  • Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

    - by cpjolicoeur
I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

  • java best way to transfer images

    - by d.raev
I have a application that reads a PDF, transform the content to collection of TIF files, and send them to Glass Fish Server for saving. Usually there are 1-5 pages and it works nice, but when I got a input file with 100+ pages... it throws error on the transfer. Java heap space at java.util.Arrays.copyOf(Arrays.java:2786) at java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream.write(ByteArrayOutputStream.java:94) Putting more resources is not a good option in my case, so I m looking for a way to optimize it somehow. I store the data in: HashMap<TifProfile, List<byte[]> Is there a better way to store or send them ? EDIT I did some tests and the final collections for PDF with 80 pages has size over 280mb (240 tiffs with different settings inside)

I am using Java Reflection to expose methods in custom eclipse tool. I am writing method getReturnType which accepts java.lang.reflect.Method as input and returns object of Class private static Class<?> getReturnType(Method method) { Type type = ((ParameterizedType)method.getGenericReturnType()).getRawType(); return getClass(type); } This code compiles well but at runtime i get the below exception while casting Type to ParameterizedType. java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Class cannot be cast to java.lang.reflect.ParameterizedType Please suggest. Thanks!

  • Creating a Java platform game as easily as possible

    - by directx
I need to create a Java-based platformer game for a high school project (not computer science related), and I want to spend as little time on technical stuff as possible. I'm already experienced in Java, and I already have most of the gameplay, graphics, etc. All I need to do is code it. I've looked and I'm considering one of two options that do not involving coding a game from scratch: Copy an existing Java platformer (best option, but I can't find an open source Java platformer) Use a Java game engine to avoid coding from scratch. I've looked at JGame but I'm not sure if it's the best bet for a platformer.

  • Where do Java Applets live?

    - by Wendy Peters
I'm trying to figure out where java Applets that I run from the browser get downloaded to. I'm using Firefox 3.0 on Windows XP with Java 1.6 if that makes any difference. From the Java Control Panel on the toolbar, I can access "Temporary Internet Files - Settings" to find the Java cache. From there I can show the resources and see a file called "dws2010066.dat". Does this resource correspond to a file on disk? I did a search in the Java cache (and my whole computer) but came up empty handed.

  • no ocijdbc10 in java.library.path

    - by B.Z.B
Hey all, So I've been plagued by this issue, whenever I try to run my app in eclipse, I get this error. 2011-02-23 09:55:08,388 ERROR (com.xxxxx.services.factory.ServiceInvokerLocal:21) - java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no ocijdbc10 in java.library.path I've tried following the steps I found here with no luck. I've tried this on a XP VM as well as windows 7 (although in win 7 I get a different error, below) java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no ocijdbc9 in java.library.path I've made sure my oracle client was ok (by running TOAD) and I also re-added the classes12.jar / ojdbc14.jars to my WEB-INF/lib folder taken directly from my %ORACLE_HOME% folder (also re-added them to the lib path). I've also tried just adding the ojdbc14.jar without the classes12.jar. Any suggestions appreciated. In the XP VM I have my PATH variable set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_24\bin;C:\ORACLE\product\10.2.0.1\BIN. I'm using Tomcat server 5.0

  • Why this java application print "true"?

    - by user292084
    This is my first Class Hello.java public class Hello { String name = ""; } This is my second Class Test1.java public class Test1 { public static void main(String[] args) { Hello h = new Hello(); Test1 t = new Test1(); t.build(h); System.out.println((h.name)); } void build(Hello h){ h.name = "me"; } } When I run Test1.java, it prints "me". I think I understand, because of "reference transfer". This is my third Class Test2.java public class Test2 { public static void main(String[] args) { Hello h = null; Test2 t = new Test2(); t.build(h); System.out.println(((h == null))); } void build(Hello h){ h = new Hello(); } } When I run Test2.java, it prints "true", why ? Is it "reference transfer" no longer? I am confused.

  • How to load an image in matlab from java

    - by Ian
Basically I am trying to create a little program that will allow me to make calls in matlab from a jave GUI It's mainly going to be used for image manipulation and deblurring but I am struggling to find a way that will effectively give me full matlab control from the java end I am hoping to have it work like so: { //create matlab execution call String loadImage = " image1 = imread ('imageOnComputer.jpg'); "; //send instruction to matlab and save the path to it so java can //use the newly created variable resultingVariablePath = java.sendInstructionToMatlab(loadImage); //display on the screen java.displayImage(resultingVariablePath); } Basically I am just trying to find out if there is a plugin for matlab (or some java package) that will grant you (pretty much) full control over matlab.

  • What are the new features in Java 7

    - by T.K.
What is the most official Java 7 feature list? I find very little useful information regarding this on the official JDK 7 site. Apart from that I can only find blogs with people summarizing "some" of the new features. However, some of these blog entries are old and some of them claim that these features "may or may not" be included in Java 7. Can anyone provide a list of features that will definitely be included in Java 7? I would also very much like to know the estimated release date. Will it be backwards compatible with my existing Java EE 6 stuff. That is, will I be able to switch seamlessly using EJBs, JPA2, Glassfish 3 and so on. The feature I am mostly interested in is Closures, so I'll happily switch to Java 7 as soon as a stable release comes out. Thanks!

  • Java cannot find symbol enum

    - by JDelage
Hi, I'm modeling a chess game on Java, and I'm having some problem. Here's what the code looks like (the relevant parts): Enum class Couleur.java: public enum Couleur {BLANC, NOIR} Piece.java: public abstract class Piece { (...) public Piece(Couleur couleurParam){ this.couleurPiece = couleurParam; } (...) } And finally Tour.java: public class Tour extends Piece { (...) public Tour(Couleur couleurParam){ super(couleurParam); } (...) } All the .java files are in the same folder. Yet at compile I get a "cannot find symbol symbol : variable NOIR location: class Plateau" (Plateau is the class that instantiates Tour.) Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong here? Many thanks, JDelage

  • tool to generate C++ wrapper over java class

    - by Vardhan Varma
From what I understand, SWIG is to wrap C++/C to make it appear in Java, and javah is to implement certain java functions in C++ ( aka native functions ). Is there a tool which can create a C++ wrapper over a java class, so that the caller. of this c++ wrapper doesn't have to worry about java, for example Input Java is class hw { public void hi() { System.out.println("Hello World"); } } Tools outputs hw.hh ( and some. c++ files ), which can be used as: hw *h = new hw(/*JEnv */ env); h-hi(); Is there a tool available which can do this ?

  • How can I disable Java garbage collector ?

    - by Nelson
Hi, we have a PHP webapp that calls a java binary to produce a pdf report (with jasperreport), the java binary outpus pdf to standart output and exits, the php then send the pdf to browser. This java command lasts about 3 to 6 seconds, I think when it lasts 6 second it's because the GC kicks in, so I would like to disable it because anyway when the command exits all memory is returned.. I would like to know how to disable it for Java 1.4.2 and for Java 1.6.0 because we are currently testing both JVM to see which performs faster.. Thanks

I have seen there are some books on JVM like Inside the Java 2 Virtual Machine also some free books on official web site. Also I found concurrent programming in Java. But may be you can suggest any others. Thank you

  • java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError when the file is there

    - by tsOverflow
I've tried to look around for postings that might help me, cant find any. I am deploying an ear to JBoss4 server, and I started having this problem since I added a new project. this new project is defined as Java project in eclipse, and the EAR project has an EJB project that has the new Java project as one of the projects as its dependent upon - if deployed on JBoss locally through eclipse, there's no problem and everything goes smoothly But when being deployed to JBoss in test environment (outside eclipse), kept getting java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError on one of the classes that are defined in the new Java project. I looked inside the EAR file to get to the jar (EJB project), and then inside the jar, I can see the directory structure and all the class files from the new Java project - ie. The class that it complains about is right there inside the EAR-JAR and matching the exact structure that it's looking for. I am at lost to what else I can look at. Any pointers are greatly appreciated! Thanks

  • Java import from other directory

    - by heldopslippers
Hi People! I am building a Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) with Java. I won't get into details But I have to build multiple servers who make use of the same classes. I have the following directory structure: /server1 -Main.java /server2 -Main.java /com -Database.java I want to import from the Main.java class for example the Database.class. But of course the following statements won't work: import com.Database; I am working with the javac compiler in the command line (so not eclipse stuff or whatever. just TextMate and the command line). And I found a (pretty stupid) solution by creating a symbolic link in the servers to the com directory. But that is not really an ideal solution. Does anybody have a better one?? THANXS in advanced!! :D

  • Any good class diagram editors out there for Java (not UML)

    - by user85116
I'm looking for an editor that can create class diagrams, similar to the typical UML class diagram, but specifically for java (so using java terminology; instead of terms like "generalization, realization etc", we use the java equivalents "interface, abstract class, extends etc"). I've looked into UML several times, but each time I've been turned off by the shear amount of "stuff" that comes with UML. I just want to be able to model my java classes quickly and intuitively, without getting bogged down by all the cruft that comes with UML. Preferably, it would come with a source reader that can keep the diagram up to date, and with a few nice features like "show only public methods in this class" etc. As well, it would automatically "know" about the classes in the standard java library, and possibly even be able to read classes from jars. Performance is also a big thing for me, I don't like having to wait 2 seconds for a popup menu to appear, or watch the diagram jerk crazily while resizing an element in the model. What do you think, am I asking too much?

  • Maven + Java package declaration

    - by Vasan
We have a Maven project (packaged as JAR) with Java files. A new Java source file was recently added to this project. The path in which the Java file was added, does not match its package declaration. As expected, Eclipse shows an error in the class for the mismatch. However, Maven builds the project just fine. In the generated JAR file, the .class file is present in the path indicated by the package declaration. We tried moving the Java source file to other incorrect folders (i.e. different from the package declaration), but every time Maven builds the project fine. So, does Maven ignore the actual directory in which the .java file is present? Does it only consider package declaration?

  • Exception in Google App Engine (Java) while trying to create Memcache Object

    - by Shreeni
I am coming back to an old Google App Engine project on which I saw a bug. During this lag, I have been upgrading my AppEngine SDK and is now set at 1.3. When I try to run the same project again, I see the following exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.google.apphosting.api.ApiProxy$Environment.getDefaultNamespace()Ljava/lang/String; at com.google.appengine.api.NamespaceManager.get(NamespaceManager.java:56) at com.google.appengine.api.memcache.MemcacheServiceImpl.setNamespace(MemcacheServiceImpl.java:181) at com.google.appengine.api.memcache.MemcacheServiceImpl.(MemcacheServiceImpl.java:145) at com.google.appengine.api.memcache.MemcacheServiceFactory.getMemcacheService(MemcacheServiceFactory.java:25) The line causing the problem is: CacheManager.getInstance().getCacheFactory().createCache(Collections.emptyMap()); (It is the same line as suggested by the AppEngine documentation to create a memcache object. It used to work fine previously. ) Any suggestions on how to fix it?

  • Throwing exception from a property when my object state is invalid

    - by Rumi P.
Microsoft guidelines say: "Avoid throwing exceptions from property getters", and I normally follow that. But my application uses Linq2SQL, and there is the case where my object can be in invalid state because somebody or something wrote nonsense into the database. Consider this toy example: [Table(Name="Rectangle")] public class Rectangle { [Column(Name="ID", IsPrimaryKey = true, IsDbGenerated = true)] public int ID {get; set;} [Column(Name="firstSide")] public double firstSide {get; set;} [Column(Name="secondSide")] public double secondSide {get; set;} public double sideRatio { get { return firstSide/secondSide; } } } Here, I could write code which ensures that my application never writes a Rectangle with a zero-length side into the database. But no matter how bulletproof I make my own code, somebody could open the database with a different application and create an invalid Rectangle, especially one with a 0 for secondSide. (For this example, please forget that it is possible to design the database in a way such that writing a side length of zero into the rectangle table is impossible; my domain model is very complex and there are constraints on model state which cannot be expressed in a relational database). So, the solution I am gravitating to is to change the getter to: get { if(firstSide > 0 && secondSide > 0) return firstSide/secondSide; else throw new System.InvalidOperationException("All rectangle sides should have a positive length"); } The reasoning behind not throwing exceptions from properties is that programmers should be able to use them without having to make precautions about catching and handling them them. But in this case, I think that it is OK to continue to use this property without such precautions: if the exception is thrown because my application wrote a non-zero rectangle side into the database, then this is a serious bug. It cannot and shouldn't be handled in the application, but there should be code which prevents it. It is good that the exception is visibly thrown, because that way the bug is caught. if the exception is thrown because a different application changed the data in the database, then handling it is outside of the scope of my application. So I can't do anything about it if I catch it. Is this a good enough reasoning to get over the "avoid" part of the guideline and throw the exception? Or should I turn it into a method after all? Note that in the real code, the properties which can have an invalid state feel less like the result of a calculation, so they are "natural" properties, not methods.

  • Data not synchornizing java sockets

    - by Droid_Interceptor
I am writing a auction server and client and using a class called BidHandler to deal with the bids another class AuctionItem to deal with the items for auction. The main problem I am having is little synchroization problem. Screen output of client server as can see from the image at 1st it takes the new bid and changes the value of the time to it, but when one the user enters 1.0 the item seems to be changed to that. But later on when the bid changes again to 15.0 it seems to stay at that price. Is there any reason for that. I have included my code below. Sorry if didnt explain this well. This is the auction client import java.io.*; import java.net.*; public class AuctionClient { private AuctionGui gui; private Socket socket; private DataInputStream dataIn; private DataOutputStream dataOut; //Auction Client constructor String name used as identifier for each client to allow server to pick the winning bidder public AuctionClient(String name,String server, int port) { gui = new AuctionGui("Bidomatic 5000"); gui.input.addKeyListener (new EnterListener(this, gui)); gui.addWindowListener(new ExitListener(this)); try { socket = new Socket(server, port); dataIn = new DataInputStream(socket.getInputStream()); dataOut = new DataOutputStream(socket.getOutputStream()); dataOut.writeUTF(name); while (true) { gui.output.append("\n"+dataIn.readUTF()); } } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public void sentBid(String bid) { try { dataOut.writeUTF(bid); } catch(IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public void disconnect() { try { socket.close(); } catch(IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public static void main (String args[]) throws IOException { if(args.length!=3) { throw new RuntimeException ("Syntax: java AuctionClient <name> <serverhost> <port>"); } int port = Integer.parseInt(args[2]); AuctionClient a = new AuctionClient(args[0],args[1],port); } } The Auction Server import java.io.*; import java.net.*; import java.util.*; public class AuctionServer { public AuctionServer(int port) throws IOException { ServerSocket server = new ServerSocket(port); while(true) { Socket client = server.accept(); DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(client.getInputStream()); String name = in.readUTF(); System.out.println("New client "+name+" from " +client.getInetAddress()); BidHandler b = new BidHandler (name, client); b.start(); } } public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException { if(args.length != 1) throw new RuntimeException("Syntax: java AuctionServer <port>"); new AuctionServer(Integer.parseInt(args[0])); } } The BidHandler import java.net.*; import java.io.*; import java.util.*; import java.lang.Float; public class BidHandler extends Thread { Socket socket; DataInputStream in; DataOutputStream out; String name; float currentBid = 0.0f; AuctionItem paper = new AuctionItem(" News Paper ", " Free newspaper from 1990 ", 1.0f, false); protected static Vector handlers = new Vector(); public BidHandler(String name, Socket socket) throws IOException { this.name = name; this.socket = socket; in = new DataInputStream (new BufferedInputStream (socket.getInputStream())); out = new DataOutputStream(new BufferedOutputStream(socket.getOutputStream())); } public synchronized void run() { try { broadcast("New bidder has entered the room"); handlers.addElement(this); while(true) { broadcast(paper.getName() + paper.getDescription()+" for sale at: " +paper.getPrice()); while(paper.getStatus() == false) { String message = in.readUTF(); currentBid = Float.parseFloat(message); broadcast("Bidder entered " +currentBid); if(currentBid > paper.getPrice()) { paper.setPrice(currentBid); broadcast("New Higgest Bid is "+paper.getPrice()); } else if(currentBid < paper.getPrice()) { broadcast("Higgest Bid is "+paper.getPrice()); } else if(currentBid == paper.getPrice()) { broadcast("Higgest Bid is "+paper.getPrice()); } } } } catch(IOException ex) { System.out.println("-- Connection to user lost."); } finally { handlers.removeElement(this); broadcast(name+" left"); try { socket.close(); } catch(IOException ex) { System.out.println("-- Socket to user already closed ?"); } } } protected static void broadcast (String message) { synchronized(handlers) { Enumeration e = handlers.elements(); while(e.hasMoreElements()) { BidHandler handler = (BidHandler) e.nextElement(); try { handler.out.writeUTF(message); handler.out.flush(); } catch(IOException ex) { handler = null; } } } } } The AuctionItem Class class AuctionItem { String itemName; String itemDescription; float itemPrice; boolean itemStatus; //Create a new auction item with name, description, price and status public AuctionItem(String name, String description, float price, boolean status) { itemName = name; itemDescription = description; itemPrice = price; itemStatus = status; } //return the price of the item. public synchronized float getPrice() { return itemPrice; } //Set the price of the item. public synchronized void setPrice(float newPrice) { itemPrice = newPrice; } //Get the status of the item public synchronized boolean getStatus() { return itemStatus; } //Set the status of the item public synchronized void setStatus(boolean newStatus) { itemStatus = newStatus; } //Get the name of the item public String getName() { return itemName; } //Get the description of the item public String getDescription() { return itemDescription; } } There is also simple GUI to go with this that seems to be working fine. If anyone wants it will include the GUI code.
