• Acer Aspire One (mini) mfgd 9/03 locks up also when plugged in

  My problem is almost the same as the Toshiba user (Toshiba A205-5804 freezes when plugged in): Well I have a Toshiba A205-5804 and the problem is that the screen freezes anytime I plug the pc into the external power supply, not as most of the computers having the same issue, my computer DOES freeze in safe mode, and I really can't bear this problem for much longer... It's not an overheat problem, the computer is not getting hot or anything related, I've tried already to change the AC adapter, to boot only with AC and no battery, and also all of these suggestions: The only difference in my case is: I can be using the battery and when it runs down, I can just close the lid and the system goes into hibernation mode. I then plug it in and let it charge. When I think it's finally charged, I can UNPLUG it, open the lid and all is running fine on the battery again. Note: the system was NOT shut down and it still runs as long as I remove the power plug before opening the lid. I have ALL the same issues as the other Toshiba user, also. I was a tech for 9 yrs in my own business and this one has not only stumped me, but anyone I have asked has never heard of this problem. Every repair center wants to charge me for diagnosis, even is they cannot fix it. I would really like to run this system along side of my new Acer Aspire 17" laptop as I need it to finish my grad school work. Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanx, Laurie Ann

• Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition

  We (our company) are planning to deploy Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 Desktop Edition to our 3000 - 4000 workstations (Windows7 32 and 64) with a few 100s with Windows XP 32/64 Bit. I have read the implementation guide for SEP and have read tech-notes for Desktop Recovery 2011. Our team have planned to deploy this as follows : 1 x dedicated SQL 2008R2 for Symantec Endpoint Protection (Instead of using the Embedded Database) 1 x Dedicated SQL 2008R2 for Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 (Instead of using the Embedded Database) 1 x Dedicated W2K8 R2 Box for the SEPM (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager - Mgmt. APP) 1 x Dedicated W2K8 R2 Box for the Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 Management Application Agent Deployment : As per Symantec Documentation for both of the above, an agent can be pushed via the Mgmt. Application (provided no firewalls are blocking ports required etc. - we have Windows firewall disabled already). Above is the initial plan we have for 3000 - 4000 client workstation (Windows) Now my Questions :-) a) If we had these users distributed amongst two sites with AD DC / GC in each site, How would I restrict SEPM and Desktop Mgmt. solution to only check for users in their respective site ? b) At present all users are under one building but we are going to move some dept. to a new location (with dedicated connectivity), How would we control which SEPM / MGMT Server is responsible for which site ? c) What Hardware would you recommend as a Server spec for the SQL server 16GB RAM, Dual XEON? d) What Hardware would you recommend as a Server spec for the MGMT Servers 16GB RAM each with DUAL xeon and sas disks? e) Also, how do you or would you recommend to protect these 4 servers (2 x SQL and 2 x MGMT Servers)? f) How would you recommend to store backups for these desktops? We do have a SAN and a NAS in our environment and we do have one spare DAS (Dell MD3000). If you have anything to add / correct - that will be really helpful before diving into the actual implementation phase. • Superpower Your Touchpad Computer with Scrybe

  Are you looking for a way to help your Touchpad computer make you more productive?  Here’s a quick look at Scrybe, a new application from Synaptics that lets you superpower it. Touchpad devices have become increasingly more interesting as they’ve included support for multi-touch gestures.  Scrybe takes it to the next level and lets you use your touchpad as an application launcher.  You can launch any application, website, or complete many common commands on your computer with a simple gesture.  Scrybe works with most modern Synaptics touchpads, which are standard on most laptops and netbooks.  It is optimized for newer multi-touch touchpads, but can also work with standard single-touch touchpads.  It works on Windows 7, Vista, and XP, so chances are it will work with your laptop or netbook. Get Started With Scrybe Head over to the Scrybe website and download the latest version (link below).  You are asked to enter your email address, name, and information about your computer…but you actually only have to enter your email address.  Click Download when finished. Run the installer when it’s download.  It will automatically download the latest Synaptics driver for your touchpad and any other components needed for Scrybe.  Note that the Scrybe installer will ask to install the Yahoo! toolbar, so uncheck this to avoid adding this worthless browser toolbar. Using Scrybe To open an application or website with a gesture, press 3 fingers on your touchpad at once, or if your touchpad doesn’t support multi-touch gestures, then press Ctrl+Alt and press 1 finger on your touchpad.  This will open the Scrype input pane; start drawing a gesture, and you’ll see it on the grey square.  The input pane shows some default gestures you can try. Here we drew an “M”, which opens our default Music player.  As soon as you finish the gesture and lift up your finger, Scrybe will open the application or website you selected. A notification balloon will let you know what gesture was preformed. When you’re entering your gesture, the input pane will show white “ink”.  The “ink” will turn blue if the command is recognized, but will turn red if it isn’t.  If Scrybe doesn’t recognize your command, press 3 fingers and try again. Scrybe Control Panel You can open the Scrybe Control panel to enter or change commands by entering a box-like gesture, or right-clicking the Scrybe icon in your system tray and selecting “Scrybe Control Panel”. Scrybe has many pre-configured gestures that you can preview and even practice. All of the gestures in the Popular tab are preset and cannot be changed.  However, the ones in the favorites tab can be edited.  Select the gesture you wish to edit, and click the gear icon to change it.  Here we changed the email gesture to open Hotmail instead of the default Yahoo Mail. Scrybe can also help you perform many common Windows commands such as Copy and Undo.  Select the Tools tab to see all of these commands.   Scrybe has many settings you may wish to change.  Select the Preferences button in the Control Panel to change these.  Here’s some of the settings we changed. Uncheck “Display a message” to turn off the tooltip notifications when you enter a gesture Uncheck “Show symbol hints” to turn off the sidebar on the input pane Select the search engine you want to open with the Search Gesture.  The default is Yahoo, but you can choose your favorite. Adding a new Scrybe Gesture The default Scrybe options are useful, but the best part is that you can assign gestures to your own programs or websites.  Open the Scrybe control panel, and click the plus sign on the bottom left corner.  Enter a name for your gesture, and then choose if it is for a website or an application. If you want the gesture to open a website, enter the address in the box. Alternately, if you want your gesture to open an application, select Launch Application and then either enter the path to the application, or click the button beside the Launch field and browse to it. Now click the down arrow on the blue box and choose one of the gestures for your application or website. Your new gesture will show up under the Favorites tab in the Scrybe control panel, and you can use it whenever you want from Scrybe, or practice the gesture by selecting the Practice button. Conclusion If you enjoy multi-touch gestures, you may find Scrybe very useful on your laptop or netbook.  Scrybe recognizes gestures fairly easily, even if you don’t enter them perfectly correctly.  Just like pinch-to-zoom and two-finger scroll, Scrybe can quickly become something you miss on other laptops. • How to restore broken Ethernet functionality on Mac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger)

  I had a disk error that rendered my Mac unbootable. I repaired it with Tech Tool 4, but now networking does not work. Network Preferences reports that my Ethernet cable is unplugged. I know this is bogus because when I boot from an emergency partition, networking works correctly. Furthermore, wireless networking is also broken, which I tested with a known-good Wi-Fi dongle. Whenever I try to change Network Port Configurations by creating a New or Renaming an existing one, example: I get this message in the console: Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! In sets of two as shown. When I try to invoke the Network Diagnostics app, it immediately crashes. My first thought is to reinstall Tiger with the Archive and Install method so I don't have to reinstall all my applications but I have lost my Tiger installer disk. My next thought is to buy Leopard for $107 on Amazon. If there is any way I can just repair my Tiger install I would be happy to save that money, though. This is not my main machine and I am loathe to put more money into it. How can I recover my network functionality? UPDATE: I found my Tiger install disk and tried an Archive and Install. It failed with an unhelpful error message along the lines of "Can't install, try again". I tried again but had the same error. My guess is, some corrupt or missing file in my User folder is preventing migration. I have a backup created with Super Duper that is a bit out of date but will startup the machine (with functional networking). I would love to just copy over the file(s) that got messed up but I don't even know where to look. What is the likely location of the System files that would cause the aforementioned symptoms?

• Is there a small business router that shows bandwidth usage graphs in the admin panel?

  I support a large number of public libraries that are having their networks upgraded in response to a grant application. These libraries are generally home to between 6-15 computers and have little or no tech services either onsite or contracted remotely. In order to justify current and future purchases, a number of the libraries have requested routers that can provide bandwidth usage graphs that they can show to their managing boards. Is there a small business router that displays traffic graphs in the router administration web interface? The router needs to suppport DHCP and basic firewalling. No other features are required. Further, the reports just need to show overall trends. It is not necessary to show traffic by IP, by protocol/application, or by time of day. They just need an overall week to week, month to month, trend line. I'm familiar with MRTG/PRTG/tools that collect SNMP data from the router, but the libraries don't have the expertise for the configuration. I've considered installing the tomato firmware on some cheap home/home office routers, but if there's a commercial product that can be purchased that would be significantly simpler. Also the library boards would be much more likely to approve the purchase of a commercial product over a 'hacked' one. Any assistance would be appreciated.

• Dell XPS m1530 system cannot boot need 130w or greater

  I have a Dell XPS M1530 and I lost my old AC adapter but ordered a new one. For the longest time it always had a battery charge so I was able to boot into the OS but now it is completely dead. I have a generic charger that slowly charged the laptop when it was in the OS but does not when the computer is off. When I boot up I get the following error: The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. The system can only boot with a 130 W power adapter or greater. Strike F1 key to shutdown. I cannot even enter the BIOs setup screen or boot menu, is there a way around this? I heard from the local tech that Dell has a special feature to boot from thumb drive before getting past the initial logo. I am doing my best to avoid purchasing a new charger since it worked just fine when the OS was running, I am hoping to get this thing going. Is there a way to charge the battery externally? Thanks in advance for any help!

• Instant connection to wireless network but delayed internet access on Mediacom with Windows 7

  I have Mediacom cable internet and their provided modem/wireless router a Cisco DPC3825. Each of the laptops experiencing the trouble have Windows 7 64-bit. When connecting to the wireless network each computer will take a second or two to connect and then toggle from "no internet access" to "internet access" however, no websites are accessible for about five minutes after connecting. After that, there aren't any problems. It happens on all 3 of the laptops I have available and none of them have problems on any other network. It seems like my phone doesn't have the delay issue when it connects. I've power cycled the modem/router along with a DNS flush. I have some of the DNS servers manually set to Google DNS addresses and one just default. I've contacted and had Mediacom support try all its tricks. They changed the SSID and password along with resetting the thing remotely a handful of times. It was installed just this month and seemed to pass the tech's checks upon installation. Nothing in the settings has been changed, but it's been exhibiting this problem from the get go. • cPanel web server redundancy advice?

  At present I operate a (reasonably low volume) web-hosting service with a Centos 5.3 server running cPanel/WHM. I would like to implement a level of redundancy such that in the event of server failure, I can restore service with a minimum of effort in less than 60 minutes. I also want to setup a secondary DNS that cPanel will replicate with. My current idea is to kill two birds with one stone by: My current server is called "www1" Purchase an identical server (HP DL360 G4) with mirrored disks. Call this server "www2" Install Centos 5.4 (or perhaps I should install 5.3 to be identical with www1) Install cPanel/WHM on this server and fully license it Setup www1 and www2 cPanel to replicate DNS with each other Setup a nightly replication script that does the following: a) rsync's the /home directory from www1 to www2 b) dumps all MySQL databases on www1 and copies them to a temp folder (with root access only) on www2 c) triggers a script to run on www2 that restores the MySQL dumps Thus each night a fully working copy of all the websites and MySQL databases is copied to www2. I do not have enough knowledge of MySQL replication to understand if it works safely and transparently with cPanel. Thus I propose the mysql dump/copy/restore due to not knowing any better! In the event that www1 dies a horrible death, I envisage that I could login to www2, change the IP addresses to those that www1 had, and presto, the websites are available again. The advantage of this idea is that it is fairly simple and "low tech" and thus does not require an expert sysadmin to setup and monitor (I am NOT an expert sysadmin) The disadvantage of this idea is that up to a full days worth of data changes would be lost. I think this would be acceptable to the sorts of customers I host at the moment. The other disadvantage would be having to pay for a full cPanel license, but I am comfortable with that cost, so for now all I want to discuss are technical considerations. Is this a sound scheme?

• Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. Please, please, someone have the answer. Here are my system specs: -Intel i7-3770k -AsRock z77 Extreme3 -Samsung 840 pro SSD -WD Caviar Black 1tb

• Win8/7/XP print spooler not getting along with Zebra ZT230 via WIFI

  I have a graphics-intensive 4"x6" label I'm printing to the ZT230. I'm printing multiple (10) copies. When connected via USB, all goes well. However, when connected via wifi, I only get 2 of the labels. A wireshark capture shows that at some point in the process my computer (presumably my windows spooler) is sending a reset packet, which, I believe, would pretty much kill the print job. I'm getting the same results on Win8, Win7 and WinXP. The print job was originally generated on Zebra's ZebraDesigner2 software. For easier diagnosis, I captured it to a .prn file. • Some URLs fail to load on Windows web portal

  I’m working in a large data center and have been assigned to troubleshoot and issue with a windows (IIS) web server that acts as a portal for a customer of the data center. This portal server is on a DMZ at the local data center. I don’t have access to the portal desktop and am relying on an off-site administrator to work with me to do testing and report the condition of the portal. He tells me there are no software firewalls or other filtering configured. While most of the remote web pages work fine, several of the URSs the portal is suppose to serve up fail to load. I had wireshark installed on the portal system and had a capture taken of one of the failures. I used IE to access one of the remote web servers at issue. I could see the TCP SYN-ACK coming back from the remote server, but after several HTTP GETs fail to get a response the portal server sends a reset. The webmaster of the remote web server assures me that no sites are being blocked. I had a capture taken outside the local firewall, so there should be no issue there. Another tech set up a laptop and used the IP address of the portal (we took the portal off-line for the test). The laptop loads the URL as expected. I tried having Firefox loaded to make sure that the HTTP GET was not mal-formed. Same failure as with IE. So, it seems it is not the remote web server or the network, because there was no problem with the laptop. At this point, I’m not sure what other questions to ask or tests to do.

• How to give wife emergency access to logins, passwords, etc.?

  I'm the digital guru in my household. My wife is good with email and forum websites but she trusts me with all our important digital stuff -- such as online banking and other things that require passwords, but also family photos and the plethora of other digital things in a modern home. We discuss relevant actions but it's always me that executes the actions. If I should get "hit by a bus" then my wife would be thoroughly stranded -- she would have no idea what digital stuff is where on our computer, how to access it, what online accounts we have, and their login credentials are. It would also leave my many public appearances (personal websites, email accounts, social networks, etc.) unresolved. To complicate things, I'm one of those people who don't use password as my password everywhere; I use a mix of SuperGenPass and LastPass, and also two-factor authentication whenever possible. I don't have much hope that she would find her way through a written explanation of all that in a stressful situation. I could just tell her that she should ask my tech-savvy twin brother and then entrust him with my LastPass master passphrase. I feel that would have a high chance of success, but it's inelegant and leaves my wife without control of the information. How can I ensure that my wife has access to my digital remains?

• Recommendations for colocation in the US

  Hello serverfault I work for a European media company and we are currently looking for colocation in the US. I know the European market quite well unfortunately that is not the case for the US. I'm hoping for you guys to help me out a bit with a few questions, it would be much appreciated! I am looking for a data center that can deliver a high level of availability (tier 3 or better). The installation will be fairly large so capacity is important. Good internet connectivity/carrier presence. However most important is good customer support, skilled dedicated and responsive technical staff, since we won't have tech staff close by. I'm looking for a small and fast moving company that target internet businesses rather than big old enterprise hosting. What locations should we go for given that we want to reach all of the US from a single site and still maintain decent latency? (do we need east and west coast?) Where are the main internet hubs and should you try and get as close as possible? Are there any good online resources I should look at? Where do the large scale internet/media services colocate? Lastly I would be very happy to get some actual recommendations for companies to talk to P.S I'm happy to return the favor if anyone has question regarding data centers and colocation in Europe.

• Debugging a Drobo that chokes Windows 7x64 When Plugged In

  I've had a love hate relationship with my Drobo for a long time. After two years of using it on a Linux box, I moved it over to a Windows 7 machine where it seemed to work just fine for a long time, but it was under very light usage. Mainly backups that never actually happened. Recently I began using it for additional backup services (through CrashPlan, which is great). This means the Drobo gets a lot more usage. Also it means that something interesting happens, the Drobo can choke my system on startup. Here's what I mean: Start computer without Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard services disabled: 105s Start computer with Drobo plugged in Crashplan disabled, Drobo Dashboard enabled: 250s (and 1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard disabled: 250s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, Crashplan and Drobo Dashboard enabled: 300s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) If I yank the USB plug on the Drobo the CPU usage goes down to nothing very quickly. The slow startup in the fourth scenario is because CrashPlan is trying desperately to load stuff up on the H: drive before it gives up, so I've disabled it for the time being. So here's my question: What the heck is going on when I plug the drobo in? I've fired up Process Explorer and see that the System process is hogging the CPU, specifically it's an ntoskrnl.exe/KdPollBreakIn thread that's going ape. Is this something that's wrong with Drobo? Windows? Any idea on how to find out? If it matters, here's tech info: Athlon 64x2 4400, 2GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate, Drobo USB (2x1TB, 2x320GB)

• PASS: 2013 Summit Location

  HQ recently posted a brief update on our search for a location for 2013.  It includes links to posts by four Board members and two community members. I’d like to add my thoughts to the mix and ask you a question.  But I can’t give you a real understanding without telling you some history first. So far we’ve had the Summit in Chicago, San Francisco, Orlando, Dallas, Denver and Seattle.  Each has a little different feel and distinct memories.  I enjoyed getting drinks by the pool in Orlando after the sessions ended.  I didn’t like that our location in Dallas was so far away from all the nightlife.  Denver was in downtown but we had real challenges with hotels.  I enjoyed the different locations.  I always enjoyed the announcement during the third keynote with the location of the next Summit. There are two big events that impacted my thinking on the Summit location.  The first was our transition to the new management company in early 2007.  The event that September in Denver was put on with a six month planning cycle by a brand new headquarters staff.  It wasn’t perfect but came off much better than I had dared to hope.  It also moved us out of the cookie cutter conferences that we used to do into a model where we have a lot more control.  I think you’ll all agree that the production values of our last few Summits have been fantastic.  That Summit also led to our changing relationship with Microsoft.  Microsoft holds two seats on the PASS Board.  All the PASS Board members face the same challenge: we all have full-time jobs and PASS comes in second place professionally (or sometimes further back).  Starting in 2008 we were assigned a liaison from Microsoft that had a much larger block of time to coordinate with us.  That changed everything between PASS and Microsoft.  Suddenly we were talking to product marketing, Microsoft PR, their event team, the Tech*Ed team, the education division, their user group team and their field sales team – locally and internationally.  We strengthened our relationship with CSS, SQLCAT and the engineering teams.  We had exposure at the executive level that we’d never had before.  And their level of participation at the Summit changed from under 100 people to 400-500 people.  I think those 400+ Microsoft employees have value at a conference on Microsoft SQL Server.  For the first time, Seattle had a real competitive advantage over other cities. I’m one that looked very hard at staying in Seattle for a long, long time.  I think those Microsoft engineers have value to our attendees.  I think the increased support that Microsoft can provide when we’re in Seattle has value to our attendees.  But that doesn’t tell the whole story.  There’s a significant (and vocal!) percentage of our membership that wants the Summit outside Seattle.  Post-2007 PASS doesn’t know what it’s like to have a Summit outside of Seattle.  I think until we have a Summit in another city we won’t really know the trade-offs. I think a model where we move every third or every other year is interesting.  But until we have another Summit outside Seattle and we can evaluate the logistics and how important it is to have depth and variety in our Microsoft participation we won’t really know. Another benefit that comes with a move is variety or diversity.  I learn more when I’m exposed to new things and new people.  I believe that moving the Summit will give a different set of people an opportunity to attend. Grant Fritchey writes “It seems that the board is leaning, extremely heavily, towards making it a permanent fixture in Seattle.”  I don’t believe that’s true.  I know there was discussion of that earlier but I don’t believe it’s true now. And that brings me to my question.  Do we announce the city now or do we wait until the 2012 Summit?  I’m happy to announce Seattle vs. not-Seattle as soon as we sign the contract.  But I’d like to leave the actual city announcement until the 2011 Summit.  I like the drama and mystery of it.  I also like that it doesn’t give you a reason to skip a Summit and wait for the next one if it’s closer or back in Seattle.  The other side of the coin is that your planning is easier if you know where it is.  What do you think?

All of the examples that I have found do not address durability -- if a websockets server goes down, all "channel" data is lost. Services such as Pusher do not really discuss whether they address the durability issue (and I have not received a response from tech support yet). Happy to roll my own, but would rather not reinvent the wheel. EDIT: I'm not looking for websockets 101 information. That is readily available and understood. I'm looking for a server (open source or paid) that supports websockets and has a durable store for the websocket data so that, in the event that a server fails, a new server can take over where the original one left off. Two main purposes: 1. support failover scenarios contemplated by the websockets Network Working Group http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ibc-websocket-dns-srv-02#section-5.1 (most importantly so that missed messages are sent when a client connects to a failover server) 2. support scenarios where new subscribers must receive all past messages that were published. Of course this can be handled at the application layer...but that is not what I am looking for.

• Laptop Acer Travelmate 4050 takes over 10 Mins to POST

  Hi, I am a computer tech and have received a laptop for repair. I noticed when I turned it on the laptop would not do anything for a min or two (the fan would run up and stop, power led would shine and some cd rom activity then stop). It would sit there with a black screen. Suddenly after a random number of minutes (between 1-20mins!) the Acer BIOS screen would display and POST would happen before booting into Windows XP. It has frozen in XP at various times and pointed towards a CPU fault and over heating. The fan was on its last legs, sounded like a car engine, so I replaced this. Still same issues. I next replaced the CPU like for like. Same problems. Also applied new thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink, when running the fan kicks in occasionally (not as often as I thought it would) and I left it playing mp3, online radio and updating to service pack 3 and it wouldnt freeze. shutting down ok, cold start, not ok. Waits again before showing the BIOS screen. The hard disk was also making a screaming noise (SMART test and chkdsk passed) but I also replaced this. The laptop powers up with and without the battery so dont think its a battery issue. Running out of ideas and wondered if anyone had any advice. Thanks

• Is there any way to retire a AT&T Yahoo Email Account

  Here are the facts as I (pretty sure) know them. Yahoo handles AT&T's DSL email accounts. I've called AT&T tech support and customer service and they say they can't help, but there has GOT to be a way to do this. It's too simple of a thing not to be able to do. I got behind on my dsl bill and my account got suspended. When I paid my bill, they said my account had been deactivated and I had to get a new account. When I tried to register my account with my old email address it would not let me, saying it was in use. I used a new email. The old email address is tied to a dsl account that can NEVER be reactivated. There has got to be a way to retire the old email address so that I can re-create it as a subaccount on my new dsl account. I'm not interested in anything that was in the old account (emails, addresses, etc) - I just want the address back.

• Trouble cloning a Macbook Pro hard drive

  I am trying to upgrade the 250GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro (early 2008 model) to a 750GB drive. I have connected the new drive via an external USB enclosure. The drive is recognized fine, I can format it, etc. However, every time I try to clone the drive, I am getting Input/Output errors. Before the clone operation, I have verified both the internal and the external drive using Disk Utility, and they both check out fine. After the clone operation, the external drive shows multiple "Invalid node structure" errors: I have tried two approaches for cloning the drive: Using Disk Utility, by starting from the OSX install DVD Using Carbon Copy Cloner The outcome is the same in both cases. The Carbon Copy Cloner logs show a handful of the following types of errors: rsync: mkstemp "<... an external filename ...>" failed: Input/output error (5) rsync: stat "<... an external filename ...>" failed: Input/output error (5) The actual files affected seem to be different across different runs of the application. Before the last run, I used Disk Utility to (once more) reformat the external drive and explicitly overwrite it with zeros, but this made no difference. I also tried running a surface scan in Tech Tool Pro overnight. It got about 2/3 of the way through before I had to disconnect the drive (had to take my MacBook Pro to work), but so far it didn't report any bad blocks. Assuming it scans the drive in the same order in which blocks would be allocated during actual use, it seems like if bad blocks were to blame for the clone failures, they should have been found already (given that the source drive is only 250GB). As a last attempt, I may try SuperDuper as well, although my understanding is that it uses the same underlying rsync approach as Carbon Copy Cloner, so it's unlikely to perform any better. Are there any other things I should try before I send the drive in for a replacement? Could these problems be caused by my internal drive, even though it works fine and checks out fine in Disk Utility?

• Investigating a potential CPU failure

  On a Ubuntu server that I am using for computations I have recently observed that some CPU extensive programs (GUROBI,CPLEX) often segfault. Being in correspondence with tech support of the respective programs I was suggested that it may be a hardware issue. The administrator of the server performed a detailed memtest and it turned out that the RAM modules appear to be fine. Hence I've used the tool mprime to test the CPU and the following two lines appear multiple times durring the execution of the stress tests: [Worker #4 Oct 18 18:47] FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.498046875, expected less than 0.4 [Worker #4 Oct 18 18:47] Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file. The stress.txt file in itself is not very verbose about what could be the cause of this error so I would like to ask whether anyone here happens to know what could be the cause of this issue? Is there some other test I could perform to nail the problem even further? The temperature of the system (and all cores) was fine during the entire stress test (+69.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +98.0°C)) the CPU in question is a Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz and is not overclocked or modified in any way. Also what is interesting that if I run mprime to only stress the CPU all tests pass fine. The error is only triggered when I let mprime stress the CPU+RAM.

I was not able to find any open source that provided "out of the box" clustering, fail-over, and a durable message store to play back history. There are some projects that may serve as good starting points, but not exactly what I am looking for.

• Moving Zend Framework 2 from apache to nginx

  I would like to move site that uses Zend Framework 2 from Apache to Nginx. The problem is that site have 6 modules, and apache handles it by aliases defined in httpd-vhosts.conf, #httpd-vhosts.conf <VirtualHost _default_:443> ServerName localhost:443 Alias /develop/cpanel "C:/webapps/develop/mil_catele_cp/public" Alias /develop/docs/tech "C:/webapps/develop/mil_catele_tech_docs/public" Alias /develop/docs "C:/webapps/develop/mil_catele_docs/public" Alias /develop/auth "C:/webapps/develop/mil_catele_auth/public" Alias /develop "C:/webapps/develop/mil_web_dicom_viewer/public" DocumentRoot "C:/webapps/mil_catele_homepage" </VirtualHost> in httpd.conf DocumentRoot is set to C:/webapps. Sites are avialeble at for example localhost/develop/cpanel. Framework handles further routing. In Nginx I was able to make only one site available by specifing root C:/webapps/develop/mil_catele_tech_docs/public; in server block. It works only because docs module don't depend on auth like others, and site was at localhost/. In next attempt: root C:/webapps; location /develop/auth { root C:/webapps/develop/mil_catele_auth/public; try_files $uri $uri/ /develop/mil_catele_auth/public/index.php$is_args$args; } Now as I enter localhost/develop/cpanel it gets to correct index.php but can't find any resources (css,js files). I have no Idea why reference paths in browswer's GET requsts changed to https://localhost/css/bootstrap.css form https://localhost/develop/auth/css/bootstrap.css as it was on apache. This root directive seems not working. Nginx handles php by using fastCGI location ~ \.(php|phtml)?$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param APPLICATION_ENV production; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } I googled whole day, and found nothing usefull. Can someone help me make this configuration work like on Apache?

• Dell Dimension 8400 Startup error

  Hello all, thanks first for taking the time to read this and possibly help me...... now I am pretty decent of a computer tech...but not enough. I am having an issue with my computer which is running windows xp and as I mentioned it is a dell Dimension 8400. as soon as I power the system up the fan goes into hyper drive (spins like crazy and is very loud) then the start up screen with dell comes up and the loading bar gets stuck on the process of "Bios Revision A00" and never loads beyound that. I have read alot about it and think that the main problem was that it can not locate the file (which does have an updated version) I think it is A09. I can not enter safe mode, Bios mode or anything. I do have the file on my other computer and I was wondering if there is a way that I can use a usb flash drive (as I have read on other sites) to create a bootable MS-Dos diskette but I am failing at creating as such....is this possible? or is there anything else I can do? I tried to remove the battery from the system for about 10 minutes while it was completely unplug and tried then to reboot it and go into the bios menu but the same thing keeps happening....can anyone help me :-(
