• NO-SQL reliable for small bussines app?

  I'm deciding between go for a NON-SQL engine or a regular SQL one for a document managment system for small bussines. I have experience with firebird/sql server and found a good track of reliability (specially with firebird). This market is full of crappy "servers" (clon-made PC, the mayority), cheap harddisk, rarely use of RAID or anything like that, some are in locations where a power-off is normal, some not have a UPS, etc... (I will include off-site auto-backup to external servers, but that no change the internal setup). (I know about end-user education about such proper setups, but is stupid depend on that, so stick to te point) From the desing point of view, a schema-less database is the way to go for my system, but, I worry if any of the actual solutions (MongoDb, Tokyo Cabinet, etc) are like firebird and survice crash, malfunctions & abuse so data corruption is very rare. The plan is store the office documents there & provide a central repository.

• Javascript top variable in IE8

  I am trying to reference a javascript function in a .js file loaded in my main page from an iframe using the 'top' variable. It works in FF, Safari, and IE6 but not in IE8. The snippet is (assigned to onmouseover): top.set_image(this, 'images/login_h.png') Where set_image is my function. The error is "Object does not support this function" Also, I have been looking for the definition of top. I can't find it in the ECMAScript specification or the w3schools site and Google is unhelpful (who'da thunk top was a common word?).

• Database Network Latency

  Hi All, I am currently working on an n-tier system and battling some database performance issues. One area we have been investigating is the latency between the database server and the application server. In our test environment the average ping times between the two boxes is in the region of 0.2ms however on the clients site its more in the region of 8.2 ms. Is that somthing we should be worried about? For your average system what do you guys consider a resonable latency and how would you go about testing/measuring the latency? Karl

  Hi All, I really would like to know how i can set my application 'Cognos8' as startpage when just typing the host name of the server. When i now type my hostname 'http://myhost' i get the iistart.htm page instead i would like to be able to get 'http://myhost/Cognos8'. tried http redirect to redirect myhost to myhost/cognos8 which ends in a loop. i tried to set the physical path of default web site to the physical path of my Cognos8 application but also this does not seem to work. i know this should not to hard. Can someone please point i in the right direction? Thanks, Jeroen

• NHibernate handling mutliple resultsets from a sp call

  I'm using a stored procedure to handle search on my site, it includes full text searching, relevance and paging. I also wanted it to return the total number of results that would have been returned, had paging not being there. So I've now got my SP returning 2 select statements, the search and just SELECT @totalResults. Is there any way I can get NHibernate to handle this? I'm currently accessing the ISession's connection, creating a command and executing the SP myself, and mapping the results. This isn't ideal, so I'm hoping I can get NH to handle this for me. Or if anyone has any other better ways of creating complicated searches etc with NH, I'd really like to hear it.

• Django BigInteger auto-increment field as primary key?

  Hi all, I'm currently building a project which involves a lot of collective intelligence. Every user visiting the web site gets created a unique profile and their data is later used to calculate best matches for themselves and other users. By default, Django creates an INT(11) id field to handle models primary keys. I'm concerned with this being overflown very quickly (i.e. ~2.4b devices visiting the page without prior cookie set up). How can I change it to be represented as BIGINT in MySQL and long() inside Django itself? I've found I could do the following (http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/models/fields/#bigintegerfield): class MyProfile(models.Model): id = BigIntegerField(primary_key=True) But is there a way to make it autoincrement, like usual id fields? Additionally, can I make it unsigned so that I get more space to fill in? Thanks!

  Hi, I know its unlikely but I was wondering if there is any way to get the comments (i.e. the bits after the ''') of a class or property..? I have managed to get a list of properties of a class using the PropertyInfo class but I cant find a way to get the comments / description.. I need it for a guide I am writing for the administrators of my site - it would be great if it could automatically update if new properties are added, so there is no need to worry about updating it in the future too much.   I'm launching a new site soon and would like to use one nice font (for headings etc). I've experimented with scripts like cufon and find them very disappointing. The way I see it I have to legal options: create my own font stacks using fonts that are licensed for @font-face (like fontsquirrel) subscribe to typekit use standard font stacks including some of MS Office's nicer fonts (not keen on!) I'm looking for comments from someone with experience here, not speculation please (i can do that myself!). Has anyone used typekit? Have you noticed any performance issues?

I don't know why there is this limitation as the comments are very useful. Imagine if there was a limit of 60 characters for your programs. I wrote about this on my site and have some snapshots to the phpMyAdmin and Dbforge MySQL IDEs: http://mysql.tutorialref.com/mysql-table-comment-length-limit.html Is there a way to change this in phpMyAdmin or perhaps even on the CLI?   A friend of mine has created a movie for my site, it's in .flv format. I've heard of the popular flash player called flowplayer, but I have a bad feeling such a player will not work on the ipad and other devices which do not support flash. Is there a way to play a video in the flash format through a non-flash player so that the content can be viewed on all devices? I'm open to any ideas. Perhaps I may even need to convert the video to another format somehow. Thanks for any help, Evan

  We are considering migrating our site from flash to silverlight, and also building additional components in silverlight. However there is a strong argument that many people do not have silverlight on their computers, and will not or cannot install silverlight. Are there any official figures on how many computers have adopted silverlight, and is it a bad idea to build a company website with elements of silverlight on it? Please note I am not trying to be subjective here, I am looking for solid, official figures and also advice about whether this is considered in general by developers to be an acceptable deployment solution. I have to discuss this issue with my boss later.

And if Linq-to-Entities query nests Linq-to-Objects query, then this nested query also gets translated into an expression tree. a) I assume none of the operators of the nested Linq-to-Objects query actually get executed, but instead data provider for particular DB (or perhaps Object Services) knows how to transform the logic of Linq-to-Objects operators into appropriate SQL statements? b) Data provider knows how to create equivalent SQL statements only for some of the Linq-to-Objects operators? c) Similarly, data provider knows how to create equivalent SQL statements only for some of the non-Linq methods in the Net Framework class library? EDIT: I know only some Sql so I can't be completely sure, but reading Sql query generated for the above code it seems data provider didn't actually execute numbers.Max method, but instead just somehow figured out that numbers.Max should return the maximum value and then proceed to include in generated Sql query a call to TSQL's build-in MAX function. It also put all the values held by numbers array into a Sql query. I'm using Windows 7. The currently installed software is Geoserver from Opengeo suite.   I'm doing a Facebook Connect integration for a site and when the user logs in, I need to ask for some permissions so I use FB.Connect.showPermissionDialog. I use its callback to see if permissions were granted. If they are granted, I want to submit the form. Here's what my code looks like: $("#form3").live("submit", function() { FB.Connect.showPermissionDialog('email, offline_access', function(perms) { if (!perms) { location.href="http://www.mysite.com/logout/"; return false; } else { save_session(); } }); }); The problem is that the form submits before the user can even see the permission dialog.   Hey all - I have to design and implement a Fortran routine to determine the size of clusters on a square lattice, and it seemed extremely convenient to code the subroutine recursively. However, whenever my lattice size grows beyond a certain value (around 200/side), the subroutine consistently segfaults.   In java I need to read a binary file from a site and write it to a disk file. This example http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/urls/readingURL.html could read webpages succesfully, but when I try to read a binary file from my localhost server and write it to a disk file the contents change, corrupting the binary file. Using fc I see that 0x90 is changed to 0x3F and other changes. How do I acess the binary files (read url and write to file) without java or anything else changing ANY characters, like doing any newline conversions or character conversions or anything else, simply reading input url and writing it out as a file.

• magento - multiple tax rates

  I've built a magento site for a Canadian company where each state has a Retail sales tax and a federal tax rate and these rates differ! So, I set up the rates, and the Tax is being calculated correctly, ie the sum of the two tax rates is being calculated correctly. however on selecting the breakdown of tax mode in the admin panel, it would appear that there is something wrong with my setup. Eg. Subtotal $129.99 GST/HST Quebec (5%) $ 16.25 Provincial Sales Tax Quebec (7.5%) Tax $ 16.25 Grand Total $158.23 16.25 is 12% of $129.99 so the tax figure is correct. However it should be displaying as follows: Subtotal $129.99 GST/HST Quebec (5%) $ 6.50 Provincial Sales Tax Quebec (7.5%) $ 9.75 Tax $ 16.25 Grand Total $158.23 Anyone come across this before?   The MVC 2.0 RTM works great on my old Vista machine with VWD 2008 Express, but I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 Pro, installed VWD 2008 Express SP1 and MVC 2.0 RTM by using Web PI 2.0. but after installation, I found the VWD doesn't have any MVC options, that means I can't either create new MVC projects or compile existing MVC projects. Why? What other steps I need to do to make it work? I'm sure the MVC has been installed properly since my MVC site on the new computer works well (so the IIS side has no problem), just the VWD can't 'realize' that the MVC framework is already installed... (tried to uninstall and install many times, but won't work)

• InfoPath Repeating Group with Data from SharePoint and User Input

  I have a series of questions which are pulled from a SharePoint list and loaded into a repeating section. The section has three elements, the Question # (from SharePoint), and Question itself (from SharePoint), and a drop down box Yes/No (NOT from SharePoint)... The repeating group portion works just fine, it is pulling all Question # and Questions from the SharePoint site, but I cannot bind the drop down box (yes/no) to any sort of local data source in order to record the information. Essentially what I have is a dynamically generated form which pulls questions off a SharePoint and a user will answer Yes or No for each question. I cannot associate the Yes/No drop down with anything because it resides within a Repeating section... Thanks for any help!

We have followed the instructions on the following site: http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/DjangoOnWindowsWithIISAndSQLServer We are receiving a 403 error when trying to access our Django application via the IIS server. We have verified the python installation on IIS6 and it is working properly. We have also verified the Django installation. Our application runs fine under the built-in Django server, but we are having difficulties getting it to run under IIS. We presume we could be getting errors from "Linking Django to PyISAPIe" section of the instructions provided on the link above. Thanks.
