  • 12.04 Install Freeze, Blank Cursor Page

    I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 via a live CD and most recently with the windows installer I found on line. The windows installer seemed to be working; I selected the partitioned portion of the drive on which to install Ubuntu and started the install process. The process freezes on a page with a flashing cursor and nothing else displayed. I have read about similar problems but have not been able to implement any of the solutions people have discussed. Any ideas on what might be hanging up the process, or how to get a better idea of what is causing the problem would be helpful. If anyone has had this problem and has a solution it would be GREATLY appreciated!

  • Mouse cursor lag after lock screen, 64 bit 12.04

    Recently I have noticed that when I return to my computer after it has been "locked" for a while, the mouse pointer has significant lag. The cursor position appears to only update a few times a second. Moving the mouse results in the pointer "following" the movement in a jerky kind of way, and then continuing for some fraction of a second after I have stopped using the mouse. Replacing the mouse has no effect. (I have two differently branded and constructed usb optical mice). Plugging either mouse into a different usb port has no effect. Once the problem was resolved by "suspending" the system, and then re-starting it with the power switch, but this does not work every time. So far, the only fool-proof fix is to shut the system down and re-start it (re-boot). I have tried this suggested fix. It had no effect.

  • Time display and Cursor bug in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

    Just installed Ubuntu 14.04. Noticed the time in seconds speeds up then slows down to normal speed. The cursor for the keyboard has a strange rhythm; it stays normal, then slowly speeds up faster and faster till it looks like it's not blinking anymore, then goes back to normal and starts the process again. It almost seems like my whole operating system speeds up then slows down again. Even the hour circle that spins when it's loading starts slowly then it picks up speed till it spins so fast it looks like it's not even spinning. It interferes with video and the whole system. I have a Dell Vostro 3750 dual video cards and dual boot with Windows 7. Windows is running fine.

    Running Lucid. Computer worked fine last night, went to bed and found the following problem this morning: (so no hard or software changes) Computer boots up, screen displays normally; date & time correct, background normal, toolbars OK, everything looks normal. Cursor moves round screen in the traditional manner but clicking produces nothing, not left, right or centre. Nothing will open. Tried restarting, using different USB ports and a different mouse. Have reduced system to minimum; monitor keyboard mouse only. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance, David D

  • "Executing SQL directly; no cursor" error when using SCOPE_IDENTITY

    There wasn't much on google about this error, so I'm askin here. I'm switching a PHP web application from using MySQL to SQL Server 2008 (using ODBC, not php_mssql). Running queries or anything else isn't a problem, but when I try to do scope_identity (or any similar functions), I get the error "Executing SQL directly; no cursor". I'm doing this immediately after an insert, so it should still be in scope. Running the same insert statement then query for the insert ID works fine in SQL Server Management Studio. Here's my code right now (everything else in the database wrapper class works fine for other queries, so I'll assume it isn't relevant right now): function insert_id(){ $x = $this->query_first("SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY('session_log') as insert_id"); echo "($x)"; return $x; } query_first being a function that returns the first result from the first field of a query (basically the equivalent of execute_scalar() on .net).   • Over-Current condition on port 7 or 8

    I am having a problem with my USB ports. It shows over-current conditions on ports 7 and 8. I have heard that this is caused by a damaged USB port, and since it is detecting it on two ports it seems that I have two that are broken. I do indeed have two that do not work, so that is not the issue. What I would like to do is disable whatever program is running over-current condition checks. tty's are unusable at this point. Every few second a new over-current condition occurs. Fixing them is not important or an option.

    I am creating an application that can be executed in any windows version, even in mobile's, and I am trying to get the current directory of the executable. The problem is that if I use the following code, it doesn't compile in Windows Mobile: string currentDirectory = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Windows.Forms.Application.ExecutablePath); And if I use this code, I receive something like: file:\C:\xxx string currentDirectory = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Windows.Forms.Application.ExecutablePath); Although, I need to get the root drive, and this code doesn't compile in Windows Mobile: String rootPath = Path.GetPathRoot(Environment.SystemDirectory); Does anyone know how to get the current directory of the application and the root path for any windows version, even mobile's?

  • C# Cursor stuck on busy state

    So I implemented a fixed time step loop for my C# game. All it does at the moment is make a square bounce around the screen. The problem I'm having is that when I execute the program, the window doesn't allow me to close the program and the cursor is stuck on the busy icon. I have to go into visual studio and stop the program manually.   • Ubuntu won't start - blank screen with flashing white cursor

    My laptop is dual-booted with Windows 8 on one partition and Ubuntu 12.04.3 on the other. I've searched for my issue already, but nothing I've found so far has solved the problem. Since last week, when I try to boot Ubuntu from GRUB, I am taken to a purple screen (as usual), but then to a black screen with a blinking white _ cursor. I've tried leaving it, but nothing else happens. When I hold Shift and edit the GRUB entry to change 'quiet slash' to 'text', the back screen instead asks for my login and password. When I put them in, it tells me the date of my last logon, and then waits for further commands. Being very very new to Ubuntu, I have no idea at all what to try out at this point. I tried to launch FailsafeX, but while that was beginning, it said "unable to run server /usr/bin/x" No such file or directory", then shortly after returned to the recovery mode menu. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete goes through an Ubuntu loading screen, then the laptop then restarts. Any suggestions will be very appreciated, and apologies if this is a common issue that has been answered a million times before.

    I have some CSS code that hides the cursor on a web page (it is a client facing static screen with no interaction). The code I use to do this is below: *, html { cursor: url('/web/resources/graphics/blank.cur'), pointer; } Blank.cur is a totally blank cursor file. This code works perfectly well in all browsers when I host the web files on my local server but when I upload to a Windows CE webserver (our production unit) the cursor represents itself as a black box. Odd. After some testing it seems that chrome only has a problem with totally blank cursor files when served from WinCE web server, so I created a blank cursor with one pixel as white, specifically for chrome. How do I then target this CSS rule to chrome specifically? i.e. *, html { cursor: url('/web/resources/graphics/blank.cur'), pointer; } <!--[if CHROME]> *, html { cursor: url('/web/resources/graphics/blankChrome.cur'), pointer; } <![endif]-->

  • Macbook (non-pro, late 2010) Power Management Issues relating to Nvidia-Current drivers

    I have tried many potential solutions but to no avail! (this is going to be a long post) Essentially, when I first install ubuntu (I have tested 10.11-12.04 beta) I can change the brightness of the macbook backlight. One of the first things I usually do once my machine finishes installing is enter "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current" into the terminal to get my Nvidia graphics card set up. Before I install nvidia-current power management works flawlessly. After installing nvidia-current my graphics driver works mostly properly (more on that later). When I press F1 or F2 notify osd pops up and shows icon for the backlight along with a meter which changes according to how much I press F1 or F2, but the backlight does not change brightness at all. Two supplementary facts: when I am running off of battery power the backlight does not dim ever, also changing the backlight brightness through the terminal does not work (it recognizes the command but changes nothing).   • Environmental Variable for current domain

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Desktop edition I want to use environmental variable for currently joined domain just like i use $USER to bring current user. From what i read there are few variables for that but none seem to work for me. I also cannot see those variables as active when i type env command. I would appreciate a solution on how to enable that variable or how to make my own variable by pulling current domain name from the system somehow.

    Like the title says. I would love to know how, with VimScript, I can do an if statement, that checks if %Y (for statusline) exists in the current file.   • Sometimes, Synaptics Touchpad Tends Cursor to Top-Right Corner

    This has been a reoccurring issue for me, pretty much since I've owned this laptop (an ASUS G60JX.) Sometimes, the cursor will stop working properly and instead tend toward the top right of the screen. Basically, sometime into my usage (maybe after a couple hours) the touchpad will inevitably begin to malfunction, where it has confusing patterns of pushing the mouse cursor toward the top right of the screen. In addition, certain features (like momentum) seem to quit working entirely. It makes using the cursor extremely difficult. I've been having this issue across very many drivers. Pretty much as soon as multitouch came into the mix, although I don't believe multitouch has anything to do with it. It appears that, in the state of malfunction, it doesn't matter how you touch the touchpad, but where you touch it. Certain regions do not seem to trigger the cursor to move to the top right corner. In fact, no specific region seems to, but some areas do so more often than others. The issue can be resolved temporarily by putting the computer into sleep mode and awakening it. I have found no way to recreate this success without sleeping the computer or rebooting. Disabling and re-enabling the touchpad device does not do anything to resolve the problem. This issue does not affect my WACOM tablet nor any USB mice, and can be resolved (not to my satisfactory) by uninstalling the touchpad drivers. I'm looking for a solution, or at least a workaround that doesn't require sleep mode.

  • Vim move cursor one character in insert mode without arrow keys

    This might seem a little too overboard, but I switched to vim and I so happy about the workflow now. I try to discipline myself not to use the arrow keys, as keeping the hands on the alfa-keys all the time is such a big thing when writing. So when I need to navigate I get out of insert mode, move in normal mode and get back in insert mode. There is an exception where this is actually more disrupting: I use clang complete with snippets and super tab which is great. Except every time I get a function auto completed after I fill in the parameters I am left with the cursor before ) so to continue I have to move the cursor one character to the right. As you can imagine this happens very often. The only options I have (as far as I know) are : Escla or ?, and I am not happy about neither of them. The first one makes me hit 3 keys for just a simple 1 character cursor move, the second one makes me move my hand to the arrow keys. A third option would be to map CTRL-L or smth to ?.   • IIS/ASP.NET performance incident - Perfmon Current Annonymous Users going through roof but Requests/sec low

    Setup: ASP.NET 4.0 website on IIS 6.0 on Win 2003 64 bit, 8xCPUs, 16GB memory, separate SQL 2005 DB server. Had a serious slowdown today with any otherwise fairly well performing ASP.NET site. For a period of a couple of hours all page requests were taking a very long time to be served - e.g. 30-60s compared to usual 2s. The w3wp.exe's CPU and memory usage on the webserver was not much higher than normal. The application pool was not in the middle of recycling (and it hadn't recycled for several hours). Bottlenecks in the database were ruled out - no blocks occurring and query results were being returned quickly. I couldn't make any sense of it and set up the following Perfmon counters: Current Anonymous Users (for site in question) Get requests/sec (ditto) Requests/sec for the ASP.NET application running the site Get requests/sec was averaging 100-150. Requests/sec for ASP.NET was averaging 5-10. However Current Anonymous Users was around 200. And then as I was watching, the Current Anonymous Users began to climb steeply going up to about 500 within a few minutes. All this time Get requests/sec & Requests/sec for ASP.NET was if anything going down. I did a whole load of things (in a panic!) to try to get the site working, like shutting it down, recycling the app pool, and adding another worker process to the pool. I also extended the expiration time for content (in IIS under HTTP Headers) in an attempt to lower the number of requests for static files (there are a lot of images on the site). The site is now back to normal, and the counters are fairly steady and reading (added Current Connections counter): Current Anonymous Users : average 30 Get requests/sec : average 100 Requests/sec for ASP.NET : 5 Current Connections : average 300 I have also observed an inverse relationship between Get requests/sec & Current Anonymous Users. Usually both are fairly steady but there will be short periods when Get requests/sec will go down dramatically and Current Anonymous Users will go up in a perfect mirror image. Then they will flip back to their usual levels. So, my questions are: Thinking of the original performance issue - if w3wp.exe CPU, memory usage were normal and there was no DB bottleneck, what could explain page requests taking 20 times longer to be served than usual? What other counters should I be looking at if this happens again? What explains the inverse relationship between Get requests/sec & Current Anonymous Users? What could explain Current Anonymous Users going from 200 to 500 within a few minutes? Many thanks for any insight into this.
