• MySQL server with website hosting with managed hosting

  I work for a small business, and I am the "IT Department". I also happen to be a summer intern, so after I leave the number of IT staff will be 0 for an indefinite period of time. I need a place where I can reliably put up the company's website as well as the mySQL+PHP backend. Good redundancy is a plus, as well as easy administration for my IT-challenged colleagues. Managed hosting would be good, so the PHP versions can update without my company having to hire an admin. EDIT: The company already has a mySQL+PHP server running locally which hosts the existing website. My assignment is to find a remote server where the latest versions of mySQL+PHP will be maintained and where there is a very small chance of unintended downtime. Can you recommend anything?

• Host Matching Interview Tips?

  So I've gotten past the technical interviews for a company, and now I'm having an interview with my potential host for an internship during the summer. What are some tips for interviews like these? I know they're not really technical, but I'm not sure what exactly they are meant to gauge. Any tips on what to say, how to show my interest in the project, questions I should ask, etc.? Edit: Side question: What's a good synonym for the word "interesting" or "interested"? I find that I use those words a bit too often (e.g. "I'm definitely interested in working on the front-end!" or "Yeah, that sounds really interesting, I would love learning more about it." or "Those all sound really interesting, I'm definitely interested in all of them!", etc.)... but I can't seem to find any good synonyms. (Online sites don't really give me good synonyms.) Any ideas?

• The Star Wars That I Used To Know [Video]

  Run away hit Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye is on track to become the tune of the summer; this extremely well executed parody replaces the subject of a lover scorned with a Star Wars fan scorned (with quite entertaining results). Courtesy of Teddie Films, the 5 minute parody video faithfully recreates the music and set of the Gotye video but layers over plenty of Star Wars references and some rather subtle (and not so subtle) jabs at where the Star Wars franchise has gone in recent years. We were standing around in a hangar as the Team prepared for the Chicago Air and Water Show, chatting about the engineering and design of the Oracle Challenger III aerobatic plane. • RESTful Java on Steroids (Parleys, Podcast, ...)

  As reported previously here, the JAX-RS 2.0 (JSR 339) expert group is making good progress. If you're interested in what the future holds for RESTful Java web services, you can now watch Marek's Devoxx presentation or listen to him in the latest Java Spotlight Podcast (#74). Marek discusses the new client API, filters/handlers, BeanValidation integration, Hypermedia support (HATEOAS), server-side async processing and more. With JSR 339's Early Draft Review 2 currently out, another draft review is planned for April, the public review should be available in June while the final draft is currently scheduled for the end of the summer. In short, expect completion sometime before the end of 2012.

• Is MediaTemple's (gs) really worth the hassle? [closed]

  I have been hosting my sites with Dreamhost for a while, and although none of them are high-trafic atm, I am going to a launch a Rails app this summer and a couple of other stuff, so I need a serious host. Since my plan ends in a couple of days, I have been looking at alternatives, and because MT has such a good reputation in the webdesign world, I have been seriously considering paying the ridiculous 20$/month for its shared hosting services. That was until I actually read some reviews of it, most of which indicated it is slow and overpriced. So now I'm wondering whether switching over to (gs) would really be a good idea, or if I would be better off paying less money for something like a Site5 or Hostgator shared hosting plan. What is your experience with MT, and particularly their Grid Service? Do you think I should even switch to (gs) in the first place, or should I choose something else from its competitors?

  As a summer project I decided it would be fun to make a Flash game. Right now I'm going for something like the look of Terraria. It's been a lot of fun, but today I've hit a snag. I need a way to generate my worlds. I've read up Perlin noise as a possibility, but I my attempts have given me sporadic looking results. What are some techniques used to generate these 2D tile-based worlds? Ideally I would like to be able to generate mountains, plains, and caves.

• Visiting China

  This summer I had the chance to visit China.  My brother and his wife are living in China and teaching English.  I spent a little over two weeks in Shanghai, Suzhou and Yancheng.  During that time I wrote some detailed updates for family and a few close friends on the impressions of a good Midwestern kid visiting the Middle Kingdom. I dumped them all into one document, did a little editing and now they’re posted.  You can download it here.  Below you can see my futile attempts to eat using chopsticks and me posing as a tourist on Nanjing Road in Shanghai.  The only thing I can say about chopsticks is that I didn’t starve.

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview? I am entering my senior year next year and stumbled upon this certificate program for web development from Hunter College: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/ce/certificates/computer/web-programming So the question is, would it be beneficial for me to complete this program or to just attend a few elective courses in the summer at a school such as NYU? Would this certificate be good for my resume? • I want to master ASP.NET - What concepts should I focus on/What concepts do you most value?

  I start a job this summer doing work in ASP.NET 4 (C#). I plan on working with some legacy code as well as MVC. I want to get a running start. I have good understanding of HTML/CSS/Javascript, and pretty good understanding of C# itself, Design principles, Design Patterns, and understand masterpages, basic MVC2, and code behinds for web forms. In your opinion what aspects of ASP.NET are the most important to master for web applications? What do you value most in your usage of ASP.NET? Do you have a recommendation for understanding the internals of ASP.NET itself?

• Welcome to my first official full time employee!

  The last few months have been pretty manic and Vizioz has been growing successfully into a fully fledged development agency. I have been working with a couple of excellent off shore developers who I would like to publicly thank for all their hard work over the last couple of months!This week has been the start of a new era for Vizioz, I have taken on my first full time developer who is now based in our office in Reading, welcome to Colin. Which means we now have 3 Umbraco developers! Currently one with Level 2 qualification (me) but if business keeps growing I'll be sending the others for training shortly so hopefully by the end of the summer we'll be a certified solution provider.We have lots of plans for the next 6 months, so it should be exciting times, subscribe to my RSS feed to come along for the ride :)

I'm planning to take up an Online Certification in web programming or .NET programming from the University of Illinois through O'Reilly (see link) to keep busy this summer. Will that help me get a great job? I've heard some say that certifications will give you a cutting edge. I've heard others say that it doesn't really matter. What do you think?
