    Everytime I try to install this 2 updates I get the same error while I've succesfully installed other updates. I've tried to disable NOD32 antivirus and Spybot resident with no result. I've also tried to download the updates and open with the Windows Update Standalone Installer but it comes up with a message which states "The update is not applicable to your computer".

  • Dashboard Devmode w/o "Always on Top" Possible?

    I am using (and loving) OS X's Dashboard in dev mode ('defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES') which lets you put the widgets on your desktop directly. The only downside is the widgets are "always on top". So all windows end up going under the widgets instead of above. Is there any way to disable this?

  • VMware Workstation reboot 32-bit host when starting 32/64-bit guest using VT-x

    I'm trying to start 64-bit guest (MacOSX and Windows7) on 32-bit host (Hardened Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.28-hardened-r9) using VMware Workstation (6.5.3.185404 and 7.0.1.227600). If VT-X disabled in BIOS, VMware refuse to start 64-bit guest (as expected). If VT-X enabled in BIOS, VMware start guest without complaining, but then, in about a second (I suppose as soon as guest try to switch on 64-bit) my host reboots (actually, it's more like reset - normal reboot procedure skipped and BIOS POST start immediately). My hardware is Core 2 Duo 6600 on ASUS P5B-Deluxe with latest stable BIOS 1101. I've power-cycled system, then enabled Vanderpool in BIOS. My CPU doesn't support Trusted Execution Technology, and there no way to disable it in BIOS. I've rebooted several times after that, sometimes with power-cycled, and ensure Vandertool is enabled in BIOS. I've also run VMware-guest64check-5.5.0-18463 tool, and it report "This host is capable of running a 64-bit guest operating system under this VMware product.". About a year ago I tried to disable hardened in kernel to ensure this isn't because of PaX/GrSecurity, but that doesn't help. I have not checked 32-bit guests with VT-X enabled yet, but without VT-X they works ok. ASUS provide "beta" BIOS updates, but according to their descriptions these updates doesn't fix this issue, so I'm not sure is it good idea to try it. My best guess now it's motherboard/BIOS bug. Any ideas? Update 1: I've tried to boot vt.iso provided at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8978 and here is it report: CPU 0: VT is enabled on this core CPU 1: VT is enabled on this core Update 2: I've just tried to boot 32-bit guests (Windows7, Ubuntu9.04 and Gentoo) using all possible virtualization modes. In Automatic, Automatic with Replay, Binary translation everything works, in Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI I got message "This host does not support EPT. Using software virtualization with a software MMU." and everything works. BUT in Intel VT-x or AMD-V mode all 32-bit guests reset host just like 64-bit guests! So, this issue is not specific to 64-bit guests. One more thing. Using Intel VT-x or AMD-V mode for both 32/64-bit guests my host reset right after starting VM, i.e. before VM BIOS POST and before guest even start booting. But using Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI VM BIOS runs ok, then 64-bit guests start booting (Windows7 completed "Loading files" progressbar), and only after that host reset.

  • IRP_MJ_WRITE latency up to 15 seconds

    We have written an application that performs small (22kB) writes to multiple files at once (one thread performing asynchronous queued writes to multiple locations on behalf of other threads) on the same local volume (RAID1). 99.9% of the writes are low-latency but occasionally (maybe every minute or two) we get one or two huge latency writes (I have seen 10 seconds and above) without any real explanation. Platform: Win2003 Server with NTFS. Monitoring: Sysinternals Process Monitor (see link below) and our own application logging. We have tried multiple things to try and solve this that have been gleaned from a few websites, e.g.: Making the first part of file names unique to aid 8.3 name generation Writing files to multiple directories Changing Intel Disk Write Caching Windows File/Printer Sharing Minimize memory used Balance Maximize data throughput for file sharing Maximize data throughput for network applications System-Advanced-Performance-Advanced NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate - use fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1 disable 8.3 name generation - use "fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1" + restart Enable a large size file system cache Disable paging of the kernel code IO Page Lock Limit Turn Off (or On) the Indexing Service But nothing seems to make much difference. There's a whole host of things we haven't tried yet but we wondered if anyone had come across the same problem, a reason and a solution (programmatic or not)? We can reproduce the problem using IOMeter and a simple setup: Start IOMeter and remove all but the first worker thread in 'Topology' using the disconnect button. Select the Worker thread and put a cross in the box next to the disk you want to use in the Disk Targets tab and put '2000000' in Maximum Disk Size (NOTE: must have at least 1GB free space; sector size is 512 bytes) Next create a new access specification and add it to the worker thread: Transfer Request Size = 22kB 100% Sequential Percent of Access Spec = 100% Percent Read/Write = 100% Write Change Results Display Update Frequency to 5 seconds, Test Setup Run Time to 20 seconds and both 'Number of Workers to Spawn Automatically' settings to zero. Select the Worker Thread in the Topology panel and hit the Duplicate Worker button 59 times to create 60 threads with identical settings. Hit the 'Go' button (green flag) and monitor the Results tab. The 'Maximum I/O Response Time (ms)' always hits at least 3500 on our machine. Our machine isn't exactly slow (Xeon 8 core rack server with 4GB and onboard RAID). I'd be interested to see what other people get. We have a feeling it might be something to do with the NTFS filesystem (ours is currently 75% full of fragmented files) and we are going to try a few things around this principle. But it is also related to disk performance since we don't see it on a RAMDisk and it's not as severe on a RAID10 array. Any help is much appreciated.     We have a ProCurve Switch 2810-48G (J9022A). We need to disable auto negotiation on two ports and manually configure them to be full duplex gige ports. From the web GUI, Configuration Tab, Port Configuration sub tab, I am only presented with the option to configure the port as Auto - 1000. I take this to mean, auto negotiate duplex, manually configure the speed to be gige. How do I manually configure the port such that it is manually configured to use full duplex, 1000 mbs?

    I've been searching for the reasons why IP multicast isn't widely supported on the Public Internet, and a commonly-cited reason is the difficulty ISPs have in tracking Multicast usage for later billing. Given this difficulty, since ISPs control the routers and they're not forced to support Multicast (as per IPv4), they just disable it. I couldn't find what this difficulty was though. Since an ISP has full control of any inbound and outbound traffic, be it Unicast or Multicast, what's the difficulty in tracking and billing the latter that does not exist in the former?

  • tproxy squid bridge very slow when cache is full

    I have installed a bridge tproxy proxy in a fast server with 8GB ram. The traffic is around 60Mb/s. When I start for first time the proxy (with the cache empty) the proxy works very well but when the cache becomes full (few hours later) the bridge goes very slow, the traffic goes below 10Mb/s and the proxy server becomes unusable. Any hints of what may be happening?     I prefer to disable httpd dynamic module loading on my production server. I've been using mod_jk linked statically into httpd for quite a long time and it proved to be stable. Now I would like to add Ruby Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) to my httpd. I wonder if it is possible to link it statically into Apache httpd the same way too? (without producing a huge httpd) If it is, are there any potential pitfalls, safety or performance concerns having both mod_jk and mod_rails within the same executable? Thanks

  • Working around Gmail mailing-list "feature."

    I'm using Google Apps for my domain's e-mail via IMAP. Whenever I send mail to a mailing list, I don't receive a copy of my own mail back in my inbox. According to Google, this is a "feature." Is there a way to disable this "feature" so that all mail I send to mailing lists appears in my inbox just like all other e-mail? Perhaps something along the lines of this method for disabling Google's spam filter??

We use file success auditing on some files so I can't disable it but this deluge is filling up the logs and making reporting tricky. What is the harm of changing the auditing settings on the windows folder? What are the recommended settings to put on the files for those people doing system state backups? Thanks,

    My windows laptop is directly connected to 192.168.1.0/24 (wireless lan). I access 10.21.0.0/16 though a router that is connected to both networks. The routing works fine with this configuration. I have a VPN, that connects to 10.0.0.0/8. The VPN network doesn't actually use any IPs in the 10.21.0.0/16 range. So I should be able to configure my routing table to route all the 10.21.0.0/16 IPs through the wireless lan, and all other 10.0.0.0/8 through the VPN. My understanding is that I can do this if the metric for the 10.21.0.0 is lower than that of the 10.0.0.0. The VPN (10.0.0.0) is automatically assigned metric 20. I have manually assigned the WLAN a metric of 1. I manually add an entry to the routing table with this command: route add 10.21.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.201 metric 1 The route is then assigned a metric of 2 (which is expected). The problem is that it doesn't work. I can't ping any machine on the 10.21.0.0 network. But I can access other stuff on the 10.0.0.0. I can also access stuff on the 192.168.1.0. To debug this i've done the following. Run tcpdump on the router (192.168.1.201). I can verify that no packets for 10.21.0.0 arrive on that interface. Disable iptables on the router. Disable the windows firewall. Run wireshark on my laptop, to try and see which interface the ping requests go to. But I can't see them go anywhere!! The ping command doesn't receive any 'destination unreachable' messages. Here is the relevant section of the routing table.     We have recently moved from a windows 2003 server to an 08 R2. Running the program from the command line says that the magic packet has successfully been sent but it never actually reached the destination computer. We have two NIC's on the server. If I disable the NIC that isn't (currently) in use, WOL will work fine, but in the future we will need to use both NIC's. Also, we use MAC Addresses for WOL.

    I am very stupid. I applied a windows firewall rule that blocks all tcp connection and thus kicking me out of remote desktop on a dedicated server. I managed to get into recovery via VNC, which is basically a windows xp recovery system. I have access to the physical files of the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation, but I don't know how to disable the firewall so I can reboot from recovery and connect to the W2K8 via remote desktop. Please, help.

  • Windows' MSN Zone internet games will not launch due to error

    I keep getting this error when trying to launch Internet Spades on a Windows XP machine: Spades is unable to start. Close some other programs and try again, or try reinstalling Spades using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. I used the Add/Remove programs to disable, then enable games. It asked for the Windows XP CD which I put in. Did some stuff like it was working. Still get the same error message.
