• Boot from Second SATA Drive

  I have a Dell Precision 490 Workstation, and I just had my other question answered, Install Ubuntu to drive B without impacting drive A, and now I'm having a boot sequence issue. The external drive is great, boots up fine on my laptop, but how do I tell my desktop to boot from my second SATA drive and not the first SATAdrive. My drive configuration as follows SATA-0: Windows SATA-1: DVDR SATA-2: Ubuntu When I choose the boot menu, the option I have is "Internal Hard Drive". I assume it searches all drives, and loads the first bootable one it finds (which happens to be Windows), but I'd like to be able to select the drive from a list. Has anyone experienced this? Is possible without disabling the first hard drive in the BIOS?

• How can I decrease the time spent reformatting / restoring user's workstations?

  I just working for a medium sized company (approx. 150 users). When user's workstations need to be reformatted for any variety of reasons, we reformat, reinstall windows from an oem disk, install drivers, install shop desired software, and restore user's documents from latest backup. While the process isn't very difficult it is very time consuming. What are some options simplify / speed up this process? Mostly a complete Windows shop with most servers running Win2k3 Enterprise and workstations running a variety of XP, Vista, and 7. Workstations are purchased through a variety of OEMs mostly Dell.

• Laptop changes resolution when the lid is closed/opened

  hi i've had a problem for the last couple of days where the resolution on my laptop changes when i close the lid i'm running windows xp professional sp2 on a dell inspiron 1501 the video chip is an ati radeon xpress 1150 according to the catalyst control center software i've got installed which i think came with the drivers or something i've seen this happen before but i installed an old game called road rash a couple days ago after seeing it mentioned on reddit and i'm wondering if it might be related anyone know how i can stop this from happening? i have a workaround where i can manually change the resolution to something else and then change it back but that's a lot of work to do every time i close the laptop which is a lot thanks!

• Samsung TV connected to PC for Powerpoint

  I have a 42" Samsung LCD TV connected to a Dell computer with a PCI Radion 9000 via a 35' VGA cable. It's purpose is to run power point presentations over the TV for our retail store. I have tried every combination of button clicking on the video card options, and everything on the TV, and I still get black bars on the top and bottom of the image. It looks like I am watching a old wide screen movie on a full screen TV. The TV's suggested resolution is 1024x768, and that is what the output is set to. I have tried this with a nVida PCI card as well with the same results.

• Debian 5.0.8 won't detect my ethernet adapter

  I'm installing Debian 5.0.8 on a Dell Latitude E6410 using the network install x86 CD. Unfortunately, it won't detect my Ethernet adapter. Specifically, I get the error: No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list. lspci shows: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 10ea (rev 05) That should correspond to the e100e driver. But, if I select it from the list, the install CD still fails to detect it. Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 are able to use this device with no problem. Does anybody know what I can do to make Debian use my Ethernet adapter? Thanks, PaulH

• How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

  I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

  My laptop is supposed to have 6 GB ram but it only detects 2 GB of it, so I don't know what to do. I searched the web for answer and what i get that there's 2 possible problem: 1- That 4 GB ram card is broken and not working 2- or the 2 ram card have a different path so the windows chose the path of the smaller ram card which would be the 2 GB ram I don't know what is the path in first place so I really don't know what to do. How would I troubleshoot, and work out why the 4 GB stick is not being detected? My laptop's specifications are as follows: Windows 7 Home premium 64- bit Operating system processor : intel (R) core(TM) i7 CPU Q740 @1.73 GHz 1.73GHz installed memory(RAM) : 2.00 GB (but it suppose to be 6 GB -_- ) My laptop is Dell and it's Model N5010

• Windows 8 stuck installing update

  I just restarted my laptop to finish installing a Windows update and now it is stuck on please wait. I have tried a system restore but there is only one restore point in the list and it does not work for some reason... I also tried to do a refresh but it asks me for media. I plug in the usb I used to install windows 8 a while and go and says that the media failed to load. I'm kind of stuck on options now. I can't boot and I can't restore and it seems I cant format either! Is there anything anything else I can do to get things going?! I'm running Windows 8 on a dell xps 14 ultrabook. Win 8 is installed on an msata drive and booting using EFi.

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • Can I connect my ipod's earphones to my computer?

  My computer (recent model Dell z600) has 2 input devices on the front of the computer, 1 has an icon of headphones and the other is a Mic icon. When I plugin my earphones to the input device that has the headphones, and play some sound I don't hear anything from my earphones (sounds comes from built in speakers). I know when I plugin a USB headphone set, it switches over to those on but for some reason my earphones are not being picked up. Is it not compatible? • How to recover Windows Vista product key?

  Two years ago I've bought asus laptop with Windows Vista preinstalled. I also received recovery dvd with it. Now, I want to reinstall Windows and fully format the hard drive. However, the sticker with Windows product key under the laptop is unreadable. I tried recovering the key with ProduKey and similar software but they show another product key - it is different than the one from the sticker (I checked on another asus laptop and on my dell laptop). Do you know if I it is possible to reinstall the operating system with the product key obtained from ProduKey? If not, how can I retrieve the product key? It seems stupid that it was only placed on the sticker that is destroyed after some time if you frequently hold the laptop on your lap. I've tried ProduKey and Recover Keys and they show the same key. However, it's not the one from the sticker. Thanks in advance for help.

• Does PCI bus really occupy 1.8GB

  I am using a Dell Vostro 1700 laptop which currently has 2GB of RAM. I was considering buying some more memory to upgrade it to 4GB. I am running 32 bit Windows Vista and I know that there can be issues that prevent it from making use of a full 4GB which I believe relate to the fact that memory mapped devices, e.g. graphics card, also need to be allocated addresses in the 4GB range addressable with 32 bits. Consequently I was looking at device manager - resources by connection - memory to see what devices where allocated what memory addresses. I was surprised to see that there was an entry for [80000000 - F3FFFFFF] PCI bus. That is a 1.8GB range of addresses. When I expanded it the only thing in it was [E0000000 - EFFFFFFF] NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT which is only 256MB. So my question is does the PCI bus really occupy 1.8GB of address space and will it prevent my computer from making use of any more memory than it already has.

• 'DNS service isn't responding' in windows 7

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • PS/2 mouse works with Windows 7 32-bit but not recognised by 64-bit, What to do?

  Our USB mouse was stolen and a PS/2 OK_520 Mouse that works OK on my Medion PC, running Windows 7 32-bit, if plugged in before booting, is not recognised by Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell INSPIRONone_19T with a 19" Touch Screen. (It is a communal computer available to all residents.) A USB mouse works OK and the Update Driver option reports: 'driver is up to date'. Without the USB Mouse, Device Manager/Mice shows only the Touch Screen as a Mouse. The Add New Hardware option searches but shows nothing and the Troubleshooter says ' device possibly not recognised, alterations made to system, try again.' but it is still not recognised after repeated re-boots. The BIOS does not seem to have any option to enable a PS/2 Mouse. The Mouse is very old so maybe it is not 64-bit compatible, or there is no 64-bit driver for one, but how to get one if the device is not recognised?

• Windows 7 starter will not shutdown or logoff

  Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

• Are there any 17-20 inch monitors that support displayport?

  I've got dual monitors now (both 20 inch 1600x1200). After seeing the new eyefinity cards out there (and reading the CodingHorror post on three monitors) I've decided to get a third. It's time to upgrade my video card anyway. Since I don't already have a third monitor and will be buying one new, I figure it'd make sense to buy one that already had a DisplayPort interface so as to avoid the adapter issue. However, I can't seem to find any monitors on newegg that support this (it's not even an option in the power search, and a keyword search turned up only adapters and video cards). A quick google showed me several 30 inchers (like Dell's, but that's way too expensive, and I don't have that much room on my desk even if I had that money) and some 22 inch models. Again, I'm looking for a 17-20 inch with a DisplayPort interface built in. Any suggestions?

  For some time now, when buying new computers (laptops in particular) from big name brands-like DELL, HP, TOSHIBA, etc.-most of them come with a "rescue" or "restore" partion instead of installation CD/DVD. Said partitions have everything needed to rebuild the factory installed OS, unfortunately they also include all crapware that the OEM installed on the machine. Is it there a way to custom create such a partition with out all the useless software included?. They seem quite appealing considering they only use about 10GB-20GB of space and offer the pretty much the same functionality as a complete system image/backup.

  What is this port "Acer Converter Port"? Very little information can be found on the internet. It's basically the same as miniDP? Can I connect a monitor like Dell U2713H on this one? • Why is my wireless so slow compared to my wired download speed?

  I just used speedtest.net (using Firefox) to compare my wired connection speed with my wireless connection speed. With my current contract (with Videotron), I'm supposed to get Download speed: 8Mbps Upload speed: 1Mbps Here are the results of the speedtest.net test: Wired Ping: 14ms Download speed: 8.41Mbps Upload speed: 1.04Mbps Wireless Ping: 16ms Download speed: 0.18Mbps Upload speed: 0.98Mbps The difference in download speeds seems staggering to me since I did the test 1 meter aways from my router. Any clue as to why my wireless download speed is so low compared to my wired download speed? using Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer Aspire 5536-5519 Oh and it might be worth mentioning that my girlfriend has no trouble at all with her wireless connection. No slowness at all. (She uses Firefox on Windows 7 on a Dell) Here's the results for the same test on her system: Ping: 22ms Download speed; 8.44Mbps Upload speed: 1.02Mbps

• Function key taken by another program, how to default it

  Everytime I press the F11 key it opens up a browser window with the same URL. This happens anywhere I press it and I need this key to have it's default behavior because I use it to program on Visual Studio (Windows 7). Any ideas why this is happening and how to go back to default function keys?, I haven't installed anything that I remember can cause this behavior. This is a standard Dell desktop key board, no multimedia keys, like this one: Firing URL is http://argos:8080/Login.jsp?jsessionid=55rh3obsahm9m seems like one of our company's internal addresses but IT guys say they have no idea about it. I don't see any suspicious software that can be causing this.

  Installing MS Intellipoint 8.2 (for my MS touch mouse) on my Dell Inspiron 580 always gives the following error: "Setup must close because an error occurred. • Unauthorized computer use via keyboard or remote access?

  I’m suspecting my computer is being used when I’m not at home. This is happening either physically or remotely. My wireless switch is off. Is there any way possible to detect and/or monitor activity without purchasing software? My settings are being changed as well as passwords (Bios PW was changed and I cannot access Bios settings). I connect via the network cable. Is it possible for someone (in range) to connect to my laptop even if the wireless switch is off? This is a Dell Inspiron 1720 with the WLAN 1395 card. • virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. • What could cause a file system to spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time?

  We've got DB2 LUW running on a RHEL box. We had a crash of DB2 and IBM came back and said that a file that DB2 was trying to access (through open64()) unmounted or became invalid. We have done nothing but restart the database and things seem to be running fine. Also, the file in question looks perfectly normal now: $ cd /db/log/TEAMS/tmsinst/NODE0000/TEAMS/T0000000/ $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT $ file C0000000.CAT C0000000.CAT: data $ lsattr C0000000.CAT ------------- C0000000.CAT $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT With those facts in hand (please correct me if I am mis-interpreting the data at hand) what could cause a file system to 'spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time'? What should my next step be? This is on Dell hardware and we ran their diagnostic tools against the hardware and it came back clean.
