• Why do "ls" in UNIX and "dir" in DOS have different names?

  Why do they have different names for the same command, listing a directory? Surely, they could have talked to each other and agreed on one common name, such as for example cd which is the same for both unix and dos. This decision to have different names has created many headaches for developers and users and also increased incompatibility between the two systems. Did they do it on purpose? Then how come "cd" is the same?

• Is there a historical computer peripherals or accessories museum or even just a current list?

  Thinking about all the unique and different peripherals I've owned over the years, from ISA capture cards, to parallel port controlled shutter glasses for 3d games. I've seen many many accessory or computer peripherals come and go. The nostalgia of these things is a lot of fun. I tried to find some sort of historical time-line or list but what mostly turned up is computers themselves. I'm more interested in the mice, scanners, the weird adapters that shouldn't exist, short run very rare products, strange devices from computer shows in the 80's and 90's... Hardware you might find in a geeks basement that would be completely useless now, but was the coolest thing around when it was new. An example would be a drawing tablet I had for my TI-99 computer, or the audio tape player accessory for a C64 which let you save files to audio tapes, An ISA card that did the same for PC's hooked up to a VCR. Remember that IBM-PC Jr upgrade kit, that added a floppy drive, more memory and the AT switch in the back? I'd love to find either a wiki, or a list that has already been assembled which contain many of these weird (or common) accessories. I've had so many over the years I suppose I could start a wiki here if such a list doesn't already exist.

• What does the 'X' in .aspx, docx, xlsx, etc... represent?

  It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

• Software for browsing/searching SQL Server transaction logs

  I'd like to know whether there is any piece of software that will allow the browsing/searching of SQL Server transaction logs (any version). We've previously used Lumigent Log Explorer against SQL Server 2000 which fulfilled our need, but the product no longer exists and Lumigent's closest replacement doesn't appear to support SQL 2008 (according to the data sheet). I've discovered something called ApexSQL Audit which may fit the bill, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of it, how it compares with Log Explorer, and whether there are any good alternatives out there.   Is there a way to auto-rename an existing file on the receiver? For example: if filename already exists, it auto-rename filename to something like filename_001, filename_002 and so on.... So far all I have is this: $ rsync -rh --progress --stats --exclude '.thumb' \ --update --perms /origin /destination By the way, I know rsync has --ignore-existing to "skip updating files that exist on receiver", but I guess what I need would be something like --rename-existing.

• File size limit exceeded in bash

  I have tried this shell script on a SUSE 10 server, kernel 2.6.16.60, ext3 filesystem the script has problem like this: cat file | awk '{print $1" "$2" "$3}' | sort -n > result the file's size is about 3.2G, and I get such error message: File size limit exceeded in this shell, ulimit -f is unlimited after I change script into this cat file | awk '{print $1" "$2" "$3}' >tmp sort -n tmp > result the problem is gone. I don't know why, can anyone help me with an explanation?

• How do I find out when and by whom a particular user was deleted in linux?

  I've recently ran into a very odd occurrence on one system I'm using. For no apparent reason, my user account was deleted, although the home directory is still there. I have root access, so I can restore the account, but first, I want to know how this happened, and exactly when. Inspecting the root's .bash_history file and the "last" command gave nothing, and I'm (well, was) the only sudoer on the system. How would I know when this deletion happened? The distro is CentOS release 5.4 (Final), if that helps.

• Log Problem and bash script

  Hello Guys, I have 11 Debian servers running on rackspace cloud hosting. All running VHCS2 for hosting management. 1 server is used for application and 10 are used for only smtp. My question is regarding smtp servers. Each server hosted 1 domain. My problem is when my client use smtp there's a log created in this directory /var/log/ but within 24 hours drives are full and server refuse all smtp connections. Then I deleted the logs and ran following command to check the disk space. df -h but it shows hdd still full and server is still refusing the smtp connections. Then I ran following command to see the truth du --max-depth=1 -h It shows the truth. The real disk space used. Then I rebooted the server and now server working fine. But after few hours same situation happened. Then I created the following script. #!/bin/sh rm -fr /var/log/* rm -fr /var/log/apache2/*.log rm -fr /var/log/apache2/*.log.* rm -fr /var/log/apache2/users/* rm -fr /var/log/apache2/backup/* reboot It worked for days but after that logs are again filling the hdd. Now I want the following solutions. If anybody can help me. When I delete files from server hdd will free up without rebooting Log should be in specific range. Like a specific size of file where old data overwrite with new data

  In iTerm2 (Build 1.0.0.20120203), I typically open several tabs, each of which has split panes , and is about one particular theme of work, for example revision control, coding, managing files, mysql terminal work. I typically need to switch between 5 or more tabs in my work flow. It is sometimes hard to remember or tell which is which by looking at the content of the screen. I'd like to name the tabs somehow, so I can quickly tell which is which by quickly glancing. Is this possible?

• MySql in Bash: Show only errors

  Let me first start off by saying I am not an experienced linux user. I am trying to debug a mysql script in linux, however, my issue is that most of the queries are successful so I can not see the error messages because they scroll off the screen. I am executing the queries from a large file using the \. command. I was wondering if there was a way to show ONLY the error messages when I exececute the sql file. Right now it is showing both error messages and Query OK,.... I don't really care about the queries that are ok, just the errors. Thanks!

In order to tidy this table up, I need to get this information as a date range rather than a row per day as it currently is. I can obviously do this with Min and Max aggregates easily but the ranges overlap and other business code expect non-overlapping ranges. I also tried to achieve this with self joins and row_number(), but without much success... However, if you forget to assign the work item during your check-in, things really get cumbersome as Visual Studio does not provide an easy way of assigning. For example, you usually have to open the work item and then link the changeset which involves approx. 7-8 mouse clicks. Now, you will really feel the difficulty if you have to assign work item to multiple changesets, you have to repeat the same steps again. Hence, I decided to develop a small Visual Studio extension to perform this action of linking work item to changeset bit easier. How to use the extension? First, download and install the extension from VS Gallery (Supports VS 2013 Professional and above). Once you install, you will see a new "Link To Work Item" menu item when you right click on a changeset in history window. Clicking Link To Work Item menu, will open a new dialog with which you can search for a work item. As you can see in below screenshot, this dialog displays the search result and also the type of the work item. You can also open work item from this dialog by right clicking on the work item and clicking 'Open'. Finally, clicking Save button, will actually link the work item to changeset. One feature which I think helpful, is you can select multiple changesets from history window and assign the work item to all those changesets.  To summarize the features Directly assign work items to changesets from history window Assign work item to multiple changesets Know the type of the work item before assigning. Open the work item from search results It also supports all default Visual Studio themes. Below is a small demo showcasing the working of this extension.   Hello everyone: I am trying to comprehend Perl following the way describe in the book "Minimal Perl". I've uploaded all source txt files onto my own server : results folder I got the output from using several bash commands in a "chain" like this: cat run*.txt | grep '^Bank[[:space:]]Balance'| cut -d ':' -f2 | grep -E '\$[0-9]+' I know this is far from the most concise and efficient, but at least it works... As our uni subject now moves onto the Perl part, I'd like to know if there is a way to get the same results in one line? I am trying something like the following code but stuck in the middle: Chenxi Mao@chenxi-a6b123bb /cygdrive/c/eMarket/output $ perl -wlne 'print; if $n=~/^Bank Balance/' syntax error at -e line 1, near "if $n" Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.

• PendingIntent from notification and application history conflicts

  I'm creating a notification with something similar to the following: Intent ni = new Intent(this, SomeActivity.class); ni.putExtra("somestring", "somedata"); PendingIntent contentIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, ni, PendingIntent.FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT|PendingIntent.FLAG_ONE_SHOT); Context context = getApplicationContext(); notification.setLatestEventInfo(context, res.getString(R.string.app_name), text, contentIntent); The key here is the extra data on the Intent for the notification. Once I click on the notification and it brings up SomeActivity, it brings up the activity and the extra data is available. However, if I exit the app, hold the home button until the recent activities list comes up, and choose to open the app again, the extra data is still passed. Is there a way I can make this data get passed only if the app is opened via the Notification, and not from the recent activities list?

• Msysgit bash is horrendously slow in Windows 7

  I love git and use it on OSX pretty much constantly at home. At work, we use svn on Windows, but want to migrate to git as soon as the tools have fully matured (not just TortoiseGit, but also something akin the really nice Visual Studio integration provided by VisualSVN). But I digress... I recently installed msysgit on my Windows 7 machine, and when using the included version of bash, it is horrendously slow. And not just the git operations; clear takes about five seconds. AAAAH! Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

I use TortoiseSVN 1.6.3 on WXP and there is no svnadmin.exe command in all my C folder, where am I supposed to download these applications? Thanks!

  I am aware of this command: cvs log -N -w<userid> -d"1 day ago" Unfortunately this generates a formatted report with lots of newlines in it, such that the file-path, the file-version, and the comment-text are all on separate lines. Therefore it is difficult to scan it for all occurrences of comment text, (eg, grep), and correlate the matches to file/version. (Note that the log output would be perfectly acceptable, if only cvs could perform the filtering natively.) EDIT: Sample output.
