  • Firefox really slows down my computer

    I love Firefox; it has a special place in my heart. However, using the default Firefox in Ubuntu eventually causes my computer to freeze and crash. Nothing more to the problem, just the performance of Firefox really sucks, therefor causing a system-wide freeze. How do I know this? I use Google Chrome mostly, and other programs. None of them ever made my computer freeze. Is it an Update problem? If so, can I install a different version of Firefox from Mozilla.com? What's the deal here?

  • Bouncing ball slowing down over time

    I use the unreal engine 4 to bounce a ball off of walls in a 2D space, but over time the ball gets slower and slower. Movement happens in the tick function of the ball FVector location = GetActorLocation(); location.X += this->Velocity.X * DeltaSeconds; location.Y += this->Velocity.Y * DeltaSeconds; SetActorLocation(location, true); When a wall gets hit I get a Hit Event with the normal of the collision. This is how I calculate the new velocity of the ball: FVector2D V = this->Velocity; FVector2D N = FVector2D(HitNormal.X, HitNormal.Y); FVector2D newVelocity = -2 * (V.X * N.X + V.Y * N.Y) * N + V; this->Velocity = newVelocity; Over time, the more the ball bounced around, the velocity gets smaller and smaller. How do I prevent speed loss when bouncing off walls like that? It's supposed to be a perfect bounce without friction or anything.

  • Rendering scaled-down card images

    I have high-quality SVG card images, but they drastically lose their quality when I downsize them. I have tried two ways of rendering cards (using Inkscape and Imagemagics): 1) Render SVG to high-res PNG and resize it then: inkscape -D --export-png=QS1024.png --export-width=1024 QS.svg convert QS1024.png -filter Lanczos -sampling-factor 1x1 -resize 71x QS71.png 2) Render SVG to image of proper size at once: inkscape -D --export-png=QS71.png --export-width=71 QS.svg Both approaches generate blurry card images, which looks even worse than old Windows cards. What are the best way to generate smaller card images from SVG sources and not to loose their quality a lot? UPDATE: I am using Inkscape to render SVG - PNG and ImageMagick then to downsize PNG. I've tried using convert -resize with couple of filters (Lanczos/Mitchell/etc), but result was pretty much the same. Original: 71x raster:

    This question already has an answer here: How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop? 5 answers Firstly, we are a small entrepreneurial team of 3 persons and I am more like an amateur webmaster of the company's website as we cannot really afford a technical guy/department right now. A few weeks earlier, our website traffic and rankings for most keywords decreased overnight. I did a lot of reading henceforth and learned about Penguin 2.1 which people said is the reason for the drop. Something like this had never happened before. Now, I have gone through the entire Google webmaster help section. It says there that if a manual penalty is taken against us, we would notice a message in Manual Actions page. So far, we haven't received any notice from Google for web spam. Some SEO guys I contacted said they found spam links in our backlink profile. I do believe I had mistakenly purchased a cheap link/SEO scheme when I was yet very new to SEO. This was more than a year back but since then we have been legitimate. Moreover, how do I find out which is a spam link and which is not? Our content is all original, refreshing and the best you will find in our niche. We also have a blog but on a different domain (wordpress.com) from where we send out anchored links to our business website. Is this a good thing to do? Now, how should we proceed and recover our traffic/rankings. I tried searching in webmasters for a way to reach google and ask them why the traffic has decreased suddenly, but I couldn't find a contact form or something. Can someone please go through our website and help in making things more clear regarding the reason for the drop, along with a solution.     I was at school SSHing to my homebox. All of a sudden, my connection was closed. Attempting to reconnect failed. When I returned home, I discovered that my computer was off. Nobody was at my house and I am sure that I did not have a power outage. How can I figure out how or why my computer shut off? Is there some log in /var/log that could point me in the right direction? Should there be a core dump somewhere that I should find? If so, how do I use core dumps?

  • Passing an objects rotation down through its children

    In my topdown 2d game you have a player with a sword, like an old Zelda game. The sword is a seperate entity, and its collision box "rotates" around the player like an orbit, but always follows the player wherever he goes. The player and sword both have a vector2 heading. The sword is a weapon object that is attached to the character. In order to allow swinging in a direction, I have the following property inside sword (RotateCopy returns a copy of the mHeading after rotation) public Vector2 Heading { get { return mHeading.RotateCopy(mOwner.Rotation); } } This seems a bit messy to me, and slower than it could be. Is there a better way to "translate" the base/owner component rotations through to whatever component I am using, like this sword? Would using a rotation MATRIX be better? (Curretnly rotates by sin/cos) If so, how can I "add" up the matrices? Thank you.

  • My cpus are powered down periodically

    I post here because I am using Ubuntu but this is probably an hardware problem. Since I bought my new setup with AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor and asus m4a89td pro/usb3 motherboard with ecc ram I have stuttering on videos. I was using ubuntu 11.10 now ubuntu 12.10.     I recently switched to Ubuntu. I've been having a lot of internet troubles ever since. I used Windows 7 before. I've had trouble loading web pages, and it would take a solid minute or two to even start displaying anything. Why is this? How can I fix this?   • XNA 2D Top Down game - FOREACH didn't work for checking Enemy and Switch-Tile

    Here is the gameplay. There is three condition. The player step on a Switch-Tile and it became false. 1) When the Enemy step on it (trapped) AND the player step on it too, the Enemy will be destroyed. 2) But when the Enemy step on it AND the player DIDN'T step on it too, the Enemy will be escaped. 3) If the Switch-Tile condition is true then nothing happened. The effect is activated when the Switch tile is false (player step on the Switch-Tile). Because there are a lot of Enemy and a lot of Switch-Tile, I have to use foreach loop. The problem is after the Enemy is ESCAPED (case 2) and step on another Switch-Tile again, nothing happened to the enemy! I didn't know what's wrong. The effect should be the same, but the Enemy pass the Switch tile like nothing happened (They should be trapped) Can someone tell me what's wrong?   • Power manager keeps shutting down the display

    I'm probably missing something here. I'm using the default Ubuntu power manger, I set it up like this: On AC: no screen dimming when idle, never put computer to sleep, never put display to sleep. On battery: I kept the default settings. Still, Ubuntu does whatever it likes, and after 15 min it puts the display to sleep. Does anyone have the same problem and found a way to solve it? I'm using an Eee PC with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop.

Any ideas/code snippets?

  • How do you keep down your urge to learn many things [closed]

    One of the difficulties i have is to lower my urge to learn new things (Languages, tools, frameworks etc.). I know it's good to stay the bleeding edge, but at the same time i want to learn things properly. I really see that i need to strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and knowing things properly. For example: Before choosing Arch (Desktop), Ubuntu(Server) and Knoppix(Portable) -- depending on situation -- as favourite distributions. Virtually i have tried all popular linux distributions. You name any popular linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, Arch, Suse, Knoppix, Slax, Slackware) i have tried it for some time. In fact i have spent few years experimenting the operating systems. Before choosing Python, Javascript (nodejs). I have tried all the languages i cameacross Scala, Haskell, Erlang, Ruby, Python, Perl, Scheme. Same applies for database. All popular db RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres, SQLite[Favourite] etc) and NoSQL (Mongo, Couch, Neo4j etc.). Advantages i see: We get a overall picture of the technologies/tools/languages. It's useful to select the right tool for the job. We develop a taste and choose the One we like. Disadvantages: I feel that i spend somuch time and see a need to strike a balance. In summary, for e.g. If i see a blog post in HackerNews about CofeeScript i will try it out irrespective of what i am currently learning (Say Haskell). I switch back to learning Haskell, then again i see DART i check it out. And this continues.. Effectively i take more time to learn Haskell, but learnt about other new stuff on the way. The quetion i have is how do you strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and learning properly.
