• How can I set up jnlp for use with Sinatra?

  I have a website currently running Sinatra and a bunch of other technologies. I wanted to get progress bars running, but that's been a no go. So, a friend of mine whipped up a quick upload in Java, and I'm running that through scponly (chrooted) to make sure they can't do anything funny with changing directories and suchlike. But how can I start the jnlp file from Sinatra? Is it as simply as making it a link and then letting it be downloaded by the user? This code suggests otherwise, but there are a lot of things in there I don't understand (probably because I'm not reading it in the context of the larger program there).

  Hi, Our client-server product has the protocol between them as XML over HTTP. Here, the client asks a GET/POST query to the web server and the server responds with XML. The server is written using django. The server has to be on the web because there are many clients across the world using this. The server code uses extensive memoization and also there is very less db queries - most queries dont have any db queries, some of them has max 1. The biggest problem is the speed. Every query takes close to 5 seconds for the reply. The data replied is also very less - in the range of 4-6 Kb. What are the mechanisms to improve speed of the web service? Is this the usual way of writing a client-server? Are there other technologies and are we missing out on it? Thank you K

• Should I start a General Software Developer User Group? [closed]

I've found a Linux user group, and a .Net user group, but I'd like to spend my time outside of the office learning about Python, Android, JQuery -- mostly things that aren't owned by .Net. I'm debating trying to start another user group of some sort there, primarily to attract programmers who use technologies other than .Net. What are some of the more general programming user groups in existence already? I'm looking for something I could franchise.

• Will HTML 5 kill Flash? Is it even worth my time to learn Flash?

  Apple is always in the news these days with "i" this and "i" that. One of the biggest beefs people have with Apple is the lack of Flash support. Last year I held the same belief, Apple's choice to exclude Flash support just seemed senseless. HTML 5 seems to have changed this though. One of the most popular users of Flash is YouTube, and they are already getting on the HTML 5 bandwagon (http://www.youtube.com/html5). Still, I am torn between the two technologies. What is your take? Is it better for a budding developer to learn Flash or should their efforts be devoted to HTML5?

  Douglas Crockford describes the consequence of Javascript inquiring a node's style. How simply asking for the margin of a div causes the browser to 'reflow' the div in the browser's rendering engine four times. So that made me wonder, during the initial rendering of a page (or in Crockford's jargon a "web scroll") is it faster to write CSS that defines only the non-zero/non-default values? To provide an example: div{ margin-left:2px; } Than div{ margin:0 0 0 2px; } I know consequence of this 'savings' is insignificant, but I think it is still important to understand how the technologies are implemented. • Are there any other Java schedulers besides Quartz(FOSS) and Flux(Commercial)

  I am interested in finding out about other job scheduling packages besides Quartz and Flux. Given the plethora of web frameworks i find it perculiar that there is really only one scheduler. Are there others that perhaps are very much unknown/unpopular ? Spring Batch Not really a scheduling solution but rather a batch job coordinator etc. http://static.springsource.org/spring-batch/faq.html#schedulers How does Spring Batch differ from Quartz? Is there a place for them both in a solution? Spring Batch and Quartz have different goals. Spring Batch provides functionality for processing large volumes of data and Quartz provides functionality for scheduling tasks. So Quartz could complement Spring Batch, but are not excluding technologies. A common combination would be to use Quartz as a trigger for a Spring Batch job using a Cron expression and the Spring Core convenience SchedulerFactoryBean .

• Client-side or server-side processing?

  So, I'm new to dynamic web design (my sites have been mostly static with some PHP), and I'm trying to learn the latest technologies in web development (which seems to be AJAX), and I was wondering, if you're transferring a lot of data, is it better to construct the page on the server and "push" it to the user, or is it better to "pull" the data needed and create the HTML around it on the clientside using JavaScript? More specifically, I'm using CodeIgniter as my PHP framework, and jQuery for JavaScript, and if I wanted to display a table of data to the user (dynamically), would it be better to format the HTML using CodeIgniter (create the tables, add CSS classes to elements, etc..), or would it be better to just serve the raw data using JSON and then build it into a table with jQuery? My intuition says to do it clientside, as it would save bandwidth and the page would probably load quicker with the new JavaScript optimizations all these browsers have now, however, then the site would break for someone not using JavaScript... Many large high traffic .NET sites such as plentyoffish.com, mysapce and SO all use .NET technologies and use SQL SERver for their database. In the article it says SO said As you add more and more database servers the SQL Server license costs can be outrageous. So by starting scale up and gradually going scale out with non-open source software you can be in a world of financial hurt. I don't understand why don't high traffic .NET sites convert their databases to MySQL as it is waay cheaper then SQL Server

  I’m building a WPF application using MVVM pattern (both are new technologies for me). I use user controls for simple bits of reusable functionality that doesn’t contain business logic, and MVVM pattern to build application logic. Suppose a view contains my user control that fires events, and I want to add an event handler to that event. That event handler should be in the view model of the view, because it contains business logic. The question is – view and the view model are connected only by binding; how do I connect an event handler using binding? Is it even possible (I suspect not)? If not – how should I handle events from a control in the view model? Maybe I should use commands or INotifyPropertyChanged?

One of the developers on the project has raised the possibility of switching to MySQL instead of SQL Server in order to save on cost for both the licence of the DB server, as well as the tools to design and manipulate the DB (such as the wonderfully free MySQL Workbench). What are the various pros and cons of using SQL Server vs. MySQL as the database for a complex .Net project? Price is one factor we have identified, both in terms of the DB server licence as well as tools to manipulate the DB, but what other factors come into play?

  I want to have achieve something similar to Java Tiles framework using only client side technologies (no server side includes). I would like to have one page, eg layout.html which will contain layout definition. Content placeholder in that page would be empty #content div tag. I would like to have different content injected on that page based on url. Something like layout.html?content=main or layout.html?content=edit will display page with content replaced with main.html or edit.html. The goal is to avoid duplicating code, even for layout, and to compose pages without server-side templating. What approach would you suggest? EDIT: I don't need a full templating library, just a way to compose a pages, similar for what tiles do.

  To me this sounds like a really stupid question. Why would you not use a build tool? However, I need to explain my co-worker why he should be using a build tool of some sort. He's getting really into the idea of working as a team with more programmers, but he isn't understanding the bigger picture of what needs to change in the build process in order to work with a larger team; (i.e. defensive programming/unit testing your code, having a bug database, programming modular libraries, and using sub-repositories to store modules in version control. This is a rather large stack of technologies that I need to prove the ROI of...so I figured I'd start with the ROI of using a build tool rather than just...say...clicking compile.

• Do you know of a bleeding-edge HTML5 leveraging, legacy-ignoring JavaScript framework?

  I want to broadcast Video from a web cam, over internet. The problem is, the Video will be viewed live by more than 20,000 people (expected). I have a very little experience with Red5 Broadcasting. I did some broadcasting using Red5 and Flash. It works fine for 1 or 2 viewers i.e. it is great for personal chatting/ video conferencing applications. But, when the number of viewers increases, the delay in Broadcasting also increases. I am experiencing a Delay addition of about 0.5 Seconds for every new user who joins the broadcast. Can any one suggest me some, better technologies on which I can work out this Live Broadcasting. I don't want to use http://www.ustream.com; I want to create one of my own, such tool. But thats always the last solution.

  Is it possible to rewrite somehow www.mysite.com/Pictures to point to test.mysite.com/Pictures or even more broadly www.someothersite.com/Pictures ? Note: www.mysite.com and test.mysite.com are on separate machines and built with different technologies (one is ASP.NET and the other is PHP) but I have access to both of them. I want that when I reference a picture like www.mysite.com/Pictures/pic12345.png the picture to display correctly, even though there is not /Pictures folder on that server and the pictures has to be retrieved by going to test.mysite.com/Picture/pic12345.png Ideally I want to do this in IIS6 to test it. However I am interested if it possible to do in any webserver (Apache, IIS7)

• WCF Caching Solution - Need Advice

  The company I work for is looking to implement a caching solution. We have several WCF Web Services hosted and we need to cache certain values that can be persisted and fetched regardless of a client's session to a service. I am looking at the following technologies: Caching Application Block 4.1 WCF TCP Service using HttpRuntime Caching Memcached Win32 and Client Microsoft AppFabric Caching Beta 2 Our test server is a Windows Server 2003 with IIS6, but our production server is Windows Server 2008, so any of the above options would work (except for AppFabric Caching on our test server). Does anyone have any experience with any of these? This caching solution will not be used to store a lot of data, but it will need to be fetched from frequently and fast. Thanks in advance.
