  • Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

    - by Jichao
    The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box. Here are the tail of files under /var/log/ tail X.org.log [ 3263.348] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/evdev_drv.so [ 3263.348] (**) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: always reports core events [ 3263.348] (**) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: Device: "/dev/input/event5" [ 3263.348] (--) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: Found keys [ 3263.348] (II) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: Configuring as keyboard [ 3263.348] (**) Option "config_info" "udev:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input29/event5" [ 3263.348] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Dell Dell USB Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD) [ 3263.348] (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev" [ 3263.348] (**) Option "xkb_model" "pc105" [ 3263.348] (**) Option "xkb_layout" "us" kern.log Mar 20 09:32:58 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3182.701247] input: Dell Dell USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input27 Mar 20 09:32:58 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3182.701392] generic-usb 0003:413C:2003.0018: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Dell Dell USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.4/input0 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.642572] usb 2-1.3: new low speed USB device number 17 using ehci_hcd Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.741892] input: Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.3/2-1.3:1.0/input/input28 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.742080] generic-usb 0003:045E:0047.0019: input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM)] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.3/input0 Mar 20 09:33:27 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.473901] usb 2-1.3: USB disconnect, device number 17 Mar 20 09:33:28 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.702031] usb 2-1.4: USB disconnect, device number 16 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.022655] usb 2-1.4: new low speed USB device number 18 using ehci_hcd Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124278] input: Dell Dell USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input29 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124423] generic-usb 0003:413C:2003.001A: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Dell Dell USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.4/input0 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.741892] input: Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.3/2-1.3:1.0/input/input28 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.742080] generic-usb 0003:045E:0047.0019: input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM)] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.3/input0 syslog Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 17 was not an MTP device Mar 20 09:33:27 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.473901] usb 2-1.3: USB disconnect, device number 17 Mar 20 09:33:28 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.702031] usb 2-1.4: USB disconnect, device number 16 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.022655] usb 2-1.4: new low speed USB device number 18 using ehci_hcd Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 18: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4" Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 18 was not an MTP device Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124278] input: Dell Dell USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input29 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124423] generic-usb 0003:413C:2003.001A: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Dell Dell USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.4/input0 auth.log Mar 20 09:18:52 jichao-MS-730 lightdm: pam_ck_connector(lightdm-autologin:session): nox11 mode, ignoring PAM_TTY :0 Mar 20 09:18:53 jichao-MS-730 lightdm: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "jichao" Mar 20 09:18:53 jichao-MS-730 dbus[835]: [system] Rejected send message, 2 matched rules; • Why don't %MEM values add up to mem in top?

    - by ben
    I'm currently debugging performance issues with my VPS and for that I'm trying to understand which of the processes eat the most memory. Reading top, here's what I get: Mem: 366544k total, 321396k used, 45148k free, 380k buffers Swap: 1048572k total, 592388k used, 456184k free, 7756k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 12339 ruby 20 0 844m 74m 2440 S 0 20.8 0:24.84 ruby 12363 ruby 20 0 844m 73m 1576 S 0 20.6 0:00.26 ruby 21117 ruby 20 0 171m 33m 1792 S 0 9.3 2:03.98 ruby 11846 ruby 20 0 858m 21m 1820 S 0 6.0 0:09.15 ruby 21277 ruby 20 0 219m 11m 1648 S 0 3.2 2:00.98 ruby 792 root 20 0 266m 10m 1024 S 0 3.0 1:40.06 ruby 532 mysql 20 0 234m 4760 1040 S 0 1.3 0:41.58 mysqld 793 root 20 0 250m 4616 984 S 0 1.3 1:20.55 ruby 586 root 20 0 156m 4532 848 S 0 1.2 6:17.10 god 12315 ruby 20 0 175m 2412 1900 S 0 0.7 0:07.55 ruby 3844 root 20 0 44036 2132 1028 S 0 0.6 1:08.22 ruby 10939 ruby 20 0 179m 1884 1724 S 0 0.5 0:08.33 ruby 4660 ruby 20 0 229m 1592 1440 S 0 0.4 2:55.46 ruby 3879 nobody 20 0 37428 964 520 S 0 0.3 0:01.99 nginx As you can see my memory is about 90% used (which is my issue) but when you add up the %MEM values, it goes to about 50-60% only. Same thing, RES doesn't add up to ~350mb. Why? Am I misunderstanding their meaning? Thanks

  • high load average, high wait, dmesg raid error messages (debian nfs server)

    - by John Stumbles
Debian 6 on HP proliant (2 CPU) with raid (2*1.5T RAID1 + 2*2T RAID1 joined RAID0 to make 3.5T) running mainly nfs & imapd (plus samba for windows share & local www for previewing web pages); with local ubuntu desktop client mounting $HOME, laptops accessing imap & odd files (e.g. videos) via nfs/smb; boxes connected 100baseT or wifi via home router/switch uname -a Linux prole 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Wed Jan 11 12:29:30 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux Setup has been working for months but prone to intermittently going very slow (user experience on desktop mounting $HOME from server, or laptop playing videos) and now consistently so bad I've had to delve into it to try to find what's wrong(!) (I'm guessing I could buy a larger drive if the price is right: I'm thinking that one day I'll need to grow the size of the array and that would be one less drive to replace with a larger one) then use mdadm to fail out the existing sdc, remove it and fit the new drive fdisk the new drive with the same size partition for the array as the old one had use mdadm to add the new drive into the array that sound OK?

  • How to wire 20 computers and 20 phones and 1 server into LAN?

    - by John Smith
I have currently 3 switches Two Netgear JFS524 with 24 slots, One Belkin with 16 slots. Server DSL Internet Router. Main question is how to connect switches together, two Netgear's are next to each other, yet one is about 100 feet away and holds about 5 computer and 5 phones. If i connect them with only 1 wire will that limit bandwidth? e.g. all 23 computers will be limited to speed of one CAT5e cable? If i connect switches with 2 cables will this give speed boost? What's the ideal scenario should i just move the third switch next to other two? Will the speed of computer connected to white switch be same as computer connected to top switch? Will moving white switch right next top switch and having 16 wires comming 100 feet instead of 1 wire comming 100 feet make it faster? EDIT 1: I actually have NETGEAR ProSafe GS105 Gigabit switch its only has 4 ports in it though, you think i can have use of it in current setup? Like connect all 3 switches and server into it and keep internet router and phone server on one of the slower switches EDIT 2: Everyone mention gigabit switches, but will they do any difference with 10/100 network cards? I then have to use gigabit cards in every computer too? I could in server perhaps, but users will be 10/100

  • Web based console connections not working in Windows 7 posted: Jan 20, 2010 8:55 AM

    - by nmeth
For slightly complicated reasons we tend to give people console access to VMs via the webui. This has worked fine in the past, however when the users update their client machines to Windows 7 (or Vista, I am told, although I have not tested that), then the console fails to work. On IE8, having allowed the ActiveX control, the tab causes a "Internet Explorer has stopped working" dialog. On Firefox 3.5 , once the plugin has been installed, using the console causes the browser to crash. I've updated to the most recent VC 2.5 release, and ESX 3.5u5. Anyone else seeing this? Any clues how to get round it (other than using the fat client). Nigel.

And these are the commands I ran. rvmsudo gem install passenger rvmsudo passenger-install-apache2-module But I keep getting the following errors: [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.227790 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_LOCK_DIR} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.227933 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_PID_FILE} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.227969 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_RUN_USER} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.227991 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_RUN_GROUP} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.228026 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_LOG_DIR} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.231737 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095:tid 3074562624] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_RUN_DIR} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.232760 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095:tid 3074562624] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_LOG_DIR} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.233043 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095:tid 3074562624] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_LOG_DIR} is not defined [Fri Oct 18 15:52:13.233078 2013] [core:warn] [pid 13095:tid 3074562624] AH00111: Config variable ${APACHE_LOG_DIR} is not defined AH00526: Syntax error on line 74 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Invalid Mutex directory in argument file:${APACHE_LOCK_DIR} -------------------------------------------- WARNING: Apache doesn't seem to be compiled with the 'prefork', 'worker' or 'event' MPM Phusion Passenger has only been tested on Apache with the 'prefork', the 'worker' and the 'event' MPM. And how do I solve the above errors (warnings, really, but to be safe, I'd like to not have any warnings)? Thanks.

Nigel.

  • Laptop turns off after 20 minutes of use

    - by Christoph
My laptop a sony vaio VGN-NW11S http://www.trustedreviews.com/Sony-VAIO-VGN-NW11S-S---15-5in-Laptop_Laptop_review. Everytime i turn it on, in safe mode or not, if i try to open an application i.e. run a process such as google chrome or event viewer, defrag, virus scan, it completely turns off without warning, nor giving a trace of events the next time I switch it on. Apart from that, I had worries it might be my battery or power supply but I dont think it is that, I took the laptop apart cleaning fans etc. and have ordered some cpu paste as I checked to see the condition of the processor. I will post to see if re-applying the paste works. One more thing, when the heavy processes kick in, the fan starts to make a lot of noise, maybe trying to cool down the CPU? Any ideas on what else it could be and what I could do to test what is wrong?

    - by user1731110
In my windows 7 home premium, several of my application crashes after some minutes even wehn I am not touching system. For example I have outlook 2007, that works fine, but suddenly crashes. The same about visual studio 2012. It is also crashes after some minute no matter if I am working on a project or I am not touching it. the same behaviour is there, for other applications (skype, oovoo and ...). I use Microsoft security essential and there is no virus on my system. I also checked my system with Sophos anti root kit and there is no root kit there. What would be the problem?

  • Twitter Favorites and more than 20

    - by danit
Im using curl to fetch my Twitter favorites: <?php $username = "bob"; $password = "password"; $twitterHost = "http://twitter.com/favorites.xml"; $curl; $curl = curl_init(); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, 2); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_HTTPAUTH, CURLAUTH_BASIC); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_USERPWD, "$username:$password"); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_HTTP_VERSION, CURL_HTTP_VERSION_1_1); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_URL, $twitterHost); $result = curl_exec($curl); curl_close($curl); header('Content-Type: application/xml; charset=ISO-8859-1'); print $result; ?> However this only fetches the last 20 favorites, not all of them. If i amend this line: $twitterHost = "http://twitter.com/favorites.xml"; And change it to: $twitterHost = "http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=2"; I can get the next set of 20 favorites. There doesnt appear to be anyway, using the Twitter API, to find out how many pages of favorites there are. As such can anyone suggest the best way to get all favorites? Or if this is not possible, get all the Tweets for a date range?

  • Zend, slow load, "waiting for response" for 20-80 seconds on local site

    - by Tony C.
So I have several sites running under the same zend setup. All of the sites run pretty normally except one. Upon loading or reloading this one site, reguardless of which page your on (excluding the 404 page explanation later...) you get a serious pause before any content begins to download. Using firebugs net panel you can see that the first request which is www.(siteaddress).com.local you see a "waiting for response" bar (purple) that is going for anywhere from 20 to sometimes 80+ seconds and this isn't on a dev site, this is on a local site under localhost. What I've managed to figure out so far is that all the pages do this except my 404 page. The reason the 404 page doesn't succumb to this is because it uses a seperate controller (the error controller) and therefore bypasses much of the controller and functions the other parts of the site use. Using exit statements I've manged to figure out that the problem happens somewhere between my post dispatch and my main (top most) controllers Init function. If i exit in the main controllers init the page loads (then exits instantly, no wait). If i do the same in the pre or post dispatch the page waits the 20-80 seconds then exits. Is there a diagram or explanation somewhere or a way for me to find out what events fire inbetween the post dispatch and the main controllers init function? Or does anyone have any clue what might cause this? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

  • spaces or %20 in links turn into + signs when page is sent as an email

    - by Obay
I am creating a web app that accepts input of news items (title, article, url). It has a page news.php which creates a summary of all news items inputted for specified dates, like so: News 4/25/2010 Title 1 [URL 1] Article 1 Title 2 [URL 2] Article 2 and so on... I have two other pages, namely preview.php and send.php , both of which call news.php through a file_get_contents() call. Everything works fine except when the URL contains spaces. During Preview, the urls get opened (FF: spaces are spaces, Chrome: spaces are %20). However, during Send, when received as emails, the urls don't get opened, because the spaces are converted into + signs. For example: 1. Preview in FF: http://www.example.com/this is the link.html 2. Preview in Chrome: http://www.example.com/this%20is%20the%20link.html 3. Viewed as email in both browsers: http://www.example.com/this+is+the+link.html Only #3 doesn't work (link doesn't get opened). Why are the spaces in the urls correct (spaces or %20) when previewed, but incorrect (+) when received in the emails, when in fact, the same page is generated by the same news.php? Any help appreciated :)

  • Why is my CPU being used while doing nothing?

    - by Jop
I have installed Ubuntu GNOME in BIOS mode on my MacBook (BIOS mode so that the proprietary NVIDIA drivers work. I need them for gaming.). For some reason, a lot of CPU is being used while not really doing anything. It swings between 20-30% on both cores, usually. But when I look at the list of processes and sort by CPU usage, I do not see anything special. No processes intensively doing anything. How can I fix this? • Android: OutOfMemoryError while uploading video...

    - by AP257
    Hi all, I have the same problem as described here, but I will supply a few more details. While trying to upload a video in Android, I'm reading it into memory, and if the video is large I get an OutOfMemoryError. Here's my code: // get bytestream to upload videoByteArray = getBytesFromFile(cR, fileUriString); public static byte[] getBytesFromFile(ContentResolver cR, String fileUriString) throws IOException { Uri tempuri = Uri.parse(fileUriString); InputStream is = cR.openInputStream(tempuri); byte[] b3 = readBytes(is); is.close(); return b3; } public static byte[] readBytes(InputStream inputStream) throws IOException { ByteArrayOutputStream byteBuffer = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); // this is storage overwritten on each iteration with bytes int bufferSize = 1024; byte[] buffer = new byte[bufferSize]; int len = 0; while ((len = inputStream.read(buffer)) != -1) { byteBuffer.write(buffer, 0, len); } return byteBuffer.toByteArray(); } And here's the traceback (the error is thrown on the byteBuffer.write(buffer, 0, len) line): 04-08 11:56:20.456: ERROR/dalvikvm-heap(6088): Out of memory on a 16775184-byte allocation. 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): "IntentService[UploadService]" prio=5 tid=17 RUNNABLE 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): | group="main" sCount=0 dsCount=0 s=N obj=0x449a3cf0 self=0x38d410 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): | sysTid=6119 nice=0 sched=0/0 cgrp=default handle=4010416 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream.expand(ByteArrayOutputStream.java:~93) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream.write(ByteArrayOutputStream.java:218) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.readBytes(UploadService.java:199) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.getBytesFromFile(UploadService.java:182) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.doUploadinBackground(UploadService.java:118) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.onHandleIntent(UploadService.java:85) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at android.app.IntentService$ServiceHandler.handleMessage(IntentService.java:30) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 04-08 11:56:20.456: INFO/dalvikvm(6088): at android.os.HandlerThread.run(HandlerThread.java:60) 04-08 11:56:20.467: WARN/dalvikvm(6088): threadid=17: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4001b180) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): Uncaught handler: thread IntentService[UploadService] exiting due to uncaught exception 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): java.lang.OutOfMemoryError 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream.expand(ByteArrayOutputStream.java:93) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream.write(ByteArrayOutputStream.java:218) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.readBytes(UploadService.java:199) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.getBytesFromFile(UploadService.java:182) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.doUploadinBackground(UploadService.java:118) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at com.android.election2010.UploadService.onHandleIntent(UploadService.java:85) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at android.app.IntentService$ServiceHandler.handleMessage(IntentService.java:30) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 04-08 11:56:20.467: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(6088): at android.os.HandlerThread.run(HandlerThread.java:60) 04-08 11:56:20.496: INFO/Process(4657): Sending signal. PID: 6088 SIG: 3 I guess that as @DroidIn suggests, I need to upload it in chunks. But (newbie question alert) does that mean that I should make multiple PostMethod requests, and glue the file together at the server end? Or can I load the bytestream into memory in chunks, and glue it together in the Android code? If anyone could give me a clue as to the best approach, I would be very grateful.
