• Running Java plugin 1.5 on Firefox + Snow Leopard

  I have a Java applet that needs to be able to run on Java 1.5. I have successfully installed Java 1.5 on Snow Leopard and I am able to use it to run applets in Safari by changing the order of the versions in Java Preferences. However, Firefox (3.5.9) doesn't seem to be able to pick up the changes and keeps reverting to using the Java 1.6 plugin. How do I force Firefox to use the Java 1.5 plugin? I tried re-linking the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK folder to point to my 1.5 directory, but that seems to change the system-level Java runtime, not the Firefox plugin (it opened up the console differently, but inside the console it reported Java plugin 1.6.0).

• Can't register 32bit dll under 64bit windows

  Hi guys. I try to create a COM object from my JS script like this: function main() { var MyApplication = new ActiveXObject("Base.Application"); } main(); I am getting error: "Automation server can't create object". This error occurs on Windows 2003 64 bit. The dll is 32 bit and it works fine on 32 bit systems. I've tried both versions of Regsvr32.exe on the 64 bit system and both versions told me that dll registered succesfully. Unfortunatelly the error message does not tell me why it can not create object. The reason is unknown, it might be that it can't create object because it is still not registered or it might be something totally different... I've also add full permisions to this dll. I don't know what else I can do, do you have any ideas?

• .NET framework 4 total application deployment size

  After watching in horror as the .NET framework 3.5 SP1 bloated to whopping 231 MB I was amazed to see that .NET Framework 4 Full (x86) is only 35 MB and client profile just 29 MB. My question is if .NET Framework 4 is in any way dependent on previous versions of the framework being installed on the client machine or if my users will have to download only 29 (or 35) MB if I develop a Winforms or WPF desktop application in VS 2010 targeting .NET Framework version 4.0? Edit: Wikipedia concurs with the answers: Some developers have expressed concerns about the large size of .NET framework runtime installers for end-users. The size is around 54 MB for .NET 3.0, 197 MB for .NET 3.5, and 250 MB for .NET 3.5 SP1 (while using web installer the typical download for Windows XP is around 50 MB, for Windows Vista - 20 MB). The size issue is partially solved with .NET 4 installer (x86 + x64) being 54 MB and not embedding full runtime installation packages for previous versions.

• Get a list of Android phone contacts only on Eclair and above?

  I want to show the user a flattened pick list of all their contacts phone numbers and it must work from versions 1.6 up. I have read the related questions on SO and the Android documentation for Eclair (http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/contacts.html#legacy). The problem is, even splitting my code into a factory class and specific implementations does not work for me because using Contacts.CONTENT_URI only shows contacts not individual numbers. What I need is this for version 1.6 Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, Phones.CONTENT_URI); startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_PICK_CONTACT); And the equivalent for 2.0 and above. Even if I get their example to work, by building against the 2.1 API am I not stopping my app being visible on the Market to users with earlier versions of the OS? I can't launch it against a 1.6 emulator, for example.

  I'm attempting to use CouchDB for a system that requires full auditing of all data operations. Because of its built in revision-tracking, couch seemed like an ideal choice. But then I read in the O'Reilly textbook that "CouchDB does not guarantee that older versions are kept around." I can't seem to find much more documentation on this point, or how couch deals with its revision-tracking internally. Is there any way to configure couch either on a per-database, or per-document level to keep all versions around forever? If so, how?

  After installing .Net 4 and getting some questions that were already answered here I also realized how the Framework dlls are repeated in several places for the different Framework versions (this is not new, it happens with previous versions, but hadn't paid attention to it until now) 1 - GAC: %systemroot%\assembly 2- Framework installation directory: %systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v... 3- and if you have the Windows SDK installed, also in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\ I think the last ones are the so called "Reference Assemblies" and have extra metadata to aid Visual Studio, but what about location number 2? Why are assemblies repeated there?

  I'm trying (as a self-learning exercise) to create a Clojure macro that will generate code to apply a function to a sequence of integers and sum the result, e.g. f(0) + f(1) + f(2) + f(3) This is my attempt: (defmacro testsum [func n] `(fn [x#] (+ ~@( map (fn [i] `(~func x#)) (range n))))) However something seems to go wrong with the x# gensym and I end up with two different versions of x and hence the function doesn't work: (macroexpand '(testsum inc 3)) gives: (fn* ([x__809__auto__] (clojure.core/+ (inc x__808__auto__) (inc x__808__auto__) (inc x__808__auto__)))) This is pretty much exactly what I want apart from the different 809 and 808 versions of x..... What am I doing wrong? I thought that the auto gensym was meant to create a single unique symbol for exactly this kind of purpose? Is there a better way of doing this?

• Getting error in integrating Contacts APIs in Android 1.6 and 2.0

  Hi All, I have seen the BusinessCard example provide in Android examples. I am using ContactAccessor abstract class to seperate out the SDK versions. My code is running fine for 2.0 onwards, but when I am trying to build the code in Adnroid 1.6 I am getting the following errors: Build.VERSION_CODES.ECLAIR is not resolved. Getting errors in the whole class in which I have used Contacts APIs from 2.0 (say in class ContactAccessorSdk5.java). How to resolve these issues? I want to run my App on both the versions.   I'd like to know how best to program three different editions of my C# ASP.NET 3.5 application in VS2008 Professional (which includes a web deployment project). I have a Light, Pro and Ultimate edition (or version) of my application. At the moment I've put all in one solution with three build versions in configuration manager and I use preprocessor directives all over the code (there are around 20 such constructs in some ten thousand lines of code, so it's overseeable): #if light //light code #endif #if pro //pro code #endif //etc... I've read in stackoverflow for hours and thought to encounter how e.g. Microsoft does this with its different Windows editions, but did not find what I expected. Somewhere there is a heavy discussion about if preprocessor directives are evil. What I like with those #if-directives is: the side-by-side code of differences, so I will understand the code for the different editions after six months and the special benefit to NOT give out compiled code of other versions to the customer. OK, long explication, repeated question: What's the best way to go?

  We're seeing strange behavior when running two versions of a query on SQL Server 2005: version A: SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = 1234 ORDER BY name ASC version B: DECLARE @Id AS INT; SET @Id = 1234; SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @Id ORDER BY name ASC Both queries return 1000 rows; version A takes on average 15s; version B on average takes 4s. Could anyone help us understand the difference in execution times of these two versions of SQL?   Given I have data like the following, how can I select and group by portions of a string? Version Users 1.1.1 1 1.1.23 3 1.1.45 1 2.1.24 3 2.1.12 1 2.1.45 3 3.1.10 1 3.1.23 3 What I want is to sum up the users using version 1.1.x and 2.2.x and 3.3.x etc, but I'm not sure how I can group on a partial string in a select statement. edit What the data should return like is this: Version Users 1.1.XX 5 2.1.XX 7 3.1.XX 4 There is an infinite variable number of versions, some are in this format (major, minor, build) some are just major, minor and some are just major, the only time I want to "roll up" the versions is when there is a build.

  Developing in .NET 3.5. Recently my well-worn link to the .NET Framework 3.5 Class Library documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229335.aspx) started taking me to the .NET 4.0 docs. This is a bit of a nuisance, because I'm not interested in .NET 4.0 (yet)--the project I'm working on is in 3.5. Previous versions of the .NET Class Library docs provided links to older versions; these don't appear to be present any more in 4.0 docs. And I can't seem to locate the 3.5 docs anywhere on MSDN. Does anyone know where these are located. Or (better) where I can download a static copy of the Class Library docs (something conveniently available with Java API javadocs) that Microsoft can't hide?   Hey All, I have a group of png files in my bundle; but I also want smaller versions of them to be used at my app as well. Right now I am just resizing them all manually and putting them in the bundle as well: so i might have Graphic_1.png and Graphic_1-thumbnail.png. Instead, is there anyway to do something like: at build time, take all my png assets and create 1/4 scale versions of them, and save them into the bundle as well, with the -thumbnail in the filename as above? • C# VS 2008 Build Configurations - using different classes for different builds

  I'm writing an application which has two classes that provide basically the same functionality but for different situations. I'd like to have three versions of the software - one where the user can change an ini file to configure the program to use one of the two classes, and then one version that only uses one of the two classes. Right now I have it working via an ini file, but I'd like to be able to build versions that don't include the code for the unneeded class at all. What is the best way to go about this? My current line of thinking is that since both classes derive from a common interface I'll just add a compile time conditional that looks at the active build configuration and decides whether to compile that class.   I have an existing IDA Pro project for a C166 processor embedded application. This project already has many functions, variables, etc defined. There are different versions of the embedded application I am looking at. The different versions of the application are 99% the same, but with slight variations in code and data that cause functions and variables to be at different memory offsets. I want to create a new IDA project for a different version of the application. I would like to somehow import all of my function and variable definitions from my existing IDA project. I would like IDA to recognize the signatures of the existing function definitions and define them at there new location in the new project. How can I do this? Are there certain plugins for IDA I can chain together?

  I am building a web application that is dependent upon several third-party libraries. What is a good strategy for making sure that you're always using the most fully patched versions? A simple method would be to keep the versions written down and visit the websites at regular intervals, but I am looking for some way to get the information 'pushed' to me if possible. I figured that there might be others out there who have needed to do the same thing and have worked out a good solution. Right now, I read the entire properties file in help of the property task. Then I iterate over a given list in a for loop like this: <for list="ProjectNameA,ProjectNameB" param="project"> <sequential> <echo message="@{project} has version ${@{project}}" /> </sequential> </for> How can I avoid the duplication of the project names in the for loop. So basically iterate over each line and extract the name and the version of a project. Thanks.

Now Snow Leopard is a little more up-to-date and by default ships with $ ls /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/ 2.3 2.5 2.6 @Current What could be considered best practice? Using the python shipped with Mac OS X or a custom compiled version in, say $HOME. Are there any advantages/disadvantages using the one option over the other? My setup was fairly simple so far and looked like this: Custom compiled Python in $HOME and a $PATH that would look into $HOME/bin first, and subsequently would use my private Python version. Also $PYTHONPATH pointed to this local installation. This way, I did not need to sudo–install packages - virtualenv took care of the rest.

• Single page app with high number of images working extremely slow on iOS8 safari/Webview

  We are working on a WebView (not WKWebView, yet) app, are are observing that the app runs extremely slow on iOS 8. The same app runs smooth on lower versions of OS like iOS7 and iOS6. So we tried it in safari on iOS8 and the performance is similar to iOS6 and 7. The app is filled with images and many are high resolution. While trying to trace the issue (trial and error!) we reduced the sizes and resolutions of the images and the performance improved, but it is still not at par with versions 6 and 7. We are unable to find any such issues reported elsewhere and are stuck. It would be great if we could get some pointers on this one.

  Hello, I would like to start developing mobile-friendly versions of websites for my clients, however, I am baffled with options and google search wasn't very helpful - there is so many options and opinions, I've been reading for few days now and still have no idea how to start. What's your opinion/experience about/with it? My main points: mobile devices supported (in order of relevance): iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, Blackberry, Droid powered mobiles, other phone friendly numbers, phone friendly emails contact/register form working on each (or the most possible) devices listed jQTouch seems superb (simple, quick, working), I'm not sure about it on blackberry/droid and I don't want to create 6 web versions for each mobile device - Makes even less sense if you consider, that I'm starting with small web (6-10 pages, 1 contact form, 3 register forms) to play with. • What's the fastest way to compare two objects in PHP?

  Let's say I have an object - a User object in this case - and I'd like to be able to track changes to with a separate class. The User object should not have to change it's behavior in any way for this to happen. Therefore, my separate class creates a "clean" copy of it, stores it somewhere locally, and then later can compare the User object to the original version to see if anything changed during its lifespan. Is there a function, a pattern, or anything that can quickly compare the two versions of the User object? Option 1 Maybe I could serialize each version, and directly compare, or hash them and compare? Option 2 Maybe I should simply create a ReflectionClass, run through each of the properties of the class and see if the two versions have the same property values? Option 3 Maybe there is a simple native function like objects_are_equal($object1,$object2);? What's the fastest way to do this?
