  I'm trying to get a working setup of OpenVPN on my VM and authenticate into it from a client. I'm not sure but it looks to me like it's socket related, as it's not set to LISTEN, and localhost seems wrong. Both clients install the cert files and then ask me for the L2TP secret (which was set on the file), but then they oddly ask me for a username and a password, which I don't know where I could possibly get those from. • Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • How can I get FreeNAS to respond to libvirt shutdown requests

  I have a KVM VM of FreeNAS 0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127) running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I'm unable to convince the VM to shutdown from the host virsh shutdown freenas I would expect this to send some ACPI? trigger to the VM and FreeNAS then do what it's told. I'm not a FreeBSD fundi so I don't really know what packages or processes to poke to get this running. I've had hard drive errors in the past and those always had errors about failing to write to specific sectors in the logs. Not this time. Should I be replacing the drive? Could something else be causing the problem? I've scheduled a smartctl -t long test that will finish in a couple of hours. I hope this will give me some more info.

• unable to sniff traffic despite network interface being in monitor or promiscuous mode

  I'm trying to sniff out my network's wireless traffic but am having issues. I'm able to put the card in monitor mode, but am unable to see any traffic except broadcasts, multicasts and probe/beacon frames. I have two network interfaces on this laptop. One is connected normally to 'linksys' and the other is in monitor mode. The interface in monitor mode is on the right channel. I'm not associated with the access point because, as I understand, I don't need to if using monitor mode (vs promiscuous). When I try to ping the router ip, I'm not seeing that traffic show up in wireshark.   I am facing issues in setting up VPN connection(IKEv1) using iPhone (Defult Cisco VPN client) and Strongswan 4.5.0 server. The Strongswan server is running on Ubuntu Linux, which is connected to some wifi hotspot. This is the guide which was used. I generated CA, server and client certificate, with the only difference mentioned below. “While generating server certificate, as per link CN=vpn.strongswan.org instead of this I changed CN name to CN=192.168.43.212.” Once certificates are generated, following (clientCert.p12 and caCert.pem) are sent to mobile via mail and installed on iphone. After installation I notice that certificates are considered as trusted also. Below are the ip addresses assigned to various interfaces Linux server wlan0 interface ip where server is running: 192.168.43.212 Iphone eth0 interface ip address: 192.168.43.72. iphone is also attached with the same wifi hotspot. Below is the snapshot of client configurations. • Disable XP disk check using FAT32

  Right now I'm using Windows XP and Macintosh on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp. Sometimes my XP would crash and when I restarted it it would have to go through disk check, although it says I can skip it by pushing a key, but this never worked for me. I did a bit of research online on how to disable disk check and found chkntfs /x c: but when I tried this out in my cmd it said the disk is FAT32 format. I tried to convert my C: drive from FAT32 to NTFS by using convert c: /FS:NTFS but when I tried this it told me to locate my C: drive. I tried to type C: and Bootcamp but couldn't really get past it. • Unable to write DVD-R(Blank DVD's)

  I have a problem in dvd drive i.e. It can read CD/DVD and can write CD and all CD/DVD-RW but cannot write DVD DVD drive model is SH-S203B Samsung; I also have a log file created by nero burning rom 11. Actually the fact is no Blank DVD's are being read in my dvd drive only previously written dvd's can be read!   I have a lovely ancient ergonomic keyboard (no name SK - 6000) connected via a DIN-ps/2 adapter to a ps/2-usb adapter to my docking station. After Grub it stops working. It takes either suspending and waking up or replugging it while Linux is running to get it to work. No extra kernel modules get loaded for this. When it works and I restart without power off, it will work immediately. We have one core permanently around 40% ~ 60% wait time and trying to spot what is happening I realized that we have more interruptions than cpu context switches. • DVD ROM is not working

I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. I burned it on an other computer but when I try to run it in bios, nothing is done and I'm redirected to Grub of my HD. • mint linux, DVD drive keeps randomly being accessed. unsure how to find culprit

  I have a workstation with mint linux 12. It seems like the DVD drive on the machine keeps randomly "activating". By activating it makes noise, the light turns on, and it seems like it is checking if a disk is in it. At first I thought I was being hacked and someone/something was trying to check if I had media in the DVDRom drive. I ruled that out with netstat and rkhunter. • Iptables blocking mysql port 3306

  I got a Tomcat server running a web application that must access a mysql server via Hibernate on the same machine. So, I added a rule for port 3306 to my iptables script but tomcat cannot connect to the mysql server for some reason. I need to reset all iptables rules - Then tomcat can connect to the mysql server again. All the other iptables rules work perfectly though. What's wrong? • bash: per-command history. How does it work?

  OK. I have an old G5 running Leopard and a Dell running Ubuntu 10.04 at home and a MacPro also running Leopard at work. I use Terminal.app/bash a lot. On my home G5 it exhibits a nice feature: using ? to navigate history I get the last command starting with the few letters that I've typed. This is what I mean (| represents the caret): $ ssh user@server $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history $ ss| So, I've typed the two first letters of "ssh", hitting ? results in this: $ ssh user@server instead of this, which is the behaviour I get everywhere else : $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history If I keep on hitting ? or ?, I can navigate through the history of ssh like this: $ ssh otheruser@otherserver $ ssh user@server $ ssh yetanotheruser@yetanotherserver It works the same for any command like cat, vim or whatever. That's really cool. Except that I have no idea how to mimic this behaviour on my other machines. • my webserver with 16GB ram shows all RAM as used, but is it really, see the 'top'

  I have some questions about my web server. Its a LAMP web server running centos 5.5 and php5, mysql5. The server gets hundreds (maybe thousand) of concurrent users during peak hours. I'm trying to optimize a little and understand "top". From what I can see: all 16GB of my ram have been used up? does that mean that my server needs more memory? My swap is only 2GB, should it be increased? usually during peak hours my server load average first number is about 2.5-3. What could I do to optimize the server so that the load average even during peak doesn't go above 1? In the past I was told a good working server should stay under 1 load, is this still true?
