• tmux and screen-256 TERM not supported on remote hosts

  I have set up my tmux to use screen-256colors and it works great with vim. However, when I ssh to a remote host from within tmux, screen-256colors isn't recognized, so I'm getting errors like this: E558: Terminal entry not found in terminfo 'screen-256color' not known. Available builtin terminals are: builtin_ansi builtin_xterm builtin_iris-ansi builtin_dumb defaulting to 'ansi' Other than editing each remote .bashrc (similarly to this suggestion), is there any way to set the TERM correctly and automatically on the remote host?

• Put Conky behind the desktop icons

  Maybe I am trying do something impossible, but after hours of Googling I didn't get 100% answer yet. So - it is possible put Conky on Desktop backgroud (behind desktop icons)? The usual config: own_window yes own_window_type normal # (desktop, override) - I have the same result for all this attributes own_window_transparent yes own_window_hints undecorated,below,skip_taskbar,sticky,skip_pager Is giving me Conky with (pseudo)transparent background in front of icons (they are completely hidden behind it, even if in background of Conky is shown background image), while I am trying achieve opposite... My system: SuSE 11.4 KDE 4.4 (Release 3) x86_64

• How to have desktop icons constantly highlighted?

  In Windows 7 when I set the desktop color, it actually sets the color of text in desktop icons. So if I have a black wallpaper, I need to set it to white so icon text will be visible. If I want to have a multi-colored wallpaper then this causes a problem, as icon text won't be readable over areas where color is the same as the set desktop color. Is there a way to have icons constantly highlighted to avoid this?

• How to set the time HylaFax waits for the remote device to pick up

  I'm using HylaFax on one of my server to send facsimile to different devices which works pretty well except for one device. I'm not sure, but the problem might be, that the remote device takes to long to pick up and response to the call. I tested it by calling the fax number with my phone and it took 30 seconds till the remote side picked up. So is there a way to tell HylaFax how long it should wait for the remote device to answer?

I have a lot of respect for the People who visit this SITE and help others ! Just To clarify : Just to go by SF rules - I am not seeking someone to Design this solution, I am simply seeking real world examples, experiences, technical expert opinions / suggestions, any tips or tricks they may have or any problems they may have faced while doing something similar above with these products. I am also not asking for Capacity Planning for Storage, We have done some research and I am seeking Expert Assurance / Suggestions. We (our company) are planning to deploy Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 Desktop Edition to our 3000 - 4000 workstations (Windows7 32 and 64) with a few 100s with Windows XP 32/64 Bit. I have read the implementation guide for SEP and have read tech-notes for Desktop Recovery 2011. Our team have planned to deploy this as follows : 1 x dedicated SQL 2008R2 for Symantec Endpoint Protection (Instead of using the Embedded Database) 1 x Dedicated SQL 2008R2 for Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 (Instead of using the Embedded Database) 1 x Dedicated W2K8 R2 Box for the SEPM (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager - Mgmt. APP) 1 x Dedicated W2K8 R2 Box for the Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 Management Application Agent Deployment : As per Symantec Documentation for both of the above, an agent can be pushed via the Mgmt. Application (provided no firewalls are blocking ports required etc. - we have Windows firewall disabled already). Server Hardware : Per SQL Server : 16GB RAM + SAS DISKS + Dual XEON, RAID-10 for the SQL DB or I can always mount a LUN from our existing Hitachi or EMC SAN. SEPM Server : 16GB RAM + SAS DISKS + DUAL XEON System Recovery MGMT SERVER : 16GB RAM + SAS DISKS + DUAL XEON Above is the initial plan we have for 3000 - 4000 client workstation (Windows) Now my Questions :-) a) If we had these users distributed amongst two sites with AD DC / GC in each site, How would I restrict SEPM and Desktop Mgmt. solution to only check for users in their respective site ? b) At present all users are under one building but we are going to move some dept. to a new location (with dedicated connectivity), How would we control which SEPM / MGMT Server is responsible for which site ? c) We have netbackup in our environment backing up other servers, I am planning to protect these 4 (2 x SQL, 1 x SEPM, 1 x System Recovery Mgmt. Server) via netbackup or I can use System recovery 2011 server edition on all 4 of these boxes as well. (License is not an issue as we have the complete symantec portfolio included in our license). d) Now - Saving Desktop backups - What strategies have you implemented ? Any best practice recommendation for a large user base ? I was thinking to either mount a LUN from our Hitachi SAN on the Symantec Recovery Server itself or backup to the users hard drive locally and then copy it over to a network location ? Suggestions welcome :-) If you have anything to add / correct - that will be really helpful before diving into the actual implementation phase. Whenever user is working in publisher 20003, and tries to save a publisher 2003 document to the desktop, the save as dialog hangs and takes 2-3 minutes to display the desktop save location. I've tested excel 2003, it has no problems immediately displaying the desktop save as location and saving the file.

• Fixing restore active desktop on windows xp

  I've already tried this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-desktop/windows-xp-will-not-restore-my-active-desktop/f664bfe4-0acd-4b11-8918-eb779bb2cc07 had no luck. All I know is that the computer crashed from a power outage. I've tried clicking the restore button and rebooting. Nothing. What else is there to try? Would like to have the desktop back. It powers on fine. I can login and use windows just fine. Just you get that annoying restore active desktop screen.

  Consider the following situation. A remote repository has two branches master and b1. In addition it has two clones repo1 and repo2 and both have b1 checked out. At some point, in repo1 the name of b1 was changed. As far as I can tell, the following is the right procedure to change the name of b1: $ git branch b1 b2 # changes the name of b1 to b2 $ git push remote :b1 # delete b1 remotely $ git push --set-upstream origin b2 # create b2 remotely and direct the local branch to track the remote 1 Now, afterwards, in repo2 I face a problem. git pull doesn't pull the changes from the branch (which is now called remotely b2). The error returned is: Your configuration specifies to merge with the ref 'b1' from the remote, but no such ref was fetched. What is the right way to do this? Both the renaming part and the updating in other clones?

• Google Drive desktop client not updating existing files from other users

  I've looked around and there doesn't really seem to be any troubleshooting information for the Google Drive desktop client. It all assumes you are using Google Docs on the web. Anyway, my team is trying to use Google Drive like Dropbox, where multiple people are editing files shared amongst them through the desktop, such as images. Dropbox is really good at noticing when a checksum for a file is changed, and syncing it. Google Drive's desktop client seems not to do this at all. Google Drive desktop client seems to only sync newly created files and not giving any notification at all that there is a modified version, it will never sync it, even though going online and opening that file will show the modified version. Is there any way to fix this? and the answer has nothing to do with proxy or firewall configurations. Team is using computers running OSX and Windows.

• Remote desktop fails with user denied until client reboot

  Sometimes (but often enough to anoy) Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to a server (2008 R2 but maybe also 2003) and claims that "The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login." The user is always authorized for remote login and the connection works from other clients. (Although this is the very same message that appears when a user really isn't autorized for remote login.) The problem always goes away after a client restart. The client is always Windows 7 but I have no (other) reason to assume that it only affects Windows 7 clients. Any idea what causes this?

• Mac OS X desktop background gets reset to "Andromeda Galaxy.jpg" when users log out

  I'm running Mac OS 10.6 server, and have a set of 10.6 and 10.7 workstations connected to it for authentication and MCX. Users have network profiles (home folder stored on server, via AFP). When users are logged in, they can change their desktop background. So far so good. However, the next time they log in, their desktop background has been reset to "Andromeda Galaxy.jpg". Though MCX is enabled and used to control other settings, MCX is disabled for the Desktop. What is keeping the users' desktop background from being preserved? How can I fix it?

• OOF (Out of Office) is not working for remote users (Outlook Anywhere)

  I'm not sure how long this issue has been happening, but recently a few of the remote sales users were going to a sales meeting and wanted to set their Out of Office... however in Outlook 2010, they get this error message: "Your automatic reply settings cannot be displayed because the server is currently unavailable" When I run the Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer, Autodiscover completes fine, but the next step fails: Exception details: Message: The request failed. The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden. Type: Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Data.ServiceRequestException Stack trace: at Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Data.ServiceRequestBase.GetEwsHttpWebResponse(IEwsHttpWebRequest request) at Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Data.MultiResponseServiceRequest`1.Execute() at Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Data.ExchangeService.BindToFolder[TFolder](FolderId folderId, PropertySet propertySet) at Microsoft.Exchange.Tools.ExRca.Tests.EnsureEmptyFolderTest.PerformTestReally() Exception details: Message: The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden. • Desktop Properties Background selection problems

  From the Desktop of my XP Home Edn SP3 system, under the Right-Click Menu Properties, the [Desktop] tab, of the 'Display Properties' window shows a selection list for the Desktop's Background image. For me this list has become frozen and its slider (at right) will not move. The [Browse] button and the 'Position' dropdown list (whether the selected image is centred, stretched, etc) are also greyed out. I can still use both the Color dropdown list at the right of the Background list and the [Customize Desktop] button below it, and make any changes as desired. What's gone wrong. I'm guessing maybe a registery setting or I've deleted a file somewhere, but haven't found the cause as yet. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

• Healthcare and Distributed Data Don't Mix

  How many times have you heard the story?  Hard disk goes missing, USB thumb drive goes missing, laptop goes missing...Not a week goes by that we don't hear about our data going missing...  Healthcare data is a big one, but we hear about credit card data, pricing info, corporate intellectual property...  When I have spoken at Security and IT conferences part of my message is "Why do you give your users data to lose in the first place?"  I don't suggest they can't have access to it...in fact I work for the company that provides the premiere data security and desktop solutions that DO provide access.  Access isn't the issue.  'Keeping the data' is the issue.We are all human - we all make mistakes... I fault no one for having their car stolen or that they dropped a USB thumb drive. (well, except the thieves - I can certainly find some fault there)  Where I find fault is in policy (or lack thereof sometimes) that allows users to carry around private, and important, data with them.  Mr. Director of IT - It is your fault, not theirs.  Ms. CSO - Look in the mirror.It isn't like one can't find a network to access the data from.  You are on a network right now.  How many Wireless ones (wifi, mifi, cellular...) are there around you, right now?  Allowing employees to remove data from the confines of (wait for it... ) THE DATA CENTER is just plain indefensible when it isn't required.  The argument that the laptop had a password and the hard disk was encrypted is ridiculous.  An encrypted drive tells thieves that before they sell the stolen unit for $75, they should crack the encryption and ascertain what the REAL value of the laptop is... credit card info, Identity info, pricing lists, banking transactions... a veritable treasure trove of info people give away on an 'encrypted disk'.What started this latest rant on lack of data control was an article in Government Health IT that was forwarded to me by Denny Olson, an Oracle Principal Sales Consultant in Minnesota.  The full article is here, but the point was that a couple laptops went missing in a couple different cases, and.. well... no one knows where the data is, and yes - they were loaded with patient info.  What were you thinking?Obviously you can't steal data form a Sun Ray appliance... since it has no data, nor any storage to keep the data on, and Secure Global Desktop allows access from Macs, Linux and Windows client devices...  but in all cases, there is no keeping the data unless you explicitly allow for it in your policy.   Since you can get at the data securely from any network, why would you want to take personal responsibility for it?  Both Sun Rays and Secure Global Desktop are widely used in Healthcare... but clearly not widely enough.We need to do a better job of getting the message out -  Healthcare (or insert your business type here) and distributed data don't mix. Then add Hot Desking and 'follow me printing' and you have something that Clinicians (and CSOs) love.Thanks for putting up my blood pressure, Denny.

• How to Get Windows 7 Theme Wallpapers Without Installing Them

  Are you using an older version of Windows but like the Windows 7 theme wallpapers? What if you have Windows 7 but you don’t want to install the themes just to get the wallpapers? Here is how to get them without having to install themes. This guest article was written by Ryan Dozier from the Doztech tech blog. Getting the Wallpaper on XP, Vista, or Windows 7 First download and install 7-zip on your machine (link below). After you’ve installed 7-zip, download a Windows 7 theme (link below) and right-click on the theme, select 7-Zip, and Extract to “Theme Name”… A new folder will appear with the theme name on it. When you open it, there will be a folder called DesktopBackground or something similar.   Open the folder to get the wallpapers to view the wallpapers for the theme. You can delete the extra files and just keep the wallpapers!   Getting the Wallpaper on Ubuntu Extracting the wallpaper on Ubuntu can be a little tricky. Just follow these steps and you will be able to do it. First go to the Ubuntu Software Center under the Applications menu. Search for 7zip and click on the arrow to go to the applications menu. Find the Install button and click it. It will take a couple of minutes for 7zip to install. After 7zip installs, close the Ubuntu Software Center and download a Windows 7 theme. Store it somewhere you can access it quickly. Right-click on the theme and select Rename and get rid of the themepack extension and replace it with zip. The file should be “Theme Name.zip” after you rename it. Right-click on the theme and click Extract Here. After  the extracting you will have a new folder with the theme name. Open it and go into the DesktopBackground folder to get the wallpapers. You can delete the extra files and just keep the wallpapers. If you want to get the new Windows 7 Themes Wallpapers, but don’t want to search and install them separately, this is a nice workaround. • Change The Windows 7 Start Orb the Easy Way

  Want to make your Windows 7 PC even more unique and personalized?  Then check out this easy guide on how to change your start orb in Windows 7. Getting Started First, download the free Windows 7 Start Button Changer (link below), and extract the contents of the folder.  It contains the app along with a selection of alternate start button orbs you can try out.   Before changing the start button, we advise creating a system restore point in case anything goes wrong.  Enter System Restore in your Start menu search, and select “Create a restore point”. Please note:  We tested this on both the 32 bit and 64 bit editions of Windows 7, and didn’t encounter any problems or stability issues.  That said, it is always prudent to make a restore point just in case a problem did happen. Click the Create button… Then enter a name for the restore point, and click Create. Changing the Start Orb. Once this is finished, run the Windows 7 Start Button Changer as administrator by right-clicking on it and selecting “Run as administrator”.  Accept the UAC prompt that will appear. If you don’t run it as an administrator, you may see the following warning.  Click Quit, and then run again as administrator. You should now see the Windows 7 Start Button Changer.  On the left it shows what your current (default) start orb looks like inactive, when hovered over, and when selected.  Click the orb on the right to select a new start button. Here we browsed to the sample orbs folder, and selected one of them.  Let’s give Windows the Media Center orb for a start orb.  Click the orb you want, and then select open. When you click Open, your screen will momentarily freeze and your taskbar will disappear.  When it reappears, your computer will have gone from having the old, default Start orb style… …to your new, exciting Start orb!  Here it is default, and glowing when hovered over. Now, the Windows 7 Start Orb Changer will change, and show your new Start orb on the left side.  If you would like to revert to the default orb, simply click the folder icon to restore it.  Or, if you would like to change the orb again, restore the original first and then select a new one. The orbs don’t have to be round; here’s a fancy Windows 7 logo as the start button. The start orb change will work in the Aero and Aero basic (which Windows 7 Start uses) themes, but will not show up in the classic, Windows 2000 style themes.  Here’s how the new start button looks with the Aero Classic theme: There are tons of orbs available, including this cute smiley, so choose one that you like to make your computer uniquely yours. • Using gnome-boxes with Remote Desktop Connection

  in the past I used to connect to my windows server from ubuntu with remmina (through rdp protocol). I've recently installed ubuntu gnome remix (12.10.1) and gnome-boxes and I'm wondering if I can do the same with gnome-boxes. I've tried creating a new item in gnome-boxes and entering as url "rdp://x.x.x.x" as I used to do in remmina bit it says that the rdp protocol is not supported. Unfortunatelly I cannot find any manual or documentation listing the supported protocol or giving instruction on how to connect to a remote desktop. Can someone help me please?

It is a great demo that exposes from the very basics of each visual component as well as advanced functionality such as dependent list of values, master-details integration, event handling, integration with ADF Faces and web interfaces and parameter passing between ADF applications to excel.
