  • Accurately and securely measure the time spent viewing a web page

    Suppose the following: You have a web page that presents a simple game to a user (e.g. a quiz, a puzzle, etc). The user solves the puzzle, submits the result, and you want to measure as precisely as possible how long they took to solve it. Assume it's quite simple, so we're talking seconds, not hours. Also assume JavaScript is required anyway, so there's no need to think of JS-disabled browsers. Finally, assume we don't want to use anything like Flash, Silverlight, or the like. I can think of several techniques: Simply take the time between the points when the data was sent from the server and when the submission arrives. Since this is exclusively server-side, there's no chance for cheating. However, issues like network latency and page rendering time might make this unfair for users with slow computers / browsers / internet connections. On the first request, just send the page without the actual game data. When everything is loaded so far, retrieve the game data through an AJAX call and populate it into the page. This is similar to 1., but reduces some of the caveats introduced through time spent on overhead. Have the time measured on the client side using JavaScript and submitted alongside with the solution. This would theoretically be the most accurate, but it introduces the possibility of cheating, because you're relying on client data. Use the request time headers of a "ready to play" AJAX call and the result submission request. Same caveat as 3., as it is still client data. A combination of server side and client side measuring with some kind of plausibility analysis. I can't think of a good way, but maybe you can. Thoughts? Other ideas?

    I'm working on a sports website and need to convert the server's match start time to local match start time. After much googling, I figured the fastest and most accurate way is to get the GMT offset value in JavaScript. The trouble is, I can't pass the GMT offset value to PHP. I've tried using both the PHP session and cookie variables, but both are always empty. The website doesn't require a user account, so there isn't any stored GMT value in the database. I'm trying to auto-detect each user's local timezone every time he/she visits the website, and then calculate the local match start time based on the timezone offset. Can someone please advise me?     I store backups of databases in a directory structure year/month/day/time/backup_name an example would be basics_mini/2012/11/05/012232/RATIONAL.0.db2inst1.NODE0000.20110505004037.001 basics_mini/2012/11/06/012251/RATIONAL.0.db2inst1.NODE0000.20110505003930.001 note that timestamp from the backup file cannot be used. Before the automation testing starts the server time is set to 5.5.2011 So the question is how I can get the latest file if I pass the "base directory" (basics_mini) to some function that I am going to code. My thoughts are that I list the base directory and sort by time to get the year. Then I do the same for month, day and time. I wonder if there is any "easier" solution to that in php.

Meaning, my results should look like: postgres=# select * from foo ; datetimes ------------------------ 2012-12-12 15:45:10+00 --This one gets the default time. 2012-12-12 12:12:12+00 2012-12-12 12:12:00+00 (4 rows) I'm not really sure how to do this in postgres 8.4, I can't find anything in the datetime section of the manual or the sections regarding column default values.

Because I have added my time variable as 'string' I cannot use the valueLabelsInterval option to only show every 4 labels. Because I can't do that the labels overlap and look ugly. Is there any other way to only show every other time label or every 4th one, I read through the docs but could not see how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

    Hi Folks, Is there a tool out there to measure the actual Render time of an element(s) on a page? I don't mean download time of the resources, but the actual time the browser took to render something. I know that this time would vary based on factors on the client machine, but would still be very handy in knowing what the rendering engine takes a while to load. I would imagine this should be a useful utility since web apps are becoming pretty client heavy now. Any thoughts?

    I have a project on going for a TV guide, called mytvguide in the database - I use PHPMyAdmin. This is the structure for one table, which is called tvshow1: Field Type channel varchar(255) date date No airdate time No expiration time No episode varchar(255) setreminder varchar(255) but am not sure how to get DATE, TIME to work with the pagination script (below is the script, which works for the version with DATETIME): http://pastebin.com/6S1ejAFJ However, although the DATETIME one works - it shows programmes that air on the day itself like this: Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 2:35pm "Episode 2" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 12:50pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 5:55pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder but I'm not quite sure how to replicate that for the fields that use DATE, TIME functions as seen above. Any advice on this is appreciated, thanks!

    Any easy way to read all the columns in Matlab? my format is date time y1 y2 y3 y4 ......................... 4/27/2010 00:3:09 34 45 45 56 ................ so on currently i am reading these with the code [c,pathc]=uigetfile({'*.txt'},'Select the data','C:\Data'); file=[pathc c]; data= dlmread(file, ',', 1,3); so needless to say i am skipping the time stamps. Was wondering if there is aeasy way to read the time stamps and plot my other colums agianst the time in hours. my files are 43200 X 30 and some are 86400 X 90 Related question : is the format same for .csv and .xls files , i mean except ofcourse xlsread

  • Long time to load first sql connection in .NET

    For some reason it takes 7 seconds to open a connection to a sql server database for the firt time, subsequent connections takes a second. any idea what could be the reason? I'm using C# and asp.net Its after compilation, i essence every time i restart the site, which means every time it needs to actualy create the "first" connection. i understand that setting up connection pooling has overhead, but i have never seen that i should take 7 second to set it up.

I'm using this query method and sorting by lastpost_cl: $query="SELECT * FROM properties ORDER BY lastpost_cl"; $result=mysql_query($query); $num = mysql_num_rows ($result); mysql_close(); and I was thinking the way of checking the time would be: if (time() <= strtotime($lastpost_cl)) { } How can I combine the two and only show lastpost_cl that are older that the current time?

    I'm writing a code where: I.) The user adds "events" during run-time. (To a flowlayoutpanel) These events are turning some LEDs on/off, after "x" time has elapsed and the LED-turning functions are written in a Led-function.cs class. i.e: 1) Turn left led on After 3500ms 2) Turn right led on After 4000ms II.) When the user hits start a timer starts. // Create timer. System.Timers.Timer _timer; _timer = new System.Timers.Timer(); _timer.Interval = (1); _timer.Elapsed += (sender, e) => { HandleTimerElapsed(LedObject, device, _timer); }; _timer.Start(); III.) The timer's tick event is raised every millisecond and checks if the user definied time has ellapsed. Im measuring the elapsed time with adding +1 to an integer at every tick event. (NumberOfTicks++;) //Timer Handle private void HandleTimerElapsed(Led_Functions LedObject, string device, System.Timers.Timer _timer) { NumberOfTicks++; if (NumberOfTicks >= Start_time[0]) { LedObject.LeftLED_ONnobutton(device); } } IV.) What I noticed was that when the tick was set to 1. (So the tick event is raised every millisecond) Even if I set 3000ms to the evet the LED actually flashed around 6 seconds. When the tick was set to 100. (So every 0,1s) then the flash was more accurate (3,5sec or so). Any Ideas why im having this delay in time? Or do you have any ideas how could I implement it better? (So it complies with the libraries supplied with the Android NDK) I have looked at clock() localtime time But I'm still unsure whether it is possible to replicate the getTickCount windows function with the time library. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to do this or even if its possible?

  • c# .net framework subtracting time-span from date

    I want to subtract a time-span from a date-time object. Date is 1983/5/1 13:0:0 (y/m/d-h:m:s) Time span is 2/4/28-2:51:0 (y/m/d-h:m:s) I can use the native DateTime and TimeSpan objects to do this, after converting years and months of the time-span to days (assuming a 30 day month and a ~364 day year). new DateTime(1981,5,1,13,0,0).Subtract(new TimeSpan(878,13,51,0)); With this i get the result: {12/4/1978 11:09:00 PM} But this is not exactly what i expected. If i do this manually (assuming a 30 day month) i get 1981/0/3-10:9:0 This is pretty close to what i'm after except i shouldn't get 0 for month and year should be 1980. So can someone please show me how i can do this manually and avoid getting a 0 month value? Also why do i get a completely different value when i use native classes?
