• How to make a disk image and restore from it later?

  I'm a new Linux user. I've reinstalled my Wubi from scratch at least ten times the last few weeks because while getting the system up and running (drivers, resolution, etc.) I've broken something (X, grub, unknowns) and I can't get it back to work. Especially for a newbie like me, it's easier (and much faster) to just reinstall the whole shebang than try to troubleshoot several layers of failed "fixing" attempts. Coming from Windows, I expect that there is some "disk image" utility that I can run to make a snapshot of my Linux install (and of the boot partition!!) before I meddle with stuff. Then, after I've foobar'ed my machine, I would somehow restore my machine back to that working snapshot. What's the Linux equivalent of Windows disk imagers like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost? • Nautilus will not launch after update to 12.10

  I updated to Ubuntu 12.10 today from 12.04 using the graphical update tool. Everything seemed to be fine until I went to open Nautilus, and it would not open. Bizarrely, I am able to open a file that I happen to have on my desktop, but when I click on the launcher, it never opens. When I enter 'nautilus' in the terminal, I get this: (nautilus:8557): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_display_get_xdisplay: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) nautilus I am not a total novice with ubuntu or linux, but all I can tell is that there is some problem with X. Can someone please point me in the right direction as far as fixing this? I really don't want to have to do a fresh install. Thank you very much.

• Learning a new language using broken unit tests

  I was listening to a dot net rocks the other day where they mentioned, almost in passing, a really intriguing tool for learning new languages -- I think they were specifically talking about F#. It's a solution you open up and there are a bunch of broken unit tests. Fixing them walks you through the steps of learning the language. I want to check it out, but I was driving in my car and I have no idea what the name of the project is or which dot net rocks episode it was. Google hasn't helped much. Any idea?

• Font rendering in Firefox is blurry

  A picture is worth a thousand words... so does anyone know how to fix this font blurriness in Firefox? (You'll need to right-click the picture below go to View Image to view it full-size; it's too small to see anything here.) Note: My other applications (and the Firefox non-client area, as you can see in the screen) are completely fine, so obviously going to System-Appearance and changing the font settings isn't fixing the situation. Edit: Not letting web pages to use their own fonts also doesn't help: See how the upper one is still sharper? Also, Firefox's own menu bar doesn't render the same way as the page content (menu bar below, page content above). They're both Segoe UI:

• Disk utility running for a long time

  I had a spare, old external usb hard disk which stopped working long time back due to improper removal of disk. I tried fixing it in windows (when I did not have ubuntu yet), however I couldn't fix it. So I tried formatting the disk and creating a new partition using the disk utility in ubuntu. However it seems to keep running without any indication of the progress or whatsoever. I have no idea what is happening. I have attached a screenshot below to show what I mean. As you can from the screenshot above it seems to be working on it but no indication on the progress or what it is doing. Any attempt to exit it or do any other task like safe removal or format partition leads to the the following dialog box. What should I do? Wait or restart the computer..???

• Website where you can see how other programmers write their code

  I remember seeing a website where people upload videos of themselves writing code. However, I can not find that site now. The purpose is to see how others code, to see how they refactor their code, to see how they use their paradigms, etc. Update: I remember that the video contains almost no audio, it's only one guy writing code, making mistakes, typos, fixing mistakes. If I read the final code, I can figure out how it works, but if I see how the code was wrote and what kind of mistakes were made along the way, then I can better understand it. I guess this is the main reason that they make this kind of video.

• Testing loses its effectiveness if all programmers don't use them

  Let's assume you are convinced that the extra time spent unit testing has merit and improves production. Does that still hold up when everyone working on the same code doesn't use them? This question makes me wonder if fixing tests that everyone doesn't use is a waste of time. If you correct a test so the new code will pass, you're assuming the new code is correct. The person updating the test better have a firm understanding of the reasoning behind the code change and decide if the test or the new code needs to be fixed. This much inconsistency in a team when it comes to testing is probably an indication of other problems as well. There is a certain amount of risk involved that someone else on the team will alter code that is covered by testing. Is this the point where testing becomes counter-productive?

• Authentication issue with CUPS 5.3.1 on SMB Printer

  I am trying to print to a samba printer via CUPS. I have configured the printer allright, but there seems to be a problem with authentication. The error message I get is Session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE The GUI also tells me: Idle - Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) It used to work with previous versions of CUPS (1.4.3 and 1.4.6) under Ubuntu 11.04 I am doing this on a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, CUPS version 1.5.3. I have tried changing some rights relating to apparmor, with no success as described here: http://www.compdigitec.com/labs/2010/01/16/fixing-usrlibcupsbackendsmb-failed-error-in-ubuntu/ I have been working with Ubuntu for years - but this is the kind of problem I need help with.

• AABB > AABB collision response?

  I'm really confused about how to fix this in 3d? I want it so that I can slide along cubes but without getting caught if there's 2 adjacent cubes. I've gotten it so that I can do x collision, with sliding, and y, and z, but I can't do them together, probably because I don't know how to resolve it correctly. e.g. [] [] []^ []O [] O is the player, ^ is the direction the player is moving, with the methods which I was trying I would get stuck between the cubes because the z axis was responding and kicking me out :/. I don't know how to resolve this in all 3 direction, like how would I go about telling which direction I have to resolve in. My previous methods involved me checking 4 points in a axis aligned square around the player, I was checking if these points where inside the cubes and if they where fixing my position, but I couldn't get it working correctly. Help is appreciated. edit: pretend all the blocks are touching.

• Microsoft StyleCop is now Open Source

  I have previously talked about Microsoft StyleCop. For those that might not know about it, StyleCop is a source analysis tool (different from the static analysis that FxCop performs) that analyzes the source code directly. As a result, it focuses on more design (or style) issues such as layout, readability and documentation. In an interesting move (and one that I am happy to see), Microsoft has decided to make StyleCop an open source project (under the MS-PL license) available on CodePlex. (The project site isn’t up  yet, but should be in the next few weeks.) This will give the development community the opportunity to help contribute to the project, expanding support to other languages (currently it only supports C#), adding features, and fixing bugs. Shortly after the CodePlex site is up, StyleCop 4.4 will be released which includes support for C# 4.0 as well as a large number of bug fixes and other improvements. • Bloom shader makes it impossible to render black?

  I am playing around with the bloom shader from the XNA sample page, to do some glow shading. I am rendering primitive vector-ish squares of linelists/linestrips, on a background. However, I am facing a few problems. With a black background and white squares, I can actually see the squares. However, with a white background and black squares, I can't see them at all. Why is this happening, and is there any way of me fixing it? Can I modify my bloom shader to also "glow" dark elements, if that's what is causing it?

• New to Ubuntu - 12.04.1 Kernel Panic on Installation

  I'm a complete Ubuntu and even Linux newbie. I'm learning here, so I'm grateful for any info to help me learn more about this. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with a Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM. It's older but it's only going to be doing some small stuff for me when I get it up and going. I've tried installing several versions of Linux (but I really, really want Ubuntu) and I keep getting a similar kernel panic message. The problem is I don't have a clue what that means or how to begin fixing it. I would appreciate any help to get my machine up and going. I have already tried Installing alternate Ubuntu versions Burning multiple 12.04.1 disks Installing other versions of Linux I have a picture of the screen to share; however, I can't post due to the fact that I don't have enough reputation points on this forum because I'm a newbie. • How to convince management to deal with technical debt?

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• Can I use DllImport/PInvoke in libraries loaded as Assets in Unity Free?

  I am interested in using utilising third-party libraries in Unity Free. I know Unity can use managed libraries as Assets, but only the Pro version supports using native libraries. (DllImport within scripts). This thread however suggests that it is possible to import DLLs in the free version. I would like to utilise native libraries (as a hobbyist I cannot afford Pro), but want to do it the supported way so I don't have to worry about Unity 'fixing' this hole if that is what it is. Is there any supported way to use native libraries with Unity free? (i.e. does that thread suggest a workaround or is it a 'bug'? Is it supported to use DllImport/PInvoke in libraries loaded as assets? (could I create a wrapper myself?)

• What's the importance of the "title" tag?

  Talking with some other people recently, it came up an interesting topic. The core question at hand is: What's the real importance and weight of the <title> tag in a web site? For instance, what are the consequences if a site has the same <title> tag on all the pages, reporting only the site name? Or better (or worse) no title tag at all? Will that be a little/medium/huge SEO problem? How will the pages appear on search engines? Will fixing it in a later stage be problematic since pages have already been indexed? How does it compromise the overall usability/accessibility/experience? Is that a "feature" that can be omitted, or it can't even be considered a "feature" but a core element? I have quite my opinion on this topic, but I'd really love to hear what other experts (you) think about it.

• Why would I want to install node.js in my Rails Application?

  Okay guys, I'm super confused. I thought node.js was a sever side framwork, basically the js version of Ruby's Rails or PHP's Zend. However, I'm having some difficulty with turbolinks, and it seems to be the way to fix it is through installing node.js I mean, I don't understand this at all. How can two frameworks work together like this? Also, it's not a gem (that REALLY would have confused me), you have to install node.js it onto your local machine by running (in the case of Ubuntu) sudo apt-get install nodejs Firstly, how does this totally separate framwork have any bearing on rails? Secondly, surely this isn't fixing the problem forever? When you specify a gem in your gemfile, the server knows what external libraries to install. How does the server know to install nodejs?

  I understand that Agile team should be self organized and self driven, but is there a provision that I can have someone who will allot tasks to developers and ensure that all user stories will be completed on time?? For example if there are two persons in an agile team who are not self motivated to take up tasks and they will work only when task is assigned to them with a deadline, how can we deal this in Agile? The problem I face is that no one is fixing the deadlines for the tasks and the team is under delivering for the last two sprints. It will be better if we can have someone who can fix deadlines.   After installing Konquerer and restarting my laptop i got the following error while trying to open, edit or access files as root from within Terminal (which is existencial for me). root@linuxBox:/home/v2r# gnome-open /home/ (gnome-open:2686): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon: //bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: No protocol specified Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. • Studies on code documentation productivity gains/losses

  Hi everyone, After much searching, I have failed to answer a basic question pertaining to an assumed known in the software development world: WHAT IS KNOWN: Enforcing a strict policy on adequate code documentation (be it Doxygen tags, Javadoc, or simply an abundance of comments) adds over-head to the time required to develop code. BUT: Having thorough documentation (or even an API) brings with it productivity gains (one assumes) in new and seasoned developers when they are adding features, or fixing bugs down the road. THE QUESTION: Is the added development time required to guarantee such documentation offset by the gains in productivity down-the-road (in a strictly economical sense)? I am looking for case studies, or answers that can bring with them objective evidence supporting the conclusions that are drawn. Thanks in advance!

• The cost of longer delay between development and QA

  At my current position, QA has become a bottleneck. We have had the unfortunate occurence of features being held out of the current build so that QA could finish testing. This means features that are done being developed may not get tested for 2-3 weeks after the developer has already moved on. With dev moving faster thean QA, this time gap is only going to get bigger. I keep flipping through my copy of Code Compelte, looking for a "Hard Data" snippet that shows the cost of fixing defects grows exponentially the longer it exists. Can someone point me to some studies that back up this concept? I am trying to convince the powers that be that the QA bottleneck is a lot more costly than they think.

• fix a broken ubuntu installation from pendrive

  Something went wrong in the upgrade of my Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 The upgrade basically crashed halfway through. On booting I was thrown into a maintainence screen. I found some online instructions for fixing with the package manager ... Which seemed to do a lot of setting up. But then crashed saying package is in a bad inconsistent state. Now I'm in a position where Ubuntu starts again, but goes into a low-res screen and there's no WiFi. I have no Ethernet cable connection but I did download the 13.10 iso on another machine and put it on a pen drive. So I'd like to know there's a way of asking the machine from inside Ubuntu to redo its upgrade from the data on the pendrive rather than WiFi. Is this possible? Cheers Phil
