction sites, tripplite store, cable websites). So now I'm wondering if that's just because you can use a standard extension cord of an appropriate wattage? I thought the UPS power IN cables were "special". Is that not so?

• Hyper-V performance comparisons vs physical client?

  Are there any comparisons between Hyper-V client machines and their physical equivalent? I've looked around and can find 4000 articles about improving Hyper-V performance, but I can't find any that actually do a side-by-side comparison or give benchmarking numbers. Ideally, I'm interested in a comparison of CPU, memory, disk, and graphics performance between something like the following: Some powerful workstation (with plenty of RAM) with Windows 7 installed on it directly Same exact worksation with Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the bare Server role) and a full-screen Windows 7 client machine Virtual Server 2005 had performance that didn't compare at all with actual hardware, but with the advances in CPU and hardware-level virtualization, has performance improved significantly? How obvious would it be to a user of the two above scenarios that one of them was virtualized, and does anybody know of actual benchmarking of this type?

• HTTP/1.1 Status Codes 400 and 417, cannot choose which

  I have been referred to here that it might be of better help, I've got a processing file which handles the user sent data, before that, however, it compares the input from client to the expected values to ensure no client-side data change. I can say I don't know lot about HTTP status codes, but I have made up some research on it, and to choose which one is the best for unexpected input handling. So I came up with: 400 Bad Request: The request cannot be fulfilled due to bad syntax 417 Expectation Failed: The server cannot meet the requirements of the Expect request-header field Now, I cannot be really sure which one to use, I have seen 400 Bad Request being used alot, however, whatI get from explanation is that the error is due to an unexistent request rather than an illegal input. On the other side 417 Expectation Failed seems to just fit for my use, however, I have never seen or experimented this header status before. I need your experience and opinions, thanks alot! • Is it common to have portable hard drive not recognize?

  I have a bad hard drive which could not be recognized by windows. If windows can recognize it, it could just be pure luck. There are better chance of it being recognize by plugging it at the usb back of the machine, rather than the front one. More interestingly, I have a usb cable which fork itself at one side ( i.e it has 2 heads at one side ). I can plug both heads to the machine and connect the portable hard drive on the other end of the usb cable? Can I get more voltage by doing this? I am guessing the front usb port doesn't have enough power. I am wondering if I buy a new portable usb hard drive, would it have easy read by plugging at the front usb port? I am not sure if I screw up the jumper connecting the front usb ports, but it is okay for other device such as usb stick and mouse.

• Windows 2003 DNS updates from ISC DHCP server

  We have a very mixed network, with most clients being Debian Lenny, the rest Windows XP/Vista/7. The network itself is split into two segments (for technical reasons) called "corporate" and "engineering". On the "corporate" side all clients get their IP addresses from a Windows DHCP server and the dynamic updates into the Windows DNS work just fine. On the "engineering" side, clients get their IP addresses from a linux machine running the standard ISC DHCP server. Although this server is configured to do dynamic DNS updates, they actually don't work. Anybody got any advice on how to fix this? Please note: dynamic updates from the clients directly into the DNS would work, but are not an option for us. So this is strictly on how make this work from an ISC DHCP server to a Windows DNS server.

I'm looking for a solution for my Mac and Linux computers that I've seen with most Windows printer drivers: Check "Manual duplex" in the printer screen Printer starts printing one side A dialog appears, asking me to flip the pages Printer prints the other side. One thing I can do, is print odd pages, then reopen the dialog and print even pages, but this is very inconvenient, especially when I only want to print a certain page range of the document as the Mac dialog forgets my previous page range every time. It gets even more inconvenient, when printing 2-up double sided, or when changing additional settings for this one printout. Is there maybe some tool, that can do this? Or maybe a "virtual printer driver" that can sit somewhere between the dialog and the actual printer driver, which manages these steps? (The Windows tool http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FinePrint can do something like that, but I don't need all of its features - and I need it on Mac/Linux) Thanks, Chris

• How does copy protection work?

  Many programs refuse to go beyond a trial period. Even if they are trashed and then reinstalled, they 'remember' that the trial period has expired. Assuming no contact with a licensing server, what is the general way that most copy protection works? Do programs drop files in random folders on the hard disk that are hard to track down? I know there's no registry on OSX/Linux, but perhaps something similar... ? Or must it be a file/folder? I'm actually not curious from a hacking side but rather from the implementation side, but in any case the question is basically the same.

• Apple XRaid questions

  I inherited an environment with a couple of apple xraid san. 1 - I have a 14 drive setup that's split into 5 LUNs on EACH side. The SAN goes into a fibre switch along w/ the servers that are attached to it. LUN masking is enabled on the SAN and as far as I know, there aren't any zoning on the fibre switch. Question, I have a server that's assigned two LUNs, one from each side of the controller. For some reason, it only sees one LUN (from the upper controller) and it doesn't see the one from the lower controller. The controller seems to be working fine as I have other servers attached to LUNs on the lower controller. 2 - I see a little "disclaimer" saying that any changes to the xraid will result in a reboot. So, if I add/remove hosts, this thing is going to reboot?!?!?!

• Cant logon to domain over site-to-site vpn

  Tied together branch office with main office over two Cisco ASAs. The (internal) networks on either side can communicate with the other. I can ping, use the DC's DNS service and even join a domain on a new client. I can't however logon, I get the "domain controller is not available" error message on client. I find nothing peculiar in DC's event logs. Sicne it's site-to-site (with ping), it's always up so it should work. No firewall rules (except allow any any) between the two networks (of either side). Main site internal net: 10.10.10.0/24 Branch office net: 10.180.3.0/24 Am I overlooking something here? Where should I start investigating this?d

• How to switch to user perspective in Blender

  I've just started using Blender (v2.63) for the first time. I have used a lot of 3d modelling programs in the past but Blender's controls seem to be set up differently and it's taking a while to get used to it. The thing that is really bugging me at the moment is switching from user perspective to front/side/top views. I have my view in perspective mode and I want to switch to front view in orthographic mode and then switch back to the view I had before. It seems that the only way is to press numpad-0 to go to camera view, rotate the screen a bit to get rid of the annoying black outline and then switch it back to perspective mode. Then sometimes when I go back to front view it's in perspective mode which is annoying as you never want front view in perspective, only orthographic mode. My question: Is there a way I can be in my user view in perspective mode, switch to front/side/top views in orthographic mode and then switch back to where I was before in my user mode and be back in perspective mode?
