• How to adjust DPI in 14.04

  I asked about fixing DPI in 12.04. The 14.04 release notes list "Support for High-DPI screens and desktop scaling." Post upgrade, it seems that nothing has changed. Similar symptoms from my previous post persist: The 1" square here is closer to 1/2" Despite the line xserver-command=X -dpi 170 in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, xdpyinfo reports 96x96 dpi I did find that I was able to use the "Scale for menu and title bars" slider in System SettingsDisplays to fix title bar text size instead of setting org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor as described here. The last post also mentions that in Gnome 3, DPI is hard coded to 96. Is this a limitation in 14.04? (I am somewhat ignorant to the distinction between Gnome and Unity) Can I do anything to properly set my DPI?

• failing to boot after ''succesfully'' restoring from deja dup backup

  Before upgrading to 12.04, I completely backed up 11.10 oneiric with deja-dup. In 12.04 I had major nvidia-related problems, so I decided to roll back to 11.10. I tried to restore from the backup and at first failed several times with "an uknown error occured". I reformated my hard drive, installed a fresh copy of 11.10 on the hard drive, and tried the restore again, with no success. I then booted from a live usb and ran the restore again after mounting the file system. I chose the restore location to be "file system" and the restore completed successfully, or so it said. After restarting my PC, all I got was a 'no operating system' error. I remounted my partition chrooted and installed the kernel. I am working now but my question concerns the restore. Why didn't the restore worked? I'm hoping someone has thought of something that I have not.

• Ubuntu 12.10 desktop/interface not showing on VirtualBox VM after login screen

  I'm having some trouble with getting my Ubuntu to work on a VirtualBox VM. I made a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on a VM without any errors. I arrive at the login screen, as soon as I press enter it does it's little loading thingy and then screen goes black, then this is all I get: http://i.imgur.com/zULUI.jpg I can access the terminal and pretty much all the other features through it, but I would like to have the GUI properly working. I've been looking around the web and looking at various fixes to similar problems, but can't seem to get it to work. I'm thinking this problem might have to do with the graphics? I'm running Windows 8 Pro as host, if that helps, might be some compatibility issues with VirtualBox in W8... Thanks in advance!

  This is a question that has been bothering me for some time now. I have asked people and have always got mixed replies. It also has to do with how I will start my career. So here goes: Can an entry level software engineer directly get a job in a security engineering position? I am a graduate student in software engineering with a lot of course work in security as well, including web application, network and mobile security. I want to know if in the current industry, can an entry level engineer take the risk to prepare towards finding a security related position, or is it always necessary for a year or 2 development experience before one should think about finding a security position.   How do I change the color that the system displays just before the login screen is displayed? Here is the boot sequence on my machine in the order that things are displayed: The BIOS screen is flashed. A Black screen is displayed for a few seconds. My Plymouth splash screen is displayed. Purple screen is displayed for a few seconds (This is what I want to change). Finally, the login screen is displayed. • How do I know if I am using Scrum methodologies?

  When I first started at my current job, my purpose was to rewrite a massive excel-VBA workbook-application to C# Winforms because it was thought that the new C# app will fix all existing problems and have all the new features for a perfect world. If it were a direct port, in theory it would be easy as i just need to go through all the formulas, conditional formatting, validations, VBA etc. to understand it. However, that was not the case. Many of the new features are tightly dependant on business logic which I am unfamiliar with. As a solo programmer, the first year was spent solely on deciphering the excel workbook and writing the C# app. In theory, I had the business people to "help" me specify requirements, how GUI looks and work, and testing of the app etc; but in practice it is like a contant tsunami of feature creep. At the beginning of the second year I managed to convince the management that this is not going anywhere. I made them start from scratch with the excel-VBA. I have this "issue log" saved on the network, each time they found something they didn't like about the excel-VBA app, they will write it in there. I check the log daily and consolidate issues (in my mind) mainly into 2 groups: (1) requires massive change. (2) can be fixed in current version. For massive change issues, I make a copy of the latest excel-VBA and give it a new version number, then work on it whenever I can. For current version fixes, I make the changes in a few days to a week, and then immediately release it. I also ensure I update the same change in any in-progress massive change future versions. This has gone on for about 4 months and I feel it works great. I made many releases and solved many real issues, also understood the business logic more and more. However, my boss (non-IT trained) thinks what I am doing are just adhoc changes and that i am not looking at the "bigger picture". I am struggling to convince my boss that this works. So I hope to formalise my approach and maybe borrow a buzzword to confuse him. Incidentally, I read about Agile and SCRUM, about backlog and sprints. But it's all very vague to me still. QUESTION (finally): I want to tell him that this is SCRUM! But I want to hold my breath first and ask whether my current approach is considered SCRUM or SCRUM-like? How can I make it more SCRUM-like? Note that I have only myself, there's no project leader or teams.

• Security settings for this service require 'Basic' Authentication

  Had an issue calling WCF service today. The following exception was being thrown when service was called:WebHost failed to process a request. Sender Information: System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment+HostingManager/35320229 Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/InteliChartVendorCommunication/VendorService.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation.  The exception message is: Security settings for this service require 'Basic' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service..Ensured Basic authentication was indeed enabled in IIS before getting stumped on what actual issue could be. Turns out it was CustomErrors setting. Value was set to "off" vs "Off". Would have expected different exception from .NET (i.e. web.config parse exception) but it works now either way.

• Environment variable blank inside application

  I have an environment variable that I've set in ~/.profile with the following line: export APPDIR=/path/to/dir When I log in and load up a terminal, I can verify that the variable is set: $ printenv APPDIR /path/to/dir I'm trying to access this variable from within a Qt application: QString appdir = getenv("APPDIR"); QTWARNING("dir: |" + appdir + "|"); The warning window that pops up shows me: dir: || What is going on here? Am I misunderstanding about how environment variables work in Ubuntu? This is with a C++/Qt App on Ubuntu 11.10 x86.

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashes on startup for newer versions of Linux, possibly related to WiFi

  My computer gets to the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the orange/white dots, and then the screen goes black, spits out a lot of error messages, and cannot boot. (If it'd be helpful, I can take a photo of my screen in this state.) I've found I can successfully boot if my wireless card is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, my computer crashes with the same black screen of death. I can also successfully boot if I choose "Previous Linux Version" and select a few versions back (I think 3.0.6). Here are some relevant details about my setup: Ubuntu 12.04 Computer: Lenovo x230 Wireless: Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4 RAM: 16 GB of RAM Thank you!!!

• Programming to ANSI standards (for engineering)

  I am currently tasked to write a software to help engineers design standard compliant designs. If there is a bad design, software will report an error or warning. Maybe it's just me, but anyone who has done this should be familiar with the massive amounts of ANSI standards tables like this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominal_Pipe_Size Computers are, as its name suggest, computing machines, not lookup machines. I feel that feeding formulas into computers and churning out standard compliant designs is much more efficient than doing memory intensive data lookups that are prone to human input errors and susceptible to "data updates". I actually think that there are formulas to calculate all those numbers, but nobody so far could give me that information. Anyone been through this before? What is THE best approach to this? Thanks for sharing.

• Adding 1 subdomain using .htaccess

  Alright, so unlike other solutions I only want one subdomain to appear to be added. Say I wanted example.com/folder/page.php to be displayed as foo.example.com/folder/page.php, how would I go about doing this? The foo will never change, and it only needs to be for one page. Various other sites have been unable to provide an answer, thanks in advance. Edit: Oh, and I also have full DNS records to the domain.

• Trouble updating metapackage

  I'm having trouble downloading xfce4 metapackage. I don't have a desktop yet just cmd line and this is my first time on linux. sudo apt-get install xfce4 brings back Unable to locate package xfce4 Does that with all packages, leads me to sudo apt-get update Leaves me with temporary failure resolving 'downloads-distro.mongodb.org' Read some solutions to fix this but it had me going in circles with no avail. Need to get this working from cmd prompt. So I'm having trouble updating and am lost here without a desktop client. If anyone can help that would be great.

• Installing along side of Windows 8

  It appears as though many people are having problems installing Ubuntu along side Windows 8. My problem, however, seems to be sufficiently different to be unique among such problems. I can't get the Ubuntu 12.10 live-USB installer to run. When I boot I get the following four options: Run from this USB Install to disk Check memory (I can't remember the last one) I have tried the top two. Both result in the screen going black briefly then windows 8 booting as per usual. Does anyone know how I may manage to overcome this problem?

• JavaScript and callback nesting

  A lot of JavaScript libraries (notably jQuery) use chaining, which allows the reduction of this: var foo = $(".foo"); foo.stop(); foo.show(); foo.animate({ top: 0 }); to this: $(".foo").stop().show().animate({ top: 0 }); With proper formatting, I think this is quite a nice syntactic capability. However, I often see a pattern which I don't particularly like, but appears to be a necessary evil in non-blocking models. This is the ever-present nesting of callback functions: $(".foo").animate({ top: 0, }, { callback: function () { $.ajax({ url: 'ajax.php', }, { callback: function () { ... } }); } }); And it never ends. Even though I love the ease non-blocking models provide, I hate the odd nesting of function literals it forces upon the programmer. I'm interesting in writing a small JS library as an exercise, and I'd love to find a better way to do this, but I don't know how it could be done without feeling hacky. Are there any projects out there that have resolved this problem before? And if not, what are the alternatives to this ugly, meaningless code structure?

  I was recently asked the following question in an interview : How do you debug a C++ program ? I started by explaining that programs may have syntax and semantic errors. Compiler reports the syntax errors which can be corrected. For semantic errors, various debuggers are available. I specifically talked about gdb, which is command line, and Visual Studio IDE's debugger, which has a GUI, and common commands. I also talked about debug and release version of code, how assertions should be used for debug build, how exceptions helps in automatic cleanup & putting the program in valid state, and how logging can be useful (e.g. using std::clog). I want to know if this answer is complete or not. Also, I want to hear how other people will go about answering this question in a structured manner ? Thanks.

• Is it possible to work with a dedicated server in XNA?

  Hi I want to release my XNA game to the XBOX platform, but I'm worried about the networking limitations. Basically, I want to have a dedicated (authoritative) server, but it sounds like that is not possible. Which is why I'm wondering about: Using port 80 web calls to php-driven database Using an xbox as a master-server (is that possible?) I like the sound of #1, because I could write my own application to run on the xbox, and I would assume other users could connect to it similar to the p2p architecture. The app will work by creating a Unity3D mesh, applies a google earth image as the texture then draws out 3d lines(architectural drawings) over the Unity Mesh.   I started installing HPL a while ago, and had a related question. I've been following along with this guide from Intel. I figure this warrants a whole new one. When I try to make the archive, the output seems fine until the end, where it gives an error. make[2]: Entering directory `/hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64' Makefile:47: Make.inc: No such file or directory make[2]: *** No rule to make target `Make.inc'. Stop. make[2]: Leaving directory `/hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64' make[1]: *** [build_src] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/hpl-2.0' make: *** [build] Error 2 Going to the directory /hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64 shows a file, "Make.inc", but it's highlighted red, and the white text blinks. Is there a way to manually make that file? What do I need to do to get the makefile to do this for me?

  So the same code works on my ubuntu server but when I upload it to my dedicated hosting server running CentOS it seems to add an extra prefix of .:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php: I tried setting includepath to different things but it just doesn't work. the file is in a directory called language in the same folder as the file that is including it and I'm using : include dirname(FILE).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."language".DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."storage.inc"; and include dirname(__FILE__)."/language/language.php"; and include "language/language.php"; and alot of other combinations but I can't get it to find the file. • Multiple Graphics Cards on Fedora 15 (Gnome 3)

  I have the (delightful) misfortune of having 3 graphics cards. They are XFX Radeon 5750s. Each drives 2 monitors via dvi. I am having a really hard time getting these running on fedora 15 (gnome 3). So my setup is 3 columns of 2 monitors (the upper monitor is mounted upside down in each column to reduce the bezel between monitors). When the (graphical) login screen comes up all 6 have the blue stripey background that must be the default, but then when I login, things get interesting. In the xorg.conf below, you will see only 2 of the screens in the serverlayout while the other 4 are commented out. Logging in with only 2 of the screens active works well (and it even remembers that the top one is upside down, and should be considered above the lower, i am not sure where it stores this info, but i set it using the graphical "Displays" settings) However, as soon as I uncomment a third screen, or more, it gives me an error message when I login. It's one of those friendly, less helpful messages (Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again). If i do not use an xorg.conf, then the "Displays" prefs pane shows only the two monitors on one of my graphics cards Thanks to anyone who can help me get going!   I run Perl/Tk or WWW::Mechanize just fine using terminal but when I try to invoke the interpreter through Emacs shell (M-!), it dies with a message: Can't locate tk.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.12.4 /usr/local/share/perl/5.12.4 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.12 /usr/share/perl/5.12 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at perl-tk.pl line 2. Obviously, this array @INC doesn't hold the path to my modules, the question is, how can I do that? I didn't find anything on emacs manual. I also googled it but to no avail.

• Why does File::Slurp return a scalar when it should return a list?

  I am new to the File::Slurp module, and on my first test with it, it was not giving the results I was expecting. It took me a while to figure it out, so now I am interested in why I was seeing this certain behavior. My call to File::Slurp looked like this: my @array = read_file( $file ) || die "Cannot read $file\n"; I included the "die" part because I am used to doing that when opening files. My @array would always end up with the entire contents of the file in the first element of the array. Finally I took out the "|| die" section, and it started working as I expected. Here is an example to illustrate: perl -de0 Loading DB routines from perl5db.pl version 1.22 Editor support available. I have a feeling this might be more of a Perl precedence question instead of a File::Slurp question. I looked in the File::Slurp module and it looks like it is set to croak if there is a problem, so I guess the proper way to do it is to allow File::Slurp to croak for you. Now I'm just curious why I was seeing these differences.
