• Can I use my old Sony Handycam TRV815 as a web cam?

  Has anyone ever used their old Sony Handycam (or maybe any older hand-held camcorder) as a web cam? As in streaming the live video from the cam to a web server (local or remote/Internet). My TRV815 has a pretty darn good picture quality for its time.. Via USB or Ethernet. It has S-Video but I think that is input. It has RCA out (white/red for audio and yellow for video) and I have used that to display to my TV. I have web cams already but was wondering if I could put this one to use also just for kicks..

• Dual-boot more than two operating systems

  I currently run Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 as a dual-boot system. I need Linux, but Ubuntu freezes at least once a day. So I want to replace it with another distribution like Debian or LMDE. On the other hand I am a little concerned that I'll have troubles working with a less user friendly operating system than Ubuntu. So would it be possible to just scale down the Windows partition and install the next Linux as a third system? Thus, with a "triple-boot system" I could keep Ubuntu until I feel familiar with the new system. Afterwards, I guess, it should be possible to replace the Ubuntu partition by expanding the new system?

• What protocols will/are ISPs use for IPv6 deployment?

  Currently ISPs deal out addresses via DHCP for IPv4 dynamic (single) addresses. What protocol will/are ISPs going to use for IPv6 when they can hand a customer an entire /64 (or /48 if they are nice) block? DHCPv6, RA? For ISPs that support true end-to-end IPv6 will they provide gateway devices (similar to cable modem or true DSL bridges for example) that receive border information for that specific customer? I'm just trying to get an idea of how your common residential service customer will have to configure things in an IPv6 Internet (whenever that comes). Will it be something customers are expected to statically configure on their home wireless router? Today with IPv4 I do it like this: Modem (bridge) passes public IPv4 obtained via DHCPv4 from ISP to second device (wireless router). It in turn has its own DHCPv4 service it provides on the internal lan.

I work in this big IT company(they have and AD environment ofc) and I've seen first hand how nice integration and log-in-from-anywhere(roaming?) profiles can be. So I wanna create the same setup at home, where I have 3 machines. Mostly logging in with the same profile and preserving the settings(things like UAC being off, a few group policies I've customized, things like that). How can I achieve something like this?

• Log off as local "administrator" user, get blank login screen

  I have an imaged lab environment running Windows 7 and attached to a domain. The local Administrator account is enabled for certain maintenance and prep tasks. Every time I logoff from the local Administrator account, it brings me back to the standard Ctrl+Alt+Del login screen. When I press that combination, all the user controls vanish except for the accessibility button down in the left hand corner. The only way I can seem to escape from this is to tap the power button to initiate a shutdown. Windows is up-to-date, and logging off as any other user operates normally. The "hide last user" local security policy option is enabled. Has anyone seen this phenomenon before and how can I stop this from happening?

• Is there a way to import a scheduled task from windows 2003 (.job) to windows 2008 (.xml) ?

  I had some jobs to be moved from the old production server (windows 2003 server standard) to the new machine (windows 2008 server standard), but the new server is unable to read the old .job format, also the import wizard only imports from .xml job files (same version). Obviously I don't want to rebuild all the jobs by hand, but can't find a tool that makes the process a very little easier. I don't trust in Microsoft for this kind of tools, my previously experiences had been to bad (DTS - SSIS). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  Hi my current specs are CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2.66 GHz, Socket 1156 Motherboard: Asus P7P55 LX Motherboard, Socket 1156, 4xDIMM DDR3, 2xPCIe-16, 3xPCI, 2xPCIe-1, 14xUSB2, Audio, 1xATA, 6xSATA, RAID, ATX HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS Hard Disk Drive, 1500GB, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache, SATA-2 RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw F3-12800CL8D-4GBRM, 2x2GB, DDR3-1600, PC3-12800, CL8, DIMM Video: MSI Radeon 5850 R5850-PM2D1G Video Card, 1024MB, DDR5, PCIe-16, DVI, CrossFire, HDMI PSU: Vantec ION2, 620W ATX PSU, SLI Ready, Black Firstly I know it badly needs an SSD, for which I'm thinking of the Samsung 250gb 840 EVO series. The ram could do with another 4GB, for which I am thinking of replacing the 2x2GB for 2x4GB of the same type. My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

• The letter 'W' gets rendered oddly

  It seems that with this particular font (it's one of the Ubuntu fonts; I can't tell which one exactly because Chrome's debugger doesn't tell me which font-family won the CSS battle) the letter 'W' (both cases), at the default zoom level and typically with smaller sizes, will render very oddly: (open the image in a new tab) The right-hand side of the letter is totally wrong. Changing the zoom levels will mitigate (but not eliminate) the issue. Does anyone know how to fix this? It doesn't happen on Firefox or IE so I assume it's not an issue with the font itself.

• Windows 7 won't recognize my second hard drive after reinstall

  I recently suffered a total hardware crash on my windows C: drive. Fortunately, I had a spare disk on hand and set about reinstalling. For some reason, during the install it decided to declare my second windows drive as the booting drive, but once the installation was completed it completely and utterly refuses to acknowledge the filesystem -- I'm not even seeing a drive letter, while it /does/ find the linux partitions on the other two drives (even if it can't read any of them). My first (and most important) question: How can I get windows to re-acknowledge the drive, preferably without losing all the data on it? My second question: How can I tell windows to set up its boot loader on the new C: drive?

Basically I want to monitor a folder and synchronize each change (new files, changed files, deleted files) to another drive. It has to be in real time, so it gets synchronized instantly when a change happens. A one-direction synchronisation is enough. I tried Microsofts SyncToy, but it does only syncing by hand or scheduled. Can this be achieved with Windows 7 itself or does anyone know a freeware application for this?

• How to adjust wallpaper to make it fit the screen, for netbook using window 7 starter?

  I have a netbook, with window 7 starter. I was trying to change the wallpaper, and found this application: John's Background Switcher which said that I can make slide show of themes, I guess it's as you set wallpaper with window 7 ultimate. The default wallpaper was still fine until downloading that application. After trying it, error occurred, I couldnt change the background, so I closed it, but then the default wallpaper changed its size, the central image dropped out of screen, can see aaprt of it on `bottom right hand corner. I tried to adjust the image into center, but it didnt work when i right click on desktop - Graphic option - panel fit - "center image". Anybody can help me? how to adjust it back to normal as original?

• Encryption container for multiple people

  I was just wondering if anyone may have come across a product that would allow for a container based encryption to be used by multiple people, in a Windows Server setup. I wanted to see if there might be something like a truecrypt that could handle being accessed by two accounts? Looking to see if there is a product that would have such properties that would allow only a hand full of users access to the content of the location, but allow for the files to be backed up a normal backup system. That way if a file had to be restored, the container could be redirected to another location for one of the users to get access to it? This would allow for access to be restricted beyond the NTFS and file share permissons

• Command-line tool to search for file names on offline backup drives

  I am looking for an open-source (command-line) tool to register and search all my (backup) drives on a file name level. I want to search for file and folder names preferably written as regular expressions or file glob patterns. The external drives contain just normal HFS and NTFS filesystems. The backups are done via direct file copy. Requirement is that the tool compiles on OS X and works without each of the drives attached, but rather pointing me to the drive in case a drive contains a file with the pattern I searched for. At the moment I use a hand-knit script solution with locate databases, one for each external backup drive, but this is rather cumbersome, because locate itself can accesses only one database at a time and does not contain any management system for all the indices/databases. Are there any other tools out there for this?

• Why would my domain admins turn off UAC? [closed]

  I'm a developer of internal software in our company, I've gotten used to UAC in Win7, I prefer to run with in enabled so that our software works correctly with it enabled. Sysadmins have recently pushed out GPO that turns it off every time we log-in. (So I turn it back on every time I log in.) I can imagine some people are annoyed by it and turn it off, but is that really a good company-wide decision? anyone annoyed by it (local admins) would already have permission to turn it of themselves.. right? On the other hand we don't have to worry creating UAC friendly software if no workstations or servers have it enabled. Is there a good reason for doing this? Other than reducing help-desk calls from users recently upgraded from XP? I can't see the upside of this decision, help me understand.

• Control Windows 8 with a tablet

  It seems much of Windows 8 is based on the idea that it will be running on tablets, and touch screen PCs. I like this, but I don't have a W89 tablet, or a touch PC yet. I'm running W8 on a laptop, and am wondering if there's any way of using my iPad2 as a touch interface with metro? Or another options that'd be nice is if there's a input device similar to Apple's "Magic Trackpad" that would allow me to use hand gestures instead of a mouse cursor when in metro apps. I've seen some cool videos of MS Smart Glass and it would seem that the capabilities are there. But it may just be too early on to do this? I'm not sure.

• How can I move the Windows 7 Preview Pane to the bottom?

  When searching for files in Windows Explorer, I like to use the Preview Pane to determine if it is the file I was looking for. But with the Preview Pane on the right hand side, either the preview is squished and unreadable or I need to make the Preview Pane wider which ends up hiding a lot of search information. Is there a way to move the Preview Pane to the bottom of the screen. I would rather see less lines in the preview and less files in the search results but be able to see (and read) all of what is being shown.

  Does anyone of you know how to perform the following task: Suppose you have two directory trees, which I will call source and target. They may have a very different structure, but could contain many duplicate files. An example would be a structured collection of photographs on one hand (the destination), and just a tmp directory in which you unload everything from your camera on the other (the source). Maybe some of these files are already in the structured directory tree. I would like to rsync from the source to the target, such that only the files from the source that are not in the destination at any location are copied.

  I want to call ESHA Research nutrient REST API. I cannot seem to figure out how to call multiple nutrients using ESHA REST API. So far I am calling the following and only able to retrieve the calories, or protein, or another type of nutrient information. So I was hoping someone had experience in retrieving all the nutrient information with one call. Is this possible? This is how I call to retrieve the TWIX nutrient http://api.esha.com/analysis?apikey=xxxx&fo=urn:uuid:81d268ac-f1dc-4991-98c1-1b4d3a5006da (returns calories, please note the api key is not xxxx but instead a key generated from Esha once you sign up as developer) The return is JSON format. If I want to call fat it would be the following http://api.esha.com/analysis?apikey=xxxx&fo=urn:uuid:81d268ac-f1dc-4991-98c1-1b4d3a5006da&n=urn:uuid:589294dc-3dcc-4b64-be06-c07e7f65c4bd How can I make a call once and get a return of all the nutrients (so Fat, Calories, Carbs, Vitamins, etc..) for a particular food ID?   This I understand: net use P: \\SOME_COMPUTER\SOME_SHARE net use P: \\1.2.3.4\SOME_SHARE (the second argument is a logical share on the given computer) This, I do NOT understand: net use LPT2: IP_1.2.3.4 (where IP_1.2.3.4 is the name of a "port" assigned to a printer; the IP is a valid and responding device, but the full string "IP_1.2.3.4" is not) Can anyone tell me, is there ever a syntax of NET USE that could operate on a printer port like that? I can't get it to work, can't find anything via Google, and am practically in tears. [Sorry if this is cheating, this is basically a re-post of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884235/old-school-windows-2000-printing-or-when-is-a-port-name-a-computer but with the scope narrowed just to the main issue at hand.

• Add Your Gmail Account to Outlook 2010 Using IMAP

  If you’re upgrading from Outlook 2003 to 2010, you might want to use IMAP with your Gmail account to synchronize mail across multiple machines. Using our guide, you will be able to start using it in no time. Enable IMAP in Gmail First log into your Gmail account and open the Settings panel. Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and verify IMAP is enabled and save changes. Next open Outlook 2010, click on the File tab to access the Backstage view. Click on Account Settings and Add and remove accounts or change existing connection settings. In the Account Settings window click on the New button. Enter in your name, email address, and password twice then click Next. Outlook will configure the email server settings, the amount of time it takes will vary. Provided everything goes correctly, the configuration will be successful and you can begin using your account. Manually Configure IMAP Settings If the above instructions don’t work, then we’ll need to manually configure the settings. Again, go into Auto Account Setup and select Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.   Select Internet E-mail – Connect to POP or IMAP server to send and receive e-mail messages. Now we need to manually enter in our settings similar to the following. Under the Server Information section verify the following. Account Type: IMAP Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com Note: If you have a Google Apps account make sure to put the full email address ([email protected]) in the Your Name and User Name fields. Note: If you live outside of the US you might need to use imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com Next, we need to click on the More Settings button… In the Internet E-mail Settings screen that pops up, click on the Outgoing Server tab, and check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Also select the radio button next to Use same settings as my incoming mail server. In the same window click on the Advanced tab and verify the following. Incoming server: 993 Incoming server encrypted connection: SSL Outgoing server encrypted connection TLS Outgoing server: 587 Note: You will need to change the Outgoing server encrypted connection first, otherwise it will default back to port 25. Also, if TLS doesn’t work, we were able to successfully use Auto. Click OK when finished. Now we want to test the settings, before continuing on…it’s just easier that way incase something was entered incorrectly. To make sure the settings are tested, check the box Test Account Settings by clicking the Next button. If you’ve entered everything in correctly, both tasks will be completed successfully and you can close out of the window. and begin using your account via Outlook 2010. You’ll get a final congratulations message you can close out of… And begin using your account via Outlook 2010. Conclusion Using IMAP allows you to synchronize email across multiple machines and devices. The IMAP feature in Gmail is free to use, and this should get you started using it with Outlook 2010. • JavaOne Latin America 2012 is a wrap!

  Third JavaOne in Latin America (2010, 2011) is now a wrap! Like last year, the event started with a Geek Bike Ride. I could not attend the bike ride because of pre-planned activities but heard lots of good comments about it afterwards. This is a great way to engage with JavaOne attendees in an informal setting. I highly recommend you joining next time! JavaOne Blog provides a a great coverage for the opening keynotes. I talked about all the great set of functionality that is coming in the Java EE 7 Platform. Also shared the details on how Java EE 7 JSRs are willing to take help from the Adopt-a-JSR program. glassfish.org/adoptajsr bridges the gap between JUGs willing to participate and looking for areas on where to help. The different specification leads have identified areas on where they are looking for feedback. So if you are JUG is interested in picking a JSR, I recommend to take a look at glassfish.org/adoptajsr and jump on the bandwagon. The main attraction for the Tuesday evening was the GlassFish Party. The party was packed with Latin American JUG leaders, execs from Oracle, and local community members. Free flowing food and beer/caipirinhas acted as great lubricant for great conversations. Some of them were considering the migration from Spring -> Java EE 6 and replacing their primary app server with GlassFish. Locaweb, a local hosting provider sponsored a round of beer at the party as well. They are planning to come with Java EE hosting next year and GlassFish would be a logical choice for them ;) I heard lots of positive feedback about the party afterwards. The talk was delivered in the biggest hall and had about 200 attendees. Also spent a lot of time talking to folks at the OTN Lounge. The JUG leaders appreciation dinner in the evening had its usual share of fun. Day 3 started with a session on "Building HTML5 WebSocket Apps in Java". The slides are now available: The room was packed with about 150 attendees and there was good interaction in the room as well. A collaborative whiteboard built using WebSocket was very well received. The following tweets made it more worthwhile: A WebSocket speek, by @ArunGupta, was worth every hour lost in transit. #JavaOneBrasil2012, #JavaOneBr @arungupta awesome presentation about WebSockets :) The session was immediately followed by the hands-on lab "Developing JAX-RS Web Applications Utilizing Server-Sent Events and WebSocket". The lab covers JAX-RS 2.0, Jersey-specific features such as Server-Sent Events, and a WebSocket endpoint using JSR 356. The complete self-paced lab guide can be downloaded from here. The lab was planned for 2 hours but several folks finished the entire exercise in about 75 mins. The wonderfully written lab material and an added incentive of Java EE 6 Pocket Guide did the trick ;-) I also spoke at "The Java Community Process: How You Can Make a Positive Difference". It was really great to see several JUG leaders talking about Adopt-a-JSR program and other activities that attendees can do to participate in the JCP. I shared details about Adopt a Java EE 7 JSR as well.
