  • What am I doing wrong for this submenu to not appear?

    - by Doug
    I'm new to jQuery, so please bear with me. I'm trying to make my submenu appear on hover. The second set of <ul> is for submenu. $(document).ready(function(){ $('ul.menu.li').hover( function() { $('ul', this).css('display', 'block'); }, function() { $('ul', this).css('display', 'none'); }); }); <ul id="menu"> <li><a href="#">Item 1</a><li> <ul> <li>Hi</li> </ul> <li><a href="#">Item 2</a></li> </ul>

  • Coldfusion - taking a Serialized String and converting it to a Structure

    - by nobosh
    I have the following serialized string from a nested sortable list: ul[0][id]=main1&ul[0][children][0][id]=child2&ul[0][children][0][class]=&ul[1][id]=main3&ul[2][id]=main4&ul[3][id]=main5 I want to be able to record this in the database, and think I need a structure to do this. What's the best way to turn this into a structure, so I can sort it in the database, and easily render the list on the page in the future. Thanks,B

  • How to apply different CSS style to child elements as they occur inside one another?

    - by Starx
    For example my HTML is this <ul> <li>Sample 1</li> <li>Sample 2 <ul> <li>Sub 1</li> <li>Sub 2</li> <li>Sub 3 <ul> <li>Grandsub 1</li> <li>Grandsub 2</li> <li>Grandsub 3 <ul> <li>verySub 1</li> <li>verySub 2</li> </ul> </li> </ul> </li> </ul> </li> <li>Sample 3</li> </ul> I want to use different styles on every child <UL> without defining any class or id on them. I dont know how many child <ul> might occur inside one another so inline css will not to the job Is this possible?

  • How to find the closest descendants (that matches a selector) with jQuery?

    - by powerboy
    We can use closest(selector) to find the first ancestor element that matches the selector. It travels up the DOM tree until it finds a match for the selector. But what if I want to travels down the DOM tree until it finds a match for the selector? Is there any jQuery function for doing this? Or do I need to implement this using breadth-first search? Give an example. For the DOM tree below, <div id="main"> <div> <ul><!-- I want to match this ul --> <li> <ul><!-- but not this ul --> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul><!-- and match this ul --> </ul> </div> </div> how to do something like $('#main').closestDescendants('ul')?

  • content_tag_for a collection in Rails?

    - by Nick
    I have a Post model. Posts have many Comments. I want to generate a <ul> element for post.comments using content_tag_for. Ideally, it'd produce <ul id="comments_post_7" class="comments"> ... </ul> where 7 is the ID of the Post. The closest I can get uses <% content-tag-for :ul post, :comments do %> which produces <ul id="comments_post_7" class="post"> ... </ul> which is pretty close, except for the class="post". Using :class => :comments in the content_tag_for yields class="post comments", but I just want class="comments". It seems logical that I'd be able to use something like <% content_tag_for :ul post.comments do %> but, sadly, that yields <ul id="array_2181653100" class="array"> ... </ul> I've searched far and wide. I feel like I'm missing some elegant way to do this. Am I? Because, seriously, <ul id="comments_post_<%= post.id %>" class="comments"> is painful.

  • drop down menu will not display outside containing div in IE7..

    - by playahabana
    I am tearing my hair out over this, I have a dropdown menu using CSS and jQuery (thanks to Soh Tanaka) and it works perfectly in Firefox, Safari, Google chrome and I.E. 8, but in IE 7 it will not drop down outside the 'Banner div'. It drops below the nav div however. I have moved the nav div higher in the banner the result is the same, menu drops until it reaches the border of the banner div and then vanishes.... Below is the css. This is my first website and I have some limited understanding of what I am doing. The drop down menu includes transparent png's as links (I know, I know...but it's what the Boss wants...) please could someone take a quick scan at the below CSS and let me know what is wroong? Is this some form of the IE z-index bug? i have tried all different combinations of z-index and still I can't get a different result. . The html is below as well. Thankyou in advance #banner { position: relative; width: 62.5em; height: 12em; background-color: #46280A; background-image: url('images/includes/banner2.jpg'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center; -moz-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; -webkit-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; /* For IE 8 */ -ms-filter: "progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000')"; /* For IE 5.5 - 7 */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000'); z-index: 1; } /*------------------------------------SCROLLER---------------------------------------------*/ #headlines{ position: absolute; top: 1.3em; right: 2.75em; overflow: hidden; height: 2.5em; width: 24em; background-color: #000000; display: block; z-index: 3; } #news{ position: relative; height: 3.1em; line-height: 2.5em; font-size: 0.8em color: #FFFF99; white-space: nowrap; overflow: hidden; font-family: Georgia,Arial; } #scrollerglass{ position: absolute; top: 0.95em; right: 2em; height: 52px; width: 410px; border: none; padding: 0.2em 0em 0em 0em; line-height: 0.7em; text-align: center; background-image: url('images/includes/scrollerglass.png'); background-color: transparent; background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center; opacity: 20; z-index: 10; } #scrollerglass a i { visibility: hiddn ; } /-------------------------------------NAVIGATION-----------------------------------------/ #nav { position: absolute; top: 5.8em; left: 0.2em; font-family: trebuchet, sans-serif; font-size: 1em; line-height: 3.75em; text-align: center; color: #FFFF00; z-index: 3; } ul.navlist { list-style: none; padding: 0em; margin: 1em; float: left; width: 62.5em; background: transparent; font-size: 1em; } ul.navlist li { position: relative; /*--Declare X and Y axis base for sub navigation--*/ float: left; margin: 0em 1.4em; padding: 0em 0.7em 0em 0em; z-index: 1; } ul.navlist li a{ display: block; text-decoration: none; float: left; border: 0px solid; } ul.navlist li img{ border: 0px solid; } ul.navlist li span { trigger styles--*/ width: 1.2em; height: 5.25em; float: left; background: url(images/links/downlogo.png) no-repeat center top; } ul.navlist li span.subhover { background-position: center bottom; cursor: pointer; } ul.navlist li ul.navdrop { list-style: none; position: absolute; float: left; top: 5.3em; left: -2.4em; height: 15.0em; width: 11.25em; margin: 0; padding: 0.5em 0em 0em 0em; display: none; background-position: center; background-image: url('images/includes/slider.jpg'); background-color: transparent; background-repeat: no-repeat; -moz-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; -webkit-box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; box-shadow: -4px 6px 8px #000; /* For IE 8 */ -ms-filter: "progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000')"; /* For IE 5.5 - 7 */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Shadow(Strength=8, Direction=225, Color='#000000'); z-index:1; } ul.navlist li ul.navdrop li{ margin: 0em 2.3em 0em 0em; padding: 1em 0em 0em 0em; width: 8em; clear: both; } html ul.navlist li ul.navdrop li a { border: 0px solid; width: 11.25em; } html ul.navlist li ul.navdrop li a:hover { background: transparent; } <div id="banner"> <div id="headlines"> <div id="news"> Whatever we want to promote </div> </div> <div id="scrollerglass"> <a href="vintagecigars.php"> <i>------s-c-r-o-l-l-e-r - - - -l-i-n-k-s--------<br /> <br>------s-c-r-o-l-l-e-r - - - -l-i-n-k-s------</i></a> </div> <div id="nav"> <ul class="navmenu"> <li><a href="index.php"><img src="images/links/home.png" alt="Home" ></a></li> <li><a href="ourbar.php"><img src="images/links/ourbar.png" alt="Our Bar" ></a> <ul class="navdrop"> <li ><a href="ourcocktails.php"><img src="images/links/cockteles.png" alt="Our Cocktails" ></a></li> <li ><a href="celebrate.php"><img src="images/links/celebrate.png" alt="Celebrate in Style" ></a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="ourcigars.php"><img src="images/links/ourcigars.png" alt="Our Cigars" ></a> <ul class="navdrop"> <li ><a href="edicioneslimitadas.php"><img src="images/links/edicioneslimitadas.png" alt="Edition Limitadas" ></a></li> <li ><a href="cigartasting.php"><img src="images/links/cigartasting.png" alt="Cigar Tastings" ></a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="personalroller.php"><img src="images/links/personalcigar.png" alt="Personal Cigar Roller" ></a></li> <li><a href="galleryentrance.php"><img src="images/links/photogallery.png" alt="Photo Gallery" ></a></li> <li><a href="contactus.php"><img src="images/links/contactus.png" alt="Contact Us" ></a></li> </ul></div></div><!--end banner-->

    Following DOM structure: <ul> <li class="item">yes</li> <li>no</li> <li class="item">yes</li> <li> <ul> <li class="item">no</li> </ul> </li> </ul> Assuming I have the outer <ul> in $ul. How do I get the two immediate children which have the item-class? In jQuery I would write something like this: $ul.children().filter(".item") $ul.children(".item") $ul.find("> .item") How do I to this with Prototype? • Help with Collapse and Expand Accordion at same time using JQuery (demo)

    - by Evan
    I'm stuck on an Expand/Collapse accordion using JQuery. After the initial headline is clicked and it expands, if you click to another headline it will collapse the former headline completely FIRST then it will expand the headline you clicked. This collapse first then expand second technique is very distracting and what should happen is as the headline is expanding it should collapse the initial headline. What am I missing? You can experience a demo here: http://media.apus.edu/it/evan-testing/accordion.htm Below is all my work Javascript <script src="http://www.apus.edu/bin/l/y/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> //<!-- $(document).ready(function() { $(".accordian>li.expanded").removeClass("expanded"); $(".accordian>li h2").addClass("jse").click(function() { var doOpen = !$(this).parent().hasClass('expanded'); var openContainers = $(".accordian>li.expanded").length>0; var targetNode = this; if(openContainers) { $(".accordian>li.expanded h2") .parent() .removeClass('expanded') .end() .nextAll() .slideUp(100,function(){ if($(".accordian>li.expanded").length==0) performOpen(doOpen,targetNode); }); } else { performOpen(doOpen,targetNode); } // if containers are open, proceed on callback // else proceed immediately }).nextAll().slideUp(100); }); function performOpen(doOpen,whichNode) { if(doOpen) { $('html,body').animate({scrollTop: $(whichNode).offset().top}, 1000); //target code $(whichNode).nextAll().slideDown(100).parent().addClass('expanded'); } } //--> </script> CSS <style> .accordian { list-style : none; padding : 0px; margin : 0px; font-size : 12px; } .accordian li { list-style : none; padding : 0px; margin : 0px; } .accordian li a:hover { text-decoration : underline; } .accordian li h2 { cursor : auto; text-decoration : none; padding : 0px 0px 4px 22px; } .accordian li h2.jse { background-image : url(http://www.apus.edu/bin/m/p/toggle_arrow.gif); background-position : 4px -35px; background-repeat : no-repeat; } .accordian li h2:hover { cursor : pointer; text-decoration : underline; } .accordian li li { margin-bottom : 5px; margin-left : 0px; margin-top : 0px; padding : 0px; } .accordian li p { display : block; padding-top : 0px; padding-bottom : 15px; padding-left : 10px; margin-left : 30px; margin-top : 0px; } .accordian li ul { margin-bottom : 30px; margin-top : 0px; padding-top : 0px; padding-left : 0px; margin-left : 0px; } .accordian li.expanded h2.jse { background-position : 4px -5px; } .accordianContainer { margin-top : 0px; padding-top : 0px; } .accordianContainer h2 { padding : 3px; } .accordian_nolist { list-style : none; } </style> HTML <table height="120"><tr><td>&nbsp;</td></tr></table> <div class="accordianContainer"> <ul class="accordian"> <li><h2>Title 1 Goes here -   • Internet Explorer and margins

    - by Hailwood
    Hi there. I have some pretty simple html which is meant to make a layout as below. To push the tabs down from the userbar I am using margin-top: 35px; However in internet explorer the tabs are completly misaligned(the top of the tabs is where the bottom should be). So I need to use margin-top: -50px; for internet explorer. Why is this and how can I fix it without using a ie specific stylesheet <div id="pageHead"> <div id="userBar"> <span class="bold">Hi Matthew Hailwood | <a href="#">Logout</a> </div> <a href="http://localhost/buzz/" id="pageLogo"></a> <div id="pageTabs" class="clearfix"> <ul> <li><a href="http://localhost/buzzil/templates">Templates</a></li> <li><a href="http://localhost/buzzil/messaging">Messaging</a></li> <li><a href="http://localhost/buzzil/contacts">Contacts</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> With the css being #pageHead { height: 100px; } #pageLogo { float: left; width: 149px; height: 77px; margin-top: 11px; background: transparent url('../images/logo.png') no-repeat; } #userBar { text-align: right; color: #fff; margin-top: 10px; } #userBar a:link, #userBar a:visited, #userBar a:active { font-weight: normal; color: #E0B343; text-decoration: none; } .clearfix:after { content: "."; display: block; clear: both; visibility: hidden; line-height: 0; height: 0; } .clearfix { display: inline-block; } html[xmlns] .clearfix { display: block; } * html .clearfix { height: 1%; } #pageTabs { float: right; margin-top: 35px; } #pageTabs ul { position: relative; width: 100%; list-style: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; border-left: 1px solid #000; } #pageTabs ul li { float: right; background: url(../images/tabsBg.png) no-repeat 0% 0%; border-left: 1px solid #000; margin-left: -1px; } #pageTabs ul li a:link, #pageTabs ul li a:visited, #pageTabs ul li a:active { color: #fff; background: url(../images/tabsBg.png) no-repeat 100% 0%; display: block; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 42px; text-transform: uppercase; padding: 4px 32px; text-decoration: none; } #pageTabs ul li a:hover, #pageTabs ul li a:focus { text-decoration: underline; }

  • Are there any drawbacks to class-based Javascript injection?

    A phenomena I'm seeing more and more of is Javascript code that is tied to a particular element on a particular page, rather than being tied to kinds of elements or UI patterns. For example, say we had a couple of animated menus on a page: <ul id="top-navigation"> ... </ul> <!-- ... --> <ul id="product-list"> ... </ul> These two menus might exist on the same page or on different pages, and some pages mightn't have any menus. I'll often see Javascript code like this (for these examples, I'm using jQuery): $(document).ready(function() { $('ul#top-navigation').dropdownMenu(); $('ul#product-selector').dropdownMenu(); }); Notice the problem? The Javascript is tightly coupled to particular instances of a UI pattern rather than the UI pattern itself. Now wouldn't it be so much simpler (and cleaner) to do this instead? - $(document).ready(function() { $('ul.dropdown-menu').dropdownMenu(); }); Then we can put the 'dropdown-menu' class on our lists like so: <ul id="top-navigation" class="dropdown-menu"> ... </ul> <!-- ... --> <ul id="product-list" class="dropdown-menu"> ... </ul> This way of doing things would have the following benefits: Simpler Javascript - we only need to attach once to the class. We avoid looking for specific instances that mightn't exist on a given page. If we remove an element, we don't need to hunt through the Javascript to find the attach code for that element. I believe techniques similar to this were pioneered by certain articles on alistapart.com. I'm amazed these simple techniques still haven't gained widespread adoption, and I still see 'best-practice' code-samples and Javascript frameworks referring directly to UI instances rather than UI patterns. Is there any reason for this? Is there some big disadvantage to the technique I just described that I'm unaware of?

  • How to make Dropdown menu using :hover on <a> in place of hover on <ul>?

    - by metal-gear-solid
    IE 6 only support :Hover on <a> then can we make css drop down using :hover on <a> http://htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/dropdowns/ This example use JavaScript to add hover on LI 'sfhover' class to li elements in the 'nav' id'd ul element when they are 'moused over' and removes it, using a regular expression, when 'moused out'. So now we've got the Suckerfish pumping out new classes, the next step is to simply duplicate the :hover selector with 'sfhover' class selectors:

  • Show/hide jQuery

    Not much experience with JavaScript, hopefully one of you gurus can help. <div id="themes"> <h2>Research Themes</h2> <ul> <li><a href="">Learn about our approach to the <strong>environment</strong></a><span><a href="#">Expand</a></span></li> <ul class="tier_2 hide"> <li><a href="">Project name numero uno goes here</a></li> <li><a href="">Project name numero dos goes here</a></li> <li><a href="">Project name numero tres goes here</a></li> </ul> <li><a href="">Learn about our approach to <strong>human health</strong></a><span><a href="#">Expand</a></span></li> <ul class="tier_2 hide"> <li><a href="">Project name numero uno goes here</a></li> <li><a href="">Project name numero dos goes here</a></li> <li><a href="">Project name numero tres goes here</a></li> </ul> <li class="last"><a href="">Learn about our approach to <strong>national defense</strong></a><span><a href="#">Expand</a></span></li> <ul class="tier_2 hide"> <li><a href="">Project name numero uno goes here</a></li> <li><a href="">Project name numero dos goes here</a></li> <li><a href="">Project name numero tres goes here</a></li> </ul> </ul> </div><!-- // end themes --> This is my markup. As you can see under each of the first tier of li's there are ul's with classes of tier_2 and hide. I've been trying to create some simple jQuery that on click will remove the hide class from it's child ul, but at the same time check that no other ul's with class of tier_2 are shown (aka the other's have the hide class). This should keep a visitor from expanding so many items at once that it will make the layout look funky. Just not sure how to accomplish this, any ideas?

  • Array of paths to html lists

    - by dmsk
    I wrote a recursive function, which returns an array with the paths to all files/folders in a given path. An array is already sorted and returns the exact information i want, but i struggle to display it properly in html lists. Array_of_paths = ( [0] => /path/to/folderA/ [1] => /path/to/folderA/subfolderAA/ [2] => /path/to/folderB/ [3] => /path/to/folderB/subfolderBB/ [4] => /path/to/folderB/subfolderBB/fileBB.txt [5] => /path/to/folderB/fileB.txt [6] => /path/to/folderC/ ... ) I want to put these paths in <ul>,<li> tags to see something like this: <ul> <li>/path/to/folderA/ <ul> <li>/path/to/folderA/folderAA/</li> </ul> </li> <li>/path/to/folderB <ul> <li>/path/to/folderB/subfolderBB/ <ul> <li>/path/to/folderB/subfolderBB/fileBB.txt</li> </ul> </li> <li>/path/to/folderB/fileB.txt</li> </ul> </li> <li>/path/to/folderC/</li> </ul> = /path/to/folderA/ /path/to/folderA/folderAA/ /path/to/folderB /path/to/folderB/subfolderBB/ /path/to/folderB/subfolderBB/fileBB.txt /path/to/folderB/fileB.txt /path/to/folderC/ I managed to find a couple of similars questions, but the answers were in Ruby language. So, what's the problem solving idea behind this?

    I have the following code: <ul class="cssdropdown"> <li class="headlink">RANGE <ul class="innerDrop"> <li>Range Child</li> <ul> <li> <li class="headlink">HOME <ul class="innerDrop"> <li>Home Child</li> <ul> <li> </ul> I'm trying to toggle the <ul class="innerDrop" with some jQuery. And I need to do it by adding a class the hide class which has display:none It hides fine, but when I click on the HOME or RANGE it opens both inner <li> when I just want the one to open. Here is my jQuery: $(document).ready(function(){ $('li.headlink ul').addClass('hide'); $('#header').append('<div class=\"showpersonal\" onclick=\"toggleMenu()\"></div>'); $('#header').append('<div class=\"showbusiness\" onclick=\"toggleMenu()\"></div>'); }); function toggleMenu() { $('li.headlink ul').toggleClass('hide', this); }

  • Cufon selector problems

    - by meep
    Hello StackOverflow. I am using Cufon (http://cufon.shoqolate.com/generate/) to replace some text in a menu. Problem is that I only need to style the first <li> of the first <ul>. I have tried using: Cufon.replace('#menu ul li > a', { fontFamily: 'Christopherhand', hover: { color: '#99c635'}}); With the > seperator, but it does not work. It still replaces the #menu ul li ul li a This is my markup: <div id="menu"> <ul> <li class="current"> <a href="#1">About JW</a> <ul> <li><a href="#2">Subpage 1</a></li> <li><a href="#3">Subpage 2</a></li> <li><a href="#4">Subpage 3</a></li> <li><a href="#5">Subpage 4</a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#2">Our Products</a></li> <li><a href="#3">Best Recipes</a></li> <li><a href="#4">Health &amp; Diet</a></li> <li><a href="#5">Our Ads</a></li> </ul> </div> Can anyone see the problem? It should work without adding a class to sub <ul>. :-) Thank you.

  • How can I restore the "auto" values with for list-style-type in nested unordered lists with CSS?

    - by Michael
    By default, an unstyled set of nested <ul> lists looks like this (in Chrome, Firefox, and IE at least): The top level has a list-style-type of disc, the next level is circle, and subsequent levels are square. If I include a stylesheet that changes the list-style-type to none, is there a simple way to revert back to the "automatic bullet types" later in the document? (e.g., override with a subsequent CSS definition or JavaScript style change) Basically, I'm looking for something like list-style-type: auto; (which is apparently not valid and has no effect): <style type="text/css"> ul { list-style-type: none; } ul { list-style-type: auto; } /* Does not work */ </style> Setting the list-style-type back to disc changes every bullet in the list and I no longer see different bullets at different levels, so that doesn't work either. Is the only way to accomplish this by explicitly defining styles for every level? e.g.: <style type="text/css"> ul { list-style-type: disc; } ul ul { list-style-type: circle; } ul ul ul { list-style-type: square; } </style>
