Since browsers have a culture setting that the web app uses to decide which locale to use, should I still have a "language" button for users to be able to override the culture? To me it doesn't make sense to have a button there if the user had already set their language in their system.

I have the following structure: assets:(Where my xml file is) src(same level as assets) com msi androidrss(The calling java file is in here) I tried several variations of this: InputSource is = new InputSource("file://../../../../assets/Rss.xml"); But I always get a FNF Exception Any suggestions?     From the perspective of an end user, what makes a software great rather than just good or functional? What are some fundamental principles that can shift the way a software is used and perceived? What are some of the little finishing touches that help put an application over the top? I'm in the later stages of developing a web app and I'm looking for ideas or concepts that I may have missed. If you have specific examples of software or apps that you absolutely love, please share the reasons or features that make it special. Keep in mind that I'm looking for examples that directly affect the end user, but not necessarily just UI suggestions. Here are some of the principles and little touches I'm trying to use: Keep the UI as simple as possible. Remove absolutely everything that isn't necessary. Use progressive disclosure when more information can be needed sometimes but isn't needed all the time. Provide inline help and useful error messages. Verbs on buttons wherever possible. Make anything that's clickable obvious. Fast, responsive UI. Accessibility (this is a work in progress). Reusable UI patterns. Once a user learns a skill, they will be able to use it in multiple places. Intelligent default settings. Auto-focusing forms when filling out the form is the primary action to be taken on the page. Clear metaphors (like tabs) and headings indicating location within the app. Automating repetitive tasks (with the ability to disable the automation). Use standardized or accepted metaphors for icons (like an "x" for delete). Larger text sizes for improved readability. High contrast so that each section is distinct. Making sure that it's obvious on every page what the user is supposed to do by establishing a clear information hierarchy and drawing the eye to the call to action. Most deletions can be undone. Discoverability - Make it easy to learn how to do new tasks. Group similar elements together.

  • Is it reasonable to use OpenGL for desktop applications?

    I've been writing a small desktop gadget-type application that displays scrolling text along the bottom of the screen (Similar to the old CNN news ticker), however the performance of GDI is just unsatisfactory (As high as 8-12% on a quad core and 20% on a single core) even after I've attempted to clean out bottlenecks. I was considering using OpenGL instead to render everything, but I don't know if that is a reasonable option to require users to have hardware acceleration for a tiny app like this. Does anybody have any input on this?

  • Google Chrome Application Mode: Possible to isolate multiple instances?

    I want to run multiple Google Chrome application windows logged into the same web site (Twitter.com, say), each with different credentials. Is this possible? If so, how? My initial testing shows that multiple Chrome app windows are not sufficiently isolated to do this. Logging into the second account logs me into the second account in both windows, suggesting that they are sharing information just as two Chrome tabs might.

I rebuilt everything and deleted the sockets in /var/run and the launchdaemon and privelegedhelpertools folders. But the prompt just won't change!!! Help?

  • Creating custom taskbar icon in Flex application

    I'm trying to create custom icons for my taskbar/desktop icons in my Flex WindowedApplication. So far, I've edited my -app.xml file to include the following: icons/t_16.png icons/t_32.png icons/t_48.png icons/t_128.png When the application is run, however, the default flex/air icon is still showing. I have my systemChrome set to standard, and transparent to false, not that they have any relevance to this. Any ideas?

    I just want to clear this up once and for all, is it ok to subclass a UIWebView? Will I ever have to be nervous about apple rejecting the app because of a UIWebView subclass? The documentation states: Subclassing Notes The UIWebView class should not be subclassed.     Hello, I'm testing my App and in a very simple view, each time a tap on a UITableView row, my allocation overall bytes get higher and higher and never go downs. I don't have any special code there, so I created a new project from scratch with a very simple view, force one section and just three rows. In the didSelectRowAtIndexPath code do nothing, and fire it with instruments and memory allocation and, the memory goes up with every cell selection ...   • Are there any solutions for translating measurement units on Rails?

    I'd like to implement measurement unit preferences in a Ruby on Rails app. For instance, the user should be able to select between displaying distances in miles or in kilometers. And, obviously, not only displaying, but entering values, too. I suppose all values should be stored in one global measurement system to simplify calculations. Are there any drop-in solutions for this? Or should I maybe write my own?
