    I have 2 USB DVD drives. One that I borrowed from work which I have been testing with which works fine for me, which is why I brought one of myself. When I try and mount my new dvd drive this happens: [18:06:45][arcath@londinium][~] sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd/ mount: special device /dev/sr0 does not exist /dev/sr0 is only in the list when the drive is attached and it works on other machines using the same cables so it must be something with my server.     I have two FullHD monitors attached to my ATI graphics card [2]. The resolution of both of them is detected properly without any modifications to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I can run both of them in clone mode. However, when I try to run them next to each other, I got the following error: The selected configuration for displays could not be applied. If tried to fix this according to [1].     When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it?     I am running out of space in the /var partition. I have plenty of space in my /home partition. How do I shrink the /home partition to make more space for the /var partition? I have read some blogs that say to use the GParted Live CD. As a new user, I'm not quite sure if this is the ideal route. What is the best way to create more space for /var ?     My drive got corrupt after a thunderstorm. It used to be 1 partition of 2.5tb but now it shows 2 partitions. It's weird because 300gig free space is about how much it had before corrupting, but it was part of the first partition. I tried $ sudo resize2fs -f /dev/sdb1 Resizing the filesystem on /dev/sdb1 to 536870911 (4k) blocks. resize2fs: Can't read an block bitmap while trying to resize /dev/sdb1 Please run 'e2fsck -fy /dev/sdb1' to fix the filesystem after the aborted resize operation. sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdb1 e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011) The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 610471680 blocks The physical size of the device is 536870911 blocks Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! Abort? n .... Error reading block 537395215 (Invalid argument) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error<y>? yes Force rewrite<y>? yes Error writing block 537395215 (Invalid argument) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error<y>? yes ... A lot of these. I can't use e2fsck -y because the first question aborts if I say "y". If I put a weight on the 'y' key it fails because none of the errors were really fixed. I asked this question before and tried using gparted but gparted fails because the first thing it does is: e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1 giving the same error. The disk status says healthy. There are no bad blocks. This is very frustrating because I can see the data in testdisk and it looks like it's all there. I already bought another 2.5tb drive and made a clone using dd. The next step if I can't fix this is to wipe that drive and just move the data with testdisk, but it seems certain folders will copy infinitely until the drive is full because of symlinks or errors so it's also a difficult option. sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sdb: 2500.5 GB, 2500495958016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 304001 cylinders, total 4883781168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes Disk identifier: 0x0005da5e Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 2048 4294969342 2147483647+ 83 Linux sudo badblocks -b 4096 -n -o badfile /dev/sdb 610471680 536870911 badfile is empty I also tried changing the superblock with "fsck -b" but all of them are the same.

  • Mount a remote Linux hard drive as another Windows 7 partition during boot?

    I would like to mount a hard drive on a remote computer (running on CentOS 6) as a Windows drive so that I can install programs to that drive. The primary hard drive for my Windows machine (which is at home) is pretty small, I have a Linux server sitting in a remote data center with a much larger hard drive and allow me to install more stuff. I know most of you are going to say Samba, unfortunately the biggest problem for me in this case is that I can not mount Samba as a network share unless I start OpenVPN or SSH tunneling first, which is not good for my case because I will install some startup programs to the remote drive as well. Therefore, the remote drive has to be ready and work just like another drive BEFORE any of the startup programs start to load. Is that possible? My home PC has Windows 7 Professional 32 bit installed and the remote server is a Xen virtual server running on CentOS 6. I have admin/root permissions for both. Thanks a lot!

  • W520 External monitor setup with Ubuntu 12.10

    I just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64-Bit Desktop on my Lenovo W520. It looks like there are a lot of challenges around making it work with out of the box Nouveau drivers or propriety Nvidia drivers or Intel GPU. I looked at couple of notes on how to make it work with Bumblebee with Optimus Nvidia. None of them seems to work for 12.10. Anybody has a solid answer on this? It seems like a lot of people are suffering from this. Here is my xrandr output. Let me know if you need any additional information.   • Poor performance after reinstalling to a USB drive

    I am currently running Ubuntu 11.10 off of a SanDisk 16GB USB. I installed it using a Live USB with the following partition configuration: 6GB Primary /dos FAT32 5GB Logical / ext4 5GB Logical /home ext4 I don't have a hard disk, and don't see myself getting one anytime soon. I rely solely on this 16GB, and two other 4GB USBs, one of which I used as the LiveUSB. I bring the USBs around, and even use the install at work. I previously used an install that used a swap file. It functioned fine for the most part, save for a few slow moments, but I came across this post, and it got me thinking about my USB's life, so I reinstalled with the current config. My problem now is that it is slower. Applications like Firefox would hang more often. In my previous setup (the automatically partitioned setup), Firefox would start hanging if I was running an unzip or install task on the same partition as /. Now however, it would hang if I had another window open i.e. the system settings window. My guess is that it may have something to do with the swap file or the install being on a Logical partition rather than a Primary partition, but I don't know. Any insight as to why it has slowed down?

  • Installed 11.10 on shared drive, when other partition mounted, HDD shown full

    I just partitioned a 500GB HDD 50%-50%. I installed ubuntu 11.10 on one half and copied a load of files onto the other. When I don't mount the other partition, it shows I have used 12.1GB and have about 240GB free. The second I mount the other partition, I can't copy any files over and get a disk full message. There is about 10-20GB Free on the other partition. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?
