• BUILD 2013 Sessions&ndash;Building Great Windows Phone UI in XAML

Shawn started out giving us a set of bad design/good design examples.  They very effectively showed how good design gives a sense of professionalism to your app that could determine if your wonderful idea actually makes money is DOA. I won’t go over all his points since you will be able to get the session online, but a few of his checklist points included design from the beginning instead of as an afterthought, not being afraid to leave white space and making sure your application elegantly supports both landscape and portrait modes.  The many gems make this a must watch for any developers who struggle with visual design. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013,Windows Phone,XAML,Design

• JSR 360 and JSR 361: A Big Leap for Java ME 8

  It might have gone unnoticed to some, but Java ME took a big leap forward a couple of weeks ago with the filing of two new JSRs: JSR 360: “Connected Limited Device Configuration 8″ (aka CLDC 8) JSR 361: “Java ME Embedded Profile” (aka ME EP) Together, these two JSRs will significantly update, enhance, and modernize the Java ME platform, and specifically small embedded Java, with a host of new features and functionality. JSR 360 – Connected Limited Device Configuration 8 CLDC 8 is based on JSR 139 (CLDC 1.1) and updates the core Java ME VM, language support, libraries, and features to be aligned with Java SE 8. This will include: VM updated to comply with the JVM language specification version 2 Support for SE 7/8 language features like Generics, Assertions, Annotations, Try-with-Resources, and more New libraries such as Collections, NIO subset, Logging API subset A consolidated and enhanced Generic Connection Framework for multi-protocol I/O With CLDC 8, Java ME and Java SE are entering their next phase of alignment – making Java the only technology today that truly scales application development, code re-use, and tooling across the whole range of IT platforms, from small embedded to large enterprise. • Transparent Technology from Amazon

  Amazon has been making some interesting moves again, this time in the augmented humanity area.  Augmented humanity is about helping humans overcome their shortcomings using technology.  Putting a powerful smartphone in your pocket helps you in many ways like navigating streets, communicating with far off friends, and accessing information.  But the interface for smartphones is somewhat limiting and unnatural, so companies have been looking for ways to make the technology more transparent and therefore easier to use. When Apple helped us drop the stylus, we took a giant leap forward in simplicity.  Using touchscreens with intuitive gestures was part of the iPhone's original appeal.  People don't want to know that technology is there -- they just want the benefits.  So what's the next leap beyond the touchscreen to make smartphones even easier to use? Two natural ways we interact with the world around us is by using sight and voice.  Google and Apple have been using both in their mobile platforms for limited uses cases.  Nobody actually wants to type a text message, so why not just speak it?  Any if you want more information about a book, why not just snap a picture of the cover?  That's much more accurate than trying to key the title and/or author. So what's Amazon been doing?  First, Amazon released a new iPhone app called Flow that allows iPhone users to see information about products in context.  Yes, its an augmented reality app that uses the phone's camera to view products, and overlays data about the products on the screen.  For the most part it requires the barcode to be visible to correctly identify the product, but I believe it can also recognize certain logos as well.  Download the app and try it out but don't expect perfection.  Its good enough to demonstrate the concept, but its far from accurate enough.  (MobileBeat did a pretty good review.)  Extrapolate to the future and we might just have a heads-up display in our eyeglasses. The second interesting area is voice response, for which Siri is getting lots of attention.  Amazon may have purchased a voice recognition company called Yap, although the deal is not confirmed.  But it would make perfect sense, especially with the Kindle Fire in Amazon's lineup. I believe over the next 3-5 years the way in which we interact with smartphones will mature, and they will become more transparent yet more important to our daily lives.  This will, of course, impact the way we shop, making information more readily accessible than it already is.  Amazon seems to be positioning itself to be at the forefront of this trend, so we should be watching them carefully.

  Hey guys I am creating a game using Corona SDK and so coding it in Lua. So there are 2 separate functions, To translate the hit objects and change their color when they are tapped The link below is the code I am using to for the first function http://developer.anscamobile.com/sample-code/fishies Spawn objects that will hit the translating objects on collision. Alos on collision the spawned object disappears and the translating object bears a color(indicating the collision). In addition the size of this spawned object is dependent on i/p volume level. • App Stores&ndash;In All Things, Its Quality Over Quantity

  Everybody has an opinion about Windows 8. People love it, people hate it, people are meh about it, people are apparently buying it from Microsoft stores in NYC as if it was water before a natural disaster…if there’s one thing that Microsoft product launches do well, its the ability to bring out strong emotional responses. Over at eweek.com, Don Reisinger wrote about 5 good and bad things about Windows 8. Yes, another opinion piece on WIndows 8. I figured since this one had good and bad it might be worthwhile to read. I then came across #10 on his list, and figured “What the hell…might as well post a bit of a rant on Windows 8 myself!” Here’s #10: 10. Bad: Too few apps Unfortunately, Microsoft wasn’t able to get too many developers to start producing applications for its Windows 8 Store. Microsoft hasn’t yet released official numbers, but some have said that the marketplace has less than 8,000 programs. Considering Apple’s App Store has 100 times that, it’s about time Microsoft starts leaning on developers to get more programs into its store. Believe me, Microsoft *has* been leaning on developers to get apps into the store. I’ve been asked at least 5 or 6 times from 5 or 6 different friends at Microsoft about whether I was going to write a Windows 8 app. I think Microsoft felt they had to try and address the number of apps available in their marketplace, since some people (like Don) would draw comparisons to the number of apps in the Apple marketplace. I feel for Microsoft in this, since the number of apps in a marketplace are an empty stat. Quality of Quantity I have an iPad that my family (wife, 10yo daughter, 3yo daughter) use. We all have our own apps installed on it. In addition, my wife has an iPhone 4S that she also installs apps on. As someone who gets asked by his kids often whether they can buy/download an app, the vast majority of the vast catalogue of iOS marketplace apps are crap! Do you realize how many “free” games are out there, only to really be not-free because you have to purchase in-game content to make the game actually playable? And how about searching – with such a vast array of apps and such high numbers of craptastic ones, trying to find something is incredibly difficult and can be frustrating. I would rather see that Microsoft has 8000 high quality apps in their store at launch, instead of 800000 that were mostly junk. Too Few Apps?! And seriously, 8000 is not a small number. How many iOS apps have I actually bought between the iPad and iPhone? I’ll be generous and say 30…heck, let’s round it up to 40. It’s not like I have 10,000 apps installed on my iPad, nor will that ever happen! So if people have, at the *launch* of a new platform ecosystem, EIGHT THOUSAND apps to choose from, I don’t see that as a fail at all! It should be noted that most of the most common apps (Netflix, Skype, etc.) are available for Windows 8 at launch – I guess I’ll have to wait a few weeks for My Pony Ranch and all its clones to start showing up; pity. Let’s Check Back in a Year So look, let’s check back in a year’s time and see what the app store looks like. My hope is that Microsoft doesn’t continue to push quantity over quality. Even knowing the optics that # of apps in the store carries and the pressure to catch Apple and Android marketplaces, I hope Microsoft avoids the scenario where there’s a good percentage of apps in the Windows Store that are utter rubbish and finding the gems will be cumbersome. But if that happens, we can thank guys like Dan who raised the false issue of app count at the launch for it.

• Nokia 6020 can't connect to PC ?

  I have installed PC suite 7.1 and cable CA-42 and trying to connect the mobile as a modem to send and receive sms but the mobile is not connecting with the pc. I have installed the nokia 6020 modem driver. I am running windows XP 64-bit operation system. While i connect phone to a USB port it prompts new hardware found and go for installation of required software but installation of new hardware getting failed.

There were some extremely hot contests for many of this year's awards - and all very deserving winners.  The entries have demonstrated beyond doubt that retailers have striven to push their standards up yet again in all areas over the past year.  The judging panel includes some of the most prestigious names in the retail industry - to impress the panel enough to win an award is a substantial achievement.  This year the panel included the likes of Andy Clarke - Chief Executive of ASDA Group; Mark Newton Jones - CEO of Shop Direct Group; Richard Pennycook - the finance director at Morrisons; Rob Templeman - Chief Executive of Debenhams; and Stephen Sunnucks - the president of Gap Europe.  These are retail veterans  who have each helped to shape the British High Street over the last decade.  It was great to chat with many of them in the Oracle VIP area last night.  For me, last night's highlight was honouring both Sir Stuart Rose and Sir Terry Leahy for their contributions to the retail industry.  Both have set the standards in retailing over the last twenty years and taken their respective businesses from strength to strength, demonstrating that there is always a need for innovation even in larger businesses, and that a business has to adapt quickly to new technology in order to stay competitive.  Sir Terry Leahy's retirement this year marks the end of an era of global expansion for the Tesco group and a milestone in the progression of British retail.  Sir Terry has helped steer Tesco through nearly 20 years of change, with 14 years as Chief Executive.  During this time he led the drive for international expansion and an aggressive campaign to increase market share.  He has led the way for High Street retailers in adapting to the rise of internet retailing and nurtured a very successful home delivery service.  More recently he has pioneered the notion of cross-channel retailing with the introduction of Tesco apps for the iPhone and Android mobile phones allowing customers to scan barcodes of items to add to a shopping list which they can then either refer to in store or order for delivery.  John Lewis Partnership was a very deserving winner of The Oracle Retailer of the Year award for their overall dedication to excellent retailing practices.  The business was also named the American Express Marketing/Advertising Campaign of the Year award for their memorable 'Never Knowingly Undersold' advert series, which included a very successful viral video and radio campaign with Fyfe Dangerfield's cover of Billy Joel's 'She's Always a Woman' used for the adverts.  Store Design of the Year was another exciting category with Topshop taking the accolade for its flagship Oxford Street store in London, which combines boutique concession-style stalls with high fashion displays and exclusive collections from leading designers.  The store even has its own hairdressers and food hall, making it a truly all-inclusive fashion retail experience and a global landmark for any self-respecting international fashion shopper. • How can I create a short cut to a directory on a Windows Phone device?

  When I plug in my Windows mobile it appears in My Computer as a portable device but the data I need regular access to is many sub directories in. Is it possible to create a shortcut or access a path on a mobile device directly? When I open the properties of the folder I want it says the location starts with "Computer\Name of Phone\Phone\". The problem is using that as a path to navigate straight to the files doesn't work. Thanks for your help.

• iOS 5 New Features vs Android

  Browsing through the iOS 5 features list, I can’t help but notice a lot of it is catch up. Having owned both an iPhone and an Android for a considerable amount of time, I figured I would jot down my opinions. Notification Center – Completely ripped off from Android but looks good and is a much needed addition iMessage – This is very interesting as most people who would think it’s cool, probably really wouldn’t understand the significance.  Basically, Apple is adding an IM application to iOS.  Now iPhone / iPad users can sit around messaging each other how cool it is like Crackberry users circa 2003.  I guess the only real improvement over MMS is that you can easily setup groups, see when each other are typing, and don’t incur text messaging charges; at the expense of leaving your non-iOS buddies out (who wants to talk to those losers anyways?). Newstand – An app update and not an OS one (Apple typically doesn’t make distinctions).  It all seems like stuff my current Nook stuff will do.  Note: I did look to compare prices but it seems that information is not available without downloading iTunes.  lame. Reminders – TODO lists are ho hum, but the ability to have reminders when you arrive or leave a position is pretty cool. Twitter integration – The fact that the best Apple can come up with is ‘one at a timing’ online service integration is laughable at best. Camera – Can control it from the lock screen.  Now you’ll have tons of pocket lint photos in your iCloud to go along with the wicked shot of that cheetah that just unexpectedly ran by your apartment. Photos – Speaking of iCloud, all of your devices photos will be synced through it.  That’s cool I guess, not sure if Android will do the same. Safari – What?  You haven’t been reading rss feeds on your device this whole time?  Something tells me you aren’t about to start. PC Free – Finely Apple untethers the iPhone.  What took them so long? Game Center – This should be an interesting service.  Attention Apple fanboys immediately forget how they are blatantly copying Microsoft achievements (at least rename them). Wifi Sync – Just couldn’t cut the cord completely could they?  For what it’s worth, the Zune has been doing this for 5 years now. All in all a pretty big update.  Mostly iCloud.  Mostly keeping up the mobile status quo.  As an Android user, I can’t say there is anything I am envious of.

• Is the Intel Core i5 mobile processor better than the Intel Core i7 mobile processor?

  I'm shopping for a new laptop from Dell (going to install Ubuntu on it) and I'm currently trying to sort out which processor I want. Based purely on the clock speed, it would seem that the core i5 is better than the core i7. The Intel® Core™ i5-430M has a 2.26GHz clock speed, while the Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor only has a 1.6GHz clock speed. Would this not indicate that the i5 is faster than the i7?

  I have bought a domain from 123-reg.co.uk and have successfully pointed it to the IP Address of my Linode VPS so that going to the domain serves up the pages from the Apache server running on the VPS. The instructions I followed to do this are : Now, I am trying to get the domain's mail handled by Google Apps for Business. I have tried updating the MX records at Linode following this tutorial : http://library.linode.com/email/google-mail And also followed the instructions to update the MX Records in 123-reg's control panel : I am slightly confused now. Where should I be adding the MX records? In my domain registrar's control panel or in Linode's VPS? Both have options to update the MX records.

• Intel P6100 CPU and Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset

  I have an Asus K52F-BBR5 notebook that uses an Intel P6100 ( 2GHZ 15x multiplier) and HM55 Express Chipset. I'm looking to replace it's 3GB with 8GB. The Crucial database seems to indicate that a PC3-8500 CAS 7 and PC3-10666 CAS 9 will both work. I'm not up to date on the latest DDR3 nomencalature and I'm wondering which would provide better performance. The price difference is negligible. Drawing on past experiences from many many years ago I could make an argument for either based on sync/async bus speed arguments and CAS latency differences but the truth is I don't know enough about the HM55 chipset to know which would be the correct choice. Does anyone know the answer or point me to information that would help me make the choice? I'm pretty sure the performance difference will be somewhat negligible also but still I'd like to make the optimal choice.

• Have to enter google sites through second-level domain

  I'm having the same problem as this guy. I own two domains hosted on google sites, mydomain.com and mydomain.net. When I go to mydomain.com, it redirects me to the site located at www.mydomain.com (this is the desired behavior). This used to also work on mydomain.net, but now when I go to mydomain.net, I get a Google 404. To see the content, I have to go to www.mydomain.net. As far as I can tell, the DNS settings and Google apps settings for both domains are identical. Does anybody have any idea about what could be happening?

  I have a website that let's users create a subdomain app like this: https://subdomain.mydomain.com I want them to be able to have the app appear as if it's on their site, like this: https://myapp.theirdomain.com or maybe https://theirdomain.com/myapp/ I'm using Heroku and was wondering if this is realistic and how the ssl certificate would be done such that it worked on both domains? If not, can I get it at least working on their domain?

• Low framerate on background apps

  My problem is that when a game is running in the foreground, in Full Screen mode, any applications on my second monitor (such as youtube videos, videos, not app specific) drop their frame-rate to about 2-3 FPS. It seems like some sort of power management option that I can't track down. As far as I can tell, it's not due to the GPU not being able to keep up. For instance, my PC can play League of Legends at about 280FPS when the framerate is uncapped. • Script Editor in Snow Leopard painfully slow after adding apps to Library

  I have four different Macs that I use from time to time, and on each of them I notice a constant: adding more items to AppleScript Editor's Library window slows performance of mundane operations (opening a dictionary, switching between Library window and editor window, scrolling in the Library window, etc). In Leopard, I noticed little to no latency in opening a dictionary in Script Editor, but Snow Leopard's AppleScript Editor kills my productivity by making me wait on it with most UI interactions with the Library window.

• Windows 7 autostarting apps as administrator

  Hello everyone. The question is easy to answer I guess. (Tried to search here, didn't find an answer.) So. The deal: There is a bug in OpenOffice (haha ..just one? :)), which prevents the spellcheck. You have to start it with right-click , run as administrator to make it work. Tried also setting this at the 'properties', but it didn't work. But 'quickstart.exe' would be also enough to make this work. (OpenOffice's quickstarter). So I'd like to run it at boot, as an admin, like I'd do with right-click. How to do THAT? (Actually there is a different bug for spellcheck on Win7. One have to run oowriter.exe as an admin, and then install the extension BY HAND from Program Files...\share...*.oxt. And THEN it'll work IF you run the app as an admin. (I'll buy SoftMaker's office as soon as the hu spellcheck arrives, but until then I have to make this work. Thanks for the answers in advance.))

• How to install service packs onto Thin Apps and other questions

  I have a VM that I use to do all my ThinApps, Once I have done my application and its built I copy just the bin folder to a server which has a share, I then create a shortcut to the program exe on users desktops. This all seems to work ok. Firstly is this correct? If so, how then do I apply a service pack to that application after the ThinApp VM has been reverted to a base image, I have corel draw which i have a service pack for but it wont intall it as its saying it cant find the package installed on the computer. I have Thinreg batch file so have included corel into that and the program appears in the program list. I have the sandbox redirected to the server share mentioned earlier into seperate user folders when the user logs in. Obvisouly once i have done a App I revert to a previous snapshop so my thinapp vm is back to base image, so the corel install is lost. Sorry if im missing something very simple. Is its a case if you have an exe/msp you have to reinstall the whole app again and start over, Thanks for any help.
