• Why can't I get to a shared folder from Windows

  I want to access a folder on my new Ubuntu 12.10 box from any machine on my network without the need to provide credentials. My machine name is Ubuntu1 I have a 2TB disk that formatted NTFS that has media on it The mount point is mount1 I have numerous folders on the disk and I want to share each of them individually I have enabled folder1 and folder2 for sharing I have enabled shared access, Allow others to create and delete files in this folder and guest access is allowed. The folder icon now has arrows so I assume all is good. From windows I can see under network Ubuntu1folder1 Ubuntu1folder2 When I click to open the folder from windows I get the error "You cannot access \Ubuntu1\folder1 You do not have permission to access \Ubuntu1\folder1 I have them both on the same workgroup. Your assistance would be appreciated

• Working with logout dialog box - text error

  I am having a problem with the shutdown dialog box for Ubuntu 12.04. If I am logged in as any user and press shutdown, I see the box with the question 'Are you sure..." and its usual options. Shutting down when I am not logged in as a specific user, however, displayed only square boxes. An image of this error can be found here: I believe this error started a few weeks ago when i accidentally changed the group for my root system directory, so it might be a permission thing or an improperly assigned group lingering somewhere. The trouble is that I don't know where the text for this box is stored, and no idea where to begin checking. Can any one point me in the right direction?

• Unable to start backuppc

  I had a ext4 drive today I replaced with a RAID drive, I moved all the files from the old HDD. After that I tried to start the Backuppc but I'm getting the following error: Can't create a test hardlink between a file in /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/pc and /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/cpool. Either these are different file systems, or this file system doesn't support hardlinks, or these directories don't exist, or there is a permissions problem, or the file system is out of inodes or full. Use df, df -i, and ls -ld to check each of these possibilities. Quitting... • Does NASA license the software that it develops?

  NASA provides a visualization software called Panoply. There is a Credits and Acknowledgments page that acknowledges and lists the licenses of software dependencies, but provides no information about its own license. I have looked at other software produced by NASA, including the source code for GISS and can not find any information about a licence. The closest information that I can find is in the FAQ for the global climate model EdGCM Global that says the code is in the "public domain" is it standard practice at NASA to release code into the public domain? are there exceptions? Can I assume that Panoply is public domain and can be used without restriction other than than those imposed by licenses of software dependencies? Is the absence of specific permission to reuse the code a concern (this issue was raised in the answer to a separate question) How common is this practice across government agencies?

  I was thinking about developing a small community website where people of a certain profession can register and post their own blogs (Which includes an optional photo). I then got to thinking about how people might use this and the fact that if they are given the option to add a photo, they might be likely to use one that they simply find on Google, another social network or even an existing online blog/magazine article. So how do I cover myself from getting a fine slapped on me and to make it purely the fault of the individual uploader? I plan on having an option where the user can credit a photo by typing in the original photographers name & web link (optional) and to make them tick a check box stating that the post is their own content and that they have permission to use any images but is that enough to cover myself? How do other sites do it?

• samba share not allowing windows pc to access

  I have been trying to no avail, to share folders on my ubuntu pc with a windows network. The windows network isn't a homegroup, just a straight up access to folders made public. I can see the ubuntu shares I make, but when I try to access them I get a permission denied contact your system administrator type message. Could someone clarify the area re adding a user to samba, as there are about 30 different unix usernames! I just want my windows network to have unrestricted access to my linux folders. Any help would be greatly appreciated

How can you fix this? If there stands www.example.com/index.php it works but if you surf to www.example.com I get this message.

  Given a public site with no logins: I let people post links to public Facebook profiles, and my site fetches the profile picture and displays it. Would it be ok if I just told people to post profiles of which they had the owner’s permission? Does such a statement exonerate me from copyright infringements and place the burden on the user? Edit: For bonus points. Can the statement just be a notice under the button (that will save the link) that says that "By clicking this button you agree to the terms and conditions" with maybe a link to the terms and conditions.

  I am working on E-commerce Web Application, which is having users and permissions to them.. So according to their permission, For Ex: I am storing variable $chk = 'write' or $chk = 'read' on session and my condition is if ($chk == 'write') { // some function here to modify the page & its content // If true, then display SAVE button to save all changes made. } But, Sometimes my page cant access this variable, the value of $chk is unknown hence its not displaying SAVE button. But, it shows the button after refreshing the page or visiting sometime later. Can anyone help me to solve this.. Thanks in advance

• Adding multiple byte arrays in c# [migrated]

  I'm working on a legacy system that uses byte arrays for permission levels. Example: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 means they have "Full Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 means they have "Add Control" 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 means they have "Delete Control" So, if a User has "00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07" that means they have all 3 (as far as it has been explained to me). Now, my question is that I need to know how to get to "0x07" when creating/checking records. I don't know the syntax for actually combining 0x01, 0x02 and 0x04 so that I come out with 0x07.

• Ubuntu stops letting wired or wireless mice click through after a short while

  Hi! I have a very confusing problem that renders Ubuntu near unusable. Whenever I try to use any wired or wireless mouse with my Ubuntu 10.10 install, clicks stop going through - often times, this blockage of clicks happens in less than a minute. Sometimes no clicks are accepted, other times, clicks are accepted in certain windows and denied in others. The end result is the same, and I am forced to resort to using the keyboard to navigate. If anyone could help me resolve this problem, I would be very appreciative, as it would finally allow me to try Ubuntu. Thanks!

• root and home are on seperate partitions, but home still uses up space on root?

  When installing Ubuntu 12.10 for the first time, I made sure /home had it's own partition, gave it about 185GB, and gave root ~10GB. Now root is almost full after a few days and I've noticed that root is as big as /home and some additional MB from some actual root files. Note that I deleted some unused files in /home to make sure it really affects how much space is used in root, and it clearly does. • Copying VBoxAdditions to usr/share/virtualbox folder

  Since for some reason VBox does not find the Additions on the internet, I was trying to install them in the Ubuntu directory Vbox is looking for them - which is: usr/share/virtualbox but I am denied permission to do so. Any way around it? I am relatively new to ubuntu (know how to use the GUI, but still learning how to talk to the machine proper, so many things will be new to me; used to be power user/analyst for MS Windows, 98-Vista, so not a PC newbie, but still I'd say Linux newbie). • Xfce session will not login from login prompt. Why?

  Well, not sure how I did it, but for some reason I am unable to get past the login screen on Xfce. What's odd is that I had set the machine up (from install) to login automatically. Then when I finish rebooting after installing sudo apt-get install openssh-server and sudo apt-get install vnc4server all the sudden I am getting prompted for my password. I proceed to type my password (successfully might I add) to login, the screen goes black for a second, then brings me right back to the same password prompt. I am able ssh in(now), but I get no love from workstation login. Maybe vnc4server is the culprit? What did I do? And can I fix it? EDIT: The guest account, however will let me login no problem. What gives? I have a sneaking feeling that this could be permission issue.

Although after this nothing happens... When I open the messenger nothing comes up and in Online Accounts it still asks: Please authorize Ubuntu to access your Facebook account... but I have already given permission... Please help me out. • Permissions depending on parameters passed to application

  I have a java app that writes to a very important table I have. This is sudo protected, but this app takes a parameters for where the output should go. The default is the REAL DEAL but the "output" parameter takes priority over the default, so if a user provides a path that they have write permission for, say: /home/username/mystuff then I would like for users to be allowed to write to these directories. The app is launched in a shell script, so I am wondering if I can check that the string does not equal /path/to/real/deal and not empty (since /path/to/real/deal is the default) and allow users to write to places they have permissions for. My impression of linux permissions is that it is tied to the application itself and cannot be conditionally approved, but I wonder if there is some bash fu or alternative method I can perform to get me my desired result. My hard drive has 4 partitions: Partition 1 = 40 gb Windows (NTFS, lable = win32) Partition 2 = 320 gb Windows (FAT label = common) Partition 3 = 40 gb Ubuntu (EXT4) I installed apached2. Then, to change its default www directory, I ran gksu gedit /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default and, in the editor, changed the location to /media/common/www. After that I ran these commands in a terminal: chmod 777 /media/common/www chmod 777 /media/common/www/*.* After that I ran: firefox 127.0.0.1/index.php It said: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at 127.0.0.1 Port 80 Before my changes it was working fine. How can I run my websites?

  I downloaded NetBeans IDE and Eclipse IDE from the internet and installed then. Well, the Eclipse IDE works fine, but when I execute NetBeans IDE directly from the link, without sudo permission, it shows me lots of error telling that some files are read only. This does not happens when I'm using the terminal to call the .sh script with sudo permissions. Another thing that bothers me: How can I fix my shortcuts in the Ubuntu's 12.04 sidebar? I want to combine a launcher with enough permissions to do everything it's needing and fix it in my sidebar. Is it possible?

Every tutorial I read says that you should not be installing rvm with sudo for a single user install. Why can I seem to get it installed without running sudo?

  I'm recently having a problem in my Lubuntu deskptop: sound through the speakers doesn't seem to work. The funny thing is: it works when I plug in my earphones.
