  • Using static in PHP

    - by nischayn22
I have a few functions in PHP that read data from functions in a class readUsername(int userId){ $reader = getReader(); return $reader->getname(userId); } readUserAddress(){ $reader = getReader(); return $reader->getaddress(userId); } All these make a call to getReader() { require_once("Reader.php"); static $reader = new Reader(); return $reader; } An overview of Reader class Reader{ getname(int id) { //if in-memory cache exists for this id return that //else get from db and cache it } getaddress(int id) { $this->getname(int id); //get address from name here } /*Other stuff*/ } Why is class Reader needed The Reader class does some in-memory caching of user details. So, I need only one object of class Reader and it will cache the user details instead of making multiple db calls. I am using static so that it the object gets created only once. Is this the right approach or should I do something else?

  • Rewritten NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial

    - by Geertjan
The next tutorial that has been thoroughly restructured and rewritten is: NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial Originally written by Rich Unger, it was one of the very first NetBeans Platform tutorials that ever existed. In this particular rewrite, the entire structure of the tutorial has changed, in an attempt to make the flow more "bite size", rather than a big lump. Also, thanks to recent NetBeans Platform changes, there are no Bundle files anymore, all Strings are declared via @Messages annotations. Theoretically, the browser in the application could be a JavaFX WebView, though the browser part of the application isn't a central theme of the tutorial, hence only a reference is made to the JavaFX alternative. Here's what it looks like: Comments to the NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial are, as always, very welcome.

  • XML Reader threw Object Null exception, but node exists(?!)

    - by Capt.Morgan
I am hoping someone could enlighten me as to why I am getting the annoying - "xml object reference not set to an instance .." error. The elements (nodes?) I am looking for seem to exist and I have not misspelled it either :[ I might be doing something stupid here, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated. My Code: private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { XmlDocument reader = new XmlDocument(); reader.Load("Kotaku - powered by FeedBurner.xml"); XmlNodeList titles = reader.GetElementsByTagName("title"); XmlNodeList dates = reader.GetElementsByTagName("pubDate"); XmlNodeList descriptions = reader.GetElementsByTagName("description"); XmlNodeList links = reader.GetElementsByTagName("link"); for (int i = 0; i < titles.Count; i++) { textBox1.AppendText(Environment.NewLine + titles[i].InnerText); textBox1.AppendText(Environment.NewLine + descriptions[i].InnerText); //<<-- Throws Object Ref Null Exception textBox1.AppendText(Environment.NewLine + links[i].InnerText); textBox1.AppendText(Environment.NewLine + dates[i].InnerText); //<<-- Throws Object Ref Null Exception } } The XML I am using is a saved XML page from: http://feeds.gawker.com/kotaku/full The way I am working on it now is as follows: I have saved the page from the above link (which is an XML page) and put it next to my EXE for easier access. Then I run the code.

  • SQL Server replication - Log Reader Agent Read Latency Issue, Please help

    - by envykok
Hi all, I am facing one transactional replication delay issue on log reader agent. The log reader output is : ********* STATISTICS SINCE AGENT STARTED ************** 02-28-2011 20:12:08 Execution time (ms): 304141 Work time (ms): 304016 Distribute Repl Cmds Time(ms): 303764 Fetch time(ms): 300813 Repldone time(ms): 1826 Write time(ms): 5319 Num Trans: 15500 Num Trans/Sec: 50.984159 Num Cmds: 191639 Num Cmds/Sec: 630.358271 It seems Log Reader Reader-Thread Latency, and I also run 'sp_replcounters' and see more than 20,000 sec replication latency and keep on increasing. I used SQL profiler to monitor sp_replcmds and found sp_replcmds execution time was 11 sec to 15 sec Is it there any way to optimize to make Log Reader read faster from transaction log??? • Window 7 hangs on using Adobe Reader

    - by SahilMahajanMj
Window 7 often hangs when i open some pdf file with Adobe Reader. First of all, Adobe Reader crashes and as soon as it stops, the window hangs and after few seconds, it displays a message quoting "Dumping Physical Memory" in a typical Windows98 manner and then the system reboots. This problem persists each time i use Adobe Reader. However, i have installed Foxit Reader to view Pdf files. But there are some issues with that also. As sometimes i have editable files, which could be done in Adobe Reader's newest version only. Suggestions on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

  • Are technical books easy to read on the Kindle (or other small screens) [closed]

    - by Peter Recore
Possible Duplicate: eBook editions of programming books I am considering getting a kindle or other e reader. (Kindle is my top choice for the eink vs lcd factor) I have been able to try reading fiction on a Kindle, and it seemed pretty nice, even with the small screen. However, most books I buy are actually technical books, which tend to have figures, code samples, and other odd things. How well do the various ereaders handle books like this? In particular, does the kindle render code samples or figures in an easy to read way?

  • Beginners Tips To Learn Vim

    - by Nathan Campos
I'm the type of developer that only uses GUI fully-featured programmer editor, when I'm at Windows I use Notepad++, at my Mac I use TextMate and at Linux I use GEdit, but now I'm starting to develop inside my Linux server, which doesn't have any window manager installed and I saw this as a beautiful time to learn how to use Vim, which I always had problems to understand, I can't even open a file to edit at Vim, so I want to know: Which is the best eBook for a very beginner on this editor to learn how to use it? I really loved Vim after I saw all the awesome things that you can do with it and this is the perfect moment to learn how to use it. PS: It would be a lot better if it has a Kindle or ePub version

  • OpenGL Beginner question

    - by nobby
I'm new to OpenGL programming, but I can't find a good book to read or a tutorial, I've tried reading through the superbible or whatever its name is but it's kind of complicated to me. The tutorial at http://duriansoftware.com/joe/An-intro-to-modern-OpenGL.-Chapter-2.3:-Rendering.html is pretty ok but it doesn't cover what I need mostly, which is opengl math etc (such as projection matrix, view matrix, and so on). I'm fairly OK at C(++) (3+ years experience, I don't know if you would call that "good") What i basically want to do with OpenGL is, make a simple game (prefer 2D as a start and not 3D). Please suggest a good EBook to read and learn from.

  • Why does Google Reader use up so much memory?

    - by Ivo
I'm running the dev version of Chrome and just found out I could see the memory usage of every tab (press shift + ESC to find out yourself). Turns out the Shockwave Flash plugin uses 240 MB of memory and 27% of CPU while having open Google Reader. Killing this page brings it down to 50 MB. I reckon it builts up after reading through about 100 feeds. So my question is: why does it take up so much memory and what should I do to diminish it? Why I care? I often don't restart my browser (or laptop for that matter) and keep the Google Reader tab open for long periods of time. The memory does start to add up that way. Plus I have the feeling, perhaps incorrect, that it slows things down as well looking at the CPU usage. Side note: using Chrome 4 on Windows 7 (32 bit)

  • Clarity Comics Comic Reader for Windows Phone 7

Weve been really busy building all sorts custom Windows Phone 7 goodies lately.  One of the experiences weve been working on recently is a comic book reader  for WP7.  Here at Clarity we have particular individuals that are nuts about comics and codingso it was a no-brainer to knock this thing out.  Under the Covers There are a couple of components to this application that made it come together quickly.  First, as you know, WP7 runs Silverlight so we were able to leverage a bunch of silverlight assets we had hanging around from previous projects.  We were shocked to see the 80% code reuse claim was true!  Second, the application was built on the newly created Clarity Phone Framework (CP7).  This framework provides a platform that we can leverage to quickly wire up applications and get them out the door.  The framework includes gesture support, mapping controls, data visualization,  a special mvvm architecture for the phone, navigation animations, and a handful of other controls weve cooked up in our labslike voice recognition support.  (additional posts on the framework are coming soon) Third, the reading experience of the comic reader is driven by Deep Zoom.  We were pleasantly surprised to see that the windows phone 7 sdk worked nicely with Deep Zoom and the Deep Zoom composer.  We did have to add some hooks in there to get the gestures to work, but nothing too deep (no pun intended).  Unfortunately we cant release the code for this one just yet.  But rest-assured, there will be plenty more Windows Phone 7 and Silverlight goodies to come. Cheers!Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • Kingston SD reader not working for USB3

  • Oracle Virtual Desktop Client with USB smart card reader

    - by wim.coekaerts
I have my Sun Ray thin client at home which I use religiously, I use a Sun Ray 3i at work as my main desktop and just always take my smart card home and happily continue with the hot desking feature. We released a software version of the Sun Ray client called Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC). There is a version for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. I have a minimac at home and I installed OVDC on it, which of course works great but since I like to re-connect to my session that I use at work, I wanted to try out the external usb smart card reader feature. I ordered a cute, low cost device online and tried it out. As expected, it worked out of the box without -any- configuration. I took the device, plugged it into my minimac, started OVDC, plugged in my smartcard and I got the password screen (screensaver) to get into my sun ray session on my server at work. Nothing new here, this is a feature that's been in the product but I had never tried it before and it works out of the box and is super easy and I just felt like sharing :-) Here are a few pictures : (1) login screen (2) smart cardreader without card (3) password screen (4) smart card reader with card

  • Save Web Articles to Read Later with Instapaper

    - by Mysticgeek
Have you ever come across a bunch of great articles that you want to read online, but just don’t have the time? Today we take a look at an online service that allows you to read your articles later, either online, or on an iPhone, or eReader. Instapaper Instapaper is an awesome tool that allows you to save web pages so you can read them at a later time. Not only does it save an online article to read later, but also gives you several choices for where you want to read it. Sign up for a free account, and drag the “Read Later” bookmarklet to the bookmarks bar in your browser. To save a page you’ll need to be logged into your account. When you’re at a page that you can’t read right away, just click on the Read Later button in the bookmarks bar. After clicking the Read Later button, a small message is displayed indicating that the page has been saved to the Instapaper site. Save as many pages as you want, and when you’re ready to read them, go to the Instapaper site and you’ll see a list of the articles you saved. You can click on the link to go directly to the saved oage, read it as text (leaving out a bunch of images), or archive the article for later. One of the really appealing beta features is you can save the article in .mobi format for a Kindle, or ePub format for other eReaders such a the Sony Reader. Another neat feature is the “Instapaper Text” bookmarklet that lets you view an article on a graphics heavy page with only text, but doesn’t save it to your account. Before After There are also other cool features such as iPhone Apps, Kindle automatic wireless delivery, send items to Google Reader, and more. • How do I sort feeds returned from Google Reader?

    - by Ed Marty
When I query Google Reader for the list of subscriptions for a user, it seems to be returned in a fixed order, no matter what the order is as shown at google.com/reader. (see http://www.google.com/reader/api/0/subscription/list for the list I'm talking about) Each subscription returns a 'sortid', which Google Reader uses when the user rearranges subscriptions, by sending back a concatenation of all sortids in the new order after rearranging is finished. However, that sortid never changes. So my question is this: How do I actually get the order the subscriptions are supposed to be in? I've been using http://code.google.com/p/pyrfeed/wiki/GoogleReaderAPI as a reference, but it is lacking in this department, and I haven't found anything anywhere else either.
