  • Understanding the Microsoft Public License (MS-PL)

    - by J.r. Hounddog
I'm looking at using a few open source products in a commercial software application I'm working on. One of them is licensed under MIT, which I understand as allowing commercial software linking. However, the other open source product is licensed under MS-PL but I don't understand if that license is fully compatible with commercial software. So the question is, can I use MS-PL licensed OSS in a commercial/proprietary/for-sale application? Thanks.

  • Ralink Bluetooth not working in Ubuntu 13.04

    - by Sourabh
My Bluetooth is not working in Ubuntu 13.04. I am unable to turn it on and also, Bluetooth icon doesn't show up in the top bar. I asked about this on #ubuntu IRC and they said that I am missing the proprietary drivers for it. There is nothing under Additional Drivers in Software and Updates Bluetooth does work 'Try Ubuntu mode' when I boot Ubuntu from DVD/USB. How can I get the required drivers?

  • Dual nVidia GPUs (3 monitors) not working in 11.10

    - by jasonmclose
after searching I have not found a solution. I have 2 nvidia quadro 295 cards with 3 monitors but I can not extend twinview across multiple GPUs. I have the most recent nvidia proprietary drivers installed, and they work fine for the single GPU / dual monitors. I tried using xinerama, but without success. I don't mind switching to the nouveau drivers if that would handle my multiple monitors, although I would like to continue to use unity and compiz if i can).

  • How do I determine whether bumblebee is working as expected?

    - by Christian Fazzini
I followed the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update Instead of installing the proprietary nvidia drivers, via: sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia linux-headers-generic I did: sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends bumblebee linux-headers-generic How do I determine that power savings mode is active and that my dedicated GPU isn't running? One thing that bugs me is that if I go to System Settings - Details - Graphics. Driver is shown as Unknown.

  • Java Cloud Service for developers

    - by JuergenKress
The advent of cloud computing has reinvented application development for many companies. “That’s the beauty of the cloud,” says Cameron Purdy, vice president of development, Oracle. “It dramatically improves developer productivity because they can do what they do best without having to manage complex development, testing, staging, and production environments.” The key is to find a platform that doesn’t impose proprietary restrictions or force developers to learn new tools. For example, Oracle Java Cloud Service is an enterprise-grade platform as a service for building and deploying Java EE, Oracle WebLogic Server, and Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF) applications. “It’s designed to be flexible and easy to use,” says Purdy. “And it is also a standards-based solution -it’s not proprietary and there is no cloud lock-in. Developers get instant access to an enterprise-grade environment for a simple, monthly subscription.” Oracle Java Cloud Service instances are created with just a few clicks, so businesses can create a rich application development environment within minutes. Running on Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Exalogic, the underlying infrastructure also leverages Oracle Fusion Middleware’s integration with common services. For example, instances come integrated and preconfigured with optimized Oracle Database and Oracle Identity Management configurations. Based on Oracle Enterprise Manager, the Oracle Java Cloud Service console lets customers easily manage and monitor their Oracle Java Cloud Service instances. The open nature of the Oracle Java Cloud Service lets developers integrate through Web services such as SOAP and REST APIs, as well as use their favorite developer tools, whether they are out-of-the-box tools such as Maven and Ant or the productivity features built into Oracle JDeveloper, Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, or NetBeans IDE. The service allows for the seamless movement of applications between on-premise Oracle WebLogic Server domains and instances of Oracle Java Cloud Service within Oracle Cloud. This approach allows flexibility to mix and match the use of on-premise environments with cloud instances for development, test, and production environments. • Why are graphics so slow/jerky/lagged with an ATI 4250?

    - by Ben
Never had a problem with Maverick, always very fast. I upgrade to Natty and the graphics seem to be very lagged. CPU, load, and memory usage is low, all graphics are choppy and lagged though. I have the proprietary driver installed and everything. Alt-Tabbing takes 3-5 seconds for the dialog to popup, zooming in with compiz zoom makes things very slow. I never had any of these problems with 10.10 Thanks

  • GPL licensed software installed on commercial hardware

    - by Alexander Reshytko
Do vendors need to provide sources, at the customer's request, for GPL licensed software installed on the hardware they sell? For example, a vendor sells an IPTV box and pre-installs some proprietary software product which is linked with some GPLed library. As a consequence, the software becomes GPLed itself. Does the vendor need to provide the source code for it? The vendor doesn't sell that software, he sells hardware.

  • Dual monitor ATI hd 4350 (1GB PCI-e), ubuntu 12.04 (pear Linux) Do I need the ATI driver or open source?

    - by Geeve
I think I covered it in the title, Right now both monitors are mirrored (both 19" at 1440x900). I guess what I need to know is do I need the ATI proprietary driver or will the open source driver from Ubuntu (additional drivers) work? I want to expand the desktop between the two monitors. Still finishing install and running updates now, I just wanted to gather all documentation and downloads prior to doing what is necessary. Thanks Geeve

    - by elivanja

I would appreciate any help since I haven't been able to find anyone with the same problem, thanks.

  • Is there a driver like this for Windows XP too?

    - by ptikobj
In Ubuntu, there is a modified non-proprietary Nvidia driver preinstalled. This driver helps me get the full native resolution (1920x1020) of my flatscreen displayed without errors, while my Graphics Card (Geforce FX 5200) only supports DVI-resolutions up to 1440x900. This is a very cool thing. My question is: Is there such a kind of driver also for Windows XP? I've already tried the omega drivers, but 1920x1020 looks awful on Windows.

  • Uninstall libgl? Program using libgl instead of Nvidia's OpenGL libraries

    - by Tek
I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit. I'm trying to get valve's new Linux Steam client running, but having a bit of trouble getting it to detect the right libraries or at least I think that's the issue. I installed the latest 310.19 Nvidia proprietary drivers from geforce.com. Here's the screenshot: I tried uninstalling xserver-xorg-video-nouveau thinking this was the problem but I'm still getting the same error. Any ideas what I can do for Steam to detect the right Nvidia OpenGL libraries?

  • How to find out the installation path to my browser?

    - by rumtscho
I am installing a proprietary CAD application (MEDUSA4 personal) and the installer wants to know the path to my web browser (as a prerequisite for online help). I have the default firefox installation and chromium, but I don't know the installation path for any of them, and couldn't find them among the usual suspects (/usr/bin, /usr/lib). It would be nice if you could tell me the path to one of them, and even nicer if you can tell me how to find out the installation path to any package managed by apt.

  • Nvidia R310 Drivers break Starcraft

    - by user19192
I was originally using the latest proprietary Nvidia drivers from nvidia-current, after upgrading the new R310 drivers my system works fine, but Starcraft 2 won't run anymore. (I'm running it through play-on-linux) I get that the application has attempted to load the C runtime library incorrectly and that DirectX failed to initialize. Previously, executing echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope would fix the problem, but does no longer work. Any ideas? Or do I have to downgrade back to nvidia-current drivers.
