  Pencil either runs as a Firefox extension or as a standalone application with XULRunner 1.9.2. For seasoned network professional having a MAC address of their own instead of a name :) this might not be that useful. However for a layperson like me this an invaluable resource. • What is a fast way to darken the vertices I'm rendering?

  To make a lighting system for a voxel game, I need to specify a darkness value per vertex. I'm using GL_COLOR_MATERIAL and specifying a color per vertex, like this: glEnable(GL_COLOR_MATERIAL); glBegin(GL_QUADS); glColor3f(0.6f, 0.6f, 0.6f); glTexCoord2f(...); glVertex3f(...); glColor3f(0.3f, 0.3f, 0.3f); glTexCoord2f(...); glVertex3f(...); glColor3f(0.7f, 0.7f, 0.7f); glTexCoord2f(...); glVertex3f(...); glColor3f(0.9f, 0.9f, 0.9f); glTexCoord2f(...); glVertex3f(...); glEnd(); This is working, but with many quads it is very slow.. I'm using display lists too. Any good ideas in how to make vertices darker?

• "Unrecoverable error" during installation

  I have an old Dell computer and I want to switch from windows xp and install the new ubuntu. I have tried multiple times to download it via cd-r but keep getting the same error message: unrecoverable error. The error happens after the menu which lists try ubuntu, install ubuntu, etc.It only gets as far as the Screen with a toolbar on the top that includes power, sound, and two arrows. That is when the message displays. switching to desktop version to find what the problem is( or something like that.) What is going wrong?

• Which, among the humble indie bundle V games, work on 10.04?

  Inevitably, I've coughed up for the latest Humble Bundle, containing 5 games: Amnesia, Bastion, Limbo, Psychonauts and Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery. At the download page it says download for ubuntu but after that it transpired (after much head scratching) that the three games it lists "are not available for your version of ubuntu". The other two, Bastion and Psychonauts "will appear on the page soon", but until then does anybody think they might work? I don't want to to be disappointed after downloading a 4gb file, causing me to reminisce on childhood memories of loading 8-bit tape games for 45 minutes only to find out that you had to reload them once you died after 30 seconds in.

• Unable to install flash plugin in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit). The upgrade went smoothly (far more than I expected). Unfortunately, I cannot seem to install the flash plugin in either Firefox or Chrome. chrome://plugins does not show flash. • How to download source code with apt-get?

  I'm trying to download source code of certain packages, for example rhythmbox, for learning purposes. I want to do this through apt-get, with the apt-get source command. For some reason, apt-get can't seem to find any package. I've tried several packages, and I keep getting this output from apt-get: $ apt-get source rhythmbox Reading package lists... Done E: Unable to find a source package for rhythmbox I've been searching for answers for quite some time now, but I can't find anyone with the same issue. apt-get works fine with installing and updating so apt-get works fine in my opinion. During the search I also learned that I had to enable the 'source code repositories' in Software Sources, so that's also enabled. I am aware of the fact that (maybe only for certain packages, not sure) source packages can also be downloaded with bzr from Launchpad, but I want to know why this method won't work.   I am a wondering if there is a recommended "best practice" for a product search SEO. I know to create a dynamic sitemap file that lists links to all products in the site. However, I want to implement a a bookmark-able "advanced search". Should I let search engines index any of the results? Take the following parameters for a search on a make believe used car website: minprice (minimum price in dollars) maxprice (maximum price in dollars) make (honda, audi, volvo) model (accord, A4, S40) minyear (minimum model year) maxyear (maximum model year) minmileage (minimum mileage) maxmileage (maximum mileage) Given these parameters, there could be an infinite number of search combinations: Price Between $10,000 and $20,000 /search?minprice=10000&maxprice&20000 Audis with less than 50k miles /search?model=audi&maxmileage=50000 More than 100,000 miles and less than $5,000 /search?minmileage=100000&maxprice=5000 etc. Over time, there may be inbound links to a variety of these types of searches, yet they are all slices of the same data. Should I allow for all of these searches to be indexed?

• Why is ssh-add adding duplicate identity keys?

  I have created a private/public SSH key pair using "ssh-keygen". I use this to authenticate to remote servers. However, I find that when I log in, "ssh-add -l" already lists my identity key even though I have not added it! If I use the command "ssh-add" it prompts me for my passphrase and loads my identity key. If I then list my keys with "ssh-add -l", it now shows two identity keys! These are obviously the same as both have the same fingerprint, but their descriptions are different (the automatically is "user@host (RSA)" and the one added using ssh-add is "/home/user/.ssh/id_rsa (RSA)"). So why does my identity key appear to be loaded without any action on my part, and why does ssh-add add the same key again? Obviously something must be doing this automatically, but what is it, and how can I stop it?

• What's better than outputdebugstring for windows debugging?

  So, before I came to my current place of employment, the windows OutputDebugString function was completely unheard of, everyone was adding debug messages to string lists and saving them to file or doing showmessage popups (not very useful for debugging drawing issues). Now everybody (all 6 of us) is like "What can I say about this OutputDebugString?" and I'm like, "with much power comes much responsibility." I kind of feel as though I've passed a silent but deadly code smell to my colleagues. Ideally we wouldn't have bugs to debug right? Ideally we'd have over 0% code coverage, eh? So as far as petty debugging is concerned (not complete rewriting of a 3 million line Delphi behemoth) what's a better way to use debug running code than just adding OutputDebugString all over?

• Stop bots from crawling old links with extensions

  I've recently switched to MVC3 which is extension-less for the URL's, but Google and Bing have a wealth of links that they are crawling which no longer exist. So I'm trying to find out if there is a way to format robots.txt (or by some other method) to tell google/bing that any link that ends in an extension isn't a valid link... Is this possible? On pages that I'm concerned about a User having saved as a fav I'm displaying a 404 page that lists the links to take once they are redirected to the new page (I decided to not just redirect them as I don't want to maintain these forever). For Google/Bing sake I do have the canonical tag in the header. User-agent: * Allow: / Disallow: /*.* EDIT: I just added the 3rd line (in text above) and it APPEARS to do what I'm wanting. Allow a path, but disallow a file. Can anyone confirm this?

  In a recent interview the JavaServer Faces specification lead, Ed Burns, gave an update on JSF 2.2. This is a required component of the Java EE 7 platform. The work is expected to wrap up by CY 2012 and the schedule is publicly available. The interview provide an update on how Tenant Scope from CDI and multi-templating will be included. • How can we stop GitHub from emailing too many people too much? [migrated]

  I recently joined a research team that uses R and Git/GitHub. The team includes 4 full-time R programmers and 10 social scientists who only run simple analyses. I was told by one of the more experienced programmers on the project that they haven't found a way to use many of GitHub's tools for collaboration (bug reports, to-do lists, code comments, etc.) because they generate emails to everyone who is a contributor to the repo every time. This is incredibly puzzling to me, so I'd love to hear from someone that there are ways to adjust the email settings. I'd expect there would be multiple ways, so that individuals could opt-in or opt-out of certain emails, and also so contributors could explicitly choose whether certain people get certain emails or not. Is it possible to adjust these settings?
