Active Directory Corrupted In Windows Small Business Server 2011 - Server No Longer Domain Controller

I have a rather bad problem with my Windows SBS 2011. First of all, I'll give the background to what caused the problem. I was setting up a new small business server network. I had my job about finished. The server was working great, all the workstations had joined the domain, and I had all my applications and data moved to the server. I thought I was done. But then it happened. I tried adding one more computer to the domain, and to my dismay the computer name was set to the same name as the server. Apparently when a computer joins a domain with the same name as another machine that is already on the domain, it overrides the first one. For normal workstations, this is not a big deal, you just delete the computer from AD and rejoin the original computer to the domain. However, for a server that is the domain controller it is a whole different story. Since the server got overridden in AD, it is no longer the domain controller. The DNS service is not working and all kinds of other services are failing also. So the question is, what are my options? I am embarrassed to admit it, but since this is a new server one thing I did not have setup yet was backup. So I have no backups to work from. I am worried that things are broken enough that I might need to do a reinstall. However, I already have several days worth of configuration into this server, so I would obviously prefer if there was a fix that would prevent me from needing to do a reinstall. All the server components are there and installed correctly, but they are misconfigured (I think it is basically just Active Directory). So I have the feeling that if I did the right thing I could solve the issue without a reinstall. Is there anyway to rerun the component that installs the initial configuration to "convert" the base windows server 2008 r2 install into a SBS? In other words in the program files folder there is an application called SBSsetup.exe, is there anyway to rerun this and have it reconfigure AD, etc. to work with SBS? Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

DNS Server (2008 r2) MMC The server DC01 could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied

I've just migrated the AD with the whole nine yards, FSMO, PDC, RID, Schema, etc, from an SBS 2003 to a Win 2008 R2 Std. I have managed to have no error in the dcdiag before I demoted the SBS 2003 from the AD, fsmocheck, conectivity, advertising, dns, etc. The SBS 2003 demoted successfully. After this step I have restarted both, the old SBS and the new Win 2008 r2. After restart the new DC (which is the GC) started with an Access denied to the DNS Server MMC, actually it is looking like I would try to connect to the 2008 r2 DNS server from an older server console I can NOT manage DNS server through MMC nor through dnscmd (Command failed: ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED 5 0x5) I cannot even use the Action Option from the DNS Server MMC because all the options are DISABLED but for "Launch nslookup". I've made a lot of research on the internet but no luck, yet. So I come to ask for help. Thank you very much.

Windows 8, Truecrypt drive mounts but Windows cannot read its content

I installed Windows 8 and when I started it, it said that it was repairing a disk. The disk was an encrypted Truecrypt disk. I couldn't mount the disk in Truecrypt after that. I tried to repair the header and it worked, now I can mount the disk but neither Windows 7 or 8 can read the content. Windows asks if it should format the disk. I have all the important files on backup, but there are some media files that I would like to get back. Any ideas?

How do you monitor the health of a mirrored disk in Windows?

I have a Mirrored Dynamic disk on my Windows 2003 Server. How do you monitor the health of the volume? Is there a way to have the server send an email when there is an issue with the volume? Is there a way to have the server run S.M.A.R.T. tests? EDIT: Nothing says WTF like logging into a client server, running DISKPART LIST VOLUME and seeing this. Mount a network drive when windows starts up without being logged in.

Current Scenario: I have a NAS Box, and a Windows 2003 Server that our recording software is on (Security Cameras). The software stores the data on the NAS box. Currently someone has to be logged in with valid credentials in order to keep the drive mounted (e.g. domain admin). I know you can mount the drive with a batch file, but this stores credentials in clear text and is not a good solution. I am looking for another way to get the drive to mount on startup without someone having to be logged in. I do have a generic account setup that has access to read/write to the drive but can't log-in interactively, this is the account I would like to use to mount it if any. Any suggestions?

Windows Server 2008 R2 Firewall - Interface specific rules

I'm trying to define per interface rules, much like it was in Server 2003. We will be replacing our old 2003 server with a new 2008 R2 server. The server runs IIS and SQL Server. It's a dedicated server at the hosting company. We use a OpenVPN connection from the office to access SQL server, RDesktop, FTP and other administrative services. Only http and ssh is listening on the public interface. On the old server running 2003, I was able to define global rules for http and ssh, and allow other services only on the vpn interface. I can't find a way to do the same on 2008 R2. I understand that there is the Network Location Awareness service, firewall rules are applied according to the current network location. But I don't understand the purpose of this on a server. The only close solution I found is to set the scope on the firewall rule and restrict remote ip addresses to the private subnet of the office. But the ports will still be listening on the public interface. So how can I restrict a firewall rule to the connections coming from the vpn interface ? A note on this page states that scoping a rule to an interface does not exist anymore: In earlier versions of Windows, many of these command accepted a parameter called interface. This parameter is not supported in the firewall context in Windows Vista or later versions of Windows. I can't believe that they simply decided to remove a core firewall functionality that every firewall has. There must be a way to restrict a rule to an interface. Any ideas ? I'm still unable to find an adequate solution to my problem. So for now, my workaround is this: Administrative services listen on VPN IP address Firewall rules restrict the scope to the local IP address of VPN Public services listen on all interfaces, no scope restriction on firewall rules This is not optimal, if I change the IP address of the VPN, I need to edit the firewall rules too. It won't be the case if the rules were bound to the interface.

I've tried adding the FQDN to the intranet list with no prevail and I'm starting to go crazy. I've also turned off IE Enhanced Security Configuration for both Admins and Users. windows VPS running apache and mysql, php scripts running slow.. but cpu usage is 1-3%..

So every night I run some cron jobs. It requires probably about 20 min to process all the records. I gather the script does something like 10,000 sql queries. I figure this task was just that intense and needs time to complete, but I looked at CPU and memory usage, and it is super low. Cpu usage is between 1-3% and once in a while will bounce to 50ish for 2-3 seconds. This VPS is running windows 2003 server with Apache and MySQL. Does this sound right?

Can the utility "Installation Monitor" from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools for administrative tasks be used on newer OS's, specifically, Windows Server 2008 R2. The main thing I am concerned about is it may error will not track things correctly without letting me know that that it errored due to how Windows has changed between 2000 and today. If that is not the correct tool to use to monitor what a application is writing to the hard drive and registry, can you recommend me what I should use instead?

Service or software to auto-sync one server to another so they are identical?

We have a main node in a DC data center and want to setup a back-up node in Seattle. The back-up node will only be used if the DC node goes down and we switch it over while DC node is repaired. The question is, what kind of services out there allow me to sync the data, I suppose we want to do it fairly frequently so if something goes down there isn't much loss in data between the time of failure and the last back-up/sync. Is there any common solution for this? It's Windows Server 2003 running Parallels Virtuozzo.

Windows 7- New Windows Are Not Displayed

I am running an up-to-date and OEM version of Windows 7. I have been experiencing an annoying problem for the past few weeks where new windows are not displayed 70-80% of the time. For example, when I launch notepad, the notepad window is not displayed or when I select save from the file menu, the save dialog is not displayed. The window is there, but it is not being displayed; the screen is not refreshed. The way to work around this problem is to force a system-wide refresh by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL and then cancelling hiding all windows using "show desktop" then displaying the window needed via taskbar Can anyone please point me in the right direction to solving this problem? What could be causing this?

Internal Outlook clients prompted for OWA login when only accessing local internal Exchange server?

Hope someone can help with this one. Scenario is an internal Exchange 2003 server. OWA front end server in the DMZ. OWA logins work fine, with SSL configured. Over the last week (3 times so far) when an internal person opens their Outlook and then tries to open an email with JPG attachments they are prompted for the webmail login. Why? Even if they enter their valid webmail OWA login it fails and reprompts once for each attachment. Once they get through the multiple login prompts, they can double-click to open the attachments, but they are all blank. Any ideas on what could cause this? Why would someone accessing an email from an internal Outlook client get prompted for details of the OWA/webmail server login?

How do I set Windows 7 as default OS but retain Windows 8 Boot screen?

I am dual-booting between Windows 7 and Windows 8 on a test workstation, and typically reboot 3-4 times per day. If I set Windows 8 as the default OS, I get the Windows 8 graphical boot screen, which is easy to 'see' during the boot process, but if I set Windows 7 as the default OS, I only get the Windows 7 text-mode boot screen. While I mostly want Windows 7 (at the moment), on the occasions I restart to get to Windows 8, I often 'miss' seeing the text-only boot and have to restart twice. Is it possible to (and if so, how do I) configure this such that Windows 7 is the default OS, but still having the Windows 8 boot screen appear? Edit: Just so you guys know, I've tried setting Windows 7 as the default both from the Windows 8 Boot screen itself, and from within Windows 8 -- neither of these have the desired effect.

Error page for OWA users on a different server?

We are getting ready to do a network-wide upgrade to Exchange 2010. The url for the old 2007 mailboxes is at https://mail.example.com and users who have had their mail box moved will have to go to https://Email.example.com If a user that has a 2010 mailbox attempts to login at the 2007 OWA location, they get a standard 403 Forbidden page. We would like to show them a page of our own making, that includes a link to the 2010 OWA login page. I assumed we could do this with an IIS Custom Error page, but setting the 403.4 error page in IIS on the Default web site doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know how we could get around this? BTW, our OWA for the 2007 boxes in on Windows Server 2003, and IIS 6

Windows, Apache and MSSQL Authentication

I have a create database script written in perl. I remember it working just fine another machine. A couple years later using a Vista machine I am trying to use it again and it keeps failing. The main difference is that now I am using Apache instead of IIS. In the script the IUSR account is granted permissions as it needs to write to the database as a part of another program. IIS has been uninstalled on this machine but the IUSR account still exists. The NT AUTHORITY\IUSR is also seen in the logins drop down in MSSQL(2012). The machine is running Vista Home Edition. However when running the script I get errors that say that NT AUTHORITY\IUSR cannot be found. I tried also with COMPUTERNAME\IUSR just for the heck of it and of course it was not found. I also tried with IUSR alone and for some reason the user isn't being "found"? Any ideas?

Atm I'm going to run a single virtual machine, with following tasks: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 File/Print SQL Server My question is ... with my 8 disks in the server, which disks should contain wich data? Should I install "Hyper-V R2" and VM's drive c on same physical disks? Should I use raid 1 or 5? With the above tasks, how would you structure the disks? New version of SQL Server Data Tools is now available

If you don’t follow the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) blog then you may not know that two days ago an updated version of SSDT was released (and by SSDT I mean the database projects, not the SSIS/SSRS/SSAS stuff) along with a new version of the SSDT Power Tools. This release incorporates a an updated version of the SQL Server Data Tier Application Framework (aka DAC Framework, aka DacFX) which you can read about on Adam Mahood’s blog post SQL Server Data-Tier Application Framework (September 2012) Available. DacFX is essentially all the gubbins that you need to extract and publish .dacpacs and according to Adam’s post it incorporates a new feature that I think is very interesting indeed: Extract DACPAC with data – Creates a database snapshot file (.dacpac) from a live SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database that contains data from user tables in addition to the database schema. These packages can be published to a new or existing SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database using the SqlPackage.exe Publish action. Data contained in package replaces the existing data in the target database. In short, .dacpacs can now include data as well as schema. I’m very excited about this because one of my long-standing complaints about SSDT (and its many forebears) is that whilst it has great support for declarative development of schema it does not provide anything similar for data – if you want to deploy data from your SSDT projects then you have to write Post-Deployment MERGE scripts. This new feature for .dacpacs does not change that situation yet however it is a very important pre-requisite so I am hoping that a feature to provide declaration of data (in addition to declaration of schema which we have today) is going to light up in SSDT in the not too distant future. SQL SERVER – Cardinality Estimation and Performance – SQL in Sixty Seconds #072

Yesterday I wrote blog post based on my latest Pluralsight course on learning SQL Server 2014. I discussed newly introduced cardinality estimation in SQL Server 2014 and how it improves the performance of the query. The cardinality estimation logic is responsible for quality of query plans and majorly responsible for improving performance for any query. This logic was not updated for quite a while, but in the latest version of SQL Server 2104 this logic is re-designed. The new logic now incorporates various assumptions and algorithms of OLTP and warehousing workload. I hope my earlier blog post clearly explained how new cardinality estimation logic improves performance. no mails routed to/from new Exchange 2010

I have an Exchange Server 2003 up and running for years. Now I am in the mid of transition to Exchange Server 2010, I already installed it, put the latest Servicepack on it and everything seems fine, BUT: Mails do not get delivered to MailBoxes on the new Exchange 2010. e.g. when I create a new mailbox on the old server, Emails in and out to/from it work like a charm. But as soon as I move it to the new server, emails get stuck. Noe delivered from outside or old mailboxes, not send out from the new server to enywhere. Sending between Mailboxes on the new Server of course is working. I can see the connectors between old and new Server in the Exchange 2003 Admin Tool, but I cannot find these nowhere on the new server. I have also setup sending connectors at the new server to send out mails directly, but that does not work. In all other areas, the servers are perfectly working together - moving mailboxes between, seeing each other etc. "just" they dont exchange (!) any emails - Any ideas what I missed? I also followed the hints from: Upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, routing works in one direction only There Emails were transported at least in one direction, in my case they are not transported at all. Both my connectors are up and valid abd have the correct source/target shown on Get-RoutingGroupConnector | FL Kind regards Michael

Allow incoming connections on Windows Server 2008 R2

Good day people. First, im new to Windows Server. I've always used Linux/Apache combo, but, my client has and AWS EC2 Windows Server 2008 R2 instance and he wants everything in there. Im working with IIS and PHP enabled as Fast-CGI and everything is working, but, i cant see the websites stored in it from internet. The public DNS that AWS gave us for that instance is: http://ec2-XX-XXX-XXX-121.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/ But, if i copy paste that address, i get nothing, no IIS logo or something like that. My common sense tells me that maybe the firewall could be blocking the access. Can anyone help me and tell where to enable some rules to get this thing working? I don't wanna start enabling rules at random and make the system insecure. If you need any additional info, you can ask me and i will provide it. Thanks in advance. UPDATE: Amazon EC2 display this: Public DNS: ec2-XX-XXX-XXX-121.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com Private DNS: ip-XX-XXX-XX-252.us-west-2.compute.internal Private IPs: XX.XXX.XX.25 In my test microinstance, i just to use the Public DNS address (the one that starts with "ec2") and it works like a charm (of course, the micro instance have its own Public DNS im not assuming same address for both instances...) However, for the large instance, i tried to do the same. Set up everything as in the micro instance but if i use the Public DNS, it doesnt load anything. Im suspicious about the Windows Firewall, but, the HTTP related stuff is enabled. What should i do to get access to the large instance? I don't want to set up the domain yet, i want access from an amazon url. 2ND EDIT: all fixed. Charles pointed that maybe Security Groups was not properly set up for the instance. He was right. Just added HTTP service to the rules and all works good.

Clipboard bug in Wordpad in Windows 7 (accidentally pasting large file into application)

In Win7, I use Wordpad, and I really like it. For my needs it's lean and fast, yet has the formatting functionalities I'm after when working on my TXT/RTF files on a daily basis. I don't intend to change text editors. There's a really bad bug which has ALWAYS plagued me. If you have a large file contained in the clipboard, like a 238MB FLAC file, and you accidentally paste it into Wordpad for whatever reason - it hangs the application for a VERY long time (like 2 hours, it depends on how big the file is, because it tries to 'handle' it). You either have to close the application and lose any unsaved changes, or go do something else until the item has finished pasting into Wordpad (it actually eventually drops the file's icon in wordpad just like how it appears in Windows Explorer). It's a Windows bug, a Wordpad bug. Is there some solution for this? Or is the problem fixed in Windows 8 (if anyone can tell me)? .....I'm not going to try out Win8 myself, merely to answer this question - that's what I'm asking it on SuperUSer for! I'm really hoping it's one of those little-yet-big things that they've fixed in Win8 (like removing the 255-character file path limit in Explorer, which is awesome). Thank you for your help, if you have Win8 handy and can test this. :)
