• Cannot connect to Windows SBS Essentials 2011

  Using the Launchpad from the Mac, trying to connect to Server Essentials 2011, no one is able to actually log in. The little login wheel keeps spinning and spinning. Anyone have any ideas what might be keeping us from logging in? On the mac side, we are using 10.6 and 10.7, but both are exhibiting the same problem. I also cannot connect to the server by remote desktop connection within the local network. HELP!

• How big of a bandwidth hog is Internet radio?

  I was thinking about logging into Pandora at work like I do at home, but I'm concerned about sucking up all of the available bandwidth on the network with something that's not strictly work-related. I don't have a thorough technical understanding of how streaming content like Internet radio is delivered, so I don't really know how to measure the impact. Can anyone offer any perspective on how much bandwidth Internet radio consumes relative to normal Internet browsing? Is there any way to measure how much I'm using for a specific site like Pandora?

• Why doesn't my Administrator account have access privileges?

  We are running windows server 2003.I log in as Administrator but I don't have any access rights. I tried to create a new Administrator account but when logging into that one I still face the same issue. Is there a problem with the Group Administrators? If so is there a way to restore it's default settings? Note: This problem started after I uninstalled the Active directory role from the server. Thanks in advance.

  This started a few weeks ago and we thought it was a virus so we checked every computer and all though 50%(Yeah, that's right) were infected once they were cleaned the problem didn't go away. It's really frustrating so I want to figure it out so I need suggestions on how to find the culprit. I think the router has logging but it logs everyone so it's hard to tell and I might be able to setup a proxy but again it's hard to tell when and what to monitor. What are your suggestions?

• Group Policy fault - Students force

  Work at a school and we've got a scenario. We block F8 on all computers so students cannot access Safe Mode to bypass Group Policy... But students are logging into their accounts using AD, and they are turning them off half way through. Then they are claiming that when they login next time, they have Local Administrator accounts. Is this right, but we have blocked F8 and Startup repair, so wondering how they actually did it. Cheers Richard

• How do I force deletion of a file on Windows 7?

  Hello all. I opened a file using Vim from MinGW's MSYS on Windows 7, and it crashed, and it's left behind a .filename.swp file which I cannot delete! I'm in the local admin group, and I tried following this, in an administrator command propmpt, and that didn't work. Nor did logging on as the local admin and performing the same actions. Any suggestions?

• Is there a simple way to daemon-ify a simple task?

  I ssh into a server than start a job (for instance rsync), then I just want to be able to log out from the server and let the job run its course. But if I just do rsync ... & I think it's still connected to the tty in some way, and that the job dies when the tty goes away when logging out. Is there any (easy) way to disconnect the process from the tty to be able to log out without the process terminating?

• Change Logon DPI setting in Windows 8.1

  I love how M$ keeps making decisions for me about how I want my desktop to look. Now they have added per-user dpi settings. The problem this has created is that there is no adjustable dpi setting for the Lock/Logon screen. Let me explain. you can change the dpi setting to be the same across all displays and this does affect the icons and font on the lock/logon screen. However it does not affect any app/program that can run on the lock/logon screen. Ex. I use a 44" flat screen tv for my monitor on my desktop. Big enough for me to sit in my recliner and use my comp. But I don't have a wireless keyboard. And it sucks having the wire from the keyboard running across the floor. Plus I really don't want to keep a keyboard next to me. So I use the on screen keyboard for logging in and quick typing (search, web address, etc.) So the problem is that with the new dpi setup my on screen keyboard takes up nearly half the screen. Does M$ think we are all blind? Oh no I remember they think desktops should look like tablets and phones. I tried looking through the registry to see if I could find a setting for it. In the key HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop there is a string value named "LogicalDPIOverride" with a value of -1. I have a feeling this is where I can fix the issue. I tried changing the value to 0 and to 1 with no change in the result. Instead I noticed that after logging out and back in the -1 value was back in the registry. So now M$ has also added a way for us to not be able to change a setting in the registry. They are making it harder and harder for us power users to be able to do anything with the settings in windows. Soon we will all have the same exact Windows with absolutely no customization. ok sorry for the quick rant. The real question here is. How can I change this defualt dpi crap? Can I use the LogPixels string that worked for dpi in Windows 7? I can delete the table, it's not very important, but I can't get into the server. Is there anyway to delete that database from the file system or without logging into MySQL? HELP! • Remote Program (via ssh) suspends when leaving client computer

  I'm working with MATLAB on a remote computer logging in via ssh -X remotepc and running matlab like matlab &. When I start a long-running process and leave the computer, it seems to suspend the process (after like 30mins being away) such that there is nearly no progress over night. As soon as I come back and wake up the client, the remote process continues with the calculation. I can see this from the load-average values (uptime) Why is that and how can I change this behaviour?

Is this the way to do it, or should I create a users group and add priveliges to the users in that group? • Leave bash script running on remote terminal while not logged in?

  I'm searching for something like: tcpdump -p PID # But tcpdump does not know the PID or lsof -i --continuous # But lsof just runs and exits, no «live logging» to log which connections an application opens. In my case, I want to find out to which port git connects when committing. This happens in a fraction of a second, so I cannot use lsof. If there is a lot of traffic, filtering by PID or process name would be useful.

• ubuntu: starting program with sudo on boot

  I am trying to start xampp when the ubuntu starts on ubuntu 9.10. I tried going to system-preferences-startup applications adding it there, but it didn't work. I surmised it was because it needs to be started as root. I know you can make a startup script some how, but I'm not sure how to do it. How can I make it start xampp when the computer boots, even without logging in? FYI, the command for starting it is sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
