• rsync to ONLY keep files in destination that have been removed from source

  We use rsync to copy filesystem contents from one machine to another as a backup. We first run MACHINE-X-MACHINE-Y rsync for a straight backup with the --delete and --delete-excluded switches We also run an internal Rsync between the MACHINE-Y destination, and another folder on MACHINE-Y with either of the delete flags. This maintains a non-destructive copy in the event someone inadvertently deletes a file on MACHINE-X. However, it also has the overhead of being a complete copy of what has already been synchronized. Ideally I want to be able to run the non-destructive rsync in such a way that the destination ONLY receives the deleted files and so avoids unnecessary duplication . Is there any way to do this?

• XDMCP is slow any ideas? (looking for alternative remote desktops)

  I've been used to using RDP on Windows to remote to machines, and I've got an asus eee 701 which I want to use to do some *nix programming on. While the eee is a lovely little machine the screen and keyboard are a little small to use for lots of programming. I've tried using Xming (the free version) to remote login into the eee from my desktop using XDMCP (or even using a ssh session as a straight X11 server and no desktop on the eee) the whole thing seems seriously slow over wifi the initial desktop takes at least 5 seconds to paint (might even be 10 seconds I haven't actually timed it). So my real question is what do other folks use for remote control with a GUI for their *nix boxes? I am finding it hard to believe the performance is so bad over a wifi network (It makes the Mac IIs I used to use a college in 1988 seem fast) or is this just a problem with Xming and using say the Cygwin X11 server would be better.

  I'm getting at least 50 Viagra ads a day and it's driving me insane. I currently have a hosted MS Exchange account and a Gmail account. My Gmail account forwards to my Exchange account. Both of my addresses are used evenly, and it has been really nice to have all of my e-mail end up in my Exchange box. I like replying from one address consistently, which is my Exchange address. Spam sent to my Gmail address is always caught, where spam sent to my Exchange is getting passed straight through to me. I don't want to have two spam filtration systems that have quarantines that I need to check frequently for false positives. Here is my question: Can I setup my MX records such that all e-mail sent to my Exchange address is forwarded to my Gmail account, which will then forward it to my Exchange account? Kind of like using Gmail as the middle man.

• Window 2003 is PHP Limiting my Download Speed?

  Hello, I have window 2003 100mbps server, i have tried using php script such as php indexer, zina pancake.org and others. The php script use to serve download such as images and music songs. I personally have 20mbps internet speed. When i use the php script (download pass thru PHP headers) , it will download at constant speed of 30-40KBps. I have tried different webserver such as apache 1.3, apache 2.2, abyss webserver & lighttpd for windows. The speed while relying on php is same constant 30-40KBps however when i tried direct link/straight from apache, the speed is 1MB/s. Is there any settings in Window 2003 Registry or PHP should i change to make the download speed is more faster when going thru PHP?

• It's possible to use google smtp for sending email from my server?

  Well, I am becoming crazy to let my email deliver to gmail/hotmail from my new ip. Last year, i had no problems with my past ip, but now my emails go straight to the spam folder of gmail and hotmail. I checked with mxtoolbox.com and i am not blacklisted, not an open proxy, rdns is configured the right way, SPF policy is present on the DNS. My spf is v=spf1 a mx ~all But, still, I am filtered. So, I am wondering: since gmail does not accept my emails, it's possible to use gmail smtp server to deliver all mails from my server? AFAIK, it will change all the "from" address, but maybe there is a way to not let it happen?

• Monitoring the wall time of a process on windows?

  Windows Task Manager has the ability to show the current CPU time of any given running process on windows, is there any way (not necessarily through Task Manager) to get the current wall time of a process? An example, let's say I have a script that reliably runs for about 45 minutes. Without adding a progress bar to the script, is there any way to figure out for how long it has been running? The math behind this seems pretty straight forward; WallTime = CurrentWallTime - WallTimeProcessStarted. Likewise, since the math is so simple, is there anyway to get the time that a process was started at?

• Windows 7 to search a network drive

  Is there any way that I can have windows 7 clients be able to go to "start" and type in the name of a file that is located on a network drive? I have read that this is possible through indexing, but to get through the indexing steps I need to make files available offline. This network drive I speak of has about 2tb of files on it. How in the heck can I keep all this straight. I imagine there would be syncing errors everywhere if I were to make all of these files available offline. Not to mention not all files being current due to the large amounts of files. Anyone have suggestions?

• Replacing old server with new but different hostname & same IP

  We have an old server 2000 and lots of users point to it by hostname and by its IP e.g \\server1, we have a new server 2008 R2 with new name serverlocation1 All folders and data have been sync'toy'd from the old server1 across to serverlocation1 each evening, the new server tree is exactly the same on the new server and all perms are correct. We need to make the new server the same IP as the old server1 as too many people access it directly via IP, and to ensure file and folder paths stay ok, anything \\server1\folder\file needs to go to \\newserverlocation1\folder\file etc I can change the old server1 name to server1-old & change IP and assign the old IP to the new server, but how do I force anything coming in for \\server1 to go to the new server and ensure anything referenced to the old server goes onto the new server ? I can CNAME but I need the new server to have the IP of the previous server so not sure if its straight forward etc..... point server1 to newserverlocation1 Then probably change DNS so that the OLD IP points to new hostname..... Any clarification appreciated.

• How do I boot Windows 8 into Safe Mode?

  I have Windows 8 Enterprise x64. It's installed a virtual machine. After trying to update VMWare's guest extension it black screened. After resetting it, now the virtual machine won't boot. It just says "automatic repair couldn't repair your PC" Everything I do ends with an error or it coming back to this screen. If I go to Troubleshoot Advanced Options Start up settings and then go to Safe Mode, all it will do is say "preparing automatic repair" and then "diagnosing your PC" and then will come straight back to the "automatic repair couldn't repair your PC" screen. It's as if it doesn't even attempt to go into safe made. Is there anything else I can do before I reformat?

  I accidentally deleted some files in a prior commit and would like to recover them. How can I do this? I ran this and found exactly what I was looking for: git whatchanged --diff-filter=D At the time I made the commit, I should have committed the new/changed files only and ran a reset --hard then to recover the missing files. I have about 100 files that I need to restore. I don't want to do a straight revert as that will also undo the changes in that commit. Any ideas?

  I copied the following from a post on the Spiceworks forum which remained unanswered: Is there any way to place the Recycle Bin back on the desktop of a Roaming Profile with the Desktop being redirected? I have used Google and can't find a straight forward answer. I am asking for people with experience in this. This is for a Windows XP machine. I saw mention of needing to use a program such as Undelete but I'm hoping that is not the case. Further explanation: I use redirected folders and whenever a user deletes something from their desktop,my documents it doesn't show up in the recycle bin. It doesn't appear in the recycle bin on the server either. Where is this data? I doubt it is permanently deleted. Is there a way to change the recycle bin on the users' desktop to display those files? Thank you!

• Can I use my Belkin router as a repeater?

  I've got a brand new, unopened Belkin N600 DB router (yay 50% off sale), and I can't seem to figure out if I can use it as a repeater. As far as I can tell, it doesn't support DD-WRT or Tomato, but I'm wondering if there may be some way to rig it up to repeat Wifi. Also, I really need to know before I open it, because, being a bit tight on money at the moment, I'll probably sell it if I can't use it as a repeater. Finally, two caveats: I can't use the other wireless router for anything other than broadcasting straight from the modem (parents are paranoid about anything technological). I can't run ethernet to the second router due to the layout of the house. Thanks so much for the help everyone--if I'm being vague, tell me! EDIT: Also, the manual here is pretty useless on this topic as far as I can tell.

• How to send a direccion to the void using the Hosts file and without using 127.0.0.1?

  I have some name address that i want to send straight to the void using the HOSTS file but i don't want to use the 127.0.0.1. How can i do that?. Why?, I want to speed up some proccess but 127.0.0.1 is serving a webserver, so if i use 127.0.0.1 then this process will call my webserver, consuming resources and may be delaying the process.   i was updating my ipod classic tonight when for some stupid reason i checked the box which says "convert higher bit rate to 128 kbps aac". straight away it changed my audio amount from 67gb to 79gb and then started to sync, i stopped it right away as i thought the whole reason was to reduce space not add anymore to it. everytime i try to sync up now it keeps going back to try this same task and i dont know how to stop it apart from the obvious and cancelling the sync but then i cant update my ipod then? anybody got any ideas for me please? thanks in advance.

• How do I set up my home server to go directly to a port other than 80

  I'm using dyndns, a lynksis wt54g router, and tomcat 7 with spring to set up a web server. This is my first time to attempt this. I'm sure this is a very common question, but I don't know enough to find the answer after quite a bit searching. Dyndns is successfully forwarding to my ip. The main problem is, the router admin login is coming up when my url is used. I'm hosting my site on port 8080. I have port forwarding set up for port 8080 but my request times out when I attempt to use my url like this www.myurl1234.com:8080. I don't want users to have to type the port anyway. I also tried changing the management port to 82 and hosting on port 80, but I still get the router admin login when I use my url. Where am I going wrong? Can I set it up so that www.myurl1234.com goes straight to port 8080?

• Can I use static routing to allow me to use my public IP from my LAN?

Currently I have to maintain duplicate entries for remote desktop, for instance. My router doesn't seem to have a NAT loopback option. I have two routers in fact, a cable modem which goes straight to my main router which does wireless. I can add to the static routing tables on each. • Have start menu index applications in places other than program files?

  I love the ability to type any phrase into the start menu, and Windows 7 will bring up relevant executables under Program Files. However, I have a separate folder of my own where I store several portable applications - usually small apps that run straight out of an unzipped folder with little dependency. I have all of these under a specific hard-coded location - "PortableApps", but I would really like to tell the start menu to search this folder as well as Program Files for executables when searching. The search is often clogged because the executables I'm looking for are classified under "Documents" in the search results and buried in other non-related files. • Why can't I access the WebUI of my DNS-323 NAS after a firmware upgrade?

  Hi Everyone, I just bought a D-Link DNS-323 NAS Enclosure, and have run into a problem. I read that the firmware that had shipped with (1.07) did not support 2TB drives, so I downloaded firmware 1.08. Turned on the device for thwe first time and went straight to the WebUI (everything looked/worked fine) Proceeded with the firmware update, completed successfully. Rebooted and I cannot access the WebUI. I can see the NAS connected via my router interface I can also ping the ip adress assigned, but I cannot access the WebUI or find it via D-Link easy search software. I have tried the factory reset button, but that does not seem to be doing anything, the square blue light just keeps flashing from the moment the unit is powered on, whether I press the reset button or not, and the symptoms remain the same... PS. I did/do not have any drives installed yet. Please help?

• Windows Virtual Machine ping reply fails the first few times

  I am running a windows Web Server 2008 virtual machine. When I try to ping it from another windows machine the ping reply comes straight back with 100% success. But when I try to ping it from one of the Linux boxes, the ping reply fails with partial or 100% loss the first couple of time and succeeds the third time onwards. I know it is quite strange but can any one think anything that could be causing it. Could anything in the Windows Domain Security or Firewall be "taking time" to allow responding to the ping request? In fact even the firewall is turned off on the virtual machine.

  Let's get straight to the point. This is my fictive network architecture: My question is: Would it be possible for Laptop B to intercept traffic sent and received by Laptop A? Please note that B only has WiFi access and no physical control over Router B. Furthermore, Router A and B create different wireless networks with different encryption keys.   It seems to me that Amazon obfuscate their pricing somewhat. So if I were to create a "m1.medium" instance and run it say 4 hours a day what would I be charged per month? (assume nothing else needed) You'd think this would be straight forward to answer, but I don't see a clear answer anywhere. This tool: http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/calc5.html Gives: $22.21 If I set it to 1 hour is gives: $5.65 But is this correct? The m1.medium has a Local storage of 410gb... I assume that this is persistent, but is it charged for? In the tool from Amazon this is not implied or suggested or hinted at. Any guidance would be most appreciated!
