• Set Java Application's virtual machine max memory without access to VM parameters because of custom

  I'm using a Java application which allows you to import custom files. On import, these files are loaded into memory. The problem is that the files I want to import are very big, this causes an OutOfMemory exception. The crash log also informs me that the VM was started with the java parameter "-Xmx512m", I want to alter this to "-Xmx1024m" so that I got double the memory available. The problem is that this application is using it's own JRE folder and that there's a launcher written in C which is calling the jvm.dll file. In any way, java.exe or javaw.exe are never called and thus I cannot set these parameters myself (if I delete these executables it doesn't matter, can still run the application - this is not the case with the dll). So, my question is, can I set this VM parameter in an other way? I'm even willing to alter the JRE files if there is no other way.

• Django "Error: cannot import name escape" on windows

  I cannot run the dev server because of this error ("Error: cannot import name escape"). I assume its because of modifications I've done to the project, but i have no idea how to find where the error is originating from to fix it. I don't import anything called escape anywhere. Update Using django-admin.py rather than the projects manage.py, don't know why... Update 2 Now manage.py is working. This may be because I had a file called email.py which was trying to import email.mime.text (ie trying to import itself) renaming to sendemail.py solved this problem.

• Node & Redis: Crucial Design Issues in Production Mode

  This question is a hybrid one, being both technical and system design related. I'm developing the backend of an application that will handle approx. 4K request per second. We are using Node.js being super fast and in terms of our database struction we are using MongoDB, with Redis being a layer between Node and MongoDB handling volatile operations. I'm quite stressed because we are expecting concurrent requests that we need to handle carefully and we are quite close to launch. However I do not believe I've applied the correct approach on redis. I have a class Student, and they constantly change stages(such as 'active', 'doing homework','in lesson' etc. Thus I created a Redis DB for each state. (1 for being 'active', 2 for being 'doing homework'). Above I have the structure of the 'active' students table; xa5p - JSON stringified object #1 pQrW - JSON stringified object #2 active_student_table - {{studentId:'xa5p'}, {studentId:'pQrW'}} Since there is no 'select all keys method' in Redis, I've been suggested to use a set such that when I run command 'smembers' I receive the keys and later on do 'get' for each id in order to find a specific user (lets say that age older than 15). I've been also suggested that in fact I used never use keys in production mode. My question is, no matter how 'conceptual' it is, what specific things I should avoid doing in Node & Redis in production stage?. Are they any issues related to my design? Students must be objects and I sure can list them in a list but I haven't done yet. Is it that crucial in production stage?

I want to store the filepath of the available wallpapers in my database. What I've tried: WallpaperManger.getWallpaperInfo() or WallpaperManger.getDrawable(). • Where/When does C# and the .NET Framework fail to be the right tool?

  In my non-programming life, I always attempt to use the approprite tool for the job, and I feel that I do the same in my programming life, but I find that I am choosing C# and .NET for almost everything. I'm finding it hard to come up with (realistic business) needs that cannot be met by .NET and C#. Obviously embedded systems might require something less bloated than the .NET Micro Framework, but I'm really looking for line of business type situations where .NET is not the best tool. I'm primarly a C# and .NET guy since its what I'm the most comfertable in, but I know a fair amount of C++, php, VB, powershell, batch files, and Java, as well as being versed in the web technologes (javascript, html/css). But I'm open minded about it my skill set and I'm looking for cases where C# and .NET are not the right tool for the job. The bottom line here, is that I feel that I'm choosing C# and .NET simply because I am very comfertable with it, so I'm looking for cases where you have chosen something other than .NET, even though you are primarly a .NET developer.

  Recently I have purchased a notebook that cames with Windows Home Basic (that don't have with ASP.Net/IIS. I thought in upgrade the Windows version to one with ASP.Net/IIS, but I thought in another possibility: I have an Hard Disk Case with a 360Gb HD. I thought in create a virtual machine with Windows Ultimate (installing too ASP.Net, IIS and Visual Studio 2008) in this HD Case, then I can access my "development enviroment" in any computer that I will work on (my desktop machine and my notebook). But I was worried about the performance. I don't have experience working in Virtual Machines (I use it just to quick compatibility tests)... Are you using Virtual Machine as your primary development enviroment? What your finds? ==================== Thanks for your answers! It really did help me! I would like to know too about portability ie.: the virtual machine that I created in my laptop will work in the desktop? I will need re-activate Windows?

  We are deploying sharepoint MOSS 2007 at our work. I'm trying to come up with a sharepoint development and deployment methodology. We have Dev/QA/Prod environments and I need a way, preferably automated to deploy changes from Dev to QA and from there to prod. We are creating site collections web parts etc. Some of it is done directly within sharepoint, some through Sharepoint designer or visual studio. I'm looking for a way to extract this and deploy it to other enviornments. I tried stsadm backup/restore import/export etc but they all move the data along with it as well. I just need the structure deployed. Content deployment paths and jobs does the same thing as well. We use MSBuild & Curisecontrol.net for other .net projects to automate build/deployment process. I'm looking for something similar with sharepoint if possible. What are your best practices for this? Since my team is learning we don't have a defined process and we are open to change our development process if needed.

  Let me say upfront that I'm so ignorant on this topic that I don't even know whether this question has objective answers or not. If it ends up being "not," I'll delete or vote to close the post. Here's the scenario: I just wrote a little web service. It works on my machine. It works on my team lead's machine. It works, as far as I can tell, on every machine except for the production server. The exception that the production server spits out upon failure originates from a third-party JAR file, and is skimpy on information. I search the web for hours, but don't come up with anything useful. So what's the procedure for tracking down an issue that occurs only on production machines? Is there a standard methodology, or perhaps category/family of tools, for this? The error that inspired this question has already been fixed, but that was due more to good fortune than a solid approach to debugging. I'm asking this question for future reference. I would like to externalize those strings to a env.properties file. I used org.codehaus.mojo's properties-maven-plugin to look inside src/main/resources/conf/app/env.properties. • Should developers *really* have private offices?

  We will probably be moving within a year, so we have to make some decisions regarding office layout. At the moment, our company is basically one big office. When our developers can't bother to be disturbed at all, we all have our own headphones to mute the outside world. Still, it seems a lot of people feel that private offices are no doubt the way to go. From Joel's article Private Offices Redux: Not every programmer in the world wants to work in a private office. In fact quite a few would tell you unequivocally that they prefer the camaradarie and easy information sharing of an open space. Don't fall for it. They also want M&Ms for breakfast and a pony. Open space is fun but not productive. Even though I can understand the benefit on productivity, does having a private office really result in more net productivity? There seem to be plenty of companies that create wide open spaces and still maintain good productivity. Or so it seems. (I should mention many of them use cubicles, though) What is your opinion on this? What does your company do? Is there some middle ground in this? • heroku logs --ps run showign nothing

  I have two running apps on heroku staging and production. They are near identical enviornments. (Staging has extra configs IE RailsFootnotes, Bullet gem) When I run heroku logs --ps run --app jl-staging Returns as logs like 2012-08-30T01:30:42+00:00 heroku[run.1]: Starting process with command `bundle exec rake jewellover:warn_users` This log is a Task set to run with Heroku Schedular Free. Everything Works perfect but when I do the same with heroku logs --ps run --app jl-production There are no results. No heroku[run.1] process logs. Both environments have the same scheduled tasks, albeit at different times but none the less both run scheduled tasks at specified times. Is there something im missing about heroku[run.1] processes in production env? Does heroku only keep the -ps logs for a certain amount of time? It seems to show less activity than the normal logs. Maybe only show 24hrs worth of logs rather than Last 100 logs... I need to log and debug the [run.1] process from the production env... specifically the jewellover:warn_users task. any ideas?

  Hey, Recently I was tasked with writing up formal procedures for a team based development enviroment. We have several projects with multiple modules each. Right now there are only two programmers, however there are plans to expand to 4-6 programmers. Each programmer will be working on the same project and possibly pages which may cause over writing or error issues. So far the ideal solution I have thought up is: Local development (WAMP/VM or some virtual server instance on their own machine). Once a developer has finished their developments, they check it into the CVS Repository and merge it wih other fixes etc. The CVS version is then deployed to the primary dev server for testing by the devs. The MySQL DAtabases are kept on the primary dev server and users may remotely connect to it. Any Schema / Data alterations are run through a DB Admin who will notify all devs of any DB Changes (Which should be rare). Does anyone see an issue with this or have a better solution?

• Android 4.0.3 OpengL ES 2.0 issue

  i develop live wallpapers using Opengl ES 2.0 engine. My wallapapers run smooth on 2.x Android Devices , but in 4.03 i see some strange things. 1st seconds (maybe a minute max) lwp runs smooth , but after that starts dropping frames especially when objects passing near camera allmost crashes. But no error on eclipse Log. I watched Eclipse log from the begining of loading the lwp to the point of dropping frames. I ve seen that on My LG optimus 2X , and my Samsung Galaxy S2. Any Idea what to check , or what is going on?? UPDATE i just noticed that changing render mode from dirty to continuously fixed the problem , but until screen orientation changes , or goes of and on. after that renderer freaks out.

• Perform separate compilation of Latex documents

  When compiling latex documents the compiler emits a lot of "object" files. This clutters the directories I'm working on and it difficults the use of VCS like SVN. When I work with C++ code I have separate directories for the code and the objects, I can run make on the source directory but the .o files go to the build directory. Is there a proper way to perform this separate compilation with Latex documents? Can it be done by using Makefiles or by passing options to the latex compiler? Thanks

• config.cache_classes = true in production mode has problems in IE

  Hi Dears, In my rails app. I am using link_to_function to bring an ajax tabs in one page.Everything works fine in Moazilla and other browsers. But in IE the tabs are not loading only when the server is started in production mode(doesn't matter whether its webrick or mongrel). In development mode everything is fine. So I figured out that the issue was with one line config.cache_classes = true in app/config/environments/production.rb when i changed the above code to config.cache_classes = false everything works fine. So I assume caching causes problem in rails. When I Googled about this I found many have the issues with caching. So my question is 1) is there any other fix for this? 2) Does this fix (config.cache_classes = false) causes any performance issues. If then how to overcome that?   I pulled a stupid and accidentally committed a folder named ${env.CATALINA_HOME} to my subversion repo. I tried doing an svn rm /path/to/${env.CATALINA_HOME} but it says "bad substitution" which I'm guessing means that it cant figure out why i'm using ${} notation in the path. I also tried surrounding the path in quotes, to no avail. Suggestions?

• Can we view objets in the JVM memory?

  Hey, At work we found that on some instances (particulary the slow ones) we have a different behaviour, acquired at the reboot. We guess a cache is not initialized correctly, or maybe a concurrency problem... Anyway it's not reproductible in any other env than production. We actually don't have loggers to activate... it's an old component... Thus i'd like to know if there are tools that can help us to see the different objets present in the JVM memory in order to check the content of the cache... Thank you!

  I'm about to create an development enviroment for a little developer company(3-4 developers + some testers). Our development platform is .NET and Oracle. My question is how to structure the whole enviroment.How many servers do I need ? Should be one server for developers and one for testers ? I'd like to have one build server (TeamCity). Where to put the Subversion ? Visual Studio's would be on developers laptops. Do I need one database for development and one extra for build server ? What else could be helpful ??

  I'm trying to trim a few lines from a file. I know exactly how many lines to remove (say, 2 from the top), but not how many total lines are in the file.
