I've abstracted the problem out here, and I'm hoping someone can help me understand how what I'm doing fails. I'm looping over a list of Items. These Items are actually instances of the subclasses TypeA and TypeB. For Type A, I want to display the options, for Type B I want to display the demands. When rendering the page for the first time, this works fine. However, when I post back to the page for some action, I get an error: [3/26/10 12:52:32:781 EST] 0000008c SystemErr R javax.faces.FacesException: Error getting property 'options' from bean of type TypeB at com.sun.faces.lifecycle.ApplyRequestValuesPhase.execute(ApplyRequestValuesPhase.java:89) at com.sun.faces.lifecycle.LifecycleImpl.phase(LifecycleImpl.java(Compiled Code)) at com.sun.faces.lifecycle.LifecycleImpl.execute(LifecycleImpl.java:91) at com.ibm.faces.portlet.FacesPortlet.processAction(FacesPortlet.java:193) My grasp on the JSF lifecyle is very rough. At this point, i understand there is an error in the ApplyRequestValues Phases which is very early and so the previous state is restored and nothing changes. What I don't understand is that in order to fufill the condition for rendering "item.typeA" that object has to be an instance of TypeA. But here, it looks like that object passed the condition even though it was an instance of TypeB. It is like it is evaluating the inner dataTable (InnerItems) before evaluating the outer (outerItems). My working assumption is that I just don't understand how/when the rendered attribute is actually evaluated.

  Basically, I want to be able to assign objects created within filters to members in a base controller from which every controller extends. Any possible way to do that? Here's how I tried, but haven't got to make it work. What I'm trying to achieve is to have all my controllers extend a base controller. The base controller's constructor would be used to assign values to its members, those values being pulled from the session map. Example below.   I want to set text above and below a JButton's icon. At the moment, in order to achieve this, I override the layout manager and use three JLabel instances (i.e. 2 for text and 1 for the icon). But this seems like a dirty solution. Is there a more direct way of doing this? Note -I'm not looking for a multi-line solution, I'm looking for a multi-label solution. These menu items have custom images and I finally managed to have them displayed correctly using transparency masks. The only problem that still persists is, that the icons look really ugly and unprofessional, when the menu items are disabled. Instead of getting grayed out smoothly, the icons become flat gray chunks.

  I'm talking about the tooltip that pops up when you hover your mouse over a class in your source (which also helps with intellisense and auto completion), which describes what a class/method/etc does. I find it very annoying that it doesn't show what superclass the class (being described) extends or what interfaces it implements. Is there a way to make eclipse show the additional information?

Basically I need to search on any field but I have a "zip" field as one of the facet fields. I have a Solr repository . This can be achieved easily by using a simple table model class which extends the DefaultTableModel and a cell renderer and editor class which implements the TableCellRenderer and TableCellEditor interfaces respectively. What I really couldn't manage to do is to make the table to display initially one of the elements (rows) initially selected.   Heres the situation. Component B extends component A and overrides the init method to accept a different parameter. A also has a create method that calls init. If i have an instance of B and i call create, its calling the wrong init - it calls init in B, where i need it to call init in A. I dont want to call super.init() as there may not always be a super. Is there any way to specify to call the init in the parent component?

The Co-ordinate system in this case is the canonical opengl co-ordinate system which extends from (-1,-1,-1) to (1,,1,1). My question is, is this coordinate system right-handed or left-handed? A broader question: Is there a document with OpenGL which can list all the mathematical conventions followed by the API?

  Trying to make a controller helper to have similar functionality in some controllers using the preDispatch method. Error: Fatal error: Class 'Helper_Action_Test' not found in /var/www/zend.dev/application/Bootstrap.php on line 9` Application layout /Application /Helpers **/Actions** this is where i will save the classes /Views /modules /configs /layouts /Bootstrap.php In the Bootstrap I have added: protected function _initActionHelpers(){ Zend_Controller_Action_HelperBroker::addHelper(new Helper_Action_Test()); } In the helper file I have: class Helper_Action_Test extends Zend_Controller_Action_Helper_Abstract{ public function preDispatch() { echo 'Test'; } } Any ideas?

  Why can't I cast a base class instance to a derived class? For example, if I have a class B which extends a class C, why can't I do this? B b=(B)(new C()); or this? C c=new C(); B b=(B)c;
