    I'm trying to build a simple interpreted language for learning purposes. I've read countless theory and tutorials on ANTLR and JavaCC, but I can't figure out how to actually make it do something useful. I learn best by "taking something apart and putting it back together again", so, are there any working examples of simple languages implemented with the help of tools such as ANTLR, or similar? Something like the following might be nice: x = 1 if x == 1 print "true"

    C++ is my first language, and as such I'm used to whitespace being ignored. However, I've been toying around with Python, and I don't find it too hard to get used to the whitespace rules. It seems, however, that a lot of programmers on the Internet can't get past the whitespace rules. From what I've seen, peoples' C++ programs tend to be formatted very consistently with respect to whitespace (or else it's pretty hard to read), so why do some people have such a problem with whitespace-based languages like Python?

  • What's the best way to mix Ruby and other languages? (Especially C++)

    Hi, I'm learning Ruby, and I'm starting to play with building extensions in C. I have Programming Ruby The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide and so I can follow that for the basic nuts and bolts. What I was wondering is if there already existed some nifty frameworks/whatever to help interoperability between Ruby and other languages, with C++ being the most important for me. I've tried googling, but the results focus on language comparisons, rather than language interoperability. TIA, Andy

    When constructing a website, say a Q&A site or a just a forum site for a community, is just knowing HTML,CSS,PHP, MySQL, and javascript enough to make the site dynamic? I am saying this because when I talked with my teacher, he said that major sites use many languages combined. And he said that a site shouldn't be designed only in PHP. So is it possible to create a good website, not e-commerce, with only html,css, and php?

  • Hadoop is not able to find JAVA_HOME properly

    I am trying to run hadoop my Ubuntu OS. I have set JAVA_HOME variable in ~/.bashrc file to /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/ but when I run hadoop namenode -format command it fails with following errors : shekhar@ubuntu:/usr$ hadoop namenode -format Warning: $HADOOP_HOME is deprecated. /host/Shekhar/Softwares/hadoop-1.0.0/bin/hadoop: line 321: /usr/jdk1.7.0_01/bin/java: No such file or directory /host/Shekhar/Softwares/hadoop-1.0.0/bin/hadoop: line 387: /usr/jdk1.7.0_01/bin/java: No such file or directory hadoop tries to locate java command at /usr/jdk1.7.0_01/bin/ path. Clearly somehow it missed /lib/jvm folder. I am not able to understand why and how this is happening. my echo $PATH command gives following output : shekhar@ubuntu:/usr$ echo $PATH /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/bin:/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/bin:/host/Shekhar/Softwares/hadoop-1.0.0/bin If I run which java command I get following output : shekhar@ubuntu:/usr$ which java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/bin/java and echo $JAVA_HOME returns following output : shekhar@ubuntu:/usr$ echo $JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01 I would like to know why hadoop is taking JAVA_HOME path incorrectly.   • Running each JUnit test in a separate JVM in Eclipse?

    I have a project with nearly 500 individual tests in around 200 test classes. Some of these tests don't do a great job of tearing down their own state after they're finished, and in Eclipse this results in some tests failing. The tests all pass when running the test suite from the command line via Ant. Can I enable 'test isolation' somehow in Eclipse? I don't mind if it takes longer to run. Long term, I will clean up the misbehaving tests, but in the short term I'd like to get the tests working.

  • Will client JVM for a web service(https) throw an SSL Exception when the server is having a valid ce

    I have a web service deployed on tomcat hosted on a remote server. I have set it up such that it can be accessed only via HTTPS. For this, I generated a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and used it to get a temporary certificate from VeriSign. My web service client is on my local machine. If I try to access the service it will throw a javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:unable to find valid certification path to requested target If I install the certificate in to local Java's keystore, the issue will be resolved. My question is if I install a valid SSL certificate from a CA in to my tomcat server, will I get this client-side error even if I do not import the certificate to local key store?

  • int datatype in 64bit JVM. Is it more "inefficient" than long?

    I heard that using shorts on 32bit system is just more inefficient than using ints. Is this the same for ints on a 64bit system? Python recently(?) basically merged ints with long and has basically a single datatype long, right? If you are sure that your app. will only run on 64bit then, is it even conceivable (potentially a good idea) to use long for everything in Java?

  • How can I get Syslogging to work on the JVM?

    I want to do syslogging from Java. There is a log4j appender, but it doesn't seem to work (for me anyway ... though Google results show many others with this issue still unresolved). I'm trying to debug the appender, so I've written the following script based upon RFC3164 It runs, but no logging appears in the syslog. // scala import java.io._ import java.net._ val ds = new DatagramSocket() val fullMsg = "<11>May 26 14:47:22 Hello World" val packet = new DatagramPacket(fullMsg.getBytes("UTF-8"), fullMsg.length, InetAddress.getLocalHost, 514) ds send packet ds.close I also tried using /bin/nc, but it doesn't work either. echo "<14>May 26 15:23:83 Hello world" > nc -u localhost 514 The Ubuntu command /usr/bin/logger does work, however. logger -p user.info hello world # logs: May 26 15:25:10 dsupport2 jem: hello world What could I be doing wrong?
