• Alternative to Game State System?

  As far as I can tell, most games have some sort of "game state system" which switches between the different game states; these might be things like "Intro", "MainMenu", "CharacterSelect", "Loading", and "Game". On the one hand, it totally makes sense to separate these into a state system. After all, they are disparate and would otherwise need to be in a large switch statement, which is obviously messy; and they certainly are well represented by a state system. But at the same time, I look at the "Game" state and wonder if there's something wrong about this state system approach. Because it's like the elephant in the room; it's HUGE and obvious but nobody questions the game state system approach. It seems silly to me that "Game" is put on the same level as "Main Menu". Yet there isn't a way to break up the "Game" state. Is a game state system the best way to go? Is there some different, better technique to managing, well, the "game state"? Is it okay to have an intro state which draws a movie and listens for enter, and then a loading state which loops on the resource manager, and then the game state which does practically everything? Doesn't this seem sort of unbalanced to you, too? Am I missing something?

• Can .htaccess slow down a site?

  I'm working with a client on an e-commerce website. I implemented clean URLs using .htaccess. I also used .htaccess to solve canonical issues such as redirecting www to non-www and removing index.php from the URL. The website recently began to slow down dramatically, sometimes not even loading. The site is hosted on GoDaddy, and when the client called GoDaddy they told him it was the .htaccess file slowing down the website. I find this highly unlikely because of my past experiences, but I'm not 100% sure. My thinking is that the client's website is most likely on a shared server with a busy neighborhood, thus slowing down the site. It's not always slow, but rather sporadic throughout the day, loading fast at some points and slow at other points in time. Can the .htaccess file slow down a website to a crawl? If so, are there better ways to solve these problems with different rewrite rules and such? • Can't boot Windows Xp after intalling Ubuntu 12.04

  Here's the situation. I installed Ubuntu using the along side option. Everything went ok. When I restarted I went strait to Ubuntu and it worked beautifully. When I restarted and tried to enter windows, the loading screen appeared, and after 3 -4 seconds it restarted again. No error, no cursor waiting, no nothing. I looked on the internet for help and found several resources. I tried first lilo since it seemes that many people had they're issues solved with it. After lilo neither ubuntu nor Windows would start. I installed and used bootinfoscript. The RESULTS.txt can be seen below https://www.dropbox.com/sh/r3luoa672qe73uq/Mob13HhNiB After that I looked at Boot-Repair I did as instructed here Can't boot XP after Ubuntu Installation, how to fix? ,meaning I redid the mbr of my Ubuntu install using a generic mbr. with no success. The results of boot-repair are in the first link. Now when I restart my computer I don't even get the windows loading screen, just Missing operating system Missing operation system Operating system not found that's it. I did not use the fixboot or fixmbr option because I don't have a windows cd cabable of seeing my hdd drivers. The usual XP windows setup tells me that I have no hdd. Please help, I don't know what to to next. This is my first time with Ubuntu or any Linux OS.

• Reboot failure after upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS

  I bought our computer from Freegeeks with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 on Thursday November 10. I have an ASUS P4P800SE with dual Intel P4@3GHZ. Installation messages were: - Error loading Nautilus config info - Replaced customied /etc/login.defs - Replaced customized /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf - 189 packages removed - WARNING: Failed to read mirror file When I rebooted, the usual ASUS screen appeared, then "Loading GRUB" then "starting Up..." then "starting Up..." again then a blank screen (the moniter went dormant). I rebooted, started GRUB and selected: version 10.04.3 LTS kernel 2.6.32-35 generic I got the same results. I rebooted, started GRUB and selected: kernel 2.6.24-29 generic Here's what was displayed: udevd [875]: error getting socket: Invalid argument libudev:udev_monitor_new_from_netlink: error getting socket: Invalid argument Segmentation fault **Gave up waiting for root device** Common problems - Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) - Check root delay - check root - Missing modules (cat/pro/modules; **Alert! /dev/disk/by_vvid/c59c6361 etc... does not exist. Dropping to a shell.** Then Busybox v1.13.3 started with the following prompt (?) (initramfs) _ But my typing did not appear on the screen. It appears the hard drive cannot be found. • Cannot boot computer, help please :(

  Ok so here is more descriptions, I REALLY NEED HELP! I installed Ubuntu on a disk (unsure of v. I can't check.. Computer is broke :/ ) I then burned the disk I restarted computer pressed f12 blah blah it came up, I pressed enter for English, I plugged an Ethernet card in for better connection, and then started the installation.... I did the basics, and I entered a host name, and a user name and pass all that, when it came to partition page, I presse enter for no and then it went back to the installation page, I pressed install again, and it brought me back, so I selected yes , it loaded an it asked what software to instal I selected sh ( it was first option and I didn't know which to do ) so after everything finished loading, my disk was ejected the process finish, I run my computer and it opens up in log in page on cmd script I didn't know it, so I ran disk again makin a user and pass to remember.... Going back to login thing I logged in, and all it did was say my username... I didn't know what to do from there, I looked online found nothing but grub stuff, so I went to "Advanced Ubuntu options" and then "(Recovery Mode) and went to update grub... In middle o loading it asked to continue (Y/n) I typed Y and it finished, it went back to the options located in (Recovery Mode) and I closed it, and it loaded... And then showed up in another script screen, saying a paragraph on top, and on left side ( where login: would be located etc. ) it says "Grub" and I don't know what to type, if I turn off computer and turn back on it just goes straight to that again... PLEASE HELP:(

• Not booting from USB or CD (SYSLINUX Message)

  I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get. SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al With the CD it will start booting it but somewhere loading it up, the dots turn all orange and stay that way and my CD drive turns quiet. Oh and some more info the images work because I tried loading them up on another pc and it worked just fine. I manage to get the CD to boot I just had to let me pc boot up first then insert the CD and have it boot the CD then. Once I get done installing ubuntu it works fine but I have to leave the PC on 24/7 for if I turn it off the PC will freeze 5-10 seconds after booting back up no matter how I install it.

What I am trying to do is add a Start Screen before actually loading the game. I have a create function that adds all the game elements to the stage: override public function create():void // all game elements { How can I add this pre-load Start Screen? I'm not sure if I have to add in the code to this create function or somewhere else and what code to actually add. Eventually I would also like to add saving, loading, options and upgrades too. So any advice with that would be great. • Collision planes confusion

  I'm following this tutorial by thecplusplusguy and in the linked video he explain that for example for the world basement and walls we need to create the actual rendered (shown to the player) walls and then duplicate them, place them in the same coordinates as the rendered walls and call them collision (by defining their material to collision). Then it defines in the Object loader function that those objects with material == collision are collision planes and should not be rendered but just used to check collision. Now I'm pretty confused. Why would we add this kind of complexity to a problem that can easily be solved by a simple loadObject(string plane_object, bool check_collision);: Creating only the walls object (by loading .obj file in plane_object) Define them also as collision planes whenever the check_collision is set to true In this case we have lowered the complexity of his method and make it more flexible and faster to develop (faster because we don't always have to make a copy for each plane and flexible because we don't hardcode the Object loader). The only case in which this method could not work is when we need hidden collision planes, and for that we could modify the loadObject() function like this: loadObject(string plane_object, bool check_collision = true, bool hide_object = false); Creating only the walls object (by loading .obj file in plane_object) Define them also as collision planes whenever the check_collision is set to true And add the ability to actually show the object or hide it based on hide_object. • Pandaboard crash on startup or freeze after minutes

  I just received my Pandaboard ES (rev B) and I am having trouble after installing ubuntu-omap4-addons. Once I copied the image ubuntu-12.04-preinstalled-desktop-armhf+omap4.img on my sd card and boot the pandaboard with it, I run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiomap-dev/release sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras At the end of the installation of ubuntu-omap4-extras, Ubuntu tells me that a problem occurs when the console displays: ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Clicking on "report the problem" tell me that the problem concerns pvr-omap4-dkms. I read somewhere that this can happen and it is better to reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms. Which I am doing by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms I reboot. Then the board has sometimes difficulties to start Ubuntu: it freezes during the loading page, only action I can do is unplugging the board to start it again. Some other times, Ubuntu load successfully but then freeze at another random time, in the range 20 - 40 minutes. • Internet slow on one router only [the problem only in Ubuntu] [on hold]

  Internet works perfectly on every other router, but browsing sucks at home (slow browsing and slow loading times). I changed DNS servers to 8.8.0.0, still doesn't help. And funnily, download speed is extremely high on this network (meaning torrents for example), but using browsers and loading websites is extremely slow (only on this network). Do I need to change something in router settings or what can I try? By the way, I use wired connection to router. EDIT: There's no problems when using Windows. • Why doesn't unity show icons or panel after installing numix theme?

  I'm a beginner to Ubuntu/Linux and I have a problem: Unity is not loading! When I choose Unity in the log-in screen, I get notifications and I can see the mouse, but that's it. I have Ubuntu 14.04 installed, along with Bumblebee/Primus. I had no issues whatsoever, until I decided to try the numix-theme and the numix icon pack. I added the PPA and installed it, but when I logged off and logged back on, nothing showed up. I panicked, and in tty1, I purged numix-* but that did not solve the issue. To get by day-to-day use, I installed gnome-flashback, and among those environments, only the metacity one works. (The compiz one does not.) I've tried installing the unity-tweak-tool to reset unit, installing dconf and doing: dconf reset -f /org/compiz/ but that didn't work either. One site even told me to delete /org/compiz/, but that did not resolve the issue. When I checked ccsm, the Unity plugin had a check to it. I also tried with Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears, but it gets stuck on "loading icons". Any help will be awesome!

  What is runtime optionality? Runtime optionality means writing and packaging your code in such a way that all of the features are available at runtime, but aren't loaded and used if the feature isn't used. The code is separate, and you can even remove the code to save persistent storage if you know the feature will not be used. In native programming terms, it's splitting your application into separate shared libraries so you only have to load what you're using, which means it only impacts volatile memory when enabled at runtime. All the functionality is there, but if it's not used at runtime, it's not loaded. A good example of this in Java is JVMTI, Java's Virtual Machine Tool Interface. On smaller, embedded platforms, these libraries may not be there. If the libraries are not there, there's no effect on the runtime as long as you don't try to use the JVMTI features. There is a trade-off between size/performance and flexibility here. Putting code in separate libraries means loading that code will take longer and it will typically take up more persistent space. However, if the code is rarely used, you can save volatile memory by including it in a separate library. You can also use this method in Java by putting rarely-used code into one or more separate JAR's. Loading a JAR and parsing it takes CPU cycles and volatile memory. Putting all of your application's code into a single JAR means more processing for that JAR. Consider putting rarely-used code in a separate library/JAR.

• How to get Nvidia graphics working on Sony Z laptop?

  I have an older Sony VAIO Z 590 laptop with switchable graphics between Intel and Nvidia GeForce 9300M. It is NOT Optimus. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works, but it's using Unity 2D with the Intel drivers. I've tried loading the Nvidia drivers from "Additional Drivers", but it says "this driver is activated but not currently in use". When I run "nvidia-settings", an error window pops up to say "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X drivers." "lspci" shows both graphics cards. Let me know if I should add more info. How do I get the Nvidia graphics and Unity 3D working? • Differentiating between user script input formats

  I have a .NET project at work that provides a couple of (Iron)Python scripts to the customers, to allow them to customize the output of the program. The application generates code for certain machines, and supports a couple of different formats. Until recently, we only provided a script for one format. We're expanding upon that to include support for the others. If the user is using a script, they select their input script before generating the output code. A script designed for Format1 output is going to cause errors if they're trying to generate Format2 output. I need to deal with this. One option would just be to let the customers use common sense, and if they load the wrong script it will just fail, or worse, produce inaccurate data. I'm inclined to provide a little more protection than that. At the moment I'm considering putting a shebang-style comment line at the top of the script, ala: # OUTPUT - Format1 If the user tries to run a Format2 process with a Format1 script, it will warn them. Alternatively I could create different file extensions for the input scripts that vary by type. The file-type comment approach helps prevent the script from actually loading improperly, at the cost of failing to warn the user until they've already selected it, via a dialog box. Using different file extensions would allow me to cut down on visual clutter when providing a File Dialog, but doesn't actually stop them from loading the wrong script. So I'm really not sure if the right approach is to just leave it alone, or provide some safeguards.
