  • How to draw a filled envelop like a cone on OpenGL (using GLUT)?

    Hi, I am relatively new to OpenGL programming...currently involved in a project that uses freeglut for opengl rendering... I need to draw an envelop looking like a cone (2D) that has to be filled with some color and some transparency applied. Is the freeglut toolkit equipped with such an inbuilt functionality to draw filled geometries(or some trick)?? or is there some other api that has an inbuilt support for filled up geometries.. Edit1: just to clarify the 2D cone thing... the envelop is the graphical interpretation of the coverage area of an aircraft during interception(of an enemy aircraft)...that resembles a sector of a circle..i should have mentioned sector instead.. and glutSolidCone doesnot help me as i want to draw a filled sector of a circle...which i have already done...what remains to do is to fill it with some color... how to fill geometries with color in opengl??     Do you agree that the designers of Java class java.io.IOException should have made it an unchecked run-time exception derived from java.lang.RuntimeException instead of a checked exception derived only from java.lang.Exception? I think that class IOException should have been an unchecked exception because there is little that an application can do to resolve problems like file system errors. However, in When You Can't Throw An Exception, Elliotte Rusty Harold claims that most I/O errors are transient and so you can retry an I/O operation several times before giving up: For instance, an IOComparator might not take an I/O error lying down, but — because many I/O problems are transient — you can retry a few times, as shown in Listing 7: Is this generally the case? Can a Java application correct I/O errors or wait for the system to recover? If so, then it is reasonable for IOException to be checked, but if it is not the case, then IOException should be unchecked so that business logic can delegate handling of this exception to a separate system error handler.

    I recently watched a youtube video where a guy got a camera to recognize when a rubik's cube was held up to it, and it captured the 9 square color combination before snapping a picture of the cube and displaying the 3x3 grid on the screen of his computer. What kind of programming is this and where would I start reading to get into this sort of thing? specifically, controlling a camera, and getting it to pick out certain parts of an image and translate that data.

  • std::vector optimisation required

    I've written a routine that uses std::vector<double> rather heavily. It runs rather slowly and AQTime seems to imply that I am constructing mountains of vectors but I'm not sure why I would be. For some context, my sample run iterates 10 times. Each iteration copies 3 c arrays of ~400 points into vectors and creates 3 new same sized vectors for output. Each output point might be the result of summing up to 20 points from 2 of the input vectors, which works out to a worst case of 10*400*3*2*20 = 480,000 dereferences. Incredibly the profiler indicates that some of the std:: methods are being called 46 MILLION times. I suspect I'm doing something wrong!   • Selecting items from events, as evenly spaced as possible

    If I have an event that happens 15 times a second (numbered 1 - 15), but I only want to process it 3 times I can choose [1], [6] and [11],. It's important that the events I process are as evenly spaced as possible and take into account wrap-around, i.e. the events are continuous 13, 14, 15, 1, 2, 3 etc. If I want 4 items the best I can do is [1], [5], [9] & [13]. Is there a general algorithm that will calculate which events I need to process given the total number of events (total) and the number to process (processAmount).

  • Redirect Entry form in SharePoint back to itself once entry submitted?

    The issue I have is that people in my group are using a link to an Entry Form to post new itmes to a SharePoint list. Everytime they click 'submit' to post new item, SharPoint redirects them to the list. I need a solution for SharePoint to direct them to the empty Entry form instead, no matter how many times they need to use it. Is there such solution? Thanks, I already have this "/EntryForm.aspx?Source=http://" in the link to the Entry form, but works only 2 times, after that will direct to the list.

  • Does a C++ destructor always or only sometimes call data member destructors?

    I'm trying to validate my understanding of C++ destructors. I've read many times that C++ supplies a default destructor if I don't write one myself. But does this mean that if I DO write a destructor that the compiler WON'T still provide the default cleanup of stack-allocated class fields? My hunch is that the only sane behavior would be that all class fields are destroyed no matter what, whether I provide my own destructor or not. In which case the statement I've read so many times is actually a little misleading and could be better stated as: "Whether or not you write your own destructor, the C++ compiler always writes a default destructor-like sequence to deallocate the member variables of your class. You may then specify additional deallocations or other tasks as needed by defining your own destructor" Is this correct?

  • Ruby TCPSocket doesn't notice it when server is killed

    I've this ruby code that connects to a TCP server (namely, netcat). It loops 20 times, and sends "ABCD ". If I kill netcat, it takes TWO iterations of the loop for an exception to be triggered. On the first loop after netcat is killed, no exception is triggered, and "send" reports that 5 bytes have been correctly written... Which in the end is not true, since of course the server never received them. Is there a way to work around this issue ?   • Python: Count lines and differentiate between them

    I'm using an application that gives a timed output based on how many times something is done in a minute, and I wish to manually take the output (copy paste) and have my program, and I wish to count how many times each minute it is done. An example output is this: 13:48 An event happened. 13:48 Another event happened. 13:49 A new event happened. 13:49 A random event happened. 13:49 An event happened. So, the program would need to understand that 2 things happened at 13:48, and 3 at 13:49. I'm not sure how the information would be stored, but I need to average them after, to determine an average of how often it happens. Sorry for being so complicated!

  • JButton Image Ignoring GridBagConstraints

    I am working on an application and have a screen that needs to have elements (namely some custom JButtons) appear and disappear based on a user selection. However for some reason, when I add these buttons to their pane, the buttton image goes to the top corner, and leaves the text in the center, completely ignoring GridBagConstraints. I am completely stumped on this one as I have done this same exact thing dozens of times earlier in the program without any issues.   • Programming language for fast calculations with big integers

    I'm doing Project Euler problems at the moment and I can solve most of them using my own programming language which uses direct C++ integers (so they are bound to 2^32 on my machine). However, at times there are problems which require me to work with very high numbers, I can't do that with native integers. So I implemented a BigInt library in my language which unfortunately gets extremely slow at times. Is there a programming language suitable for very efficient handling of big numbers? I mean that I want to do the things I could do in other programming languages with it (variables, loops, etc.), but in a faster way. If you have got tips for workarounds of the 2^32 limit in my language/C++/other languages, please tell me too!

    Hello, I have the following code: NSNumber *number = [NSNumber numberWithInt:5]; int i = [number retainCount]; [number release]; i = [number retainCount]; [number release]; i = [number retainCount]; the problem is that in line 2 , the value of parameter i is 2 and in line 4 the value is 1. then in line 6 the value is still 1.???????? first i dont understand why after init *number the retaincount is 2 and not 1?? second i dont understand why after release it 2 times retaincount is not 0? it doesnt matter how many times i release the object the retaincount stay 1.

  • Decorator Pattern - Multiple wrappers or quantity property?

    I'm making use of the decorator pattern for one of the first times, as part of a Uni project. As far as I can see, the pattern seems to be meant more for adding functionality in a modular manner, however we've been taught it with uses such as a coffee or pizza maker, where the object has modular components that are added - changing properties rather than behaviour. I'm trying to make the most of both uses, however I've come up with a question. In the example in the book we're using (Head First Design Patterns), the pattern is used in a coffee shop creating different coffees. So, for example, milk, froth, sugar, sprinkles are all decorators. How would you implement a system that used the same decorator multiple times (for example, a coffee with two sugars)? Would you rewrap the coffee, or give sugar a quantity property? Or (as i'm starting to suspect) would this never be an issue as the pattern isn't designed to be used this way?

  • Can my app arrange a gdb breakpoint or watch?

    Is there a way for my code to be instrumented to insert a break point or watch on a memory location that will be honored by gdb? (And presumably have no effect when gdb is not attached.) I know how to do such things as gdb commands within the gdb session, but for certain types of debugging it would be really handy to do it "programmatically", if you know what I mean -- for example, the bug only happens with a particular circumstance, not any of the first 11,024 times the crashing routine is called, or the first 43,028,503 times that memory location is modified, so setting a simple break point on the routine or watch point on the variable is not helpful -- it's all false positives. I'm concerned mostly about Linux, but curious about if similar solutions exist for OS X (or Windows, though obviously not with gdb).

    I have a string that contains a value "firstword second third", and an ArrayList. I want to split the whole string in to by spaces and add the splitted strings in to the ArrayList. For example,"firstword second third" can be split to three separate strings and added three times in to the ArrayList. "1 2 3 4" can be splitted in to 4 strings and added 4 times in to the ArrayList. I'm executing the following SQL Query approx 300 times in the program to find route connections from a database of 10,000 bus connections. It takes approx 6-7 seconds to execute the query 300 times. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up or any ideas on a different method i can use ?   • Coldfusion CFC creation taking a variable amout of time to execute.

    I've been doing some logging of object creation times in our open account process in production. Periodically, initializing an object would take way longer than expected. By initializing I mean calling it's init() and passing a couple of arguments that may be simple variables or objects. e.g. <cfset validateObj = createObject("component", "compExample").init( productionMode = VARIABLES.productionMode, ipWhiteListed = isWhiteListed, ipLocatorObj = VARIABLES.ipLocatorObj ) /> Thats all that happens in init() methods. Generally the execution time would be 0ms, but at random times I might get 3 or 3.5 seconds. This is not specific to one particular server or to our generally busy period. It appears to be quite random. One thought was that these templates were being evicted from our template cache as they are not especially frequently used, although I checked cfstat on a number of servers and the max CP/Sec is -1. Running CF 8,0,1 Has anybody else ever come across this?
