  • Project Jigsaw: Late for the train: The Q&A

    - by Mark Reinhold
    I recently proposed, to the Java community in general and to the SE 8 (JSR 337) Expert Group in particular, to defer Project Jigsaw from Java 8 to Java 9. I also proposed to aim explicitly for a regular two-year release cycle going forward. Herewith a summary of the key questions I’ve seen in reaction to these proposals, along with answers. Making the decision Q Has the Java SE 8 Expert Group decided whether to defer the addition of a module system and the modularization of the Platform to Java SE 9? A No, it has not yet decided. Q By when do you expect the EG to make this decision? A In the next month or so. Q How can I make sure my voice is heard? A The EG will consider all relevant input from the wider community. If you have a prominent blog, column, or other communication channel then there’s a good chance that we’ve already seen your opinion. If not, you’re welcome to send it to the Java SE 8 Comments List, which is the EG’s official feedback channel. Q What’s the overall tone of the feedback you’ve received? A The feedback has been about evenly divided as to whether Java 8 should be delayed for Jigsaw, Jigsaw should be deferred to Java 9, or some other, usually less-realistic, option should be taken. Project Jigsaw Q Why is Project Jigsaw taking so long? A Project Jigsaw started at Sun, way back in August 2008. Like many efforts during the final years of Sun, it was not well staffed. Jigsaw initially ran on a shoestring, with just a handful of mostly part-time engineers, so progress was slow. During the integration of Sun into Oracle all work on Jigsaw was halted for a time, but it was eventually resumed after a thorough consideration of the alternatives. Project Jigsaw was really only fully staffed about a year ago, around the time that Java 7 shipped. We’ve added a few more engineers to the team since then, but that can’t make up for the inadequate initial staffing and the time lost during the transition. Q So it’s really just a matter of staffing limitations and corporate-integration distractions? A Aside from these difficulties, the other main factor in the duration of the project is the sheer technical difficulty of modularizing the JDK. Q Why is modularizing the JDK so hard? A There are two main reasons. The first is that the JDK code base is deeply interconnected at both the API and the implementation levels, having been built over many years primarily in the style of a monolithic software system. We’ve spent considerable effort eliminating or at least simplifying as many API and implementation dependences as possible, so that both the Platform and its implementations can be presented as a coherent set of interdependent modules, but some particularly thorny cases remain. Q What’s the second reason? A We want to maintain as much compatibility with prior releases as possible, most especially for existing classpath-based applications but also, to the extent feasible, for applications composed of modules. Q Is modularizing the JDK even necessary? Can’t you just put it in one big module? A Modularizing the JDK, and more specifically modularizing the Java SE Platform, will enable standard yet flexible Java runtime configurations scaling from large servers down to small embedded devices. In the long term it will enable the convergence of Java SE with the higher-end Java ME Platforms. Q Is Project Jigsaw just about modularizing the JDK? A As originally conceived, Project Jigsaw was indeed focused primarily upon modularizing the JDK. The growing demand for a truly standard module system for the Java Platform, which could be used not just for the Platform itself but also for libraries and applications built on top of it, later motivated expanding the scope of the effort. Q As a developer, why should I care about Project Jigsaw? A The introduction of a modular Java Platform will, in the long term, fundamentally change the way that Java implementations, libraries, frameworks, tools, and applications are designed, built, and deployed. Q How much progress has Project Jigsaw made? A We’ve actually made a lot of progress. Much of the core functionality of the module system has been prototyped and works at both compile time and run time. We’ve extended the Java programming language with module declarations, worked out a structure for modular source trees and corresponding compiled-class trees, and implemented these features in javac. We’ve defined an efficient module-file format, extended the JVM to bootstrap a modular JRE, and designed and implemented a preliminary API. We’ve used the module system to make a good first cut at dividing the JDK and the Java SE API into a coherent set of modules. Among other things, we’re currently working to retrofit the java.util.ServiceLoader API to support modular services. Q I want to help! How can I get involved? A Check out the project page, read the draft requirements and design overview documents, download the latest prototype build, and play with it. You can tell us what you think, and follow the rest of our work in real time, on the jigsaw-dev list. The Java Platform Module System JSR Q What’s the relationship between Project Jigsaw and the eventual Java Platform Module System JSR? A At a high level, Project Jigsaw has two phases. In the first phase we’re exploring an approach to modularity that’s markedly different from that of existing Java modularity solutions. We’ve assumed that we can change the Java programming language, the virtual machine, and the APIs. Doing so enables a design which can strongly enforce module boundaries in all program phases, from compilation to deployment to execution. That, in turn, leads to better usability, diagnosability, security, and performance. The ultimate goal of the first phase is produce a working prototype which can inform the work of the Module-System JSR EG. Q What will happen in the second phase of Project Jigsaw? A The second phase will produce the reference implementation of the specification created by the Module-System JSR EG. The EG might ultimately choose an entirely different approach than the one we’re exploring now. If and when that happens then Project Jigsaw will change course as necessary, but either way I think that the end result will be better for having been informed by our current work. Maven & OSGi Q Why not just use Maven? A Maven is a software project management and comprehension tool. As such it can be seen as a kind of build-time module system but, by its nature, it does nothing to support modularity at run time. Q Why not just adopt OSGi? A OSGi is a rich dynamic component system which includes not just a module system but also a life-cycle model and a dynamic service registry. The latter two facilities are useful to some kinds of sophisticated applications, but I don’t think they’re of wide enough interest to be standardized as part of the Java SE Platform. Q Okay, then why not just adopt the module layer of OSGi? A The OSGi module layer is not operative at compile time; it only addresses modularity during packaging, deployment, and execution. As it stands, moreover, it’s useful for library and application modules but, since it’s built strictly on top of the Java SE Platform, it can’t be used to modularize the Platform itself. Q If Maven addresses modularity at build time, and the OSGi module layer addresses modularity during deployment and at run time, then why not just use the two together, as many developers already do? A The combination of Maven and OSGi is certainly very useful in practice today. These systems have, however, been built on top of the existing Java platform; they have not been able to change the platform itself. This means, among other things, that module boundaries are weakly enforced, if at all, which makes it difficult to diagnose configuration errors and impossible to run untrusted code securely. The prototype Jigsaw module system, by contrast, aims to define a platform-level solution which extends both the language and the JVM in order to enforce module boundaries strongly and uniformly in all program phases. Q If the EG chooses an approach like the one currently being taken in the Jigsaw prototype, will Maven and OSGi be made obsolete? A No, not at all! No matter what approach is taken, to ensure wide adoption it’s essential that the standard Java Platform Module System interact well with Maven. Applications that depend upon the sophisticated features of OSGi will no doubt continue to use OSGi, so it’s critical that implementations of OSGi be able to run on top of the Java module system and, if suitably modified, support OSGi bundles that depend upon Java modules. Ideas for how to do that are currently being explored in Project Penrose. Java 8 & Java 9 Q Without Jigsaw, won’t Java 8 be a pretty boring release? A No, far from it! It’s still slated to include the widely-anticipated Project Lambda (JSR 335), work on which has been going very well, along with the new Date/Time API (JSR 310), Type Annotations (JSR 308), and a set of smaller features already in progress. Q Won’t deferring Jigsaw to Java 9 delay the eventual convergence of the higher-end Java ME Platforms with Java SE? A It will slow that transition, but it will not stop it. To allow progress toward that convergence to be made with Java 8 I’ve suggested to the Java SE 8 EG that we consider specifying a small number of Profiles which would allow compact configurations of the SE Platform to be built and deployed. Q If Jigsaw is deferred to Java 9, would the Oracle engineers currently working on it be reassigned to other Java 8 features and then return to working on Jigsaw again after Java 8 ships? A No, these engineers would continue to work primarily on Jigsaw from now until Java 9 ships. Q Why not drop Lambda and finish Jigsaw instead? A Even if the engineers currently working on Lambda could instantly switch over to Jigsaw and immediately become productive—which of course they can’t—there are less than nine months remaining in the Java 8 schedule for work on major features. That’s just not enough time for the broad review, testing, and feedback which such a fundamental change to the Java Platform requires. Q Why not ship the module system in Java 8, and then modularize the platform in Java 9? A If we deliver a module system in one release but don’t use it to modularize the JDK until some later release then we run a big risk of getting something fundamentally wrong. If that happens then we’d have to fix it in the later release, and fixing fundamental design flaws after the fact almost always leads to a poor end result. Q Why not ship Jigsaw in an 8.5 release, less than two years after 8? Or why not just ship a new release every year, rather than every other year? A Many more developers work on the JDK today than a couple of years ago, both because Oracle has dramatically increased its own investment and because other organizations and individuals have joined the OpenJDK Community. Collectively we don’t, however, have the bandwidth required to ship and then provide long-term support for a big JDK release more frequently than about every other year. Q What’s the feedback been on the two-year release-cycle proposal? A For just about every comment that we should release more frequently, so that new features are available sooner, there’s been another asking for an even slower release cycle so that large teams of enterprise developers who ship mission-critical applications have a chance to migrate at a comfortable pace.

  • IE issues with my Website (Help me fix my CSS)

    - by cam77
    I'm struggling geting my website to test fully positive in IE, the following problems keep arising, only in IE; My '#grey box' div displaying 200px to the left out of place, and it seems to move with the adjustment of the IE window size, does this in no other browsers, just IE. It creates this unnecessary horizontal scroll. I have the width set to pretty large, but have "overflow: hidden" and again, works fine across except for IE. On a few of my pages, the footer is somewhat cropped and out of place. My biggest concern is the particular page's CSS, pasted below. #container { width : 1265px; height : 920px; background-color : #addceb; overflow : hidden; padding : 0; } #logo { font-size : 38px; height : 167px; width : 427px; margin-left : 435px; padding-top : 20px; margin-bottom : -10px; margin-top: 10px; border : none; } #menunav { width : 100%; background-image : url(../imagesnew/menunav.png); background-repeat : repeat-x; height : 40px; text-align : center; font-size : 14px; font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; overflow : auto; } #menunav ul { list-style-type : none; background-image : url(); height : 40px; width : 800px; margin : auto; } #menunav ul a { background-image : url(); background-repeat : no-repeat; background-position : right; padding-right : 32px; padding-left : 15px; display : block; line-height : 30px; text-decoration : none; font-size : 14px; } #mainbox { position : relative; background-image : url(../premiumslideimgs/premiumbox.png); background-repeat : no-repeat; width : 900px; height : 800px; margin-left : 16%; top : 22px; padding-top : 5px; overflow : hidden; } #simplegallery1 { position : absolute; left : 50%; width : 800px; height : 800px; margin-top : 44px; margin-bottom: -44px; margin-bottom : 240px; margin-left : -397px; background-color : #a1bbfe; padding-top : 0; } #textbelowbox { position : absolute; width : 830px; height : 45px; margin-left : 209px; margin-bottom : 240px; margin-top : -240px; overflow : hidden; } #footer { background-image : url(../imagesnew/footerimg.png); background-repeat : no-repeat; background-position : right; height : 275px; margin-top : -285px; } a:hover { color : #addceb; } #right { float : right; margin-top : 3px; } #left { float : left; margin-left : 30px; } body { font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; background-color : #addceb; margin : 0; padding : 0; } #textabovebox { width : 920px; position : absolute; margin-left : 228px; margin-bottom : 80px; margin-top : 38px; z-index : 2000; font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; } a.submenu:hover { color : #333; font-weight : bolder; } #dialog { font-size : 12px; } #greybox { position : absolute; width : 275px; height : 465px; margin-left : 715px; margin-top : 80px; overflow : hidden; z-index : 2000; } ul { background-image : url(); height : 40px; width : 800px; margin : auto; } ul a { background-image : url(); background-repeat : no-repeat; background-position : right; padding-right : 32px; padding-left : 15px; display : block; line-height : 30px; text-decoration : none; font-size : 14px; } li { float : left; } a:link { color : #ffffff; text-decoration : none; } a:visited { color : #ffffff; text-decoration : none; } a:active { color : #ffffff; text-decoration : none; } a:hover { color : #addceb; } #right { float : right; margin-top : 3px; } #left { float : left; margin-left : 30px; } #text { float : left; margin-left : 30px; } body { font-family : Palatino Linotype, Book Antiqua, Palatino, FreeSerif, serif; padding : 0; margin : 0; } body { background-color : #addceb; } a.submenu:link { color : #333333; } a.submenu:active { color : #333333; } a.submenu:visited { color : #333333; } a.submenu:hover { color : #333333; font-weight : bolder; } { margin: 0; padding: 0; } Please help if you can, thanks a lot.

  • Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

    - by MattDiPasquale
    I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? They may take their page down since it's not rendering correctly, so here's the source of the page just in case: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head id="ctl01_Head1" profile="New Jersey Credit Union • processing an audio wav file with C

    - by sa125
    Hi - I'm working on processing the amplitude of a wav file and scaling it by some decimal factor. I'm trying to wrap my head around how to read and re-write the file in a memory-efficient way while also trying to tackle the nuances of the language (I'm new to C). The file can be in either an 8- or 16-bit format. The way I thought of doing this is by first reading the header data into some pre-defined struct, and then processing the actual data in a loop where I'll read a chunk of data into a buffer, do whatever is needed to it, and then write it to the output. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> typedef struct header { char chunk_id[4]; int chunk_size; char format[4]; char subchunk1_id[4]; int subchunk1_size; short int audio_format; short int num_channels; int sample_rate; int byte_rate; short int block_align; short int bits_per_sample; short int extra_param_size; char subchunk2_id[4]; int subchunk2_size; } header; typedef struct header* header_p; void scale_wav_file(char * input, float factor, int is_8bit) { FILE * infile = fopen(input, "rb"); FILE * outfile = fopen("outfile.wav", "wb"); int BUFSIZE = 4000, i, MAX_8BIT_AMP = 255, MAX_16BIT_AMP = 32678; // used for processing 8-bit file unsigned char inbuff8[BUFSIZE], outbuff8[BUFSIZE]; // used for processing 16-bit file short int inbuff16[BUFSIZE], outbuff16[BUFSIZE]; // header_p points to a header struct that contains the file's metadata fields header_p meta = (header_p)malloc(sizeof(header)); if (infile) { // read and write header data fread(meta, 1, sizeof(header), infile); fwrite(meta, 1, sizeof(meta), outfile); while (!feof(infile)) { if (is_8bit) { fread(inbuff8, 1, BUFSIZE, infile); } else { fread(inbuff16, 1, BUFSIZE, infile); } // scale amplitude for 8/16 bits for (i=0; i < BUFSIZE; ++i) { if (is_8bit) { outbuff8[i] = factor * inbuff8[i]; if ((int)outbuff8[i] > MAX_8BIT_AMP) { outbuff8[i] = MAX_8BIT_AMP; } } else { outbuff16[i] = factor * inbuff16[i]; if ((int)outbuff16[i] > MAX_16BIT_AMP) { outbuff16[i] = MAX_16BIT_AMP; } else if ((int)outbuff16[i] < -MAX_16BIT_AMP) { outbuff16[i] = -MAX_16BIT_AMP; } } } // write to output file for 8/16 bit if (is_8bit) { fwrite(outbuff8, 1, BUFSIZE, outfile); } else { fwrite(outbuff16, 1, BUFSIZE, outfile); } } } // cleanup if (infile) { fclose(infile); } if (outfile) { fclose(outfile); } if (meta) { free(meta); } } int main (int argc, char const *argv[]) { char infile[] = "file.wav"; float factor = 0.5; scale_wav_file(infile, factor, 0); return 0; } I'm getting differing file sizes at the end (by 1k or so, for a 40Mb file), and I suspect this is due to the fact that I'm writing an entire buffer to the output, even though the file may have terminated before filling the entire buffer size. Also, the output file is messed up - won't play or open - so I'm probably doing the whole thing wrong. Any tips on where I'm messing up will be great. Thanks!

  • TabHost / TabWidget - Scale Background Image ?

    - by user359519
    I need to scale my TabWidget background images so they maintain aspect ratio. I am using a TabHost with a TabWidget. I am then using setBackgroundDrawable to set the images. I found a close answer here - Background in tab widget ignore scaling. However, I'm not sure just where to add the new Drawable code. (Working with the HelloTabWidget example, none of my modules use RelativeLayout, and I don't see any layout for "tabcontent".) I also found this thread - Android: Scale a Drawable or background image?. According to it, it sounds like I would have to pre-scale my images, which defeats the whole purpose of making them scaleable. I also found another thread where someone subclassed the Drawable class so it would either not scale, or it would scale properly. I can't find it now, but that seems like a LOT to go through when you should just be able to do something simple like mTab.setScaleType(centerInside). Here's my code: main.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@android:id/tabhost" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="@drawable/main_background"> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <FrameLayout android:id="@android:id/tabcontent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1"/> <TabWidget android:id="@android:id/tabs" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="0"/> </LinearLayout> </TabHost> main activity: tabHost.setOnTabChangedListener(new OnTabChangeListener() { TabHost changedTabHost = getTabHost(); TabWidget changedTabWidget = getTabWidget(); View changedView = changedTabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0); public void onTabChanged(String tabId) { int selectedTab = changedTabHost.getCurrentTab(); TabWidget tw = getTabWidget(); if(selectedTab == 0) { //setTitle("Missions Timeline"); View tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_timeline_on)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(1); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_map_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(2); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_search_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(3); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_news_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(4); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_license_off)); //ImageView iv = (ImageView)tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0).findViewById(android.R.id.icon); //iv.setImageDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_timeline_on)); //iv = (ImageView)tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(1).findViewById(android.R.id.icon); //iv.setImageDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_map_off)); } else if (selectedTab == 1) { //setTitle("Spinoffs Around You"); View tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_timeline_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(1); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_map_on)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(2); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_search_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(3); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_news_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(4); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_license_off)); } I also tried 9patch images, but they wind up being too small. So, what's the best way to go about this?

  • using PixelBender to double the size of a bitmap

    - by jedierikb
    I have a performance question about pixel bender. I want to enlarge many BitmapData (double their size into new BitmapData). I was doing this with as3, but wanted to use pixel bender to get better performance. On my machines, I get great comparative performance out of many pixel bender demonstrations. To my surprise (or bad coding / understanding), I am getting much worse performance out of pixel bender -- 2 seconds to do 3000 scalings vs .5 seconds! I expected to get at least the same performance as as3. What am I doing wrong? I got the straightforward pixel bender code here (and it is included below for easy reference). package { import aCore.aUtil.timingUtils; import flash.display.BitmapData; import flash.display.Shader; import flash.display.ShaderJob; import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.display.StageAlign; import flash.display.StageScaleMode; import flash.events.Event; import flash.geom.Matrix; public class flashFlash extends Sprite { [Embed ( source="pixelbender/bilinearresample.pbj", mimeType="application/octet-stream" ) ] private static var BilinearScaling:Class; public function flashFlash( ):void { stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT; stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE; addEventListener( Event.ENTER_FRAME, efCb, false, 0, true ); } private function efCb( evt:Event ):void { removeEventListener( Event.ENTER_FRAME, efCb, false ); traceTime( "init" ); var srcBmd:BitmapData = new BitmapData( 80, 120, false, 0 ); var destBmd:BitmapData = new BitmapData( 160, 240, false, 0 ); var mx:Matrix = new Matrix( ); mx.scale( 2, 2 ); for (var i:uint = 0; i < 3000; i++) { destBmd.draw( srcBmd, mx ); } traceTime( "scaled with as3" ); // create and configure a Shader object var shader:Shader = new Shader( ); shader.byteCode = new BilinearScaling( ); shader.data.scale.value = [2]; shader.data.src.input = srcBmd; for (var j:uint = 0; j < 3000; j++) { var shaderJob:ShaderJob = new ShaderJob( ); shaderJob.shader = shader; shaderJob.target = destBmd; shaderJob.start( true ); } traceTime( "scaled with pixel bender bilinearresample.pbj" ); } private static var _lastTraceTime:Number = new Date().getTime(); public static function traceTime( note:String ):Number { var nowTime:Number = new Date().getTime(); var diff:Number = (nowTime-_lastTraceTime); trace( "[t" + diff + "] " + note ); _lastTraceTime = nowTime; return diff; } } } And the pixel bender code: <languageVersion : 1.0;> kernel BilinearResample < namespace : "com.brooksandrus.pixelbender"; vendor : "Brooks Andrus"; version : 1; description : "Resizes an image using bilinear resampling.   • A RenderTargetView cannot be created from a NULL Resource

    - by numerical25

  • iPhone multi-touch scale and rotate, how to prevent scale?

    - by russhill
    I have existing code for tracking multi-touch positions and then rotating and scaling the item - in this case an image - appropriately. The code works really well and in itself is perfect, however for this particular task, I need the rotation ONLY. I have spent time trying to work out what is going on in this routine, but maths is not my strong point so wanted to see if anyone could assist? - (CGAffineTransform)incrementalTransformWithTouches:(NSSet *)touches { NSArray *sortedTouches = [[touches allObjects] sortedArrayUsingSelector:@selector(compareAddress:)]; NSInteger numTouches = [sortedTouches count]; // No touches if (numTouches == 0) { return CGAffineTransformIdentity; } // Single touch if (numTouches == 1) { UITouch *touch = [sortedTouches objectAtIndex:0]; CGPoint beginPoint = *(CGPoint *)CFDictionaryGetValue(touchBeginPoints, touch); CGPoint currentPoint = [touch locationInView:self.superview]; return CGAffineTransformMakeTranslation(currentPoint.x - beginPoint.x, currentPoint.y - beginPoint.y); } // If two or more touches, go with the first two (sorted by address) UITouch *touch1 = [sortedTouches objectAtIndex:0]; UITouch *touch2 = [sortedTouches objectAtIndex:1]; CGPoint beginPoint1 = *(CGPoint *)CFDictionaryGetValue(touchBeginPoints, touch1); CGPoint currentPoint1 = [touch1 locationInView:self.superview]; CGPoint beginPoint2 = *(CGPoint *)CFDictionaryGetValue(touchBeginPoints, touch2); CGPoint currentPoint2 = [touch2 locationInView:self.superview]; double layerX = self.center.x; double layerY = self.center.y; double x1 = beginPoint1.x - layerX; double y1 = beginPoint1.y - layerY; double x2 = beginPoint2.x - layerX; double y2 = beginPoint2.y - layerY; double x3 = currentPoint1.x - layerX; double y3 = currentPoint1.y - layerY; double x4 = currentPoint2.x - layerX; double y4 = currentPoint2.y - layerY; // Solve the system: // [a b t1, -b a t2, 0 0 1] * [x1, y1, 1] = [x3, y3, 1] // [a b t1, -b a t2, 0 0 1] * [x2, y2, 1] = [x4, y4, 1] double D = (y1-y2)*(y1-y2) + (x1-x2)*(x1-x2); if (D < 0.1) { return CGAffineTransformMakeTranslation(x3-x1, y3-y1); } double a = (y1-y2)*(y3-y4) + (x1-x2)*(x3-x4); double b = (y1-y2)*(x3-x4) - (x1-x2)*(y3-y4); double tx = (y1*x2 - x1*y2)*(y4-y3) - (x1*x2 + y1*y2)*(x3+x4) + x3*(y2*y2 + x2*x2) + x4*(y1*y1 + x1*x1); double ty = (x1*x2 + y1*y2)*(-y4-y3) + (y1*x2 - x1*y2)*(x3-x4) + y3*(y2*y2 + x2*x2) + y4*(y1*y1 + x1*x1); return CGAffineTransformMake(a/D, -b/D, b/D, a/D, tx/D, ty/D); } I have tried to read up on the way matrix's work, but cannot figure it out entirely. More likely to be the issue is the calculations, which as I mention is not my strong point. What I need from this routine is a transform that performs my rotation but ignores scale - so the distance between the 2 finger touch points is ignored and scale is not affected. I have looked at other routines on the internet to handle multi-touch rotation but all the ones I tried had issues in some way or other, whereas the above code is spot on for scale and rotate actions. Any help appreciated!

  • Generating strongly biased radom numbers for tests

    - by nobody
    I want to run tests with randomized inputs and need to generate 'sensible' random numbers, that is, numbers that match good enough to pass the tested function's preconditions, but hopefully wreak havoc deeper inside its code. math.random() (I'm using Lua) produces uniformly distributed random numbers. Scaling these up will give far more big numbers than small numbers, and there will be very few integers. I would like to skew the random numbers (or generate new ones using the old function as a randomness source) in a way that strongly favors 'simple' numbers, but will still cover the whole range, I.e. extending up to positive/negative infinity (or ±1e309 for double). This means: numbers up to, say, ten should be most common, integers should be more common than fractions, numbers ending in 0.5 should be the most common fractions, followed by 0.25 and 0.75; then 0.125, and so on. A different description: Fix a base probability x such that probabilities will sum to one and define the probability of a number n as xk where k is the generation in which n is constructed as a surreal number1. That assigns x to 0, x2 to -1 and +1, x3 to -2, -1/2, +1/2 and +2, and so on. This gives a nice description of something close to what I want (it skews a bit too much), but is near-unusable for computing random numbers. The resulting distribution is nowhere continuous (it's fractal!), I'm not sure how to determine the base probability x (I think for infinite precision it would be zero), and computing numbers based on this by iteration is awfully slow (spending near-infinite time to construct large numbers). Does anyone know of a simple approximation that, given a uniformly distributed randomness source, produces random numbers very roughly distributed as described above? I would like to run thousands of randomized tests, quantity/speed is more important than quality. Still, better numbers mean less inputs get rejected. Lua has a JIT, so performance can't be reasonably predicted. Jumps based on randomness will break every prediction, and many calls to math.random() will be slow, too. This means a closed formula will be better than an iterative or recursive one. 1 Wikipedia has an article on surreal numbers, with a nice picture. A surreal number is a pair of two surreal numbers, i.e. x := {n|m}, and its value is the number in the middle of the pair, i.e. (for finite numbers) {n|m} = (n+m)/2 (as rational). If one side of the pair is empty, that's interpreted as increment (or decrement, if right is empty) by one. If both sides are empty, that's zero. Initially, there are no numbers, so the only number one can build is 0 := { | }. In generation two one can build numbers {0| } =: 1 and { |0} =: -1, in three we get {1| } =: 2, {|1} =: -2, {0|1} =: 1/2 and {-1|0} =: -1/2 (plus some more complex representations of known numbers, e.g. {-1|1} ? 0). Note that e.g. 1/3 is never generated by finite numbers because it is an infinite fraction – the same goes for floats, 1/3 is never represented exactly.

  • PhpMyAdmin Hangs On MySQL Error

    - by user75228
    I'm currently running PhpMyAdmin 4.0.10 (the latest version supporting PHP 4.2.X) on my Amazon EC2 connecting to a MySQL database on RDS. Everything works perfectly fine except actions that return a mysql error message. Whether I perform "any" kind of action that will return a mysql error, Phpmyadmin will hang with the yellow "Loading" box forever without displaying anything. For example, if I perform the following command in MySQL CLI : select * from 123; It instantly returns the following error : ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '123' at line 1 which is completely normal because table 123 doesn't exist. However, if I execute the exact same command in the "SQL" box in Phpmyadmin, after I click "Go" it'll display "Loading" and stops there forever. Has anyone ever encountered this kind of issue with Phpmyadmin? Is this a bug or I have something wrong with my config.inc.php? Any help would be much appreciated. I also noticed these error messages in my apache error logs : /opt/apache/bin/httpd: symbol lookup error: /opt/php/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/iconv.so: undefined symbol: libiconv_open /opt/apache/bin/httpd: symbol lookup error: /opt/php/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/iconv.so: undefined symbol: libiconv_open /opt/apache/bin/httpd: symbol lookup error: /opt/php/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/iconv.so: undefined symbol: libiconv_open Below are my config.inc.php settings : <?php /* vim: set expandtab sw=4 ts=4 sts=4: */ /** * phpMyAdmin sample configuration, you can use it as base for * manual configuration. • Need help with Android TableLayout alignment

    - by Ben L.
    I'm trying to build a calculator layout using TableLayout, but the last two rows aren't aligning with the rest of the layout. Is there something wrong with my layout XML? What I'm trying to do would be easier to accomplish in HTML (<td> with colspan or rowspan), so should I try converting this into a WebView? Code is as follows: (Screenshot) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <EditText android:id="@+id/EditText01" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" /> <TableLayout android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:stretchColumns="*"> <TableRow android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1"> <Button android:id="@+id/Button08" android:textSize="16pt" android:text="^" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="wrap_content" /> <Button android:id="@+id/Button09" android:text="÷" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" /> <Button android:id="@+id/Button10" android:text="×" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" /> <Button android:id="@+id/Button11" android:textSize="16pt" android:text="-" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="wrap_content" /> </TableRow> <TableRow android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="2"> <LinearLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_weight="1"> <Button android:id="@+id/Button01" android:text="7" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" /> <Button android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="16pt" android:text="4" android:id="@+id/Button05" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" /> </LinearLayout> <LinearLayout android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent"> <Button android:id="@+id/Button02" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="8" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" /> <Button android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="16pt" android:text="5" android:id="@+id/Button06" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" /> </LinearLayout> <LinearLayout android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent"> <Button android:id="@+id/Button03" android:text="9" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" /> <Button android:textSize="16pt" android:text="6" android:id="@+id/Button07" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" /> </LinearLayout> <Button android:id="@+id/Button04" android:text="+" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1" /> </TableRow> <TableRow android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="2"> <LinearLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_weight="2"> <LinearLayout android:layout_weight="1" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <Button android:id="@+id/Button02" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="1" /> <Button android:textSize="16pt" android:id="@+id/Button06" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="2" /> </LinearLayout> <Button android:id="@+id/Button01" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:text="0" /> </LinearLayout> <LinearLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_weight="1"> <Button android:id="@+id/Button03" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" android:text="3" /> <Button android:textSize="16pt" android:id="@+id/Button07" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" android:text="." /> </LinearLayout> <Button android:id="@+id/Button04" android:textSize="16pt" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1" android:text="=" /> </TableRow> </TableLayout> </LinearLayout>

  • How to Remove Header in LaTex

    Hi, I would like to not show the name of each chapter on the header of its each page. I also like to have nothing in the headers for abstract, acknowledgement, table of content, list of figures and list of tables. But currently I have header on each page, for example: Here is my code when specifying these parts in my tex file \begin{abstract} ... \end{abstract} \begin{acknowledgement} ... \end{acknowledgement} % generate table of contents \tableofcontents % generate list of tables \listoftables % generate list of figures \listoffigures \chapter{Introduction} \label{chp1} %% REFERENCES \appendix \input{appendiximages.tex} \bibliographystyle{plain} %%\bibliographystyle{abbrvnat} \bibliography{thesis} Here is what I believe to be the definition of the commands.     I'm new to Entity Framework and I got stuck in an issue while trying to bind a navigation property (foreign key reference) to a dropdownlist. I have Telerik RadGrid control which gets the data using a EntityDataSource control. Here is the model description: Applications: AppId, AppName, ServerId Servers: ServerId, ServerName The Applicaitons.ServerId is a foreign key reference to Servers.ServerId. The RadGrid lists the applications and allows the user to insert/update/delete an application. I want to show the server names as a dropdownlist in edit mode which I'm not able to. . Here is my aspx code: <telerik:RadGrid ID="gridApplications" runat="server" Skin="Sunset" AllowAutomaticInserts="True" AllowAutomaticDeletes="True" AllowPaging="True" AllowAutomaticUpdates="True" AutoGenerateColumns="False" OnItemCreated="gridApplications_ItemCreated" DataSourceID="applicationsEntityDataSource" Width="50%" OnItemInserted="gridApplications_ItemInserted" OnItemUpdated="gridApplications_ItemUpdated" OnItemDeleted="gridApplications_ItemDeleted" GridLines="None"> <MasterTableView CommandItemDisplay="Top" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="AppId" DataSourceID="applicationsEntityDataSource"> <RowIndicatorColumn> <HeaderStyle Width="20px" /> </RowIndicatorColumn> <ExpandCollapseColumn> <HeaderStyle Width="20px" /> </ExpandCollapseColumn> <Columns> <telerik:GridEditCommandColumn ButtonType="ImageButton" UniqueName="EditCommandColumn" HeaderText="Edit" ItemStyle-Width="10%"> </telerik:GridEditCommandColumn> <telerik:GridButtonColumn CommandName="Delete" Text="Delete" UniqueName="DeleteColumn" ConfirmText="Are you sure you want to delete this application?" ConfirmTitle="Confirm Delete" ConfirmDialogType="Classic" ItemStyle-Width="10%" HeaderText="Delete"> </telerik:GridButtonColumn> <telerik:GridBoundColumn DataField="AppId" UniqueName="AppId" Visible="false" HeaderText="Application Id" ReadOnly="true"> </telerik:GridBoundColumn> <telerik:GridBoundColumn DataField="AppName" UniqueName="AppName" HeaderText="Application Name" MaxLength="30" ItemStyle-Width="40%"> </telerik:GridBoundColumn> <telerik:GridTemplateColumn DataField="ServerId" UniqueName="ServerId" HeaderText="Server Hosted" EditFormColumnIndex="1"> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlServerHosted" runat="server" DataTextField="Servers.ServerName" DataValueField="ServerId" Width="40%"> </asp:DropDownList> </EditItemTemplate> </telerik:GridTemplateColumn> </Columns> <EditFormSettings ColumnNumber="2" CaptionDataField="AppId" InsertCaption="Insert New Application" EditFormType="AutoGenerated"> <EditColumn InsertText="Insert record" EditText="Edit application id #:" EditFormColumnIndex="0" UpdateText="Application updated" UniqueName="InsertCommandColumn1" CancelText="Cancel insert" ButtonType="ImageButton"></EditColumn> <FormTableItemStyle Wrap="false" /> <FormTableStyle GridLines="Horizontal" CellPadding="2" CellSpacing="0" Height="110px" Width="110px" /> <FormTableAlternatingItemStyle Wrap="false" /> <FormStyle Width="100%" BackColor="#EEF2EA" /> <FormTableButtonRowStyle HorizontalAlign="Right" /> </EditFormSettings> </MasterTableView> </telerik:RadGrid> <asp:EntityDataSource ID="applicationsEntityDataSource" runat="server" ConnectionString="name=AnalyticsEntities" EnableDelete="True" EntityTypeFilter="Applications" EnableInsert="True" EnableUpdate="True" EntitySetName="Applications" DefaultContainerName="AnalyticsEntities" Include="Servers"> </asp:EntityDataSource> I tried another approach where I replaced the GridTemplateColumn with the following code <telerik:RadComboBox ID="RadComboBox1" DataSourceID="serversEntityDataSource" DataTextField="ServerName" DataValueField="ServerId" AppendDataBoundItems="true" runat="server" > <Items> <telerik:RadComboBoxItem /> </Items> and using a separate EntityDataSource control as follows: <asp:EntityDataSource ID="serversEntityDataSource" runat="server" ConnectionString="name=AnalyticsEntities" EnableDelete="True" EntityTypeFilter="Servers" EnableInsert="True" EnableUpdate="True" EntitySetName="Servers" DefaultContainerName="AnalyticsEntities"> </asp:EntityDataSource> but, I get the following error. Application cannot be inserted. Reason: Entities in 'AnalyticsEntities.Applications' participate in the 'FK_Servers_Applications' relationship. 0 related 'Servers' were found. 1 'Servers' is expected. My question is, how do you bind the navigation property and load the values in the DropDownList/RadComboBox control?

  • Android custom ListView unable to click on items

    - by MattC
    So I have a custom ListView object. The list items have two textviews stacked on top of each other, plus a horizontal progress bar that I want to remain hidden until I actually do something. To the far right is a checkbox that I only want to display when the user needs to download updates to their database(s). When I disable the checkbox by setting the visibility to Visibility.GONE, I am able to click on the list items. When the checkbox is visible, I am unable to click on anything in the list except the checkboxes. I've done some searching but haven't found anything relevant to my current situation. I found this question but I'm using an overridden ArrayAdapter since I'm using ArrayLists to contain the list of databases internally. Do I just need to get the LinearLayout view and add an onClickListener like Tom did? I'm not sure. Here's the listview row layout XML: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:padding="6dip"> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/UpdateNameText" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:textSize="18sp" android:gravity="center_vertical" /> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:id="@+id/UpdateStatusText" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" /> <ProgressBar android:id="@+id/UpdateProgress" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:indeterminateOnly="false" android:progressDrawable="@android:drawable/progress_horizontal" android:indeterminateDrawable="@android:drawable/progress_indeterminate_horizontal" android:minHeight="10dip" android:maxHeight="10dip" /> </LinearLayout> <CheckBox android:text="" android:id="@+id/UpdateCheckBox" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> </LinearLayout> And here's the class that extends the ListActivity. Obviously it's still in development so forgive the things that are missing or might be left laying around: import java.util.List; import android.app.ListActivity; import android.content.Context; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.LayoutInflater; import android.view.View; import android.view.ViewGroup; import android.widget.ArrayAdapter; import android.widget.Button; import android.widget.CheckBox; import android.widget.ListView; import android.widget.ProgressBar; import android.widget.TextView; import com.xxxx.android.R; import com.xxxx.android.DAO.AccountManager; import com.xxxx.android.model.UpdateItem; public class UpdateActivity extends ListActivity { AccountManager lookupDb; boolean allSelected; UpdateListAdapter list; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); lookupDb = new AccountManager(this); lookupDb.loadUpdates(); setContentView(R.layout.update); allSelected = false; list = new UpdateListAdapter(this, R.layout.update_row, lookupDb.getUpdateItems()); setListAdapter(list);

  • How to read from path in wpf comboboxitem and write into path of binding

    - by Chrik
    Hi, I tried to make up an example to show my problem. My combobox has a list of objects as itemssource. In my example it's a list of Persons. In the combobox i want to show the first name and the last name of the person. But i want to save the last name of the person in the "owner" property of the house-object. My guess was that i bind the SelectedValue to my property and the SelectedValuePath to the name of the property in the comboboxitem. I already googled and tried a view other versions but nothing worked. If i use SelectedItem instead of SelectedValue with the same binding at least the value of the "tostring" function get's written in the property. Sadly that solution doesn't fit in the Rest of my Program because i don't want to override "ToString". The Xaml: <Window x:Class="MultiColumnCombobox.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300" x:Name="window"> <Grid> <ComboBox Height="23" Margin="72,12,86,0" Name="ComboBox1" VerticalAlignment="Top" SelectedValue="{Binding CurrentHouse.Owner, ElementName=window, Mode=TwoWay}" SelectedValuePath="LastName" ItemsSource="{Binding PersonList, ElementName=window, Mode=Default}"> <ComboBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <WrapPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=FirstName}" Padding="10,0,0,0" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=LastName}" Padding="10,0,0,0" /> </WrapPanel> </DataTemplate> </ComboBox.ItemTemplate> </ComboBox> <Button Height="23" Click="PrintButton_Click" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="12,0,0,9" Name="PrintButton" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" Width="75">Print</Button> </Grid> The C# using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Windows; using System; namespace MultiColumnCombobox { public partial class Window1 : Window { private List _PersonList = new List(); public List PersonList { get { return _PersonList; } set { _PersonList = value; } } private House _CurrentHouse = new House { Owner = "Green", Number = "11" }; public House CurrentHouse { get { return _CurrentHouse; } } public Window1() { InitializeComponent(); PersonList.Add(new Person {FirstName = "Peter", LastName = "Smith"}); PersonList.Add(new Person {FirstName = "John", LastName = "Meyer"}); PersonList.Add(new Person {FirstName = "Fritz", LastName = "Green"}); } private void PrintButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show(CurrentHouse.Owner + ":" + CurrentHouse.Number); } } public class House { public string Owner { get; set; } public string Number { get; set; } } public class Person { public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } } } Maybe someone has an idea, Christian

  • Using Image Source with big images in WPF

    - by xyzzer
    I am working on an application that allows users to manipulate multiple images by using ItemsControl. I started running some tests and found that the app has problems displaying some big images - ie. it did not work with the high resolution (21600x10800), 20MB images from http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/BlueMarble/BlueMarble_monthlies.php, though it displays the 6200x6200, 60MB Hubble telescope image from http://zebu.uoregon.edu/hudf/hudf.jpg just fine. The original solution just specified an Image control with a Source property pointing at a file on a disk (through a binding). With the Blue Marble file - the image would just not show up. Now this could be just a bug hidden somewhere deep in the funky MVVM + XAML implementation - the visual tree displayed by Snoop goes like: Window/Border/AdornerDecorator/ContentPresenter/Grid/Canvas/UserControl/Border/ContentPresenter/Grid/Grid/Grid/Grid/Border/Grid/ContentPresenter/UserControl/UserControl/Border/ContentPresenter/Grid/Grid/Grid/Grid/Viewbox/ContainerVisual/UserControl/Border/ContentPresenter/Grid/Grid/ItemsControl/Border/ItemsPresenter/Canvas/ContentPresenter/Grid/Grid/ContentPresenter/Image... Now debug this! WPF can be crazy like that... Anyway, it turned out that if I create a simple WPF application - the images load just fine. I tried finding out the root cause, but I don't want to spend weeks on it. I figured the right thing to do might be to use a converter to scale the images down - this is what I have done: ImagePath = @"F:\Astronomical\world.200402.3x21600x10800.jpg"; TargetWidth = 2800; TargetHeight = 1866; and <Image> <Image.Source> <MultiBinding Converter="{StaticResource imageResizingConverter}"> <MultiBinding.Bindings> <Binding Path="ImagePath"/> <Binding RelativeSource="{RelativeSource Self}" /> <Binding Path="TargetWidth"/> <Binding Path="TargetHeight"/> </MultiBinding.Bindings> </MultiBinding> </Image.Source> </Image> and public class ImageResizingConverter : MarkupExtension, IMultiValueConverter { public Image TargetImage { get; set; } public string SourcePath { get; set; } public int DecodeWidth { get; set; } public int DecodeHeight { get; set; } public object Convert(object[] values, Type targetType, object parameter, CultureInfo culture) { this.SourcePath = values[0].ToString(); this.TargetImage = (Image)values[1]; this.DecodeWidth = (int)values[2]; this.DecodeHeight = (int)values[3]; return DecodeImage(); } private BitmapImage DecodeImage() { BitmapImage bi = new BitmapImage(); bi.BeginInit(); bi.DecodePixelWidth = (int)DecodeWidth; bi.DecodePixelHeight = (int)DecodeHeight; bi.UriSource = new Uri(SourcePath); bi.EndInit(); return bi; } public object[] ConvertBack(object value, Type[] targetTypes, object parameter, CultureInfo culture) { throw new Exception("The method or operation is not implemented."); } public override object ProvideValue(IServiceProvider serviceProvider) { return this; } } Now this works fine, except for one "little" problem. When you just specify a file path in Image.Source - the application actually uses less memory and works faster than if you use BitmapImage.DecodePixelWidth. Plus with Image.Source if you have multiple Image controls that point to the same image - they only use as much memory as if only one image was loaded. With the BitmapImage.DecodePixelWidth solution - each additional Image control uses more memory and each of them uses more than when just specifying Image.Source. Perhaps WPF somehow caches these images in compressed form while if you specify the decoded dimensions - it feels like you get an uncompressed image in memory, plus it takes 6 times the time (perhaps without it the scaling is done on the GPU?), plus it feels like the original high resolution image also gets loaded and takes up space. If I just scale the image down, save it to a temporary file and then use Image.Source to point at the file - it will probably work, but it will be pretty slow and it will require handling cleanup of the temporary file. If I could detect an image that does not get loaded properly - maybe I could only scale it down if I need to, but Image.ImageFailed never gets triggered. Maybe it has something to do with the video memory and this app just using more of it with the deep visual tree, opacity masks etc. Actual question: How can I load big images as quickly as Image.Source option does it, without using more memory for additional copies and additional memory for the scaled down image if I only need them at a certain resolution lower than original? Also, I don't want to keep them in memory if no Image control is using them anymore.

  • Silverlight for Windows Embedded tutorial (step 6)

    - by Valter Minute
    In this tutorial step we will develop a very simple clock application that may be used as a screensaver on our devices and will allow us to discover a new feature of Silverlight for Windows Embedded (transforms) and how to use an “old” feature of Windows CE (timers) inside a Silverlight for Windows Embedded application. Let’s start with some XAML, as usual: <UserControl xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Width="640" Height="480" FontSize="18" x:Name="Clock">   <Canvas x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="#FF000000"> <Grid Height="24" Width="150" Canvas.Left="320" Canvas.Top="234" x:Name="SecondsHand" Background="#FFFF0000"> <TextBlock Text="Seconds" TextWrapping="Wrap" Width="50" HorizontalAlignment="Right" VerticalAlignment="Center" x:Name="SecondsText" Foreground="#FFFFFFFF" TextAlignment="Right" Margin="2,2,2,2"/> </Grid> <Grid Height="24" x:Name="MinutesHand" Width="100" Background="#FF00FF00" Canvas.Left="320" Canvas.Top="234"> <TextBlock HorizontalAlignment="Right" x:Name="MinutesText" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="50" Text="Minutes" TextWrapping="Wrap" Foreground="#FFFFFFFF" TextAlignment="Right" Margin="2,2,2,2"/> </Grid> <Grid Height="24" x:Name="HoursHand" Width="50" Background="#FF0000FF" Canvas.Left="320" Canvas.Top="234"> <TextBlock HorizontalAlignment="Right" x:Name="HoursText" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="50" Text="Hours" TextWrapping="Wrap" Foreground="#FFFFFFFF" TextAlignment="Right" Margin="2,2,2,2"/> </Grid> </Canvas> </UserControl> This XAML file defines three grid panels, one for each hand of our clock (we are implementing an analog clock using one of the most advanced technologies of the digital world… how cool is that?). Inside each hand we put a TextBlock that will be used to display the current hour, minute, second inside the dial (you can’t do that on plain old analog clocks, but it looks nice). As usual we use XAML2CPP to generate the boring part of our code. We declare a class named “Clock” and derives from the TClock template that XAML2CPP has declared for us. class Clock : public TClock<Clock> { ... }; Our WinMain function is more or less the same we used in all the previous samples. It initializes the XAML runtime, create an instance of our class, initialize it and shows it as a dialog: int WINAPI WinMain(HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance, LPTSTR lpCmdLine, int nCmdShow) { if (!XamlRuntimeInitialize()) return -1;   HRESULT retcode;   IXRApplicationPtr app; if (FAILED(retcode=GetXRApplicationInstance(&app))) return -1; Clock clock;   if (FAILED(clock.Init(hInstance,app))) return -1;     UINT exitcode;   if (FAILED(clock.GetVisualHost()->StartDialog(&exitcode))) return -1;   return exitcode; } Silverlight for Windows Embedded provides a lot of features to implement our UI, but it does not provide timers. How we can update our clock if we don’t have a timer feature? We just use plain old Windows timers, as we do in “regular” Windows CE applications! To use a timer in WinCE we should declare an id for it: #define IDT_CLOCKUPDATE 0x12341234 We also need an HWND that will be used to receive WM_TIMER messages. Our Silverlight for Windows Embedded page is “hosted” inside a GWES Window and we can retrieve its handle using the GetContainerHWND function of our VisualHost object. Let’s see how this is implemented inside our Clock class’ Init method: HRESULT Init(HINSTANCE hInstance,IXRApplication* app) { HRESULT retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=TClock<Clock>::Init(hInstance,app))) return retcode;   // create the timer user to update the clock HWND clockhwnd;   if (FAILED(GetVisualHost()->GetContainerHWND(&clockhwnd))) return -1;   timer=SetTimer(clockhwnd,IDT_CLOCKUPDATE,1000,NULL); return 0; } We use SetTimer to create a new timer and GWES will send a WM_TIMER to our window every second, giving us a chance to update our clock. That sounds great… but how could we handle the WM_TIMER message if we didn’t implement a window procedure for our window? We have to move a step back and look how a visual host is created. This code is generated by XAML2CPP and is inside xaml2cppbase.h: virtual HRESULT CreateHost(HINSTANCE hInstance,IXRApplication* app) { HRESULT retcode; XRWindowCreateParams wp;   ZeroMemory(&wp, sizeof(XRWindowCreateParams)); InitWindowParms(&wp);   XRXamlSource xamlsrc;   SetXAMLSource(hInstance,&xamlsrc); if (FAILED(retcode=app->CreateHostFromXaml(&xamlsrc, &wp, &vhost))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=vhost->GetRootElement(&root))) return retcode; return S_OK; } As you can see the CreateHostFromXaml function of IXRApplication accepts a structure named XRWindowCreateParams that control how the “plain old” GWES Window is created by the runtime. This structure is initialized inside the InitWindowParm method: // Initializes Windows parameters, can be overridden in the user class to change its appearance virtual void InitWindowParms(XRWindowCreateParams* wp) { wp->Style = WS_OVERLAPPED; wp->pTitle = windowtitle; wp->Left = 0; wp->Top = 0; } This method set up the window style, title and position. But the XRWindowCreateParams contains also other fields and, since the function is declared as virtual, we could initialize them inside our version of InitWindowParms: // add hook procedure to the standard windows creation parms virtual void InitWindowParms(XRWindowCreateParams* wp) { TClock<Clock>::InitWindowParms(wp);   wp->pHookProc=StaticHostHookProc; wp->pvUserParam=this; } This method calls the base class implementation (useful to not having to re-write some code, did I told you that I’m quite lazy?) and then initializes the pHookProc and pvUserParam members of the XRWindowsCreateParams structure. Those members will allow us to install a “hook” procedure that will be called each time the GWES window “hosting” our Silverlight for Windows Embedded UI receives a message. We can declare a hook procedure inside our Clock class: // static hook procedure static BOOL CALLBACK StaticHostHookProc(VOID* pv,HWND hwnd,UINT Msg,WPARAM wParam,LPARAM lParam,LRESULT* pRetVal) { ... } You should notice two things here. First that the function is declared as static. This is required because a non-static function has a “hidden” parameters, that is the “this” pointer of our object. Having an extra parameter is not allowed for the type defined for the pHookProc member of the XRWindowsCreateParams struct and so we should implement our hook procedure as static. But in a static procedure we will not have a this pointer. How could we access the data member of our class? Here’s the second thing to notice. We initialized also the pvUserParam of the XRWindowsCreateParams struct. We set it to our this pointer. This value will be passed as the first parameter of the hook procedure. In this way we can retrieve our this pointer and use it to call a non-static version of our hook procedure: // static hook procedure static BOOL CALLBACK StaticHostHookProc(VOID* pv,HWND hwnd,UINT Msg,WPARAM wParam,LPARAM lParam,LRESULT* pRetVal) { return ((Clock*)pv)->HostHookProc(hwnd,Msg,wParam,lParam,pRetVal); } Inside our non-static hook procedure we will have access to our this pointer and we will be able to update our clock: // hook procedure (handles timers) BOOL HostHookProc(HWND hwnd,UINT Msg,WPARAM wParam,LPARAM lParam,LRESULT* pRetVal) { switch (Msg) { case WM_TIMER: if (wParam==IDT_CLOCKUPDATE) UpdateClock(); *pRetVal=0; return TRUE; } return FALSE; } The UpdateClock member function will update the text inside our TextBlocks and rotate the hands to reflect current time: // udates Hands positions and labels HRESULT UpdateClock() { SYSTEMTIME time; HRESULT retcode;   GetLocalTime(&time);   //updates the text fields TCHAR timebuffer[32];   _itow(time.wSecond,timebuffer,10);   SecondsText->SetText(timebuffer);   _itow(time.wMinute,timebuffer,10);   MinutesText->SetText(timebuffer);   _itow(time.wHour,timebuffer,10);   HoursText->SetText(timebuffer);   if (FAILED(retcode=RotateHand(((float)time.wSecond)*6-90,SecondsHand))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=RotateHand(((float)time.wMinute)*6-90,MinutesHand))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=RotateHand(((float)(time.wHour%12))*30-90,HoursHand))) return retcode;   return S_OK; } The function retrieves current time, convert hours, minutes and seconds to strings and display those strings inside the three TextBlocks that we put inside our clock hands. Then it rotates the hands to position them at the right angle (angles are in degrees and we have to subtract 90 degrees because 0 degrees means horizontal on Silverlight for Windows Embedded and usually a clock 0 is in the top position of the dial. The code of the RotateHand function uses transforms to rotate our clock hands on the screen: // rotates a Hand HRESULT RotateHand(float angle,IXRFrameworkElement* Hand) { HRESULT retcode; IXRRotateTransformPtr rotatetransform; IXRApplicationPtr app;   if (FAILED(retcode=GetXRApplicationInstance(&app))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=app->CreateObject(IID_IXRRotateTransform,&rotatetransform))) return retcode;     if (FAILED(retcode=rotatetransform->SetAngle(angle))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=rotatetransform->SetCenterX(0.0))) return retcode;   float height;   if (FAILED(retcode==Hand->GetActualHeight(&height))) return retcode;   if (FAILED(retcode=rotatetransform->SetCenterY(height/2))) return retcode; if (FAILED(retcode=Hand->SetRenderTransform(rotatetransform))) return retcode;   return S_OK; } It creates a IXRotateTransform object, set its rotation angle and origin (the default origin is at the top-left corner of our Grid panel, we move it in the vertical center to keep the hand rotating around a single point in a more “clock like” way. Then we can apply the transform to our UI object using SetRenderTransform. Every UI element (derived from IXRFrameworkElement) can be rotated! And using different subclasses of IXRTransform also moved, scaled, skewed and distorted in many ways. You can also concatenate multiple transforms and apply them at once suing a IXRTransformGroup object. The XAML engine uses vector graphics and object will not look “pixelated” when they are rotated or scaled. As usual you can download the code here: http://cid-9b7b0aefe3514dc5.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Clock.zip If you read up to (down to?) this point you seem to be interested in Silverlight for Windows Embedded. • In WPF, how do I get a command in a Control Template to bind to a property in a parent?

    - by Keith
    I am relatively new to WPF and sometimes it makes my head explode. However, I do like the power behind it, especially when used with the MVVM model. I have a control template that contains a button. I use that control template inside of a custom control. I want to add a property on the custom control that will bind to the command property of the button inside the control template. Basically, it is a combo box with a button to the right of it to allow a user to pop up a search dialog. Since this control could appear on a usercontrol multiple times, I need to be able to potentially bind each control to a different command (Searh products, search customers, etc). However, I have been unable to figure out how to do this Here is some sample XAML <Style TargetType="{x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}"> <Setter Property="LookupTemplate" Value="{StaticResource LookupTemplate}" /> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}"> <Border BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding Border.BorderThickness}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Control.Padding}" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding Border.BorderBrush}" Background="{TemplateBinding Panel.Background}" SnapsToDevicePixels="True" Focusable="False"> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" MinWidth="0" SharedSizeGroup="{Binding LabelShareSizeGroupName, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:BaseFieldControl}}}" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="1*" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" SharedSizeGroup="{Binding WidgetsShareSizeGroupName, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:BaseFieldControl}}}" /> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <!-- Customized Value Part --> <ComboBox x:Name="PART_Value" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4,2,0,1" SelectedValue="{Binding Path=SelectionField.Value, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" IsEnabled="{Binding Field.IsNotReadOnly, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" Visibility="{Binding Field.IsInEditMode, Converter={StaticResource TrueToVisible}, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" FontFamily="{StaticResource FontFamily_Default}" FontSize="11px"> <ComboBox.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <VirtualizingStackPanel IsVirtualizing="True" VirtualizationMode="Recycling"/> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ComboBox.ItemsPanel> </ComboBox> <StackPanel Grid.Column="2" Orientation="Horizontal" Name="PART_Extra" Focusable="False"> <ContentControl Name="PART_LookupContent" Template="{Binding LookupTemplate, RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type m:SelectionFieldControl}}}" Focusable="False"/> </StackPanel> </Grid> </Border> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> I thought I could get it to work by doing something like this <Button Command="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type SelectionFieldControl}}, Path=ShowSearchCommand}" Margin="2" /> but it does not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    On Monday I had the opportunity to present the MIX 2010 Day 1 Keynote in Las Vegas (you can watch a video of it here).  In the keynote I announced the release of the Silverlight 4 Release Candidate (we’ll ship the final release of it next month) and the VS 2010 RC tools for Silverlight 4.  I also had the chance to talk for the first time about how Silverlight and XNA can now be used to build Windows Phone 7 applications. During my talk I did two quick Windows Phone 7 coding demos using Silverlight – a quick “Hello World” application and a “Twitter” data-snacking application.  Both applications were easy to build and only took a few minutes to create on stage.  Below are the steps you can follow yourself to build them on your own machines as well. [Note: In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Building a “Hello World” Windows Phone 7 Application First make sure you’ve installed the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP – this includes the Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone development tool (which will be free forever and is the only thing you need to develop and build Windows Phone 7 applications) as well as an add-on to the VS 2010 RC that enables phone development within the full VS 2010 as well. After you’ve downloaded and installed the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP, launch the Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone that it installs or launch the VS 2010 RC (if you have it already installed), and then choose “File”->”New Project.”  Here, you’ll find the usual list of project template types along with a new category: “Silverlight for Windows Phone”. The first CTP offers two application project templates. The first is the “Windows Phone Application” template - this is what we’ll use for this example. The second is the “Windows Phone List Application” template - which provides the basic layout for a master-details phone application: After creating a new project, you’ll get a view of the design surface and markup. Notice that the design surface shows the phone UI, letting you easily see how your application will look while you develop. For those familiar with Visual Studio, you’ll also find the familiar ToolBox, Solution Explorer and Properties pane. For our HelloWorld application, we’ll start out by adding a TextBox and a Button from the Toolbox. Notice that you get the same design experience as you do for Silverlight on the web or desktop. You can easily resize, position and align your controls on the design surface. Changing properties is easy with the Properties pane. We’ll change the name of the TextBox that we added to username and change the page title text to “Hello world.” We’ll then write some code by double-clicking on the button and create an event handler in the code-behind file (MainPage.xaml.cs). We’ll start out by changing the title text of the application. The project template included this title as a TextBlock with the name textBlockListTitle (note that the current name incorrectly includes the word “list”; that will be fixed for the final release.)  As we write code against it we get intellisense showing the members available.  Below we’ll set the Text property of the title TextBlock to “Hello “ + the Text property of the TextBox username: We now have all the code necessary for a Hello World application.  We have two choices when it comes to deploying and running the application. We can either deploy to an actual device itself or use the built-in phone emulator: Because the phone emulator is actually the phone operating system running in a virtual machine, we’ll get the same experience developing in the emulator as on the device. For this sample, we’ll just press F5 to start the application with debugging using the emulator.  Once the phone operating system loads, the emulator will run the new “Hello world” application exactly as it would on the device: Notice that we can change several settings of the emulator experience with the emulator toolbar – which is a floating toolbar on the top right.  This includes the ability to re-size/zoom the emulator and two rotate buttons.  Zoom lets us zoom into even the smallest detail of the application: The orientation buttons allow us easily see what the application looks like in landscape mode (orientation change support is just built into the default template): Note that the emulator can be reused across F5 debug sessions - that means that we don’t have to start the emulator for every deployment. We’ve added a dialog that will help you from accidentally shutting down the emulator if you want to reuse it.  Launching an application on an already running emulator should only take ~3 seconds to deploy and run. Within our Hello World application we’ll click the “username” textbox to give it focus.  This will cause the software input panel (SIP) to open up automatically.  We can either type a message or – since we are using the emulator – just type in text.  Note that the emulator works with Windows 7 multi-touch so, if you have a touchscreen, you can see how interaction will feel on a device just by pressing the screen. We’ll enter “MIX 10” in the textbox and then click the button – this will cause the title to update to be “Hello MIX 10”: We provide the same Visual Studio experience when developing for the phone as other .NET applications. This means that we can set a breakpoint within the button event handler, press the button again and have it break within the debugger: Building a “Twitter” Windows Phone 7 Application using Silverlight Rather than just stop with “Hello World” let’s keep going and evolve it to be a basic Twitter client application. We’ll return to the design surface and add a ListBox, using the snaplines within the designer to fit it to the device screen and make the best use of phone screen real estate.  We’ll also rename the Button “Lookup”: We’ll then return to the Button event handler in Main.xaml.cs, and remove the original “Hello World” line of code and take advantage of the WebClient networking class to asynchronously download a Twitter feed. This takes three lines of code in total: (1) declaring and creating the WebClient, (2) attaching an event handler and then (3) calling the asynchronous DownloadStringAsync method. In the DownloadStringAsync call, we’ll pass a Twitter Uri plus a query string which pulls the text from the “username” TextBox. This feed will pull down the respective user’s most frequent posts in an XML format. When the call completes, the DownloadStringCompleted event is fired and our generated event handler twitter_DownloadStringCompleted will be called: The result returned from the Twitter call will come back in an XML based format.  To parse this we’ll use LINQ to XML. LINQ to XML lets us create simple queries for accessing data in an xml feed. To use this library, we’ll first need to add a reference to the assembly (right click on the References folder in the solution explorer and choose “Add Reference): We’ll then add a “using System.Xml.Linq” namespace reference at the top of the code-behind file at the top of Main.xaml.cs file: We’ll then add a simple helper class called TwitterItem to our project. TwitterItem has three string members – UserName, Message and ImageSource: We’ll then implement the twitter_DownloadStringCompleted event handler and use LINQ to XML to parse the returned XML string from Twitter.  What the query is doing is pulling out the three key pieces of information for each Twitter post from the username we passed as the query string. These are the ImageSource for their profile image, the Message of their tweet and their UserName. For each Tweet in the XML, we are creating a new TwitterItem in the IEnumerable<XElement> returned by the Linq query.  We then assign the generated TwitterItem sequence to the ListBox’s ItemsSource property: We’ll then do one more step to complete the application. In the Main.xaml file, we’ll add an ItemTemplate to the ListBox. For the demo, I used a simple template that uses databinding to show the user’s profile image, their tweet and their username. <ListBox Height="521" HorizonalAlignment="Left" Margin="0,131,0,0" Name="listBox1" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="476"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Height="132"> <Image Source="{Binding ImageSource}" Height="73" Width="73" VerticalAlignment="Top" Margin="0,10,8,0"/> <StackPanel Width="370"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding UserName}" Foreground="#FFC8AB14" FontSize="28" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Message}" TextWrapping="Wrap" FontSize="24" /> </StackPanel> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> Now, pressing F5 again, we are able to reuse the emulator and re-run the application. Once the application has launched, we can type in a Twitter username and press the  Button to see the results. Try my Twitter user name (scottgu) and you’ll get back a result of TwitterItems in the Listbox: Try using the mouse (or if you have a touchscreen device your finger) to scroll the items in the Listbox – you should find that they move very fast within the emulator.  This is because the emulator is hardware accelerated – and so gives you the same fast performance that you get on the actual phone hardware. Summary Silverlight and the VS 2010 Tools for Windows Phone (and the corresponding Expression Blend Tools for Windows Phone) make building Windows Phone applications both really easy and fun.  At MIX this week a number of great partners (including Netflix, FourSquare, Seesmic, Shazaam, Major League Soccer, Graphic.ly, Associated Press, Jackson Fish and more) showed off some killer application prototypes they’ve built over the last few weeks.  You can watch my full day 1 keynote to see them in action. I think they start to show some of the promise and potential of using Silverlight with Windows Phone 7.  I’ll be doing more blog posts in the weeks and months ahead that cover that more. Hope this helps, Scott
