Unable to connect with PPTP (From Windows 8 to Ubuntu 12.10)

I'm trying to connect using PPTP to my VPS. At first, I got the problem that my connection (Wlan, which is what I use to connect to the Internet) goes "limited" (I can't connect to the Internet) when I connect to the VPN. Then, I used to get some long message, something like you might be trying using L2TP. Then now it's back again to the "limited" problem. What's the solution to that problem? One thing I'm not sure of is what I put as my local IP address in "sudo nano /etc/pptpd.conf" Is it 127.0.0.1? Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

Here are a few tools we would like to work with: Redmine GIT Hosting a website/blog to show our work Hosting an internal and private development website/blog We haven't decided yet which OS we will install, but we were looking toward Ubuntu or Fedora. Having a limited budget, 300$/year, we would like to have some advices on the following dedicated server specifications: Kimsufi 2G: Hardware: Intel Celeron/Atom, 1.20 Ghz, 64 bits, 2Gb DDR2, HDD 1 To, Backup FTP 100Gb Network: Connection 100 Mbps, Illimited trafic Dedibox SC: Hardware: Dell Nano U2250, 1x 1,6GHz, 64 bits, 2Gb DDR2, HDD 160 Gb Network: Connection 1Gbit/sec, Illimited trafic Will these server be sufficient? Downloading source via bazaar

Forgive me if this is a stupid question or an inapproptiate place to ask. This is my first time attempting to download source by means of bazaar (launchpad). Regardless of the package or branch... I always get an error like the following: bzr: ERROR: Revision {[email protected]} not present in "Graph(StackedParentsProvider(bzrlib.repository._LazyListJoin(([CachingParentsProvider(None)], []))))". I have looked all over and cannot find an answer. What does this mean? How can I resolve it? Cygwin creates files with special (shared) icons on windows

I use cygwin to transfer files between linux and windows machines. Everytime I transfer a file to a windows machine it adds an extra shared user icon on the file's or folder's icon itself. This also happens if I create a file from cygwin on windows using pretty much any command: echo, vim, nano, cat. This is what the cygwin-created folders (and files) look like. This is what a normal folder (or file) looks like. I'm thinking it has to do with permission, because I'd have to chmod it everytime if I want other applications to access the files or folders on windows. How can I tell cygwin to create regular ol' files just like a user or any program would?

Mount SMB / AFP 13.10

I cannot seem to get Ubuntu to mount a mac share via SMB or AFP. I've tried the following... AFP: apt-get install afpfs-ng-utils mount_afp afp://user:password@localip/share /mnt/share Error given: "Could not connect, never got a reponse to getstatus, Connection timed out". Which is odd as I can access the share just fine via Mac. Acer aspire one d270 can not set brightness

I hope you can help me figure out how to set the brightness at my netbook. Following problem appears since I installed ubuntu 11.10 on my acer: I am not able to adjust the brightness by FN Keys nor manually at "systemsettings-display". After searching with google for a while, I found a way via the terminal to adjust it with the folloqing command: "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=7f" ( from 00-9f). That was a major breakthrough for me as I am still new to Linux OS. But still seeking a way to get the FN keys for brightness to work, I kept searching until I found "askubuntu.com". I read through various Questions by other acer users and tried there solutions, but unfortunately none worked out for me. From this thread: fn + arrow keys don't adjust actual brightness on an Acer Aspire 5740 "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf". This command did not work because the file was not found. I also used nano instead of gedit, but the file was empty( I think it just created the file since it did not exist). These commands which i found gave me a boot loop and I had to repair ubuntu: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" sudo update-grub From this post Screen Brightness not adjustable for Acer Aspire S3: I tried the solution from the last post, but it did not work either. Does anyone know what I could try? I would appreciate it, if someone could help me out with this. Host is unreacheble with static networking configuration via /etc/network/interfaces while GUI NetworkManager is ok

I have some trouble setting-up the network interface using the static IP configuration. I run ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.11.0-22 with the back-ports enabled. I followed these instructions from help.ubuntu.com but there seems to exist some conflict between the GUI approach (NetworkManager) and the command line approach. $ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.1.1.50 gateway 10.1.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 dns-nameservers 192.168.3.45 192.168.8.10 $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart I than try to ping for example google.com ping -c 3 www.google.com the response is that the host is unreachable. The icon on the top right of the desktop says: wired network disconnected. If I work using the GUI approach (Edit Connections and so on...) all works great. How to manually set color of Unity Panel?

I was just wondering if there's a way to set the color of the Unity panel manually, as opposed to having it derived from smooshing all the colors of the wallpaper together. (the launcher on the left side of the screen that comes default in Ubuntu is the Unity Panel, right? If not, please correct me on my terminology.) The reason I want this is because I have this cool wallpaper I found on DeviantArt, and I used GIMP to make Dawn, Dusk, and Midnight versions of it. Then, I set them with a transition effect, so that the lighting changes over the course of the day. Unfortunately, the Unity Panel turns a sickly sewer green at night (it could also be said to look like radioactive barf.) Either way, I don't like my launcher thingy looking like that. I'd prefer to stay away from programs that let you customise the Unity Panel (I'm fine with using sudo nano to edit system config files,) but I would if it were the only option. grub workaround for cannot find UUID in dual boot system fails and now grub won't boot anything

New clean install of x86 11.10 desktop. Dual boot with windows XP and Linux on separate drives. After install grub will not boot Windows, but by changing boot drive boots fine. When I go to fix this I find from http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ and a link to http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:search my problem, the message on the grub boot error screen: error: no such device: 6??????? So I follow the Step2 and compare the output of: sudo blkid and sudo nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg The UUIDs in both match for the Windows drive, so I do the fix in Step 4 "remove the search lines for …" in /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib, commenting out the three lines as before? # if fs_uuid="`${grub_probe} --device ${device} --target=fs_uuid 2> /dev/null`" ; then # echo "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ${fs_uuid}" # fi I run sudo update-grub and check /etc/default/grub.cfg and see that it now identifies the Windows partition not by UUID, which I suppose is the workaround. But now when I try to boot 11.10 Desktop, I get: error: no such partition… … and when I try to boot Windows, I get: error: invalid signature. So Now, how do I fix this… The boot problem and find a workaround that works?

A "tinkered" PC can ping by IP, not by hostname. How to fix?

Update kernel patch for VMware Player 4.0.3

As I stated some days ago, after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise Pangolin, aka 12.04 LTS, I had a minor obstacle with VMware products. Today, VMware offered to upgrade to Player 4.0.3 due to security-related reasons. Initially, I thought that this update might have the patch for kernel 3.2.0 integrated but sadly that is not the case. 'Hacking' the kernel patch My first intuitive try to run the existing patch against the sources of VMware Player 4.0.3 failed, as the patch by Stefano Angeleri (weltall) is originally written explicitely against Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. But this is nothing to worry about seriously. Just fire up your favourite editor of choice and modify the version signature for VMware Player, like so: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh And update line 8 for the new version: plreqver=4.0.3 Save the shell script and run it as super-user (root): sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh In case that you previously patched your VMware sources you have to remove some artifacts beforehand. Otherwise, the patch script will inform you like so: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting In that case, simply remove the 'hidden' file and run the shell script again: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh To finalise your installation either restart the vmware service or reboot your machine. On first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Currently, I would assume that in case of VMware Workstation 8.0.3 you can follow the same steps as just described.

I'm setting up solr locally for my development purposes and integration with Drupal 7. I'm not very familiar with tomcat. My background has primarily been LAMP setups. So I went and installed the package provided by ubuntu for apache solr following this guide. sudo apt-get install tomcat6 tomcat6-admin tomcat6-common tomcat6-user tomcat6-docs tomcat6-examples sudo apt-get install solr-tomcat I've got that working. The apt-get package manager does a great job and allows me to setup solr but with one core. What steps need to be taken to enable multi core setup for apache solr? Updating the jump in game

I am making a Java game and I want my game to run the same on any FPS so I'm using time delta between each update. This is the update method of the Player: public void update(long timeDelta) { //speed is the movement speed of a player on X axis //timeDelta is expressed in nano seconds so I'm dividing it with 1000000000 to express it in seconds if (Input.keyDown(37)) this.velocityX -= speed * (timeDelta / 1000000000.0); if (Input.keyDown(39)) this.velocityX += speed * (timeDelta / 1000000000.0); if(Input.keyPressed(38)) { this.velocityY -= 6; } velocityY += g * (timeDelta/1000000000.0); //applying gravity move(velocityX, velocityY); /*this is method which moves a player according to velocityX and velocityY, and checking the collision */ this.velocityX = 0.0; } The strange thing is that when I have unlimited FPS (and update number) my player is jumping about 10 blocks. It jumps even higher when the FPS is increasing. If I limit FPS it is jumping 4 blocks. (BLOCK: 32x32) I have just realized that the problem is this: if(Input.keyPressed(38)) { this.velocityY -= 6; } I add -6 to velocityY which increases player's Y proportionally to the update number and not to the time. But I don't know how to fix this.

Good books or tutorials on building projects without an IDE?

While I'm certainly under no illusions that building software without an IDE is possible, I don't actually know much about doing it well. I've been using graphical tools like Visual Studio or Code::Blocks so long that I'm pretty well lost without them. And that really stinks when I want to change environments or languages. I couldn't really do anything in D until someone made a Visual Studio plugin, and now that I'm trying to do more development on Mac, I can't use D again because the XCode plugins don't work. I'm sick of being lost when I see a .make file and having no idea what I'm supposed to do with a folder full of source files. People can't be compiling them one by one using the console and then linking them one by one. You'd spend more time typing file names than code. So what are the automation and productivity tools of the non-IDE user? How do you manage a project when you're writing all the code in emacs or vim or nano or whatever? I would love it if there was a book or a guide online that spells some of this out.

Programmer's editor or IDE for C code

I feel like this question has been repeated here, but I couldn't find it. What open-source programmer's editor or IDE is best for writing code in C? A GUI and integration with Clang for static code analysis or git for version control would be convenient, but aren't necessary. I would ideally use two editors: one feature-filled IDE and one with a small memory footprint, but editors like jEdit, Geany, Diakonos, nano, etc. don't satisfy many of my needs, which include: Good support for refactoring and code completion. Extensibility in C or a "modern" scripting language (i.e. Ruby or Python) Relatively good performance and lack of bloated-ness

OnPage Load display one sentence - hide others

Hi I have created http://techavid.com/design/test3.html and when you load the page you see there are 3 images. The sun image is focused(in color), while the others are greyed out until clicked. That is how it should be for the images. Under each image you see a sentence 1st: Sun, 2nd: Airplane & 3rd: Nano, but when page loads you see all three sentences. How to make it so when page loads the first sentence underneath the active image (sun) shows only and the others do not show, they only show when clicked (though that works just need to figure out onpage load only show "1st: Sun")? thanks :) paul J.

After searching alot this is what I understand its my first time and havent done custom logs before. First of all which file should I edit for custom logs because this thing I cant find. C++: ifstream::getline problem

I am reading a file like this: char string[256]; std::ifstream file( "file.txt" ); // open the level file. if ( ! file ) // check if the file loaded fine. { // error } while ( file.getline( string, 256, ' ' ) ) { // handle input } Just for testing purposes, my file is just one line, with a space at the end: 12345 My code first reads the 12345 successfully. But then instead of the loop ending, it reads another string, which seems to be a return/newline. I have saved my file both in gedit and in nano. And I have also outputted it with the Linux cat command, and there is no return on the end. So the file should be fine. Why is my code reading a return/newline? Thanks.

If the original has been preserved before, it skips the move-and-copy-back (and I use move-and-copy-back to preserve the original timestamp). This works as intended if, after I make it executable with chmod I launch it from within the directory where I am editing, e.g. with ./safe.sh filename However, when I move it into /usr/bin and then I try to run it in a different directory (without the leading ./) it fails with: *-bash: /usr/bin/safe.sh: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Text file busy* My question is, when I move this script into the path (verified by echo $PATH) why does it then fail? D'oh? Inquiring minds want to know how to make this work.

Custom configuration file custom_config.js not working?

Hello gals/guys, I am trying to use a custom configuration file instead of the default config.js file in the ckeditor root. I have placed a renamed copy of the config.js file in my webroot and call it with customConfig. It is not working for me though. Is my syntax creating any issues? How does DateTime.Now.Tick exactly work?

In my application I generate files at random opportunities. To ensure a unique naming, I tried to use the nano seconds since 1.1.1970: long time = DateTime.Now.Ticks; String fileName = Convert.ToString(time); Console.WriteLine(fileName); Now I observed something weird. Why is the output like that? I mean why are the last 4 numbers always the same?
