  • Are memory leaks ever ok?

    - by Imbue
Is it ever acceptable to have a memory leak in your C or C++ application? What if you allocate some memory and use it until the very last line of code in your application (for example, a global object's deconstructor)? As long as the memory consumption doesn't grow over time, is it OK to trust the OS to free your memory for you when your application terminates (on Windows, Mac, and Linux)? Would you even consider this a real memory leak if the memory was being used continuously until it was freed by the OS. What if a third party library forced this situation on you? Would refuse to use that third party library no matter how great it otherwise might be? I only see one practical disadvantage, and that is that these benign leaks will show up with memory leak detection tools as false positives.

  • How does C free() work?

    - by slee
    #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int * alloc() { int *p = (int *)calloc(5,4); printf("%d\n",p); return p; } int main() { int *p = alloc(); free(p); printf("%d\n",p); p[0] = 1; p[1] = 2; printf("%d %d\n",p[0],p[1]); } As to the code segment, I allocate 5 ints,first. And then I free the memory. When I printf p, why does p sill have a value same to the memory address allocated first? And I also can assign value to p[0] and p[1]. Does this mean free() do nothing? Once I allocate memory, I can use later though I have freed it.

  • Memory leak in Mozilla when unloading stylesheets

    - by KaptajnKold
I'm working with Mozilla v1.7.12 on a constrained device (a Motorola set-top box) trying to resolve some memory leaks. When I dynamically load a stylesheet which refers to some large images, I can see that the amount of consumed memory increases in correspondance with the size of the images. This is what I would expect. Then, when I remove the stylesheet from the DOM, I would expect the memory to be freed. However, this does not happen. This is a problem, because the web application I'm working on needs to be able to dynamically load and and unload stylesheets potentially many times in the lifetime of the page. My question therefore is this: Is what I'm seeing expected behavior or is it a known bug? Is there a way to work around this? I should point out that I've set the expires header to -1 on all the images in the stylesheet.

  • Boost Shared Pointer: Simultaneous Read Access Across Multiple Threads

    - by Nikhil
I have a thread A which allocates memory and assigns it to a shared pointer. Then this thread spawns 3 other threads X, Y and Z and passes a copy of the shared pointer to each. When X, Y and Z go out of scope, the memory is freed. But is there a possibility that 2 threads X, Y go out of scope at the exact same point in time and there is a race condition on reference count so instead of decrementing it by 2, it only gets decremented once. So, now the reference count newer drops to 0, so there is a memory leak. Note that, X, Y and Z are only reading the memory. Not writing or resetting the shared pointer. To cut a long story short, can there be a race condition on the reference count and can that lead to memory leaks?

  • Is there an autorelease pool in class methods?

    - by mystify
I have an class method which generates an UIView, like this: + (UIImage*)imageWithFileName:(NSString*)imgFile { UIImage *img = nil; NSBundle *appBundle = [NSBundle mainBundle]; NSString *resourcePath = [appBundle pathForResource:imgFile ofType:nil]; if (resourcePath != nil) { NSURL *imageURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:resourcePath]; NSData *data = [[NSData alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:imageURL]; img = [UIImage imageWithData:data]; // should be autoreleased!! [data release]; } return img; } However, when I use this, the image data is NEVER freed. There is definitely a memory bug with this, although I didn't break any memory management rule I am aware of. My guess is that because this is a class method which gets called from instance methods, There is no active autorelease pool in place or it's one that only gets drained when I quit the app. Could that be right?

  • Difficulty understanding behavior of free()

    - by Rasmi Ranjan Nayak
    int main() { int *ptr, **ptr1; ptr = (int*)malloc(sizeof(int)); ptr1 = (int**)malloc(sizeof(int)); free(ptr); *ptr = 12345; ptr1 = &ptr; //free(ptr); //**ptr1 = 23456; printf("%d \n", **ptr1); system("pause"); return 0; } How does *ptr store the value 12345, when the memory has already been freed? So, now ptr should be pointing to garbage. Why is this happening?

  • How to find out where my memory is going

    - by the_mandrill
I've got the situation where the cycle of loading and then closing a document eats up a few Mb of RAM. This memory isn't being leaked as something owns it and cleans it up when the app exits (Visual Leak Detector and the Mac Leaks tool show agreement on this). However, I'd like to find out where it's going. I'm assuming it's some sort of cache in the application that gets populated when the document loads but not freed when the document is closed. Which methods or tools could I use to find out where these allocations are being made?

I downloaded latest version of google chrome and then tried to install it. However it gave me errors. • Internet doesn't work by default

    - by Adam Martinez
After upgrading to Precise, I am required to run 'sudo dhclient eth0' in a terminal in order to get the internet to work. Everything worked perfectly fine on Oneiric, so It's really puzzling me. I'm thinking it could possibly be something with the kernel, but who knows. • The Jack LaLanne School of Sysadmins

    - by rickramsey
Two of my childhood heroes were Tarzan and Jack LaLanne. Tarzan was an obvious choice: what boy wouldn't want to spend his days bungee jumping through the jungle with his own pack of gorillas? Jack Lalanne had a disturbing habit of wearing stretch pants, but he was so damn fit for an old guy that you couldn't help but be impressed. Especially back then, when nobody knew what a dumb bell was, much less Cross-Fit. Here's what he did to celebrate his 70th birthday. Sooner or later we all face a choice in our careers: surrender to the life of a has-been like Bruce Sprinsteen's baseball player or become an unstoppable sysadmin like Jack Lalanne. If you'd rather keep on fighting like Jack, give these resources a look. Brian Bream's blog provides specific suggestions for keeping your skills up to date. The video interviews describe the types of technologies that are challenging what you used to know. Blog: The Old School Sysadmin - A Dying Breed? by Brian Bream "The sysadmin role has been far too dependent on performing repetitive tasks and working in a reactionary mode ... the sysadmin must grow a much larger skill set to be successful. Don’t grow vertically in one technology, grow horizontally amongst many technologies." Just one of the suggestions Brian Bream provides in this excellent blog post. Video: Freeing the Sysadmin From Repetitive Tasks Interview with Marshall Choy Marshall Choy, Director of Optimized Solutions at Oracle was once a sysadmin. And a Solaris engineer. He explains what optimized solutions are, how they are developed and tested, how they handle patching, and how these vertically integrated systems impact the job and duties of a sysadmin. Video: The Oracle Database Appliance Interview with Bob Thome Bob Thome, Senior Director of Product Management, explains what makes the Database Appliance simple, reliable, and affordable, and how it could change the economies and processes of the data center. Video: Why Pinellas County Chose Oracle Exalytics Interview with Gautham Gautham (pronounced like Batman's Gotham) recently led an effort to refresh the Pinellas County hardware systems. He'll explain what they were looking for, why they chose Oracle Exalytics, how they became convinced it was the right decision, and how it changed the way they managed their data center. Video: DTrace for System Administrators Interview with Brendan Gregg This video interview will give you an idea of some of the value-add tasks you can perform when you are freed from the reactive mode that Brian Bream describes in his blog. • Pay in the future should make you think in the present

    - by BuckWoody
Distributed Computing - and more importantly “-as-a-Service” models of computing have a different cost model. This is something that sounds obvious on the surface but it’s often forgotten during the design and coding phase of a project. In on-premises computing, we’re used to purchasing a server and all of the hardware infrastructure and software licenses needed not only for one project, but several. This is an up-front or “sunk” cost that we consume by running code the organization needs to perform its function. Using a direct connection over wires you’ve already paid for, we don’t often have to think about bandwidth, hits on the data store or the amount of compute we use - we just know more is better. In a pay-as-you-go model, however, each of these architecture decisions has a potential cost impact. The amount of data you store, the number of times you access it, and the amount you send back all come with a charge. The offset is that you don’t buy anything at all up-front, so that sunk cost is freed up. And financial professionals know that money now is worth more than money later. Saving that up-front cost allows you to invest it in other things. It’s not just that you’re using things that now cost money - it’s that the design itself in distributed computing has a cost impact. That can be a really good thing, such as when you dynamically add capacity for paying customers. If you can tie back the cost of a series of clicks to what a user will pay to do so, you can set a profit margin that is easy to track. Here’s a case in point: Assume you are using a large instance in Windows Azure to compute some data that you retrieve from a SQL Azure database. If you don’t monitor the path of the application, you may not know what you are really using. Since you’re paying by the size of the instance, it’s best to maximize it all the time. Recently I evaluated just this situation, and found that downsizing the instance and adding another one where needed, adding a caching function to the application, moving part of the data into Windows Azure tables not only increased the speed of the application, but reduced the cost and more closely tied the cost to the profit. The key is this: from the very outset - the design - make sure you include metrics to measure for the cost/performance (sometimes these are the same) for your application. Windows Azure opens up awesome new ways of doing things, so make sure you study distributed systems architecture before you try and force in the application design you have on premises into your new application structure.

  • Swiss Re increases data warehouse performance and deploys in record time

    - by KLaker
Great information on yet another data warehouse deployment on Exadata. A little background on Swiss Re: In 2002, Swiss Re established a data warehouse for its client markets and products to gather reinsurance information across all organizational units into an integrated structure. The data warehouse provided the basis for reporting at the group level with drill-down capability to individual contracts, while facilitating application integration and data exchange by using common data standards. Initially focusing on property and casualty reinsurance information only, it now includes life and health reinsurance, insurance, and nonlife insurance information. Key highlights of the benefits that Swiss Re achieved by using Exadata: Reduced the time to feed the data warehouse and generate data marts by 58% Reduced average runtime by 24% for standard reports comfortably loading two data warehouse refreshes per day with incremental feeds Freed up technical experts by significantly minimizing time spent on tuning activities Most importantly this was one of the fastest project deployments in Swiss Re's history. They went from installation to production in just four months! What is truly surprising is the that it only took two weeks between power-on to testing the machine with full data volumes! Business teams at Swiss Re are now able to fully exploit up-to-date analytics across property, casualty, life, health insurance, and reinsurance lines to identify successful products. These points are highlighted in the following quotes from Dr. Stephan Gutzwiller, Head of Data Warehouse Services at Swiss Re:  "We were operating a complete Oracle stack, including servers, storage area network, operating systems, and databases that was well optimized and delivered very good performance over an extended period of time. When a hardware replacement was scheduled for 2012, Oracle Exadata was a natural choice—and the performance increase was impressive. It enabled us to deliver analytics to our internal customers faster, without hiring more IT staff" “The high quality data that is readily available with Oracle Exadata gives us the insight and agility we need to cater to client needs. We also can continue re-engineering to keep up with the increasing demand without having to grow the organization. This combination creates excellent business value.” Our full press release is available here: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/customers/customersearch/swiss-re-1-exadata-ss-2050409.html. • How to actually defragment a JFFS2 filesystem

    - by Julie in Austin
I have searched all over the Internet, including on a number of StackExchange forums, for a workable method for defragmenting a JFFS2 filesystem and cannot find an answer. The system in question has a 256MB NAND flash part. It is being accessed as a MTD device which is divided into three partitions. The third partition is where the root file system is being stored as a JFFS2 file system. The issue is that writes to the root file system have non-deterministic performance due to the usual issues of the JFFS2 garbage collector deciding to run at the worst possible times. When that happens, the product is hung for some unknown length of time while the garbage collector (and pdflush) run. Changing the file system isn't an option. The solution needs to be something that can run during off-hours that after having been run results in more predictable write performance. Right now I am working on a program that will attempt to force the garbage collector to run, then delete the file with the hope that all of the freed nodes are suddenly more readily available and make writes perform better. Thoughts?

  • What can cause an increase in inactive memory and how to reclaim it?

    - by Boaz
Hi All, I have heavy application running on a CentOS server and I'm seeing a strange memory behavior. Here is a snapshot of a munin graph: As you can see the amount of committed memory increases gradually causing the swap file to be use. What strikes me odd is that the amount of inactive memory keeps growing as well. It is my understanding that the inactive memory is actually memory freed up but not yet clean by the OS and put back in the free memory pool. It seems that running out of memory is acutally caused by this lack of clean up, but I may be wrong. Can you give some tips to find the cause of the problem and/or cause CentOS to reclaim the inactive memory? Thanks. Some extra info: 1) I have a tmpfs mounted on /tmp and the number of files stored there grows (but it is double the amount of the inactive memory). 2) cat /proc/meminfo (at a later stage than the image) gives: MemTotal: 14371428 kB MemFree: 1207108 kB Buffers: 35440 kB Cached: 4276628 kB SwapCached: 785316 kB Active: 9038924 kB Inactive: 3902876 kB HighTotal: 0 kB HighFree: 0 kB LowTotal: 14371428 kB LowFree: 1207108 kB SwapTotal: 10223608 kB SwapFree: 6438320 kB Dirty: 627792 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 7844560 kB Mapped: 49304 kB Slab: 146676 kB PageTables: 27480 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB CommitLimit: 17409320 kB Committed_AS: 16471488 kB VmallocTotal: 34359738367 kB VmallocUsed: 275852 kB VmallocChunk: 34359462007 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB 3) The application is a combination of MySQL, Heritrix (http://crawler.archive.org/ ) and a Tomcat based Java servlet to manage things.

  • What can cause an increase in inactive memory and how to reclaim it?

    - by Boaz
I have heavy application running on a CentOS server and I'm seeing a strange memory behavior. • Linux bizarre memory report

    - by Igor Liner
I took the following meminfo captures. I don't figure out how the free memory went from 8GB to almost 25GB, when only about 4GB of slab was freed. There was no change of the proccess memory consumption on time the meminfo output was taken. First meminfo with 8GB free memory: MemTotal: 66054256 kB MemFree: 8344960 kB Buffers: 1120 kB Cached: 30172312 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 10795428 kB Inactive: 1914512 kB Active(anon): 10193124 kB Inactive(anon): 1441288 kB Active(file): 602304 kB Inactive(file): 473224 kB Unevictable: 26348912 kB Mlocked: 26348960 kB SwapTotal: 0 kB SwapFree: 0 kB Dirty: 0 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 8886304 kB Mapped: 26383052 kB Shmem: 29097904 kB Slab: 6006384 kB SReclaimable: 3512404 kB SUnreclaim: 2493980 kB KernelStack: 15240 kB PageTables: 78724 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 33027128 kB Committed_AS: 44446908 kB VmallocTotal: 34359738367 kB VmallocUsed: 426656 kB VmallocChunk: 34325375716 kB HardwareCorrupted: 0 kB AnonHugePages: 7696384 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB DirectMap4k: 6144 kB DirectMap2M: 2058240 kB DirectMap1G: 65011712 kB Second memory capture with almost 25GB free memory: MemTotal: 66054256 kB MemFree: 24949116 kB Buffers: 1120 kB Cached: 29085016 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 10168904 kB Inactive: 1461156 kB Active(anon): 10168216 kB Inactive(anon): 1441956 kB Active(file): 688 kB Inactive(file): 19200 kB Unevictable: 26317328 kB Mlocked: 26317376 kB SwapTotal: 0 kB SwapFree: 0 kB Dirty: 0 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 8861224 kB Mapped: 26351488 kB Shmem: 29066248 kB Slab: 1503440 kB SReclaimable: 232880 kB SUnreclaim: 1270560 kB KernelStack: 15256 kB PageTables: 79664 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 33027128 kB Committed_AS: 44418280 kB VmallocTotal: 34359738367 kB VmallocUsed: 426656 kB VmallocChunk: 34325375716 kB HardwareCorrupted: 0 kB AnonHugePages: 7665664 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB DirectMap4k: 6144 kB DirectMap2M: 2058240 kB DirectMap1G: 65011712 kB

  • MySQL table does not exist

    - by Phanindra
I am getting following error in err file. 110803 6:51:26 InnoDB: Error: table `ims`.`temp_discoveryjobdetails` already exists in InnoDB internal InnoDB: data dictionary. Have you deleted the .frm file InnoDB: and not used DROP TABLE? Have you used DROP DATABASE InnoDB: for InnoDB tables in MySQL version <= 3.23.43? InnoDB: See the Restrictions section of the InnoDB manual. InnoDB: You can drop the orphaned table inside InnoDB by InnoDB: creating an InnoDB table with the same name in another InnoDB: database and copying the .frm file to the current database. InnoDB: Then MySQL thinks the table exists, and DROP TABLE will InnoDB: succeed. InnoDB: You can look for further help from InnoDB: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/innodb-troubleshooting.html And when I do the same, like copying the frm file from other database to here and drop the table, i am getting following error, InnoDB: Error: trying to load index PRIMARY for table ims/temp_discoveryjobdetails InnoDB: but the index tree has been freed! 110803 6:50:26 InnoDB: Error: table `ims`.`temp_discoveryjobdetails` does not exist in the InnoDB internal InnoDB: data dictionary though MySQL is trying to drop it. InnoDB: Have you copied the .frm file of the table to the InnoDB: MySQL database directory from another database? InnoDB: You can look for further help from InnoDB: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/innodb-troubleshooting.html Please any one help me out of this. Also can any one tell me why this error is coming. EDIT: The issue is occurring only when disk size is full and when we use Truncate table. Also this is occurring only in 5.1 version but not in 5.0 version.

  • Where is my free space?

    - by Andrey
A week ago I got a low disk space warning on my Vista x64 Ultimate box - 60 Mb free on the disk C; I cleaned up some downloaded msdn images and got 20 Gb freed up. Three days ago I got another notification, it looked suspicious but I didnt have time to deal with it and just moved some heavy stuff to another drive to free up about 17 Gb.... Today morning - 53Mb left on drive C, again! Now it looks really suspecious, so I downloaded TreeSize to see what's taking up the space, just to see it reporting only 121 GB out of 200 GB used, in other words I suppose to have about 79 Gb free. Then I went to Folder Options, enabled viewing of system and hidden files, rerun teh tool to see another 5 Gb added (which is expected). Then I open disk C in windows explorer, select all and right click Properties, to see it reporting teh same amount of files - 126 Gb. But when I look at Drive C properties, it reports that 200GB of 200 Gb are taken. I just scanned the drive with two different antiviruses - Symantec and AVG and found no viruses... I'm a little confused at this point, any ideas where is my free space, woudl be highly appreciated! Thank you! Andrey

  • Safe mode boot with no change on screen but ongoing hard disk activity - why?

    - by omatai
I have a machine with a dying hard drive - bad sectors are starting to multiply :-( The first sign (24 hours ago) was that it had an unmountable boot volume. At this time, I tried booting to safe mode with command prompt, which worked, after which I rebooted normally and ran a chkdsk. It has since been working as well as I could expect, but slowly getting less reliable. So I scheduled another chkdsk on both partitions (C: - boot, D: - data), having freed up a lot of space on both partitions to give Windows a little more scope for repairs (hopefully?). I then rebooted. On reboot, it protested about the unmountable boot volume again, so I booted to safe mode. I got the same list of drivers loaded as yesterday, and then no change to the screen for the past 2 hours. However, I see a flickering hard drive indicator light - not always on, but seldom ever off. What is happening? Is the chkdsk that runs in safe mode one which produces nothing on the screen and so chkdsk could be doing its thing... or is Windows still trying (but failing) to boot into Safe Mode?

  • Redis 2.0.3 would not let go of deleted appendonly.aof file after BGREWRITEAOF

    - by Alexander Gladysh
    Ubuntu 10.04.2, Redis 2.0.3 (more details at the end of the question). My AOF file for Redis is getting too large, to the point where it soon would threaten to take whole free disk space on my small-HDD VPS box: $ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda 32G 24G 6.7G 78% / $ ls -la total 3866688 drwxr-xr-x 2 redis redis 4096 2011-03-02 00:11 . drwxr-xr-x 29 root root 4096 2011-01-24 15:58 .. -rw-r----- 1 redis redis 3923246988 2011-03-02 00:14 appendonly.aof -rw-rw---- 1 redis redis 32356467 2011-03-02 00:11 dump.rdb When I run BGREWRITEAOF, the AOF file shrinks, but disk space is not freed: $ ls -la total 95440 drwxr-xr-x 2 redis redis 4096 2011-03-02 00:17 . drwxr-xr-x 29 root root 4096 2011-01-24 15:58 .. -rw-rw---- 1 redis redis 65137639 2011-03-02 00:17 appendonly.aof -rw-rw---- 1 redis redis 32476167 2011-03-02 00:17 dump.rdb $ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda 32G 24G 6.7G 78% / Sure enough, Redis is still holding the deleted file: $ sudo lsof -p6916 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME ... redis-ser 6916 redis 7r REG 202,0 3923957317 918129 /var/lib/redis/appendonly.aof (deleted) ... redis-ser 6916 redis 10w REG 202,0 66952615 917507 /var/lib/redis/appendonly.aof ... How can I workaround this issue? I can restart Redis this time, but I would really like to avoid doing this on a regular basis. Note that I can not upgrade to 2.2 (upgrade to 2.0.4 is feasible though). More information on my system: $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. • Enable CPU fan always on

    - by Gundars Meness
I am using 3 years old overheating laptop and I want my CPU fan to be spinning 24/7 regardless of the consequences. How to make it spin? The problem is that CPU & GPU heats up to 68°C (154 F) right after boot and never goes down, because CPU fan is not spinning full throttle. It starts spinning faster when temperature goes over 70°C and stops when it reaches seventy again. When doing heavy work on databases, it gets from 70 to 90 in no-time and automatically powers off. Bios does not contain any "fan spin 100%" options, just "spin slowly all the time" and "auto" which is more useless than the first one since my fan doesn't have pwm wire. Currently I'm solving this with cooling stand (3x5V), but it isn't much of a help. I would rather use the CPU fan since it is the only fan directly responsible for cooling down CPU/GPU. But how to make it spin 100% all the time? Should I attach it's red power wire to motherboard to get constant 5V (is there such option?), or is there an option to control it via software? Laptop: Samsung R528 2.3 GHz Intel i3 with Nvidia GeForce 310M Bios: Phoenix 03KT.M003.20100622.KSJ (and that is latest update) OS: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with 3.2.0.51 kernel CPU fan: Image/Description Has 5V 0,4A and only 3 pins, no pwm. P.S. Yes, I did clean everything with alcohol, freed the air vents, changed thermal paste etc; that reduced temperature by 4 degrees.
