  • How to elevate engineering culture at large corporations?

    One thing I have realized working at a large corporation is that it doesn't matter how smart you are because if everyone else doesn't see the value in what you are doing then you are not going to get very far. It's much harder to convince 1000 people that a certain part of the software stack should be in groovy than it is to convince 10 people of the same thing. I'm curious how people go about elevating the engineering culture at large corporations because I've been running into walls left and right and I would like to be more proactive about how I go about it. I have been advocating tech talks and tech demos along with code reviews as potential solutions. Do people have other suggestions? Note that 1000 people and groovy are just representative examples. I am not married to groovy or any other language and 1000 people is meant to indicate large scale and how to go about teaching a large group of people about best practices and engineering principles in general.

    This is a question that has been bothering me for some time now. I have asked people and have always got mixed replies. It also has to do with how I will start my career. So here goes: Can an entry level software engineer directly get a job in a security engineering position? I am a graduate student in software engineering with a lot of course work in security as well, including web application, network and mobile security. I want to know if in the current industry, can an entry level engineer take the risk to prepare towards finding a security related position, or is it always necessary for a year or 2 development experience before one should think about finding a security position.     I have found this code for reverse geocoding: var point = new GLatLng (lat[1],long[1]); var geocoder = new GClientGeocoder(); geocoder.getLocations (point, function(result) { alert (lat[1]+' '+long[1]+' '+result.address); }); But it pops the alert, saying that result.address is 'undefined'. Any ideas, what could be the problem?

    What would be the best approach to reverse a large text file that is uploaded asynchronously to a servlet that reverses this file in a scalable and efficient way? text file can be massive (gigabytes long) can assume mulitple server/clustered environment to do this in a distributed manner. open source libraries are encouraged to consider I was thinking of using Java NIO to treat file as an array on disk (so that I don't have to treat the file as a string buffer in memory).     Hi, I wish to reverse engineer any web-page into a logical representation of the page. For example, if a web page has a menu, then I want a logical menu structure perhaps in XML. If the webpage has an article, I want a article XML node, if it has a title for the article I want a title XML node. Basically, I want the logical form of the web-page without any of the user interface. This logical model could either be objects in code or XML it doesn't matter, the important part is that it has identified what everything on the page means.

  • How to diagnose, and reverse (not prevent) Unicode mangling

    Somewhere upstream of me, "something" happened that looks like unicode mangling. One symptom is that a lowercase u umlaut (ü) gets converted to "ü" (ie, character FC gets converted to C3 BC). Assuming that I have no control over this upstream process, how can I reverse-engineer what's going on? And if that is possible, can I crank the sausage machine backwards and get the original text back? (If it helps to understand this case, the text I received was in the form of a MySQL dump. I think somwewhere in the dump/transport process it got mangled.)

    Hi Alls, I would like to build a small python script that basicaly does the reverse of grep. I want to match the files in a directory/subdirectory that doesn't have a "searched_string". So far i've done that: import os filefilter = ['java','.jsp'] path= "/home/patate/code/project" for path, subdirs, files in os.walk(path): for name in files: if name[-4:] in filefilter : print os.path.join(path, name) This small script will be listing everyfiles with "java" or "jsp" extension inside each subdirectory, and will output them full path. I'm now wondering how to do the rest, for example i would like to be able if I forgot a session management entry in one file (allowing anyone a direct file access), to search for : "if (!user.hasPermission" and list the file which does not contain this string. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks

  • IIS7 and ARR as reverse proxy for Subversion

    I am using IIS7 and the Application Request Routing extension to act as a reverse proxy to Subversion running on Apache. The proxy works fine and I am able to explore the server, and even perform a "check out". However, I cannot browse to files that would normally be forbidden by ASP.NET - for example, .cs, .csproj, and so on. Files ASP.NET wouldn't be concerned with - such as .txt - are fine. I tried to edit the global web.config to remove the Forbidden handler mapping for these files, but it did not seem to make a difference. Is there any way to allow the URL rewriting module in IIS7 to work, while allowing all file extensions to be rendered?

  • Reverse Search Best Practices?

    I'm making an app that has a need for reverse searches. By this, I mean that users of the app will enter search parameters and save them; then, when any new objects get entered onto the system, if they match the existing search parameters that a user has saved, a notification will be sent, etc. I am having a hard time finding solutions for this type of problem. I am using Django and thinking of building the searches and pickling them using Q objects as outlined here: http://www.djangozen.com/blog/the-power-of-q The way I see it, when a new object is entered into the database, I will have to load every single saved query from the db and somehow run it against this one new object to see if it would match that search query... This doesn't seem ideal - has anyone tackled such a problem before?
