  • Domain joining debate for Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007 on windows SBS 2008 for a user on a laptop that will travel a fair amount of the time.

    I'm basically debating on whether or not to join the Domain on a Laptop, and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. If the computer were staying in the office, its a no brainer. Join the domain. In this case I have a user who will come into the office a few days a week, and work remotely the rest of the time. There is a working VPN using OpenVPN client/server, but it's not site-to-site. My knee jerk reaction is to not join the domain, so that the user can have 1 profile that they always use. In this configuration, should Outlook work properly with the user's domain account, and should the shared calendar still work (at least once inside the VPN)? My concern with joining the domain would be the inability to login to it when elsewhere. Is there maybe a way around this with caching or something? Would creating a second local login make sense for a user like this in any way? If so, why not just skip the domain join to begin with? Any thoughts on or experiences with this would be appreciated.   • Change the default SqlCommand CommandTimeout with configuration rather than recompile?

    I am supporting an ASP.Net 3.5 web application and users are experiencing a timeout error after 30 seconds when trying to run a report. Looking around the web it seems it's easy enough to change the timeout in the code, unfortunately I'm not able to access the code and recompile. Is there anyway to configure the default for either the web app, the worker process, IIS or the whole machine? I've compared the machine.config and web.config files from the .Net directory on the live and test and they seem the same, compared the two IIS setups, also looked at the SQL Server configuration and the only difference is that the live server is clustered on 64bit W2K3 while the test server is on 32bit.

  • Bugs in Excel's ActiveX combo boxes?

    I have noticed that I get all sorts of annoying errors when: I have ActiveX comboboxes on a worksheet (not an excel form) The comboboxes have event code linked to them (eg, onchange events) I use their listfillrange or linkedcell properties (clearing these properties seems to alleviate a lot of problems) (Not sure if this is connected) but there is data validation on the targeted linkedcell. I program a fairly complex excel application that does a ton of event handling and uses a lot of controls. Over the months, I have been trying to deal with a variety of bugs dealing with those combo boxes. I can't recall all the details of each instance now, but these bugs tend to involve pointing the listfillrange and linkedcell properties at named ranges, and often have to do with the combo box events triggering at inappropriate times (such as when application.enableevents = false). These problems seemed to grow bigger in Excel 2007, so that I had to give up on these combo boxes entirely (I now use combo boxes contained in user forms, rather than directly on the sheets). Has anyone else seen similar problems? If so, was there a graceful solution? I have looked around with Google and so far haven't spotted anyone with similar issues. Some of the symptoms I end up seeing are: Excel crashing when I start up (involves combobox_onchange, listfillrange-named range on another different sheet, and workbook_open interactions). (note, I also had some data validation on the the linked cells in case a user edited them directly.) Excel rendering bugs (usually when the combo box changes, some cells from another sheet get randomly drawn over the top of the current sheet) Sometimes it involves the screen flashing entirely to another sheet for a moment. Excel losing its mind (or rather, the call stack) (related to the first bullet point). Sometimes when a function modifies a property of the comboboxes, the combobox onchange event fires, but it never returns control to the function that caused the change in the first place. The combobox_onchange events are triggered even when application.enableevents = false. Events firing when they shouldn't (I posted another question on stack overflow related to this). At this point, I am fairly convinced that ActiveX comboboxes are evil incarnate and not worth the trouble. I have switched to including these comboboxes inside a userform module instead. I would rather inconvenience users with popup forms than random visual artifacts and crashing (with data loss).

  • Too Many Different Cell Formats

    I have a massive file with 10 sheets recreated from scratch, 12 sheets updated, 5 sheets loaded with raw data, and 7 sheets that are used by the macros for the report. I have recently added a new sheet and am running into the Excel "Too many different cell formats" problem. I have read some of the google search results and they say I should simplify the formatting, but I don't even know how I got up to 4000 distinct cell formats, let alone how much I'm using which ones, so I can remove some. It is also popping up some times the file is run, but not all, until such time as it comes up, and then it happens every time it is run. Since the macro is doing so much of the work, including creating the 10 sheets from scratch, I am not sure what to do. Does anyone know of a Macro I could run to get a listing of all the cell formats and how many cells are using them? Does anyone know of a program they trust to help remove excess cell formats?   • How to prevent Excel from wanting to start in Safe Mode?

    We have a background process that calls Excel for generation of report spreadsheets. Occasionally, a crash or inadvertent server reboot will occur while Excel is running. The first launch of Excel after the restart brings up the dialog box (paraphrasing here) "Would you like to start Excel in safe mode?" (Yes/No) The issue is that our background app can't handle this dialog box, and acts as if Excel will not start properly, and the background jobs fail as a result. I can find CL switches for starting Excel in safe mode, but I can't find anything that will instruct Excel to always start in normal mode without that prompt dialog. (I don't have access to the other program's code, so I can't make it pass through a "Yes" value if it runs into that box.) Is there a registry hack or some other way I can force Excel into normal mode every time it's called?

  • Problem with creation of scheduled task from IIS6 on SR2003

    Hi, I am writing a webapplication using .NET. The webapp creates scheduled tasks using the System.Diagnostics.Process class, calling SCHTASKS.EXE with parameters. I have changed the identity on the app pool, to a specific domain user. The domain-user is local administrator on all the four webservers. From webserver01 I am creating tasks on webserver01 to webserver04. It works perfect for 3-5 days, but then it breaks. It gives me the following errormessage in a messagebox: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." If I have the system in the broken state, and I change the identity of the app pool to Domain administrator, it works. As I change it back to my domain-user, it breaks again. If I reboot the server, it works again for the same amount of days, but will break again. It seems like a permission-related problem. I just don't understand why it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I hope someone outthere has seen this problem! Looking forward to hear from you! Kind regards, Morten, Denmark

    Hi All, I have the this bit of code in a VBA class which is to workout the number of days between a property of the class (a date) and today’s date. Can anyone see why this would be giving an error in a class? I have referenced atpvbaen.xls. Edit: I have found that when I run the code through a menu option I have created on the menu bar it fails, but when I run it via a button or through the VB Editor it works fine.     I am trying to use the unmanaged ImageMagick library in my ASP.NET application from the command line using System.Diagnostics.Process. Basically, users will upload an .eps file to the site, and then I will run the command line command to convert it into .jpg. I get the error "System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Access is denied". The main between the two servers is that the production is 64-bit and runs Plesk to manage multiple domains. I've tried adding rights asp.net user to the ImageMagick directory. The PS Admin says that in the case of Plesk, it's the same account that I use to access the site in VS using FPE. Does anyone know what I might do in order to allow this process to run on my production server? Thanks, Mike

For instance: associated to each column is last name, first name and city. i have hundreds of names associated to different cities and what i would like is from worksheet1.xls to copy all the New York clients to worksheet2.xls either when i open worksheet2 or via macro what ever is easier and because last name is in one cell and the first name is in the other i would have to copy both. I saw that its possible to link cells from one worksheet to another and then do a vlookup depending on the criteria. Is that the best easiest way or is there another? thanks in advance and cheers oleg

    Hello, I want to create & fill a .xls file using ADO.NET or LINQ, but I do not want to have the columns names in the first row. I just want to insert rows starting in row no. 1. I know I have to insert colums first, but... is there a way to 'hide' those columns headers? The problem is that, in first row of my spreadsheet, I must have only two values (one in A1 and the other in B1), but in the remaining rows I'll be inserting more than just two values (maximum 15 columns). I'm open to suggestions/hacks/tricks even if that's not the best way of doing this. Thanks!

    I have a report which I used the command subtotals. Aesthetically, I just want to make these subtotal rows (columns A to P) filled with color, be in Bold and have a surrounding border. There are hundreds of totals generated in my report. And they do not have a recurring row position. So basically in order for it to look good, I do it manually per row. Is there a faster way? The following line of code looks in column E of the Source file, and if any of the entries match the values shown in the code it copies that row of data to paste into the Destination file. If Range("E" & j) <> "Manager" And Range("E" & j) <> "Lead" And Range("E" & j) <> "Technical" And Range("E" & j) <> "Analyst" Then Rows(j).Delete The problem I have is that if none of these values are found in the Source file, I receive the following error: Run time error '1004': Delete method of range class failed and in Debug mode it highlights this part of the line as the source of the error, but I've no idea why. Rows(j).Delete I just wondered whether someone may be able to look at this please and let me know where I'm going wrong, or perhaps even suggest a more efficient process of allowing the user to merge the workbooks.
