  • How To Peel Garlic In Quick & Easy Way

    - by Gopinath
Garlic is very common ingredient used in cooking in many parts of the world. In India it’s an undeniable ingredient in almost all the food items that are made using masala. So every cook of Indian kitchen knows the pain of peeling garlic. It’s a messy and time consuming process to peel of all the dead skin layers to get the tasty cloves. Cooking web site Saveur shows us as easy way to peel an entire garlic in less than 10 seconds using just two bowls.  No knifes, no scissor or any other instruments. Check the embedded video   I’ve not yet tried this trick at home, but looks like very easy one. What do you say? via Lifehacker (thanks vijay). cc image credit: flickr/lightlady

  • Is it a bad idea to run SELinux and AppArmor at the same time?

    - by jgbelacqua
My corporate policy says that Linux boxes must be secured with SELinux (so that a security auditor can check the 'yes, we're extremely secure!' checkbox for each server). I had hoped to take advantage of Ubuntu's awesome default AppArmor security. Is it unwise to run both Apparmor and SELinux? (If so, can this bad idea be mitigated with some apparmor and/or selinux tweaks?) Update 1/28 -- Kees Cook has pointed out in his answer the dead simple reason why it's a bad idea to run both -- the Linux kernel says you can't1. [ 1 More precisely, the Linux Security Modules interface framework is designed for a single running implementation, and does not support more than a single running implementation. ] Update 1/27 -- I've accepted the answer from kenny.r , though I would be happier with some more technical reasons of why this would fail, or examples of actual conflicts that this would cause.

  • SSIS Tips & Tricks (Presentation)

This has been a rather well used presentation title but it does allow a certain degree of flexibility, and we covered a good range of topics in my session at the UK SQL Server User Group in Cambridge last night. Thanks to all who attended. Here is the rather limited slide deck and the all important demo packages for download as promised. For reference, high level topics covered were BIDS Helper Inserts and Updates Transactions Script Debugging Data Flow Checkpoints I’ll update the post with a link to the Live Meeting recording when I get it.

  • Design Patterns for SSIS Performance (Presentation)

Here are the slides from my session (Design patterns for SSIS Performance) presented at SQLBits VI in London last Friday. Slides - Design Patterns for SSIS Performance - Darren Green.pptx (86KB) It was an interesting session, with some very kind feedback, especially considering I woke up on Friday without a voice. The remnants of a near fatal case on man flu rather than any overindulgence the night before I assure you. With much coughing, I tried to turn the off the radio mike during the worst, and an interesting vocal range, we got through it and it seemed to be well received. Thanks to all those who attended.

  • how do you spend your day? a day from a programmer's life [closed]

    - by RBA
First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day. If you consider this question is a good question, please vote to reopen it. best regards, Radu

  • Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook

Alas I find my self doing another book review... its not clear to me that I should continue to do that but on this particular book it heads in the right direction. As noted in an earlier post I find the idea of a cook book to be of particular interest and useful in my work with Silverlight. This book has gotten closer then any other to date in building the ideal Silverlight book. Albeit the book does make an attempt to teach Silverlight to some degree but it tends to be more of a reference book,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Paging through records (json data) using jQuery...

    - by Pandiya Chendur
    I have a JSON result that contains numerous records. I'd like to show the first five records in one page and create pager links which have to move to that page with five record so on. I don't want the page to refresh which is why I'm hoping for a combination of JavaScript and jQuery. EDIT: It should paginate through json data.... similar to this I use my json data and iterating with jquery var jsonObj = jQuery.parseJSON(HfJsonValue); for (var i = jsonObj.Table.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) { var employee = jsonObj.Table[i]; $('<div class="resultsdiv"><br /><span class="resultName">' + employee.Emp_Name + '</span><span class="resultfields" style="padding-left:100px;">Category&nbsp;:</span>&nbsp;<span class="resultfieldvalues">' + employee.Desig_Name + '</span><br /><br /><span id="SalaryBasis" class="resultfields">Salary Basis&nbsp;:</span>&nbsp;<span class="resultfieldvalues">' + employee.SalaryBasis + '</span><span class="resultfields" style="padding-left:25px;">Salary&nbsp;:</span>&nbsp;<span class="resultfieldvalues">' + employee.FixedSalary + '</span><span style="font-size:110%;font-weight:bolder;padding-left:25px;">Address&nbsp;:</span>&nbsp;<span class="resultfieldvalues">' + employee.Address + '</span></div>').insertAfter('#ResultsDiv'); } There are 25 divs in my page as a result i want to show first five divs in page 1 and so on... Any suggestion... My HfJsonValue contains the following json data {"Table" : [{"Emp_Id" : "3","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Jerome","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Supervisior","Desig_Description" : "Supervisior of the Construction","SalaryBasis" : "Monthly","FixedSalary" : "25000.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "4","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Mohan","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Acc ","Desig_Description" : "Accountant","SalaryBasis" : "Monthly","FixedSalary" : "200.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "5","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Murugan","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Mason","Desig_Description" : "Mason","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "150.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "6","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Ram","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Mason","Desig_Description" : "Mason","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "120.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "7","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Raja","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Mason","Desig_Description" : "Mason","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "135.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "8","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Raja kumar","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Mason Helper","Desig_Description" : "Mason Helper","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "105.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "9","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Lakshmi","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Mason Helper","Desig_Description" : "Mason Helper","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "100.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "10","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Palani","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Carpenter","Desig_Description" : "Carpenter","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "200.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "11","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Annamalai","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Carpenter","Desig_Description" : "Carpenter","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "220.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "12","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "David","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Steel Fixer","Desig_Description" : "Steel Fixer","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "220.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "13","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Chandru","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Steel Fixer","Desig_Description" : "Steel Fixer","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "220.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "14","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Mani","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Steel Helper","Desig_Description" : "Steel Helper","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "175.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "15","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Karthik","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Wood Fixer","Desig_Description" : "Wood Fixer","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "195.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "16","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Bala","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Wood Fixer","Desig_Description" : "Wood Fixer","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "185.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "17","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Tamil arasi","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Wood Helper","Desig_Description" : "Wood Helper","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "185.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "18","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Perumal","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Cook","Desig_Description" : "Cook","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "105.00"},{"Emp_Id" : "19","Identity_No" : "","Emp_Name" : "Andiappan","Address" : "Madurai","Date_Of_Birth" : "","Desig_Name" : "Watchman","Desig_Description" : "Watchman","SalaryBasis" : "Weekly","FixedSalary" : "150.00"}]}

Any suggestion...

Am I missing something or should my custom route work with the index.php (or nothing) instead of frontend_dev.php? I'm getting a 500 error when I go to the model, and a 404 for the show page. My route is: project_show: url: /project/:slug class: sfDoctrineRoute options: { model: Project, type: object } param: { module: project, action: show } Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! • Why is my producer-consumer blocking?

    - by User007
My code is here: http://pastebin.com/Fi3h0E0P Here is the output 0 Should we take order today (y or n): y Enter order number: 100 More customers (y or n): n Stop serving customers right now. Passing orders to cooker: There are total of 1 order(s) 1 Roger, waiter. I am processing order #100 The goal is waiter must take orders and then give them to the cook. The waiter has to wait cook finishes all pizza, deliver the pizza, and then take new orders. I asked how P-V work in my previous post here. I don't think it has anything to do with \n consuming? I tried all kinds of combination of wait(), but none work. Where did I make a mistake? The main part is here: //Producer process if(pid > 0) { while(1) { printf("0"); P(emptyShelf); // waiter as P finds no items on shelf; P(mutex); // has permission to use the shelf waiter_as_producer(); V(mutex); // cooker now can use the shelf V(orderOnShelf); // cooker now can pickup orders wait(); printf("2"); P(pizzaOnShelf); P(mutex); waiter_as_consumer(); V(mutex); V(emptyShelf); printf("3 "); } } if(pid == 0) { while(1) { printf("1"); P(orderOnShelf); // make sure there is an order on shelf P(mutex); //permission to work cooker_as_consumer(); // take order and put pizza on shelf printf("return from cooker"); V(mutex); //release permission printf("just released perm"); V(pizzaOnShelf); // pizza is now on shelf printf("after"); wait(); printf("4"); } } So I imagine this is the execution path: enter waiter_as_producer, then go to child process (cooker), then transfer the control back to parent, finish waiter_as_consumer, switch back to child. The two waits switch back to parent (like I said I tried all possible wait() combination...).

  • Iphone sdk - How to setup a 'template'

    - by Dave
I've been working on a Cook Book App and I've been making each page individually which takes a really long time to do, I asked a question similar to this and it was brought to my attention that you can setup a way to automate the design process so all you need to do is input your data. Can someone please explain in as much detail as possible how you setup your xcode files/code to automate this process Thanks

  • Any Javascript optimization benchmarks?

    - by int3
I watched Nicholas Zakas' talk, Speed up your Javascript, with some interest. I liked how he benchmarked the various performance improvements created by various optimization techniques, e.g. reducing calls to deeply nested objects, changing loops to count down instead of up, etc. I would like to run these benchmarks myself though, to see exactly how our current browsers are faring. I guess it wouldn't be too difficult to cook up some timed loops, but I'd like to know if there are any existing implementations out there.

  • Interesting articles and blogs on SPARC T4

    - by mv
Interesting articles and blogs on SPARC T4 processor   I have consolidated all the interesting information I could get on SPARC T4 processor and its hardware cryptographic capabilities.  Hope its useful. 1. Advantages of SPARC T4 processor  Most important points in this T4 announcement are : "The SPARC T4 processor was designed from the ground up for high speed security and has a cryptographic stream processing unit (SPU) integrated directly into each processor core. These accelerators support 16 industry standard security ciphers and enable high speed encryption at rates 3 to 5 times that of competing processors. By integrating encryption capabilities directly inside the instruction pipeline, the SPARC T4 processor eliminates the performance and cost barriers typically associated with secure computing and makes it possible to deliver high security levels without impacting the user experience." Data Sheet has more details on these  : "New on-chip Encryption Instruction Accelerators with direct non-privileged support for 16 industry-standard cryptographic algorithms plus random number generation in each of the eight cores: AES, Camellia, CRC32c, DES, 3DES, DH, DSA, ECC, Kasumi, MD5, RSA, SHA-1, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512" I ran "isainfo -v" command on Solaris 11 Sparc T4-1 system. It shows the new instructions as expected  : $ isainfo -v 64-bit sparcv9 applications crc32c cbcond pause mont mpmul sha512 sha256 sha1 md5 camellia kasumi des aes ima hpc vis3 fmaf asi_blk_init vis2 vis popc 32-bit sparc applications crc32c cbcond pause mont mpmul sha512 sha256 sha1 md5 camellia kasumi des aes ima hpc vis3 fmaf asi_blk_init vis2 vis popc v8plus div32 mul32  2.  Dan Anderson's Blog have some interesting points about how these can be used : "New T4 crypto instructions include: aes_kexpand0, aes_kexpand1, aes_kexpand2,         aes_eround01, aes_eround23, aes_eround01_l, aes_eround_23_l, aes_dround01, aes_dround23, aes_dround01_l, aes_dround_23_l.       Having SPARC T4 hardware crypto instructions is all well and good, but how do we access it ?      The software is available with Solaris 11 and is used automatically if you are running Solaris a SPARC T4.  It is used internally in the kernel through kernel crypto modules.  It is available in user space through the PKCS#11 library." 3.   Dans' Blog on Where's the Crypto Libraries? Although this was written in 2009 but still is very useful  "Here's a brief tour of the major crypto libraries shown in the digraph:   The libpkcs11 library contains the PKCS#11 API (C_\*() functions, such as C_Initialize()). That in turn calls library pkcs11_softtoken or pkcs11_kernel, for userland or kernel crypto providers. The latter is used mostly for hardware-assisted cryptography (such as n2cp for Niagara2 SPARC processors), as that is performed more efficiently in kernel space with the "kCF" module (Kernel Crypto Framework). Additionally, for Solaris 10, strong crypto algorithms were split off in separate libraries, pkcs11_softtoken_extra libcryptoutil contains low-level utility functions to help implement cryptography. libsoftcrypto (OpenSolaris and Solaris Nevada only) implements several symmetric-key crypto algorithms in software, such as AES, RC4, and DES3, and the bignum library (used for RSA). libmd implements MD5, SHA, and SHA2 message digest algorithms" 4. Difference in T3 and T4 Diagram in this blog is good and self explanatory. Jeff's blog also highlights the differences  "The T4 servers have improved crypto acceleration, described at https://blogs.oracle.com/DanX/entry/sparc_t4_openssl_engine. It is "just built in" so administrators no longer have to assign crypto accelerator units to domains - it "just happens". Every physical or virtual CPU on a SPARC-T4 has full access to hardware based crypto acceleration at all times. .... For completeness sake, it's worth noting that the T4 adds more crypto algorithms, and accelerates Camelia, CRC32c, and more SHA-x." 5. About performance counters In this blog, performance counters are explained : "Note that unlike T3 and before, T4 crypto doesn't require kernel modules like ncp or n2cp, there is no visibility of crypto hardware with kstats or cryptoadm. T4 does provide hardware counters for crypto operations.  You can see these using cpustat: cpustat -c pic0=Instr_FGU_crypto 5 You can check the general crypto support of the hardware and OS with the command "isainfo -v". Since T4 crypto's implementation now allows direct userland access, there are no "crypto units" visible to cryptoadm.  " For more details refer Martin's blog as well. 6. How to turn off  SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration  I found this interesting blog from Darren about how to turn off  SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration. "One of the new Solaris 11 features of the linker/loader is the ability to have a single ELF object that has multiple different implementations of the same functions that are selected at runtime based on the capabilities of the machine.   The alternate to this is having the application coded to call getisax(2) system call and make the choice itself.  We use this functionality of the linker/loader when we build the userland libraries for the Solaris Cryptographic Framework (specifically libmd.so and libsoftcrypto.so) The Solaris linker/loader allows control of a lot of its functionality via environment variables, we can use that to control the version of the cryptographic functions we run.  To do this we simply export the LD_HWCAP environment variable with values that tell ld.so.1 to not select the HWCAP section matching certain features even if isainfo says they are present.  This will work for consumers of the Solaris Cryptographic Framework that use the Solaris PKCS#11 libraries or use libmd.so interfaces directly.  For SPARC T4 : export LD_HWCAP="-aes -des -md5 -sha256 -sha512 -mont -mpul" .. For Intel systems with AES-NI support: export LD_HWCAP="-aes"" Note that LD_HWCAP is explained in  http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23823_01/html/816-5165/ld.so.1-1.html "LD_HWCAP, LD_HWCAP_32, and LD_HWCAP_64 -  Identifies an alternative hardware capabilities value... A “-” prefix results in the capabilities that follow being removed from the alternative capabilities." 7. Whitepaper on SPARC T4 Servers—Optimized for End-to-End Data Center Computing This Whitepaper on SPARC T4 Servers—Optimized for End-to-End Data Center Computing explains more details.  It has DTrace scripts which may come in handy : "To ensure the hardware-assisted cryptographic acceleration is configured to use and working with the security scenarios, it is recommended to use the following Solaris DTrace script. #!/usr/sbin/dtrace -s pid$1:libsoftcrypto:yf*:entry, pid$target:libsoftcrypto:rsa*:entry, pid$1:libmd:yf*:entry { @[probefunc] = count(); } tick-1sec { printa(@ops); trunc(@ops); }" Note that I have slightly modified the D Script to have RSA "libsoftcrypto:rsa*:entry" as well as per recommendations from Chi-Chang Lin. 8. • Flashing your Windows Phone Dummies

    - by Martin Hinshelwood
The rate at which vendors release new updates for the HD2 is ridiculously slow. You have to wait for Microsoft to release the new OS, then you wait for HTC to build it into a ROM, and then you have to wait up to 6 months for your operator to badly customise it for their network. Once Windows Phone 7 is released this problem should go away as Microsoft is likely to be able to update the phone over the air, but what do we do until then? I want Windows Mobile 6.5.5 now!   I’m an early adopter. If there is a new version of something then that’s the version I want. As long as you accept that you are using something on a “let the early adopter beware” and accept that there may be bugs, sometimes serious crippling bugs the go for it. Note that I won't be responsible if you end up bricking your phone, unlocking or flashing your radio or ROM can be risky. If you follow the instructions then you should be fine, I've flashed my phones (SPV, M300, M1000, M2000, M3100, TyTN, TyTN 2, HD2) hundreds of times without any problems! I have been using Windows Mobile 6.5.5 before it was called 6.5.5 and for long enough that I don’t even remember when I first started using it. I was using it on my HTC TyTN 2 before I got an HD2 a couple of months before Christmas, and the first custom ROM’s for the HD2 were a couple of months after that. I always update to the latest ROM that I like, and occasionally I go back to the stock ROM’s to have a look see, but I am always disappointed. Terms: Soft Reset: Same as pulling out the battery, but is like a reboot for your phone Hard Reset: Reinstalls the Operating system from the Image that is stored on it ROM: This is Image that is loaded onto your phone and it is used to reinstall your phone whenever you do a “hard reset”. Stock ROM: A ROM from the original vendor… So HTC Cook a ROM: Referring to Cooking a ROM is the process a ROM developer goes through to take all of the parts (OS, Drivers and Applications) that make up a running phone and compiling them into a ROM. ROM Kitchen: A place where you get an SDK and all the component parts of the phone: OD, Drivers and Application. There are usually lots of Tools for making it easier to compile and build the image. Flashing: The process of updating one of the layers of your phone with a new layer Bricked: This is what happens when flashing goes wrong. Your phone is now good for only one thing… stopping paper blowing away in a windy place. You can “cook” you own ROM using one of the many good “ROM Kitchens” or you can use a ROM built and tested by someone else. I have cooked my own ROM before, and while the tutorials are good, it is a lot of hassle. You can only Flash new ROM’s that are specifically for your phone only so find a ROM for your phone and XDA Developers is the best place to look. It has a forum based structure and you can find your phone quite easily. XDA Developer Forum Installing a new ROM does have its risks. In the past there have been stories about phones being “bricked” but I have not heard of a bricked phone for quite some years. if you follow the instructions carefully you should not have any problems. note: Most of the tools are written by people for whom English is not their first language to you will need concentrate hard to understand some of the instructions. Have you ever read a manual that was just literally translated from another language? Enough said… There are a number of layers on your phone that you will need to know about: SPL: This is the lowest level, like a BIOS on a PC and is the Operating Systems gateway to the hardware Radio: I think of this as the hardware drivers, and you will need a different Radio for CDMA than GSM networks ROM: This is like your Windows CD, but it is stored internally to the Phone. Flashing your phone consists of replacing one Image with another and then wiping your phone and automatically reinstall from the Image. Sometimes when you download an Image wither it is for a Radio or for ROM you only get a file called *.nbh. What do you do with this? Well you need an RUU application to push that Image to your phone. The RUU’s are different per phone, but there is a CustomRUU for the HD2 that will update your phone with any *.nbh placed in the same directory. Download and Instructions for CustomRUU #1 Flash HardSPL An SPL is kind of like a BIOS, and the default one has checks to make sure that you are only installing a signed ROM. This would prevent you from installing one that comes from any other source but the vendor. NOTE: Installing a HARD SPL invalidates your warranty so remember to Flash your phone with a “stock” vendor ROM before trying to send your phone in for repairs. Is the warranty reinstated when you go back to a stock ROM? I don’t know… Updating your SPL to a HardSPL effectively unlocks your phone so you can install anything you like. I would recommend the HardSPL2. Download and Instructions for HardSPL2 #2 Task29 One of the problems that has been seen on the HD2 when flashing new ROM’s is that things are left over from the old ROM. For a while the recommendation was to Flash a stock ROM first, but some clever cookies have come up with “Task29” which formats your phone first. After running this your phone will be blank and will only boot to the white HTC logo and no further. You should follow the instructions and reboot (remove battery) and hold down the “volume down” button while turning you HD2 on to enter the bootloader. From here you can run CustomRUU once the USB message appears. Download and Instructions for Task29 #2 Flash Radio You may need to play around with this one, there is no good and bad version and the latest is not always the best.
