• Can't seem to install imagick

  I'm trying to install the PHP PEAR PECL extension "imagick" (image magick), but failing horribly. It seems that I keed installing packages to progress, but this one has me stumped.   A few days ago someone showed me a pricing guide from a Linux vendor and I was a bit surprised at the complexity of it. Especially when you look at larger servers (4 or 8 sockets) and when adding virtual machine use into the mix. I think we have a very compelling and simple pricing model for both Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. Let me see if I can explain it in 1 page, not 10 pages. This pricing information is publicly available on the Oracle store, I am using the current public list prices. Also keep in mind that this is for customers using non-oracle x86 servers.   [I originally posted on SO but it earned me a Tumbleweed badge. This looks like a better venue for the question.] I have Apache (XAMPP 1.8.0) running on Vista Pro x64. A couple times now I have seen a pattern like the example below in access.log. Concerning is the "attack" seems to somehow shift from a public IP to a valid private IP on my network (happens to be the WAN address of one of my routers). Two questions: How is this possible, and what happens if the "attacker" stumbles on a valid request? • Moodle 2 pages loading up to 2000% faster

  On average our Moodle 2 pages were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, so that’s like 2333.333% faster!What was it I hear you say?Well it was the database connection, or more correctly the database library. I was using FreeTDS http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_MSSQL_for_PHP, but now I’m using the new Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098. I’m in a Windows Server IT department, and in both our live and development environments, we have Moodle 2.2.3, IIS 7.5, and PHP 5.3.10 running on two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers and using MS Network Load Balancing.Since moving to Moodle 2, the pages have always loaded much more slowly than they did in Moodle 1.9, I’ve been chasing this issue for quite a while. I had previously tried the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0, but my testing showed it was slower than the FreeTDS driver.Then yesterday I found Microsoft had released the new version, Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server, so I thought I’d give it a run, and wow what a difference it made.Pages that were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, 2333.333% faster…I have more testing to do, but so far it’s looking good, I have scheduled multi user load testing for early next week (fingers crossed).To make the change all I need to do was,download the driverscopy the relevant files to PHP\ext (for us they were php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll) install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client x64 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29065 add to PHP.ini, extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll, extension=php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dllremove form PHP.ini, extension=php_dblib.dllvchange in PHP.ini, mssql.textlimit = 20971520 and mssql.textsize = 20971520change Moodle config.php, $CFG->dbtype = 'sqlsrv'; and 'dbpersist' => Trueand then reboot and test…I've browsed courses, backed up/restored some really large and complicated courses, deleted courses etc. etc. all good.Still more testing to do but, hey this is good start...Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same slowness…

• Should I go with Java or Python for my next project, after using PHP for 5 years? [closed]

  I have a full-time PHP job and I've been working with PHP for 5 years. I'm not willing to stay within this technology stack any more. I also worked with Java for 2 year before, so for me it looks more obvious to switch back to Java. However during last 5 years I was thinking about starting my own project, and now I think I have a very good SAAS idea. I'm completely confused what technology should I use for my project. I don't want to do it in PHP, and after reading many articles about rapid prototype development it seems to me that Django is the best option. I will continue to work full time for my current employer because I need to pay my bills and will work on my project in my free time. The concern I have is should I do my project in Java or Python? To be realistic there is always a risk when you are doing your own project/start-up. If I do it in Java in the worst case scenario I believe I will be able to find a full time Java position because I already have some experience in Java + recent experience in my project. With regards to Python it looks like it is not very popular in my area and salaries are much more lower then for Java. On the other hand I have a feeling that if I chose Java it will take me a way longer to finish my project. Guys I'm completely confused and I need your advice. P.S. I have moved to London 2 years ago from another country, local guys are very welcome to share their thoughts about London's job market.

I do not understand how proxy_read_timeout could affect connection at so early stage (before accept). I would expect 200 here. Please explain! proxy_send_timeout - I am not sure if my approach to test proxy_send_timeout is correct - i think i still do not understand this parameter correctly. After all, delay between accept and read does not force proxy_send_timeout. proxy_read_timeout - it seems to be pretty straightforward. Setting delay between read and write does the job. So I guess my assumptions are wrong and probably I do not understand proxy_connect and proxy_send timeouts properly. Can some explain them to me using above test if possible (or modifying if required).

  Hello, I'm designing event loop for asynchronous socket IO using epoll/devpoll/kqueue/poll/select (including windows-select). I have two options of performing, IO operation: Non-blocking mode, poll on EAGAIN Set socket to non-blocking mode. Read/Write to socket. If operation succeeds, post completion notification to event loop. If I get EAGAIN, add socket to "select list" and poll socket. Polling mode: poll and then execute Add socket to select list and poll it. Wait for notification that it is readable writable read/write Post completion notification to event loop of sucseeds To me it looks like first would require less system calls when using in normal mode, especially for writing to socket (buffers are quite big). Also it looks like that it would be possible to reduce the overhead over number of "select" executions, especially it is nice when you do not have something that scales well as epoll/devpoll/kqueue. Questions: Are there any advantages of the second approach? Are there any portability issues with non-blocking operations on sockets/file descriptors over numerous operating systems: Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, MacOSX, Windows. Notes: Please do not suggest using existing event-loop/socket-api implementations

And in this function(T) i need to call a function from the Timerr Class.But the problem is its always NULL , although the constructor is called in Process. And e.g. the Random Class can be called, i guess its because its defined with the constructor.: public Random Random = new Random(); and thats why the other classes(without a constructor): public Timerr Timers; public Test Test; are always null in the inherited class Test.But its essentiel that i call other Methods of other classes in this function.How could i solve that?

  I have a socket server that I am trying to move over to SSL on python 2.5, but I've run into a snag with pyOpenSSL. I can't find any good tutorials on using it, so I'm operating largely on guesses. BONUS When I do get this working correctly, is the ENTIRE CLASS passed with the serialized object (i.e. will I have access to the methods of the object's class)? My reading suggests that the entire class is passed with the object, but I have been unable to use the objects methods thus far. How exactly do I call on the object's methods? In addition to my code above I also experimented with the readObject method, but I was probably using it wrong too because I couldn't get it to work. Please enlighten me.

• Actionscript flex sockets and telnet

  I am trying to make a flex application where it gets data from a telnet connection and I am running into a weird problem. To give a brief introduction, i want to read data from a process that exposes it through a socket. So if in the shell i type telnet localhost 8651i receive the xml and then the connection is closed (I get the following Connection closed by foreign host.) Anyway i found a simple tutorial online for flex that essentially is a telnet client and one would expect it to work but everything follows Murphy's laws and nothing ever works! Now i have messages being printed in every event handler and all places that i can think off. When i connect to the socket nothing happens, no event handler is triggered even the connect or close handler and if i do the following the socket.connected returns false! I get no errors, try catch raises no exception. I am at a loss as to whats going wrong? socket.connect(serverURL, portNumber); msg(socket.connected.toString()); Is there something about telnet that i do not know and its causing this to not work. Whats more interesting is why none of the events get fired. Another interesting thing is that i have some python code that does the same thing and its able to get the xml back! The following is the python code that works! def getStats(host, port): sock = socket.socket() sock.connect((host, port)) res = sock.recv(1024*1024*1024, socket.MSG_WAITALL) sock.close() return statFunc(res) So i ask you whats going wrong!!!!!! Is there some inherent problem with how flex handles sockets?
