  • Sun Virtualbox: Cannot Install Windows 95 or 98

    - by c00lryguy
I'm running XP and I've tried to install Windows 95 and 98 with the official CDs in Virtualbox. Both of them give the error: FATAL: no bootable medium found! System Halted I've mounted the CD drives within Virtualbox and also tried to change the boot order so that the CD drive is first but to no avail. I don't understand exactly what's going on here.

  • Sharing VirtualBox snapshots

    - by JesperE
Is it possible to "share" a VirtualBox snapshot? I have a "baseline" VirtualBox machine, and I would like to be able to take a snapshot, and send it to another user which has the same baseline machine. The scenario is that the baseline machine is used for testing, and I want to allow testers to create snapshots which describe a certain system state, and send that snapshot to developers to further examination. EDIT: To clarify, I would like to be able to export snapshots "incrementally" without having to export the entire machine as an appliance.

  • Use bootable vhd with Virtualbox

    - by user18151
Hello, I want to create a bootable Windows 7 vhd using the steps mentioned at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=80ede31d-3509-407b-a896-0beea8705589&displaylang=en However, I wanted to know if I will be able to access the vhd using Virtualbox too. I intend to install VS2008 in the VM and use it in Virtualbox when doing quick work and on native hardware when doing a lot of work. I don't want to mess up my actual Win7 installation with VS2008 dev work.

  • VirtualBox imported VM - VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED - VERR_CFGM_VALUE_NOT_FOUND

    - by user40460
On VirtualBox, I've exported a Ubuntu Server VM (File \ Export Appliance) and tried to imported it on a different machine. every thing went well with export and import. But, when I start the imported VM, I get this VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED error VERR_CFGM_VALUE_NOT_FOUND. Its quite weird. If I ditch the Import process and straight away create a new VM and use the exported VMDK, it works fine!! Both machines are using the same version of VirtualBox (3.2.4 r62467) Any clues?

  • Importing VMware drive into VirtualBox drive

    - by Bry4n
I have VMware on my Mac and it crashed. I am unable to access the files used by the VMware. So I downloaded VirtualBox and when I try to add the .vmwarevm file to VirtualBox it says that its unable to read that type. I wasn't sure if there was a way i can get to these files as they are extremely important. I can not shutdown or open my virtual state in VMware whatsoever. Thoughts?

  • Unable to SSH to a virtualbox Redhat

    - by Rajat
I am using a MAC and using virtualbox to start a Redhat instance. The instance is started with two adapters (first being NAT, and second being host-only-adapter). The problem is that I am unable to SSH from my Mac to the virtualbox instance using the IP (I am able to ping the IP, though). I checked in the iptables and SSH is allowed (port 22), and sshd daemon is also running. Anything I am missing?

  • No output in Linux Keyboard Logger running in VirtualBox

    - by PabloG
I'm trying to run LKL (Linux Keyboard Logger) in a Ubuntu 9.04 VirtualBox VM (VirtualBox 2.2.2 running on a XP host). The package installs fine, but when I try to run it lkl -l -k /usr/share/lkl/keymaps/us_km -o ./kbd.log & it hogs the CPU usage to 50% and never logs a keystroke (in fact the kbd.log file is never created) Any clues? TIA

  • Switching to Linux and Keeping Windows With VirtualBox

    - by Perishable Dave
Hi guys, I'm currently running a Vista machine, but would like to switch over to Linux, Ubuntu in particular. My question is can I switch over to Ubuntu, keep my Windows partition and use VirtualBox to access the pre-existing Windows partition? Or does VirtualBox require me to create a new install for Guest operating systems? If not, are there any other free alternatives to accomplish this? Thanks

  • How to install Ubuntu Server 12.04 in a Virtualbox VM with UEFI boot enabled

    - by Deleted
I have a server which I'd like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on, but I've had some problems and thought it would be nice to get things working in a Virtualbox VM with the same features as the server. I want to enable UEFI-boot in the VM. I "Enable EFI" in the System / Motherboard settings for the VM. I make sure the Ubuntu Server 12.04 ISO is inserted when I boot. And yet I get stuck in the UEFI boot console when I start the VM. How do I install Ubuntu Server 12.04 in a UEFI boot-enabled Virtualbox machine?

  • Running Virtualbox as a Transparent Bridge

    - by Goats
I am setting up Untangle in a Sun VirtualBox VM. I plan on using this machine as a transparent bridge to filter and monitor traffic on my network. I'm not sure how to configure the network adapters for the virtual machine under the Virtualbox's "Devices" menu so that it will function as a transparent bridge. I guess what I'm asking is, should both adapter 1 & 2 be set as Bridged adapters or what? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • VirtualBox without X server

    - by nccc
I want to run a guest operating system under a Linux host with VirtualBox, but I don't want to run from within X. I don't want a headless configuration, I don't want to run VirtualBox in the background, I don't want any remote protocols. I just want the guest OS to take control of my console (keyboard, mouse and monitor) and render to the framebuffer directly, not from within an X window. Is this possible?

  • Getting error message when trying to start a virtual machine

    - by Sunil J
I have been using VMWare on Windows for a long time. But after a long wait, I moved to VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.10. I installed Ubuntu, 32 Bit, installed all available updates and installed Virtual Box. When I try to create a new Windows installation inside VirtualBox, I got the following error messages. 1st error dialogue VirtualBox - Error Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP.<br> The virtual machine '**Windows XP**' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.<p> Details<p> Result Code: <br> NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)<br> Component: <br> Machine<br> Interface: <br> IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}<p> 2nd error dialogue **Virtualbox - Error in suplibOsinit**<br> **Kernal driver not installed (rc--1908)**<br> Please install the virtualbox-dkmbs package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root.<p> Steps I tried I have already tried reinstalling VirtualBox. Google result seem to indicate the the problem happens due to Kernel updates. Is there anyway I can get this working? I need this for malware analysis and if VirtualBox is going to crash on me all the time, then I won't be able to use Ubuntu for work. Output to dpkg -l | grep virtual server rc virtualbox 4.1.2-dfsg-1ubuntu1 x86 virtualization solution - base binaries rc virtualbox-qt 4.1.2-dfsg-1ubuntu1 x86 virtualization solution - Qt based user interface cute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root.<p>

  • Virtualbox HTTP load testing, host CPU overload issues

    - by aschuler
I'm doing HTTP load testing benchmarks (using Apache Benchmark and Siege) on a small Java EE 1.7.0 / Tomcat 7.0.26 application running on a Debian Squeeze 6.0.4 x64 virtualized with Virtualbox 4.1.8. The computer host is Ubuntu 11.10 x64. I've modified those parameters in the Tomcat server.xml : <Connector port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="200000" redirectPort="8443" acceptCount="2000" maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="50" /> The application executed on the server takes around 300ms. This app is running well until a certain amount of concurrent connections like those one : ab -n 500 -c 150 http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/myapp/ ab -n 1000 -c 50 http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/myapp/ siege -b -c 100 -r 20 http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/myapp/ A lot of socket connection timed out happens and this completly overload the host processor (but the CPU load inside the VM is normal). Doing an htop on the host, i can see that the Virtualbox processus is running under 300% CPU and never come down even after the load test is finished. (I've allocated 4 processors to the VM, if I allocate only one processor, CPU load goes under 100%). Restarting Tomcat don't do anything, i'm forced to restart the whole VM. I've tryed to launch those ab/siege commands locally on the VM and everything goes well. I first thought it was related to a linux network limit as explained here: Running some benchmarks using ab, and tomcat starts to really slow down So I've modified those TCP parameters : echo 15 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout echo 30 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_keepalive_intvl echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_recycle echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_reuse It seems to be better, but it continues to overload the host CPU and output socket connections time out at a certain amount of concurrent connections. I'm wondering if this is not related to how Virtualbox handles external concurrent connections.

  • Using Virtualbox Bridge Networking fails connection from Guest OS to Oracle XE running on Host

    - by Licheng
I am trying to make a JDBC connection from a VirtualBox Ubuntu Guest OS to an Oracle XE database running o Host. However, the connection is refused. Here are the details of my environment: VirtualBox: 4.1.4 Host OS: Windows 7 Guest OS: Ubuntu server 11.4 Networking mode: Bridged network Oracle XE database running on Host Issue: WebLogic server runs on the Ubuntu virtualbox. It attempts to connect to an Oracle XE database running on the Host OS (windows 7) with listening port 1521. On the Guest OS (Ubuntu), I am able to ping the Host computer from the Guest OS. However, when I configured a JDBC data source on the WebLogic server on the Guest OS to connect to the Oracle XE, connection took a long time, and eventually I received an "IO Exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection". When I tried "telnet host-ip 1521", no connection was established. With Bridge networking, I can make bi-directional connections between the host and the guest OS (e.g. connection through ssh and ftp). Is there anything I missed in the setup of Bridge networking and the guest/host OS? Note that I was able to make the same connection within a normal networking environment (i.e. not using virtual box). I am not sure whether Bridge networking is a good option for the work described above. Should I use host-only networking mode? If so, any specific configurations I need to perform? I read through the Virtual box document on setting up the host-only network, however, it lacks of details. I followed the procedures described in the manual, and couldn't even connect to the host. Could some experts here enlighten me on this issue? Much appreciated. Licheng

  • Headless VirtualBox VM NAT Network

    - by dirt
I have a remote linux server accessible through SSH only. My goal is to host multiple Virtual Machines on this host server using VirtualBox. The host server has 1 IP address, so NAT will be used to route to the VMs for example 10022 will forward to server1:22 and 20022 will forward to server2:22. I have installed VirtualBox and copied a pre-configured CentOS VM to the host server. I start the VM, but cannot establish a connection to the server for example ssh -p 10022 127.0.0.1 times out. I've tried many things: Method 1: Copied existing .vdi, attached to new VM Method 2: Imported .Ova VM (thought it would help any MAC re-init issues?) NAT network type, tried natnet1 192.168/16 and 10.0/16 VBoxManage modifyvm "hermes.awoms.com" --natnet1 "192.168/16" Port forwarding with and without specifying VM ip in modifyvm --natpf1 command VBoxManage modifyvm "hermes" --natpf1 "guestssh,tcp,,10022,,,22" VBoxManage modifyvm "hermes" --natpf1 "guestssh,tcp,,10022,192.168.0.15,22" I can't see if VM is even booting (VBoxHeadless "hermes" --start & runs with no errors) I can't tell if VM is getting an IP address Is there anything else I can do to get more information from VirtualBox or the VM starting up when the only access I have is SSH?

  • Virtualbox - differencing disk based on different differencing disk

    - by Klinki
I'm trying to create differencing image based on differencing image in VirtualBox 4.2.18. Official documentation says it should be possible: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch05.html#diffimages Basically I want to achieve this drive hierarchy: + immutable image with Debian and all software installed +---- differencing image with specific configuration, autoreset=off, readonly +-------- differencing image with autoreset=on +---- another differencing image for different virtual machine +-------- differencing image with autoreset=on I successfully created differencing image based on differencing image, but I'm not able to connect it to virtual machine :( It always shows error: Failed to open the hard disk .... cannot register hard disk ... because hard disk with UUID ... already exists Here is screenshot of Virtual Media Manager and error dialog Virtual Media Manager Window screenshot Very strange is that the new differencing image (tempdrive.vdi) doesn't have Actual Size 0. I wasn't able to connect it, but still, it has 36KB of data on it... This is very similar to this older question: How to create a chained differencing disk of another differencing disk in Virtual Box? but suggested solution is not working anymore in VirtualBox 4.2.18, so I posted it as a new question. (Limit for posting links and screenshots is quite annoying..)

  • Get Illegal Instruction error when booting Linux in VirtualBox, works fine when booted directly

    - by rkjnsn
I have a computer on which I am dual booting Windows 7 and Gentoo Linux (both 64-bit). I want to be able to load up my Linux installation in a VM while I am booted into Windows. I have installed VirtualBox and followed the instructions for creating a raw disk VMDK. When I start the VM, Linux starts booting, but then fails with the following error when unlocking my root partition: truecrypt[441] trap invalid opcode ip:373615538e0 sp:3dd0e0dfb60 error:0 in libpixman-1.so.0[373614d6000+8d000] Everything works fine when I boot into Linux directly. What could cause an illegal instruction to be hit in libpixman only when booting in VirtualBox? Update: As a troubleshooting step, I recompiled pixman without "-march", and no longer get an illegal instruction error in that library. (The boot fails in the same spot with the same error in a different library, however.) How can I determine the specific opcode that isn't working in VirtualBox so I can disable it in my CFLAGS without having to disable all CPU-specific optimizations? I am still confused as to why there would be any user-mode instruction that would fail to work in a VM. Is this a known limitation? My CPU is an Intel Core i7 3720QM, and I have hardware virtualization support enabled.

  • Virtualizing an Inline network appliance with VirtualBox (or VMWare)

    - by Tzury Bar Yochay
My device, which is a Linux based IP in-liner is transparent to the network peripherals, that is, no IP address assigned to any of its interfaces. For the sake of the conversation, let's use ADSL connection as an example, while the device is inspecting the bi-directional traffic, the network is behaving same as if device was not there, attached to the wire (see Physical setup at the attached diagram). I wonder if I can enclosed that "device" within a Windows machine and have it operated virtually so it still seats inline between the ADSL router and the Windows netwroking interface by using virtual NICs, (or whatever their name is in windows), and inspecting the traffic, same as if it was on a separate physical device, the drawing under "Virtual Setup" in the attached diagram show what I am trying to achieve. Reading a bit on the VirtualBox docs, seems like binding the right side is relatively simple, perhaps I should have one network adapter set as Bridge Networking and VirtualBox will connect it to the physical NIC on the host machine, and network packets are exchanged directly, circumventing the host operating system's network stack (WinXP in my case). However, I have no idea how to achieve the left side of my diagram, which requires adding virtual NICs to windows and configure them correctly in a way to make that pipeline possible. I would appreciate any help. by the way, if that is not possible with VirtualBox but with other virtualization solution (e.g. VMWare), I would accept the other as well.

  • auto-mounting shared folders in VirtualBox

    - by brannerchinese
I am writing to ask what the effect of the auto-mounting process is in VirtualBox, and where the folders can be accessed within a guest Linux system if auto-mount is used. I have VirtualBox 4.0.4 installed on Mac OS 10.6.7, with Guest Additions apparently running correctly. The guest OS is Ubuntu 10.04, and I observe no apparent problems with it. I find that if the shared folders have "auto-mount" unchecked in the VirtualBox settings, they can then be mounted using the prescribed syntax sudo mount -t vboxsf folder_name path_to_mount_point and all works as it is supposed to. But if the auto-mount option is checked, then I find that I can no longer mount the shared folders manually. I get the error mounting failed with the error: Invalid argument and the folders also do not appear to mount anywhere else accessible to me. Using the syntax sudo mount -t vboxsf without specifying a path installs them in /media, with their names prefixed with sf_, but they are not easily accessible there and I have not been able to change their owner using chown, either. Thanks for your patient explanation.

  • VirtualBox doesn't see raw partitions

    - by smbear
What I want to achieve is to set up virtual machine with VirtualBox. Host OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, guest will be (k)Ubuntu 12.04 on a raw partition. The first problem is that when I issue following command: VBoxManage.exe internalcommands listpartitions -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive0 I get following result: Number Type StartCHS EndCHS Size (MiB) Start (Sect) 1 0xee 0 /0 /1 1023/254/63 715404 1 I'm guessing that VirtualBox is unable to see my partitions. If I use diskpart tool, then all partitions are listed correctly (note Polish language version of Windows): DISKPART> select disk 0 Obecnie wybranym dyskiem jest dysk 0. DISKPART> list partition Partycja ### Typ Rozmiar Przesuniecie ------------- ---------------- ------- ------------ Partycja 1 System 200 MB 1024 KB Partycja 2 Zarezerwowany 128 MB 201 MB Partycja 3 Podstawowy 139 GB 329 MB Partycja 5 Nieznany 4883 KB 140 GB Partycja 6 Podstawowy 50 GB 140 GB Partycja 7 Podstawowy 484 GB 190 GB Partycja 4 Odzyskiwanie 24 GB 674 GB Additional note: my PC is using EFI to boot OS. Basing on the results listed above, I believe that: I messed up with my partition table. Something is wrong with VirtualBox. Can anyone help with this issue?

  • VMware convert to Virtualbox?

    - by TechSavvySmurf
I downloaded a Kali Linux ISO VMware image thinking that it would be able to run in Virtualbox as well. However, this only seems to be the case with .vmdk files, and my image is a .vm.tar.gz file. Virtualbox does not recognize it as a valid ISO file, and I am not sure how to convert it. The entire thing is kali-linux-1.0-i386-gnome-vm.tar.gz The goal is to be able to run this in a Virtualbox, is there any way to convert this from VMware to Virtualbox?

  • Install XP Mode with VirtualBox Using the VMLite Plugin

    - by Mysticgeek
Would you like to run XP Mode, but prefer Sun’s VirtualBox for virtualization?  Thanks to the free VMLite plugin, you can quickly and easily run XP Mode in or alongside VirtualBox. Yesterday we showed you one method to install XP Mode in VirtualBox, unfortunately in that situation you lose XP’s activation, and it isn’t possible to reactivate it. Today we show you a tried and true method for running XP mode in VirtualBox and integrating it seamlessly with Windows 7. Note: You need to have Windows 7 Professional or above to use XP Mode in this manner. Install XP Mode Make sure you’re logged in with Administrator rights for the entire process. The first thing you’ll want to do is install XP Mode on your system (link below). You don’t need to install Windows Virtual PC. Go through and install XP Mode using the defaults. Install VirtualBox Next you’ll need to install VirtualBox 3.1.2 or higher if it isn’t installed already. If you have an older version of VirtualBox installed, make sure to update it. During setup you’re notified that your network connection will be reset. Check the box next to Always trust software from “Sun Microsystems, Inc.” then click Install.   Setup only takes a couple of minutes, and does not require a reboot…which is always nice. Install VMLite XP Mode Plugin The next thing we’ll need to install is the VMLite XP Mode Plugin. Again Installation is simple following the install wizard. During the install like with VirtualBox you’ll be asked to install the device software. After it’s installed go to the Start menu and run VMLite Wizard as Administrator. Select the location of the XP Mode Package which by default should be in C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode. Accept the EULA…and notice that it’s meant for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. Next, name the machine, choose the install folder, and type in a password. Select if you want Automatic Updates turned on or not. Wait while the process completes then click Finish.   The VMLite XP Mode will set up to run the first time. That is all there is to this section. You can run XP Mode from within the VMLite Workstation right away. XP Mode is fully activated already, and the Guest Additions are already installed, so there’s nothing else you need to do!  XP Mode is the whole way ready to use. Integration with VirtualBox Since we installed the VMLite Plugin, when you open VirtualBox you’ll see it listed as one of your machines and you can start it up from here.   Here we see VMLite XP Mode running in Sun VirtualBox. Integrate with Windows 7 To integrate it with Windows 7 click on Machine \ Seamless Mode…   Here you can see the XP menu and Taskbar will be placed on top of Windows 7. From here you can access what you need from XP Mode.   Here we see XP running on Virtual Box in Seamless Mode. We have the old XP WordPad sitting next to the new Windows 7 version of WordPad. This works so seamlessly you forget if your working in XP or Windows 7. In this example we have Windows Home Server Console running in Windows 7, while installing MSE from IE 6 in XP Mode. At the top of the screen you will still have access to the VMs controls.   You can click the button to exit Seamless Mode, or simply hit the right “CTRL+L” Conclusion This is a very slick way to run XP Mode in VirtualBox on any machine that doesn’t have Hardware Virtualization. This method also doesn’t lose the XP Mode activation and is actually extremely easy to set up. If you prefer VMware (like we do), Check out how to run XP Mode on machines without Hardware Virtualization capability, and also how to create an XP Mode for Vista and Windows 7 Home Premium.
