  • What constitutes a programming language and how does one copyright a programming language?

    I've decided to create a programming language of my own, mostly just for fun. However, I got interested in the legal aspect of it all. You can, for example, licence specific programs under specific terms. However, how do you go about licensing a language? Also, by that I don't just mean the implementation of the language (compiler & VM), but the standard itself. Is there something else to a programming language I'm missing? What I would like to achieve by such licensing: Make it completely FOSS (can a language even be FOSS, or is that the implementation that can be FOSS?) Establish myself as the author (can you legally be an author of a language? Or, again, just the implementation?) Make it so that anyone implementing my language would be required to attribute me (MIT-style. Please note that I do not have any hopes for anyone actually ever doing that though, I'm just learning.) I think that the solution would be to separately license the VM and the compiler for my language, as "the official implementation", and then license the design document as the language itself. What exactly am I missing here?

  • Using Groovy as a scripting language...

    I prefer to use scripting languages for short tasks, anything such as a really simple http bot, bulk importing/exporting data to/from somewhere, etc etc... Basic throw-away scripts and simple stuff. The point being, that a scripting language is just an efficient tool to write quick programs with. As for my understanding of Groovy at this point... If you were to program in Groovy, and you wan't to write a quick script, wouldn't you be forced to going back to regular java syntax (and we know how that can be convoluted compared to a scripting language) in order to do anything more complicated? For example, if I want to do some http scripting, wouldn't I just be right back at using java syntax to invoke Commons HttpClient? To me, the point of a scripting language is for quickly typed and less forced constructs. And here is another thing, it doesn't seem that there is any incentive for groovy based libraries to be developed when there are already so many good java one's out there, thus making groovy appear to be a Java dependent language with minor scripting features. So right now I am wondering if I could switch to Groovy as a scripting language or continue to use a more common scripting language such as Perl, Python or Ruby.

    I am not completely sure if this is the right place to put this question, but since it's the programming thread I guessed that there's many experienced programmers here. :) Ok, hello! My name is Andreas and I am a 16 years old guy from Norway. For some time now I've wanted to learn a programming language. Six months ago I started learning C++, but quit withing a week due to lack of motivation. The same thing happend only 2 months ago when I tried to learn Lua. I wanted to program mods to the game Garry's mod, and was really motivated. Then I stopped playing the game, and the programming stopped with it. Today though I am ready again. The only difference is that I am not completely sure what I want to do with the language. I only want to create something, and I miss the progress of failing and enduring hard work until I finally solve the problem I've worked on for hours. What I am trying to say is; Is there any program out there that allows me, a complete noob (I didn't learn that much in a week, so I like to call myself a beginner), to create apps, mods or something similar but at the same time being qualified as a first time language? I was thinking of Java, because Android, Minecraft and many other applications and games use it. But I've heard that it is going to be replaced by a program called HTML 5 (whatever that is), is this true? I certainly don't want to spend many hours of my life on something that is useless in a year or two. Hopefully I didn't make this too complicated. I know that it is hard to recommend something when I don't have a goal, but I really don't know what to say.     I want to returns matches from a regular expression string. The regex string is: (?<TICKER>[A-Z]+)(?<SPACE>\\s)(?<MONTH_ALPHA_ABBREV>Jan|Feb|Mar|Apr|May|Jun|Jul|Sep|Oct|Nov|Dec)(?<SPACE>\\s)(?<DAY>\\d+)(?<SPACE>\\s)(?<YEAR_LONG>[2][0][0-9][0-9])(?<SPACE>\\s)(?<STRIKE_DOLLAR>\\d+(?=[.]))[.](?<STRIKE_DECIMAL>(?<=[.])\\d+)(?<SPACE>\\s)(?<PUTCALL_LONG>Call|Put) And I want to get matches for all of the group names and all of the items within square brackets (including the square brackets) outside of open and closed parenthesis. I have this regex: ((?<=[<])([A-Z]|[_])+(?=[>]))|(\\[.\\]) But this returns square bracket items within the parenthesis. To be more specific these are the matches I want from the regex at the top (keep in mind this needs to be flexible for any regex): TICKER SPACE MONTH_ALPHA_ABBREV SPACE DAY SPACE YEAR_LONG SPACE STRIKE_DOLLAR [.] STRIKE_DECIMAL SPACE PUTCALL_LONG

  • Login window language has changed after update on Snow Leopard

    After the latest update (beginning of Dec. 2012) on Snow Leopard my login window language has changed. My system is set to be in english but the login windows now is in french. Currently I am in France so I suspect that during the update something has revealed my location and installed something in the locale of the current location. It doesn't seem fair to me, I want to switch it back to english but I couldn't find a way to do it.

I installed the Turkish language pack from Windows Update but some texts like "Welcome" "Shutting Down" and "Starting Windows" are still in English, but the others are translated into Turkish correctly. Did anyone face with this problem?

However, when I insert captions and cross references, the labels are in italian. For example Tabella instead of Table. What should I change in order to have the proper labeling, besides installing an English version of LibreOffice Writer??

Basically, I need an algorithm for doing what I do to generate a regex search string from some pattern. My purpose for this to create a list of potential regular expressions from a selection of text and order that list from least specific (i.e. string of characters with abitrary length) to most specific (i.e. the string itself) to be used in text editor.

  • Big problem with regular expression in Lex (lexical analyzer)

    Hi, I have some content like this: author = "Marjan Mernik and Viljem Zumer", title = "Implementation of multiple attribute grammar inheritance in the tool LISA", year = 1999 author = "Manfred Broy and Martin Wirsing", title = "Generalized Heterogeneous Algebras and Partial Interpretations", year = 1983 author = "Ikuo Nakata and Masataka Sassa", title = "L-Attributed LL(1)-Grammars are LR-Attributed", journal = "Information Processing Letters" And I need to catch everything between double quotes for title. My first try was this: ^(" "|\t)+"title"" "*=" "*"\"".+"\"," Which catches the first example, but not the other two. The other have multiple lines and that's the problem. I though about changing to something with \n somewhere to allow multiple lines, like this: ^(" "|\t)+"title"" "*=" "*"\""(.|\n)+"\"," But this doesn't help, instead, it catches everything. Than I though, "what I want is between double quotes, what if I catch everything until I find another " followed by ,? This way I could know if I was at the end of the title or not, no matter the number of lines, like this: ^(" "|\t)+"title"" "*=" "*"\""[^"\""]+"," But this has another problem... The example above doesn't have it, but the double quote symbol (") can be in between the title declaration. For instance: title = "aaaaaaa \"X bbbbbb", And yes, it will always be preceded by a backslash (\). Any suggestions to fix this regexp?

    I want to split the /n from my string in Java. For example, I have one String field which has 2 lines space ( /n). I have to find out lines ( wherever mopre than one lines is coming) and should replace with one line spaces. "This is Test Message thanks Zubair " From the above example, there are more spaces between "This is Test Message" and "thanks". So i want to reduce as only one line instead of 2 lines.How to do that?

    Hello again Stackoverflow people! Assume I have these words: smartphones, smartphone I want to match the substring "phone" from within them. However, in both case, I want only "phone" to be returned, not "phones" in the first case. In addition to this, I want matches only if the word "phone" is a suffix only, such that: fonephonetics (just an example) is not matched. I assumed that the regex (phone([?=s])?)\b would give me what I need, but it is currently matching "phones" and "phone", but not the "fonephonetics" one. I don't need "phones". I want "phone" for both cases. Any ideas about what is wrong, and what I can do? Thank you in advance!

    Is there a differnet between ^[a-zA-Z] or [^a-zA-Z]? When I check in C#, Regex.IsMatch("t", "^[a-zA-Z]") // Return true (I think it's correct) Regex.IsMatch("t", "[^a-zA-Z]") // Return false There are alot of web site using [^a-zA-Z] for alphabet. I'm not really sure which one is correct answer. Could someone please shed the light?

  • Regular Expression - Match only 7 chars?

    I'm trying to match a SEDOL (exactly 7 chars: 6 alpha-numeric chars followed by 1 numeric char) My regex ([A-Z 0-9]{6})[0-9]{1} matches correctly but strings greater than 7 chars that begin with a valid match also match (if you see what I mean :)). For example: B3KMJP4 matches correctly but so does: B3KMJP4x which shouldn't match. Can anyone show me how to avoid this?
