CSS Style Element if it does not contain another specific type of Element [migrated]

My CSS includes the following: #mainbody a[href ^='http'] { background:transparent url('/images/icons/external.svg') no-repeat top right; padding-right: 12px; } This places an "external" icon next to links that start with "http" (all internal site links are relative). Works perfectly except if I link an Image, it also get this icon. For example: <a href='http://example.com'><img src='whatever.jpg'/></a> would also get the "external" icon next to the image. I can live with this if necessary, but would like to eliminate it. This must be implement in CSS (no JS); must not require any special IDs, Classes, styling in the html for the image or anchor around the image. Is this possible?

Use alpha or opacity on a table row using CSS [migrated]

I have a CSS stylesheet for a webpage. The webpage has a table with a background color of white (set in the rows, not the table). I would like to set the opacity or alpha to 50%. I have tried so many variations, but come up with no luck. A typical row in the HTML file is: <tr> <td> </td> <td>Twitter</td> </tr> The CSS settings for table rows (which works perfectly) is: tr { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background:rgb(255,255,255); } To get the alpha, I tried tr { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color:rgba(255,255,255,0.5); } I have also tried background-color-opacity: 0.5; Any other suggestions?

Should I work on CSS or apps first?

I am working on my own website for my business, and I need to contract out some assistance. For example, I have the site looking pretty good on Firefox, but it needs help on other browsers. I also need some help with adding some Django apps to the site and setting up a database. I plan to seek the help of two different individuals via elance or odesk. My question is which to do first - get the css and html right then do the apps, or get the apps done and then work on the css and html? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

css equivalent of table-row [closed]

I am trying to shift my style away from using tables to control formatting, but I haven't seen a simple css solution that does exactly the same thing as <table><tr><td>aribitrary-html-A</td><td>aribitrary-html-A</td></tr><table> All I want is to make sure aribitrary-html-A and aribitrary-html-B are aligned horizontally. I have tried various CSS concoctions using display: inline, clear: none, and float: left but they all have unwanted side-effects of moving my content around, while the table-tr solution just does what I want, regardless of what's in the arbitrary HTML, and regardless of what is in HTML that contains my table. Am I missing something?

I have a div : <div id="fancyboxID-1"> <p>0767380042</p> </div> and this css: ? #fancyboxID-1 p { font-size:150px; text-align: center; line-height:150px; overflow:hidden;} After I upload and refresh the website I don't see any changes but if I check the source code: I see the css properties. It's very strange for me, I've tried to upload on another server and there it works. Any ideas why this is not working ?

Android/Java AI agent framework/middleware

I am looking for an AI agent framework to use as a starting point in an Android game I have to create for a university research project. It has been suggested to me to use JADE, but, as far as I can tell, it's not a suitable framework for games (at least for my game idea) because it runs in a split-execution mode, and it needs an always-active network connection to a main host. What I want is just a little something to give me a headstart. I am willing to adjust the game's features to the framework because it's more of a mockup game, and the purpose is to compare the performance of a couple of agents in the game world. The game will be very simplistic, with a minimal UI that displays various stats about the characters in the game (so no graphics, no pathfinding). Thank you.

need advice for small css issue [migrated]

I have a small design problem in my css, and I'd like to know if someone could check it out for me. The design problem is in the rollover effect of my horizontal navigation. css problem lining up some icons...

I'm having a problem lining up some icons and am new enough to css that I'm not exactly sure how to explain this. So I've attached a picture of what the out put is rendering like. I've also included what the css and html code is. Hopefully someone can help point me in the right direction to help fix this. I want the "edit", "archive", "delete" icons to all line up in the right side exactly the same as the first row in the picture. CSS-Specifity and CSS Inheritance (concrete question)?

Hello, i would by thankful for an official link (and section) of the specification for CSS, that explains if: .one two h1 {color:green;font-family:arial;} /*case 1 */ .one two h1 {color:blue;} /*case 2*/ will result in (when evaluated by the browser) .one two h1 {color:blue;font-family:arial;} /*case 3*/ or will it be: .one two h1 {color:blue;} /*case 4*/ ==I have read a lot about inheritance, specifity, cascading etc but I still have not found for the given example which rules apply here. In regard to specifity both elements are equal in specifity the case2 will be the most specify one (as it is equal specific but the last one). But does specifity always apply to the whole selector with ALL properties defined. Or only the the properties that are are in "competition" (and declared in both). thanks!!!!

CSS layout that fills available space

I'm trying to do a seemingly simple webpage layout, but I'm hitting a wall. I'd like to do everything purely with CSS (no tables to much things up, and no javascript dynamically resizing things) I'd like to have: A heading with a fixed height A footer with a fixed height Left sidebar with a fixed width Right sidebar with a fixed width The whole layout always fills the entire viewport (i.e. if the user resizes the window, the layout grows to the new size) Put another way: |< Total width is 100% of viewport >| +--------------------------------------------------------------+ --- | Header with a fixed height | ^ |--------+-------------------------------------------+---------+ | | | | | | | | | Left | | Right | Total | with | Center grows in height/width | with | height | fixed | and has scrollbars if necessary | fixed | is | width | | width | 100% | | | | of | | | | viewport | | | | |--------+-------------------------------------------+---------| | Footer with a fixed height | v +--------------------------------------------------------------+ --- The parts that are giving me the most trouble are Having the sidebars and center have a height equal to the height of the viewport minus the heights of the header and footer Having the center have a width equal to the width of the viewport minus the widths of the two sidebars I have no problem requiring users to have a modern browser. CSS sliding door background image problem.

I noticed I am not the first to ask about CSS sliding doors. However this seems (at least to me) to be a rather odd problem which I have not seen an answer for. Trying to create a simple rounded corner link button: html: <a href="#" class="link_button"><span>Add A New Somthing</span></a> css: .link_button { background: transparent url('img/backgrounds/bg-buttonRight.png') no-repeat scroll top right; color: #444; display: block; float: left; font: normal 12px arial; height: 41px; margin-right: 6px; padding-right: 14px; text-decoration: none; } .link_button span { background: transparent url('img/backgrounds/bg-buttonLeft.png') no-repeat top left; display: block; line-height: 31px; padding: 5px 0 5px 14px; } .link_button:active { background-position: bottom right; color: #000; outline: none; } .link_button:active span { background-position: bottom left; padding: 6px 0 4px 18px; } results: The two images are overlapping, which is what I want, but why the discoloration? Why would one be darker? I tried using png jpg, gif, with and without transparency. I posted the code here, along with another attempt using only one jpg instead of two, but still the same results. CSS: Style applied to a combination of classes?

Hi All, I'm not sure this is possible, but is there a syntax to be used in CSS when you want to style an element based on the combination of classes applied to it? I understand that I can check an element with jQuery or something and change it's style based on the classes it has, but is there a pure CSS way to do this? For example, if I have a class for bold and green: .bold_green { color:green; font-weight:bold; } And a class for bold and blue: .bold_blue { color:green; font-weight:bold. } Now, say I am using jQuery to add and remove classes dynamically and want any element that has both classes to turn italic pink. Something like: .bold_green AND .bold_blue { color:pink; font-style:italic; } Or, if I want to style an element that has aclass, and is a descendant of another element that has another class? Something like: .bold_green HAS_CHILD .bold_blue { color:black; background-color:yellow; } Thanks!

CSS: Horizontally scrolling image inside variable width div?

I have... <div id="tabs">  <div id="interior-photo"> <img src="..."> </div>  </div> ... and ... #interior-photo { overflow-x: auto; } Basically, I have a page broken down into a main section and a fixed-width right sidebar. Within the main section, I have my tabbed div. The entire page grows with the width of the window, so when the window is resized, the tabbed div grows horizontally in size too. My problem is that the image that I'm loading inside one of the tabbed divs is generally much, much wider than the window usually is (they're panorama pictures; very lengthy horizontally, but not much vertically). I know that I can force the contents of #interior-photo to scroll horizontally using the CSS rule above, but that only seems to work when that same div has a fixed width. Since I want that div to have a variable width, it always seems to display the full width of the image, pushing my layout way out of whack. I know how to fix this using Javascript, but I was wondering if anyone has a CSS-only solution. If you need more information about my layout to solve this issue, please let me know. Thanks!

Creating a horizontal fluid layout in css that works like a table

Basically what i am after is a fluid solution in css, that is similar to the table layout below.The principal behind this layout is 3x3 grid where by a user can add content into the first fluid area and it will expand the complete width of the page. But if that user decides that he wants content in the 2nd and 3rd area, all 3 td's fill up 33% of the width. Blueprint CSS and Separation of Presentation and Content When Designing Forms

Is it possible to use Blueprint CSS and maintain a a respectable level of separation between presentation and content? I like how easy the framework is to use when designing forms, but am worried that the manner in which I use the css classes for columnizing elements is a bad practice. For instance, say I have a 3 field form designed using blueprint: <div class="container"> <form action="" method="post" class="inline"> <fieldset> <legend>Example</legend> <div class="span-3"> <label for="a">Label A:</label> <input type="text" class="text" id="a" name="a" > </div> <div class="span-2"> <label for="b">Label B:</label> <input type="text" class="text" id="b" name="b" > </div> <div class="span-3"> <label for="o">Label O:</label> <input type="checkbox" id="o" name="o" value="true" checked="checked" class="checkbox">checkbox one </div> <div class="span-2 last"> <input type="submit" value="submit" class="button"> </div> </fieldset> </form> </div> Is using a class attribute with names like "span-2", "inline", and "last" a bad practice? Or am I missing the point?

how to dynamically replace css?

I've got an image on the page (class='image') within the div (class='galleria_wrapper') and want to place a caption (class='caption') at the lower right corner under that image. The image could be vertical or horizontal, and making a fixed padding-right value let's say .caption<{float:right;padding-top:5px;padding-right:90px;} is not working for one or another. I need to switch on the fly padding-right value depending on horizontal or vertical image is currently on the page. I can theoretically access image's width through document.getElementByName('image').width although don't understand where to put that code. So, I probably need something like that: document.getElementByClass('caption').padding-right = (document.getElementByName('galleria_wrapper').width - document.getElementByName('image').width)/2 Where do I put this code? I do have that in my css file: .caption{float:right;padding-top:5px;} which places the caption below the image, but to far to the right (div 'galleria_wrapper' is wider than most of the images supposed to be displayed within that area). I have an img tag in the html: <img src=image title='this is caption' /></li> ...and some JavaScript which makes title displayed styled by the "caption" css definition. How do I assign variable value for the padding-right without in-advance knowledge of particular image's width?

JQuery fadeIn() moving other CSS elements on fadeIn()

Hi, I've just been learning some jQUery to get a basic image gallery going on a website I'm creating for a hotel but it's currently not going to plan. I've got it so the arrows will cycle through images (no animation yet) but I decided that the arrows should fade in when the image is hovered over and fade out when not but this is messing up the CSS somehow. The arrows start faded out by calling: $('.arrowRight').fadeOut(0);$('.arrowLeft').fadeOut(0); at the start of the jQuery ready() function. This is fine, but when you hover over the image and the arrows fade in, the image shifts to the right and I don't know why. I suppose it could be because the left arrow now fading in means it is getting pushed over by it but the arrow has the following css: position:relative; top: -90px; left: 25px; Should a relative element be able to alter a normal element's position? If you need to try it out, just hover over the large (placeholder) image and they image will jump across when the arrows fade in and jump back when they fade out. Any ideas why this is happening? CSS animated menu

I am trying to obtain something similar to the "share this on..." menu here but I don't quite understand how they are doing this, even after a look at their CSS. I refer to the fact that the images show up on hover. My first attempt would be something like <div id="share_on"> <ul> <li><a href="#"><img src="shareon-digg.png" /></a></li> <li><a href="#"><img src="shareon-reddit.png" /></a></li> ... <li><a href="#"><img src="shareon-stumbleupon.png" /></a></li> </ul> </div> and the CSS: #share_on {overflow: hidden} #share_on ul {margin-bottom: -16px} #share_on li {display: inline} #share_on li:hover {margin-top: -16px} Of course this does not work, which is why I am asking here. In the inactive state, only half of the icon shows up, which is the expected behaviour. But on hover, nothing changes. I also have tried some variations, like #share_on li:hover {margin-bottom: 16px} or #share_on li:hover {padding-bottom: 16px} but none of these works. Any ideas?

CSS selector involving pseudo class first-child and dropcap

Hi, I need to format HTML similar to below. Basically a quote is optional, and I need to dropcap the first letter of the body paragraph. <article> <p class="quote">  Genius begins great works; labor alone finishes them.-- Joseph Joubert </p> <p>  Life is like a box of chocolates. </p> <p>...</p> <p>...</p> </article> My CSS looks like this: article > p:first-child:first-letter { float: left; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 360%; line-height: 0.85em; margin-right: 0.05em; } p.quote { font-weight: bold; } It doesn't work currently when the quote is introduced. AFAIK I can't select the article's first child P which is not class "quote." I'll use jQuery if I can't figure this out, but for now I'm looking for a way to do it CSS only. Thanks in advance!

Blueprint CSS & Boks: strange behavior with prepend and append in FF and Chrome

Hi, I am working a bit with Blueprint CSS framework and I stumbled upon Boks. I am pretty unfamiliar with the BPCSS framework, but it seems that when using prepend and append, Firefox and Chrome (both) are not liking the input. I generated the code from Boks and for my newbe eye-sight, I can't directly see what went wrong in the export.
