PHP shell_exec() - Run directly, or perform a cron (bash/php) and include MySQL layer?

Sorry if the title is vague - I wasn't quite sure how to word it! What I'm Doing I'm running a Linux command to output data into a variable, parse the data, and output it as an array. Array values will be displayed on a page using PHP, and this PHP page output is requested via AJAX every 10 seconds so, in effect, the data will be retrieved and displayed/updated every 10 seconds. There could be as many as 10,000 characters being parsed on every request, although this is usually much lower. Alternative Idea I want to know if there is a better* alternative method of retrieving this data every 10 seconds, as multiple users (<10) will be having this command executed automatically for them. A cronjob running on the server could execute either bash or php (which is faster?) to grab the data and store it in a MySQL database. Then, any AJAX calls to the PHP output would return values in the MySQL database rather than making a direct call to execute server code every 10 seconds. Why? I know there are security concerns with running execs directly from PHP, and (I hope this isn't micro-optimisation) I'm worried about CPU usage on the server. The server is running a sempron processor. Yes, they do still exist. Having this only execute when the user is on the page (idea #1) means that the server isn't running code that doesn't need to be run. However, is this slow and insecure? Just in case the type of linux command may be of assistance in determining it's efficiency: shell_exec("transmission-remote $host:$port --auth $username:$password -l"); I'm hoping that there are differences in efficiency and level of security with the two methods I have outlined above, and that this isn't just micro-micro-optimisation. If there are alternative methods that are better*, I'd love to learn about these! :)

Optimal (Time paradigm) solution to check variable within boundary

Hi All, Sorry if the question is very naive. I will have to check the below condition in my code 0 < x < y i.e code similar to if(x > 0 && x < y) The basic problem at system level is - currently, for every call (Telecom domain terminology), my existing code is hit (many times). So performance is very very critical, Now, I need to add a check for boundary checking (at many location - but different boundary comparison at each location). At very normal level of coding, the above comparison would look very naive without any issue. However, when added over my statistics module (which is dipped many times), performance will go down. So I would like to know the best possible way to handle the above scenario (kind of optimal way for limits checking technique). Like for example, if bit comparison works better than normal comparison or can both the comparison be evaluation in shorter time span? Other Info x is unsigned integer (which must be checked to be greater than 0 and less than y). y is unsigned integer. y is a non-const and varies for every comparison. Here time is the constraint compared to space. Language - C++. Now, later if I need to change the attribute of y to a float/double, would there be another way to optimize the check (i.e will the suggested optimal technique for integer become non-optimal solution when y is changed to float/double). Thanks in advance for any input. PS : OS used is SUSE 10 64 bit x64_64, AIX 5.3 64 bit, HP UX 11.1 A 64.

[PHP] Does unsetting array values during iterating save on memory?

Hello fellow code warriors, This is a simple programming question, coming from my lack of knowledge of how PHP handles array copying and unsetting during a foreach loop. It's like this, I have an array that comes to me from an outside source formatted in a way I want to change. A simple example would be: $myData = array('Key1' => array('value1', 'value2')); But what I want would be something like: $myData = array([0] => array('MyKey' => array('Key1' => array('value1', 'value2')))); So I take the first $myData and format it like the second $myData. I'm totally fine with my formatting algorithm. My question lies in finding a way to conserve memory since these arrays might get a little unwieldy. So, during my foreach loop I copy the current array value(s) into the new format, then I unset the value I'm working with from the original array. E.g.: $formattedData = array(); foreach ($myData as $key => $val) { // do some formatting here, copy to $reformattedVal $formattedData[] = $reformattedVal; unset($myData[$key]); } Is the call to unset() a good idea here? I.e., does it conserve memory since I have copied the data and no longer need the original value? Or, does PHP automatically garbage collect the data since I don't reference it in any subsequent code? The code runs fine, and so far my datasets have been too negligible in size to test for performance differences. I just don't know if I'm setting myself up for some weird bugs or CPU hits later on. some garbage(?), however the end contains the the lock which seems be holding the main thread. Can I trust this stack trace? If not, what can cause this and how I can avoid it? Any ideas about the dead lock based on this stack trace? I don't quite understand how creating a datamodule can dead lock.. I'm using Delphi 2007.

SOAP call with query on result (SSRS, Sharepoint)

Hi! I created a report in VS using a shared data source which is connected to a sharepoint list. I have created a parameter and when I preview the Report I see the dropdownbox which I can use to make a selection from the Title field, when I do this it still shows the first record, obviously it doens't work yet (DUH!) because I need to create a query somewhere, But! I have no idea where, I tried to include <Where> <Eq> <FieldRef Name="ows_Title" /> <Value Type="Text">testValue</Value> </Eq> </Where> in the the soap request but it didn't worked... I've searched teh intarwebz but couldn't find any simliar problems... kinda stuck now...any thoughts on this? How to call virtual function of an object in C++

I'm struggling with calling a virtual function in C++. I'm not experienced in C++, I mainly use C# and Java so I might have some delusions, but bear with me. I have to write a program where I have to avoid dynamic memory allocation if possible. I have made a class called List: template <class T> class List { public: T items[maxListLength]; int length; List() { length = 0; } T get(int i) const { if (i >= 0 && i < length) { return items[i]; } else { throw "Out of range!"; } }; // set the value of an already existing element void set(int i, T p) { if (i >= 0 && i < length) { items[i] = p; } else { throw "Out of range!"; } } // returns the index of the element int add(T p) { if (length >= maxListLength) { throw "Too many points!"; } items[length] = p; return length++; } // removes and returns the last element; T pop() { if (length > 0) { return items[--length]; } else { throw "There is no element to remove!"; } } }; It just makes an array of the given type, and manages the length of it. There is no need for dynamic memory allocation, I can just write: List<Object> objects; MyObject obj; objects.add(obj); MyObject inherits form Object. Object has a virtual function which is supposed to be overridden in MyObject: struct Object { virtual float method(const Input& input) { return 0.0f; } }; struct MyObject: public Object { virtual float method(const Input& input) { return 1.0f; } }; I get the elements as: objects.get(0).method(asdf); The problem is that even though the first element is a MyObject, the Object's method function is called. I'm guessing there is something wrong with storing the object in an array of Objects without dynamically allocating memory for the MyObject, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to call MyObject's method function? How? It's supposed to be a heterogeneous collection btw, so that's why the inheritance is there in the first place. If there is no way to call the MyObject's method function, then how should I make my list in the first place?

How can I get sikuli-ide to work?

I installed sikuli-ide with sudo apt-get install sikuli-ide Everything was fine until I tried to start it from the terminal. I typed sikuli-ide But the only response I got was [info] locale: en_US The application was not started, furthermore there is no desktop file and sikuli-ide does not show up in Dash Home. I guess there is something wrong with the package. I run Ubuntu 12.10 64bit. Defined variables and arrays vs functions in php

Introduction I have some sort of values that I might want to access several times each page is loaded. I can take two different approaches for accessing them but I'm not sure which one is 'better'. Three already implemented examples are several options for the Language, URI and displaying text that I describe here: Language Right now it is configured in this way: lang() is a function that returns different values depending on the argument. Example: lang("full") returns the current language, "English", while lang() returns the abbreviation of the current language, "en". There are many more options, like lang("select"), lang("selectact"), etc that return different things. The code is too long and irrelevant for the case so if anyone wants it just ask for it. Url The $Url array also returns different values depending on the request. The whole array is fully defined in the beginning of the page and used to get shorter but accurate links of the current page. Example: $Url['full'] would return "http://mypage.org/path/to/file.php?page=1" and $Url['file'] would return "file.php". It's useful for action="" within the forms and many other things. There are more values for $Url['folder'], $Url['file'], etc. Same thing about the code, if wanted, just request it. Text [You can skip this section] There's another array called $Text that is defined in the same way than $Url. The whole array is defined at the beginning, making a mysql call and defining all $Text[$i] for current page with a while loop. I'm not sure if this is more efficient than multiple calls for a single mysql cell. Example: $Text['54'] returns "This is just a test array!" which this could perfectly be implemented with a function like text(54). Question With the 3 examples you can see that I use different methods to do almost the same function (no pun intended), but I'm not sure which one should become the standard one for my code. I could create a function called url() and other called text() to output what I want. I think that working with functions in those cases is better, but I'm not sure why. So I'd really appreciate your opinions and advice. Should I mix arrays and functions in the way I described or should I just use funcions? Please, base your answer in this: The source needs to be readable and reusable by other developers Resource consumption (processing, time and memory). The shorter the code the better. Hi I have a index page the renders objects from my database as a treeview, each item has a link href="/MessageGroupType/Edit/1002 that makes an Ajax call to display a partial view in a DIV. Within the partial view there is a delete button which calls my controller to delete the item. However, i do a check to make sure the item can be deleted, if the item cant be deleted then i wish a pop-up to appear back on the edit form telling the user they cant delete this record. In my Edit partial view i have the following code " type="text/javascript" $(function() { $("#dialog").dialog(); }); <% if (Boolean.Parse(ViewData["DisplayWindow"].ToString())){% This Mesage group Type Cannot be deleted as is linked to other message group Types <% }% So my main questions are Can i make a reference to a javascript script within my Partial View (i dont want my master page to be called on the partial view) When i dynamically load the partial view data into my DIV - can i then after calling my controller insert another DIV into the first DIV. I am i doing this the wrong way - so any pointers is appreciated Cheers

MSDeploy: error using runCommand provider to call remote .cmd file (timeout)

We are running into an error when trying to use the MSDeploy "runCommand" provider to execute a .cmd file on a remote machine. The expected run time should be about 10 seconds, but MSDeploy only runs it for about 2-3 seconds, after which time error details are returned. Here is the complete MSDeploy "runCommand" command line text I am using: msdeploy.exe -verb:sync -source:runCommand="D:\web deploy tester\test_cmd.cmd",dontUseCommandExe=false,waitAttempts=5,waitInterval=1000 -dest:auto,computername=http://test-machine:89/MsDeployAgentService/,userName=aaa,password=bbb Here are the error details returned: Error 'Error: (4/21/2010 12:19:25 PM) An error occurred when the request was processed on the remote computer. I'd like to be able to do some additional logic behind the scene. The downside is that this class can't be changed (on C# level). Maybe some IL ?

I am a beginner to the facebook app programming.

mouse_event WinAPI call not working when cursor is over Flash

So, I need to parse that response from xml to some POJO. So, for parsing the xml response should I go with the basic DOM praser, or should I use any other J2ME specific prasing concept ? Hi All, We recently upgraded from 2005 to VS 2008 (Windows XP). We use SlimDx in one of our projects. All was working ok after the upgrade, except my "Recover" function, which gets called on devicelost/device reset which crashes with D3DERR_INVALIDCALL: Invalid call (-2005530516) I use Ctrl-Alt-Del and then "Escape" to simulate device lost. void Recover() { try { if (res.Code == D3DERR_DEVICENOTRESET) { res = m_device.Reset(m_presentParams); //Crashes on this. if (res.IsSuccess) { m_deviceLost = false; } } } catch(Exception e) {} } Is this something to do with VS2008, as it used to work nicely with 2005 Thanks for your help.

Return automatic download JQuery Ajax Call

I use the Ajax JQuery command to call a PHP script that generates a CSV file and returns a link to that file for the user to download. I would like to make this more user friendly by automatically starting the download so the user sees the browsers "Save or Open" window instead of having to click the download link. I'm guessing I need to somehow change the headers in the Ajax success callback function?? I'm not really sure what I should be titling my searches or even if this is possible. Thanks!

iphone dev: UIImageview subclass interface builder - how to call custom initializer

hi. I messing with iphone developement. I have a uiimageview subclass that I want to use to detect touches. I have sucessfully added to interfacebuilder and I can detect a touch in my UIImageview subclass within my application so all is good on that front. however my UIImageView subclass has a custom initializer which is not called when it is created in interface builder. if I manually initialize the UIImageview and add it programmatically I think it will work but then I lose the ability to 'see' my positioning in Interface builder. how can I either 1) 'see' a uiimageview in interface builder that is added in code? (not possible?) 2) call my custom initializer when the subclass is instantiated in interfacebuilder. thanks

hi, let's say i have something like this (very simplified): <pre><code> class base { void invoke() { this-foo(); } virtual void foo() = 0; }; class FirstDerived : public base { void foo() { // do stuff } }; class SecondDerived : public FirstDerived { // other not related stuff } int main() { SecondDerived *a = new SecondDerived(); a-invoke(); } What i see in the debugger is that base::invoke() is called and tries to call this-foo(); (i expect FirstDerived::foo() to be called), the debugger takes me to some unfamiliar assembly code (probably because it jumped to unrelated areas) and after few lines i get segmentation fault. am i doing something wrong here? :/ thanks in advance

Hi guys, Here is my scenario. When anonymous user visits site collection's default site, custom login form panel is shown. This form is a webUserControl(.ascx file) that is embeded into page as webpart. Then user enters username and password. When submit button has been clicked, authentication will be handled by code behind of custom login form panel. Here is my question. How can I call SharePoint's authentication method with the username and password that is entered by user. Simply, I want users to login through my custom login form panel because default windows authentication window is looking really bad.

I am having a lot of trouble finding good information on how to call a standard SOAP/WSDL web service with Android. All I've been able to find are either very convoluted documents and references to "kSoap2" and then some bit about parsing it all manually with SAX. ... Ok, that's fine but it's 2008 so I figured there should be some good library for calling standard web services. The Web Service is just basically one created in NetBeans. I would like to have IDE support for generating the plumbing classes. I just need the easiest/most-elegant way to contact a WSDL based web service from an Android based phone. Thanks.

This is the system call, i am making right now in perl to tar the files system("${tarexe} -pcvf $tarname $includepath") which works fine. $tarexe -> location of my tar.exe file $tarname -> myMock.tar $includepath -> ./input/myMockPacketName ./input/myPacket/my2/*.wav ./input/myPacket/my3 ./input/myPacket/in.html Now i want to exclude some files using exclude tag, which doesnot exclude the files system("${tarexe} -pcvf $tarname $includepath --exclude $excludepath") $excludepath -> ./input/myMockPacketName/my3 The same stament ${tarexe} -pcvf $tarname $includepath --exclude $excludepath works fine when i run it in the command line.
