What is the best online notepad? I once used Google Notebook but Google no longer supports it and I don't want to put my stuff on an unsupported site. I now use Luminotes but I find editing of the text to be infuriating. What is better?

Apple Service Diagnostic application on USB key?

I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive. Confusion on networking service start/stop in Ubuntu

I'm preparing to move and took down two of my servers, leaving only one with some essential services running. What I neglected to consider was that one was the DHCP server(which I realized when somebody contacted me saying they couldn't connect. Whups). So because I only have a few hosts on this small network, I opted to just statically configure them for now. One of these is a new Ubuntu 11.04 server, where I have very little experience. I edited /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/hosts to reflect my changes. I ran $sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop *deconfiguring network interfaces ... So yay. Then I try to start, it gives me the mumbo jumbo about using services (why didn't it do that for the stop?) So instead I run ... $sudo service networking start networking stop/waiting Now, to me that says the status of the service is stopped. But when I ping another computer, I get a successful reply. So is it not actually stopped? More importantly, am I doing something wrong? Edit I set everything back to original settings and set up a DHCP server. "starting" networking does the same thing. I can only assume this is normal, I just don't know WHY. It can't be anything to do with the configuration files, since they've been restored.

WCF Self-hosted service, client clean-up on service stop

Hi everyone, I'm curious to know how I would go about setting up my service to stop cleanly on the server the service will be installed on. For example when I have many clients connecting and doing operations every minute and I want to shut-down the service for maintenance, how can I do this in the "OnStop" event of the service to then let the main service host to deny any new client connections and let the current connections finish before it actually shuts down its services to the client, this will ensure data isn't corrupted on the server as the server shuts down. Right now I'm not setup as a singleton because I need scalability in the service. So I would have to somehow get my service host to do this independently of knowing how many instances are created of the service class. I hope I explain myself good enough, if not, let me know, I'll try to explain better. Thanks, Scott

Calling a web service from a windows service

I'm sure there's an elegant solution to the problem but I just can't get my head around it. I am trying to call a web service from within a Windows service. The web service is secured (using Windows authentication). The account that the windows service runs under does have the rights to call the web service but I can't figure out how to get those credentials and send them off to the web service. The web service is WCF and is hosted on the same machine (in IIS) as the windows service.

Using external SOAP service in Workflow service

I am using the .NET 4 framework and have made a WCF Workflow Service Application. I want to use a SOAP web service (.NET 3.5) I have running in another instance of VS. The only method that is exposed is the following: [WebMethod] public string Reverse(string input) { char[] chars = input.ToCharArray(); Array.Reverse(chars); return new string(chars); } I have used the following steps to add the service in my Workflow: Add Service Reference Provided the WSDL (the operation shows in the Operations box as expected) Clicked OK Build the solution to ensure that the service shows in my toolbox Drag the service from the toolbox into the workflow However, when I look at the properties of the service in the workflow, there is no way to specify the input argument or where to store the result of the invocation of the service. I only have the option of specifying some obscure parameters such as Body:InArgument<ReverseRequestBody and outBody:OutArgument<ReverseResponseBody (none of which are strings). Here is a screenshot depicting the properties of the service in the workflow: My question is therefore: Is it possible at all to use the SOAP service by specifying a string as the input argument (like it is meant to be used), and also assign the result to a workflow variable?

unexpected EOF and end of document

I have been fiddling with this code for a few days. Mind you I am a beginner. I just want to get my script to be able to download a remote file, and scan MineCraft plugins. I got the scan plugins to work, but I'm having two other issues. Database-as-a-Service on Exadata Cloud

Note – Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c DBaaS is platform agnostic and is designed to work on Exadata/non-Exadata, physical/virtual, Oracle/non Oracle platforms and it’s not a mandatory requirement to use Exadata as the base platform. Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) is an important trend these days and the top business drivers motivating customers towards private database cloud model include constant pressure to reduce IT Costs and Complexity, and also to be able to improve Agility and Quality of Service. The first step many enterprises take in their journey towards cloud computing is to move to a consolidated and standardized environment and Exadata being already a proven best-in-class popular consolidation platform, we are seeing now more and more customers starting to evolve from Exadata based platform into an agile self service driven private database cloud using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. Together Exadata Database Machine and Enterprise Manager 12c provides industry’s most comprehensive and integrated solution to transform from a typical silo’ed environment into enterprise class database cloud with self service, rapid elasticity and pay-per-use capabilities. In today’s post, I’ll list down the important steps to enable DBaaS on Exadata using Enterprise Manager 12c. These steps are chalked down based on a recent DBaaS implementation from a real customer engagement - Project Planning - First step involves defining the scope of implementation, mapping functional requirements and objectives to use cases, defining high availability, network, security requirements, and delivering the project plan. In a Cloud project you plan around technology, business and processes all together so ensure you engage your actual end users and stakeholders early on in the project right from the scoping and planning stage. Setup your EM 12c Cloud Control Site – Once the project plan approval and sign off from stakeholders is achieved, refer to EM 12c Install guide and these are some important tips to follow during the site setup phase - Review the new EM 12c Sizing paper before you get started with install Cloud, Chargeback and Trending, Exadata plug ins should be selected to deploy during install Refer to EM 12c Administrator’s guide for High Availability, Security, Network/Firewall best practices and options Your management and managed infrastructure should not be combined i.e. EM 12c repository should not be hosted on same Exadata where target Database Cloud is to be setup Setup Roles and Users – Cloud Administrator (EM_CLOUD_ADMINISTRATOR), Self Service Administrator (EM_SSA_ADMINISTRATOR), Self Service User (EM_SSA_USER) are the important roles required for cloud lifecycle management. Roles and users are managed by Super Administrator via Setup menu –> Security option. For Self Service/SSA users custom role(s) based on EM_SSA_USER should be created and EM_USER, PUBLIC roles should be revoked during SSA user account creation. Configure Software Library – Cloud Administrator logs in and in this step configures software library via Enterprise menu –> provisioning and patching option and the storage location is OMS shared filesystem. Software Library is the centralized repository that stores all software entities and is often termed as ‘local store’. Setup Self Update – Self Update is one of the most innovative and cool new features in EM 12c framework. Self update can be accessed via Setup -> Extensibility option by Super Administrator and is the unified delivery mechanism to get all new and updated entities (Agent software, plug ins, connectors, gold images, provisioning bundles etc) in EM 12c. Deploy Agents on all Compute nodes, and discover Exadata targets – Refer to Exadata discovery cookbook for detailed walkthrough to ensure successful discovery of Exadata targets. Configure Privilege Delegation Settings – This step involves deployment of privilege setting template on all the nodes by Super Administrator via Setup menu -> Security option with the option to define whether to use sudo or powerbroker for all provisioning and patching operations. Provision Grid Infrastructure with RAC Database on Compute Nodes – Software is provisioned in this step via a provisioning profile using EM 12c database provisioning. In case of Exadata, Grid Infrastructure and RAC Database software is already deployed on compute nodes via OneCommand from Oracle, so SSA Administrator just needs to discover Oracle Homes and Listener as EM targets. Databases will be created as and when users request for databases from cloud. Customize Create Database Deployment Procedure – the actual database creation steps are "templatized" in this step by Self Service Administrator and the newly saved deployment procedure will be used during service template creation in next step. This is an important step and make sure you have locked all the required variables marked as locked as ‘Y’ in this table. Setup Self Service Portal – This step involves setting up of zones, user quotas, service templates, chargeback plan. The SSA portal is setup by Self Service Administrator via Setup menu -> Cloud -> Database option and following guided workflow. Refer to DBaaS cookbook for details. You also have an option to customize SSA login page via steps documented in EM 12c Cloud Administrator’s guide Final Checks – Define and document process guidelines for SSA users and administrators. Get your SSA users trained on Self Service Portal features and overall DBaaS model and SSA administrators should be familiar with Self Service Portal setup pieces, EM 12c database lifecycle management capabilities and overall EM 12c monitoring framework. GO LIVE – Announce rollout of Database-as-a-Service to your SSA users. Users can login to the Self Service Portal and request/monitor/view their databases in Exadata based database cloud. Congratulations! You just delivered a successful database cloud implementation project! Is there any online web application for daily activity logs [closed]

I am looking for daily calendar-like apps, but ones that have some text editor attached for every day. All I want to do is that when I open that page, it should open the text editor for that day and I could enter some data of what I have accomplished, then save it. The next day I'd like it so when I open the application, then I can go to new page, but I have all of the previous day's data to have a look at what I have done. So, i am in the process of tweaking my spending and i need to change my backup plan... I am currently using a mix of JungleDisk and ZManda ZCB to backup files on my MacBook Pro, Main Windows Server Wrokstation, a dedicated Windows Server in a datacenter, and various other machines and file sources. The problem is the cost: this month, it has cost me about $90 to backup a little over 500Gb... This amount of data will increese over time too, since i am backing up Photos (24Mb RAW images + 4-8MB JPEGs), Videos (various cameras shooting 720p and 1080p), Music, Movies, TV shows and Apps from iTunes (though with iTunes cloud, this might not need to be backed up again) and source code... I have looked at the likes of Mozy, CrashPlan+ and Pro, Backblaze and Carbonite, but each have their problems: Mozy seems overly expenvice per gig at 50C Crashplan wont sell to me since i am outside the US (they hide it on their site... hidden in the FAQ section!) Backblaze dont support Windows Server Carbonite business pricing is $600 up front for 500Gb of storage... Fro $229, they will not backup Windows Servers. So, other than those, Jungle Disk (at 15c per Gig) or ZManda (also at 15c per Gig) what other options are there? what are other people using?

As a work-around, I'll just play the videos and record the soundtrack for later listening. Are there good applications for Windows, free or affordable, that will let me record whatever is being played on the soundcard? Thank you.

How do I grant permissions to remotely start/stop a service using Powershell?

We have a PowerShell script that restarts a service on another computer. When we use PowerShell's built-in service control cmdlets, like so: $svc = Get-Service -Name MyService -ComputerName myservicehostname Stop-Service -InputObject $svc Start-Service -InputObject $svc We get this error back: Stop-Service : Cannot open MyService service on computer 'myservicehostname'. However, when we use sc.exe, like so: C:\Windows\System32\sc \\myservicehostname stop MyService C:\Windows\System32\sc \\myservicehostname start MyService the start and stop succeed. The user doing the restarting is not an administrator. We use subinacl to grant the user permissions to start/stop and query the service: subinacl.exe /service MyService /GRANT=MyServiceControlUser=STO How come PowerShell can't stop my service but sc.exe can?

Best way to go for simple online multi-player games?

I want to create a trivia game for my website. The graphic design does not have to be too fancy, probably no more advanced than a typical flash game. It needs to be secure because I want users to be able to play for real money. It also needs to run fast so users don't spend their time frustrated with game freezing. Compatibility, as with almost all online products, is key because of the large target market. I am most acquainted with Java programming, but I don't want to do it in Java if there is something much better. I am assuming I will have to utilize a variety of different languages in order for everything to come together. If someone could point out the main structure of everything so I could get a good start that would be great! 1) Language choice for simple secure online multiplayer games? 2) Perhaps use a database like MySQL, stored on a secure server for the trivia questions? 3) Free educational resources and even simpler projects to practice? Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful...Thanks!

Using SSIS Web Service Task with WCF

Hello, I am using SQL Server 2008 SSIS for importing data to the DB and .Net 3.5 SP1 for Creating the WCF service. In the import task I am trying to use the Web Service Task to report to a WCF service. At first I encountered a problem with the WCF WSDL, the Web Service task couldn't get their code generated from the metadata exposed by the WCF service. So I found a blog post at Christian Weyer's Blog talking just about that. Now after I can successfully load a WCF service to the Web Service Task and get the functions generated just fine from the WSDL I encountered another problem. I get an error from the SSIS package at runtime saying that "Method 'ProxyNamespace.MyService.GetData' not found." The full Error is: Error: 0xC002F304 at Web Service Task False, Web Service Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.WebServiceTask.WebserviceTaskException: Could not execute the Web method. The error is: Method 'ProxyNamespace.MyService.GetData' not found.. at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.WebServiceTask.WebMethodInvokerProxy.InvokeMethod(DTSWebMethodInfo methodInfo, String serviceName, Object connection) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.WebServiceTask.WebServiceTaskUtil.Invoke(DTSWebMethodInfo methodInfo, String serviceName, Object connection, VariableDispenser taskVariableDispenser) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.WebServiceTask.WebServiceTask.executeThread()". Android Loading listview items from service results in hang

Hello, In my Android application, I have a ListActivity. This ListActivity uses a SimpleAdapter that I fill with items from my service. So, in my code, I do: MySuperCoolService.Binder serviceBinder = null; private ServiceConnection serviceConnection = new ServiceConnection() { public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName className, IBinder service) { Log.d(TAG, "Service connection: connected!"); serviceBinder = (MySuperCoolService.Binder)service; } public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName className) { Log.d(TAG, "Service connection: disconnected"); serviceBinder = null; } }; bindService(new Intent(this, MySuperCoolService.class), serviceConnection, BIND_AUTO_CREATE); while(serviceBinder==null) { Thread.Sleep(1000); } // now retrieve from service using binder and set list adapter This whole operation takes hardly any time (less than a second), so I want it to run in the UI thread. See my onCreate: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); fillDataUsingCodeAbove(); } The reason I want this to run in the UI thread is that if you have a list item selected, or you have scrolled to a certain position in the ListView, and you rotate the device or take out the keyboard or something (to trigger a configuration change) when my activity is restarted, Android will try to restore the state right after onCreate. But, if I run it in a separate thread, it will not. Also there is a cool fadein animation too :) The problem I am having with running it in the UI thread is that when I try to bind to the service, that service bind request gets put onto the message queue. But then when I go into my loop, I stop the message queue from looping. So my program hangs, because it's waiting for the service to get bound, and the service won't get bound until the loop ends. I have thought of putting Looper.loop() inside my loop, but that just hangs it at Looper.loop() (I don't know why.) Sorry for such a long question, Isaac Waller

Best Online Programming Degree? (Masters Level)

I am less then a year from graduating with my bachelors in web development, however I would like to continue on with a masters in programming. As far as I can tell, what I want is a masters in software engineering. Sadly my current college only offers more management oriented masters level degrees, and I want something that is programming, not business. Ultimately my goal is to teach online and work freelance on the side. Here's the problem - I am visually impaired, so I do not drive and I prefer to take my classes entirely online. I have heard enough to avoid university of phoenix... and I have heard some good about walden, regis, and penn state's online MSSE programs. I am wondering if anyone here knows of any other good ones, or ones I should avoid. I have heard mixed reviews of Colorado Tech.

sharepoint online quick launch

Hello, we are converting from sharepoint 2003 to sharepoint on line. I am having trouble reproducing a specific behavior in the online version. If a choose a list, I get a "select a view" navigation on the left hand side of the page showing the available views. When a new view is created, it automatically appears on this navigation list. In the online sharepoint, instead there is a view dropdown. I know I can manually setup links on the quick launch but I'm looking for an automatic way to do this. Can the online sharepoint be set up so that when views are added they automatically appear as left-hand links? Or can the "views" dropdown be moved to the left side which would be an acceptable work around? Please note I am unfamiliar with SP designer and I do work with .NET but I dont want to go that route just for this issue - thanks.

calling a service from an activity

Hi,I have been stuck on this issue for quite some time now.Have read the documentation and many tutorials and they just confuse me more.I hope someone will provide me a straightforward answer.It's really important.Thank you.. Ok ..so i want an activity to get some input from the user as and then send that string to a service.Then i want my service to run in a way so that i can use other applications while this one keeps running in the background.Also i don't want the service to keep running every second.What i want is for the service to get updated location of my current position every 10 minutes so i was thinkin if there could be a way to make my service to go to sleep n wake up evry 10 mins n check for updates.I don't want to show the update on the UI so i dont think i need to use an AIDL approach and also dont need to bind to the service.I js simply want to start the service as soon as the user enters the string and keep the service runing every 10 mins.I think it is really simple but m very confused.Please help.
